A good fantasy, with a lot of family bonds, political intrigue, and a sweet romance. It was a good story, and I did like some aspects of it a lot, but unfortunately some things just didn’t quite work for me. I wished there had been more romance, more of their dynamic worked out, and that the two main characters had more development separately as well. I feel like I got to know Maddie’s siblings more than her love interest.
I am not a fan of magic, and so that was also an element that took me a bit out of the story, but that’s just me.
All in all it was a good read and if you like fantasy, I think you’d probably enjoy it.

This gripping fantasy tale, set in a world where magic has been dormant for generations but is now "waking up", is an absolutely charming read with an endearing strong, yet feminine, FMC. I loved the world-building and the utterly unpredictable plot that kept me guessing all the way to the end. When the true villain was revealed I was equally shocked and unsurprised, which shows how well the author foreshadowed that reveal.
Towards the end of the story, I began to care so much about Luc. He really got the worst deal, but by some miracle, Salisbury manages to twist things round that the ending became perfect and I was so satisfied.
The message about free will and making our own choices is a powerful one and something we need regular reminders for. This wonderful read makes a good example of how important it can be to take responsibility for our choices and for always being aware enough to not take those choices away from others.

I loved reading this. The plot moved at a good pace and the romance was nice. I loved the sister bonds as well. I hope the next books are about her sisters. This was clean and had no swearing. I should also add that he is not a wolf shifter or anything like that, it’s just the name of his people/kingdom.

In The Wolf King, Princess Madeline Dalbot takes over the rule of Tyrrath after her father is struck down by a mysterious sleeping illness. Maddie's kingdom is attacked but she sets a trap which results in the capture of the invading King, the feared Wolf King. To avoid war, she agrees to marry him, granting his army access to her lands while retaining her right to rule. However, the Wolf King disregards their agreement, plundering Tyrrath and endangering its people. As her kingdom faces ruin, Madeline must find a way to reach his heart and stop the destruction.
This book was just so easy to read, and I binged it in one session! The characters and the plot kept urging me on until it was finished. I really enjoyed the who-dunnit mystery element that kicks in at the halfway mark and there were a number of possible plausible suspects, which kept me guessing until the conclusion!
The romance was surprisingly sweet and I really enjoyed the slow-burn, kisses only romance. I knew it was no-spice going in, so I say that I was surprised by the fact it was a sweet romance because Luc is initially presented as a villain but his behaviour afterwards towards Maddie suggests otherwise - this does make sense given the plot though, but initially it did take me by surprise! The interspersed POVs from his perspective really added to the romance.
This is the first book in the Tales of Tyrrath series, and I'm definitely going to be reading the sequels. The next book will focus on Maddie's sister, Joss, who sets out to discover a treatment for their father's sleeping sickness, and I assume (and hope) that the third book will focus on the youngest sister, Olivia. All three sisters have distinct and interesting personalities (and a specialist skill or two each) so the sequels are already looking good to me!
I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a no-spice, sweet romance in a fantasy world full of potential for awesome and varied stories.

This is a hard one for me to rate, I loved certain parts of the Wolf King, and was okay with others.
The beginning is great. Hooked me right away. I love a good Enemies to lovers, it’s my favorite trope. And this starts out as a really good enemies to lovers. But I was so bummed when by 35% Maddie was starting to catch some feelings for Luc. It seemed too quick for Maddie to be having feelings for someone who killed several people in her kingdom.
I loved Maddie in the beginning as princess, she seemed tough and smart, loyal to her people, but I felt like that got lost along the way. It didn’t help that some people called her ma’am instead of highness and such, that kept throwing me off.
I loved the twist in the end, it made Luc a much more lovable character.
I also loved the worldbuilding. I want to read more books in this world, and learn more about the other kingdoms, and learn more about the dragons!

The Wolf King is the first book in a series of interconnected standalones, and it's a retelling of The Three Little Pigs fable, which was one of the main reasons I was drawn to the story and couldn't wait to read it, as I had never seen this tale's retelling before.
Maddie is the eldest princess and sister of the three princesses of the Tyrrath kingdom. With her father ill, the responsibility of ruling falls on her shoulders, and she does her best to keep the kingdom safe. When the king from the neighbouring Craeick kingdom, Lucas, invades her kingdom and leaves only destruction behind him, she decides to take matters into her own hands and set a trap for him. However, Lucas, known as the Wolf King, is not easily outsmarted, and the tables quickly turn. Maddie agrees to marry him, believing an alliance with the Wolf King will help protect her kingdom. What starts as a marriage of convenience slowly evolves into something more as Maddie and Lucas get to know each other. However, betrayal and schemes are never far away, and more than her heart, family, or kingdom is at stake...
This book has everything I love in a good story - lovable characters and side characters, romance, banter, plot twists, a mystery to solve, strong family bonds, kingdoms to save and magic.
Luc and Maddie are perfect together. Despite his efforts to resist, Luc's heart melts for Maddie, and his rough edges start to crumble around her and her family,revealing what's been beneath his armour all along. Maddie, though young, takes her responsibility seriously and puts everyone before herself, even if it means marrying the enemy. As the story progresses, she becomes stronger and bolder than before. Aside from the chemistry between Luc and Maddie, one of my favourite aspects of the story is their siblings. They add wholesomeness to the story, and I can't wait to meet them in their own stories.And that plot twist? Genius! I suspected something was off, but I didn't expect that particular twist. I had suspicions about a few characters, and my hunch proved true, although the outcome was unexpected.
If you're looking for a romantasy with an evil male main character, a strong female main character, an enemies-to-lovers trope, witty banter, closed-door swoony romance, and a happy ending, this book is for you.
Oh, and if these reasons to read this book are still not enough for you, this book has a beautiful map inside!😉

I couldn't put it down. This story stole my mind and even when I wasn't reading I couldn't stop thinking about what was happening. The author surprised me at every turn and I so totally didn't see the twists coming. Add to that the fact I was invested in both character points of view from the start, it makes this epic romantasy both gripping and all-consuming.
I loved the arranged marriage by the princess' own choice twist on this story. That particular trope is a really hard one to navigate, but it's done brilliantly here with the added twist, which totally made the rest of the unfolding events along with the romantic elements really powerful. On top of that, the plot is brilliantly crafted. The red herrings were all perfectly planted so I believed each one was possible up until the moment the author revealed what the actual truth was, and I definitely did get quite a few surprises.
On the note of expectations, I see some refer to this book as romantasy, but I'd say that's an incorrect appelation since it is more a fantasy with a strong romantic plotline, rather than a romance with fantasy elements. The fantasy world is brilliantly constructed and is wonderfully presented in a slow and even measure. I look forward to finding out more in future books because it's clear the author has put a lot of thought into the worldbuilding and magic system, and that what's presented in this volume really is the tip of the ice berg.
Additionally, the little hints towards the Three Little Pigs fairytale were very clever and added so much to the story. Those moments when the connections became clear definitely felt like peeling back layers and it was fun to find them, especially since this work is a story entirely its own.

An easy, low spice historical romance with elements of magic makes this a highly enjoyable escape for an afternoon read! I dug the dynamic of our opposing kingdom royals, Maddie and Luc.
The stalemate that brings them to marriage is likably different. The reason for Luc's stony exterior turns out to be a bit of a twist about half way in. I wasn't expecting it and likes the suspense it brought!
I was just a little foggy on the way the magical element worked but I don't wanna spoil it here! Other than that, it had solid tension in the third act and I felt the connection between the couple. Luc is actually quite sweet and I loved as that side of him came out. Maddie is a thoughtful strategist and her and her sisters had a beautiful bond. And the villain (though not quite a surprise) still had some "oomph" and did pose real threats to our protagonists.
All in all, a solid recommendation for an Enemies to Lovers (low spice, just kissing) historical romance with elements of magic and suspense!

The Wolf King was a really pleasant read. The story captivated me and kept my interest from beginning to end.
I really liked all the characters, especially the siblings dynamics, whether on Madeline's side or Lucas'. There was both playfulness and protectiveness, and the family bond played a big part in the storyline.
Our main characters, Madeline and Lucas were kind of opposites, but with the same goals and hopes for their respective people. After agreeing to an arranged union with no intention of it being a real marriage, they found themselves progressively caring for each other, and developing feelings.
I wish there was more of Madeline/Lucas scenes. It felt like a lot of their time together was spent off page, so we were rather told instead of shown that their relationship was evolving. Especially since Lucas was portrayed as an almost evil character, it just felt like Madeline changed her tune almost too quickly, which seemed out of character for her.
I was surprised by the turn of events in the plot, I didn't see the twist, nor the culprit coming. Once again though, I felt like Madeline was strangely accepting of the situation, not even doubting her interpretation of what she witnessed, which didn't seem to fit what we knew of Lucas' character, or her vision of him.
The resolution felt anticlimactic as I found it to be a bit convenient, but it tied up the story while keeping some mystery, which will probably be addressed in the later books. I'm mainly curious about the recrudescence of magic and its implications.
Overall, it was a great debut, and I will be following along with this story. I am looking forward to more siblings shenanigans.

Book Review: The Wolf King by: Lauren H Salisbury
This book was a quick read I was finished with it in just a few hours. The storyline and characters were very well written. I loved the world building and plot! It was a great plot actually it kept me engaged and wanting more.
There is an overall mystery woven into the story and the book is full of potential suspects as we navigate to discover who is the villain. At first you think it’s Lucas but not all is as it seems. I really enjoyed the way the story unfolds and you really don’t know what is happening and it keeps you engaged.
The two characters are just perfect I loved that it was dual POV, normally I’m not a fan of third person but I really didn’t notice it as much in this story. I loved the slow burn of the main characters and it was romantic and sweet. There is no spice and it really honestly didn’t need it the story kept the action and suspense in the forefront. I really loved the side family characters and look forward to seeing the other sisters in their own books. This is my first book by Lauren but it definitely won’t be my last I cannot wait for more!

The Wolf King is a delightfully written romantasy based on a subtle retelling of The Three Little Pigs fairly tale. The story fizzes along at a good pace with characters that fairly bounce off the page. The relationship between the three sisters is particularly well done, and Maddie makes a good heroine, courageous and selfless, if rather naive. I don't normally do romantasy, but if I did, this would be the kind of thing I'd want - atmospheric but not raunchy, intimate but never gratuitous. Supported by good worldbuilding, the focus is on the main characters with a good range of perspectives that challenge old stereotypes and make it difficult to choose sides. There were some good twists along the way and a very satisfying ending. The world feels rather small in scale, with the different kingdoms fairly tripping over each other, and the magic element feels a little undercooked in this book, but I hope there's room for further exploration and development of that later in the series. Twisty fairytale-like fantasy
An enjoyable read with hints of dragons, magic reawakening, curses, and an unlikely love story.
Maddie is an eternal optimist with a rational mind, a princess who knows her duty but can't ignore her heart...or intuition. Luc is a brutal warrior king whose rule began through tragedy at a young age, and his reputation preceeds him. But that doesn't stop Maddie from agreeing to an insane deal to save her people from any more bloodshed.
Just when you think you know what's happening, surprise! All is not what it seems, and love might be all that can save them both.
Because Luc & Maddie end up married, there are a couple scenes in bed together with some fairly innocent intimacy, but everything is no/low spice. For that reason, I recommend The Wolf King to adult readers and some older teens. It's a clever, multi-layered story with interesting magic, sweet sibling relationships, and a couple fun twists.

As a newcomer to fantasy, I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Wolf King, but this slow-burn tale of enemies, magic, and redemption won me over and by the middle of the book I was hooked and earlier details clicked into place like puzzle pieces. The story centers on a forced marriage between two warring kingdoms—a trope that crackles with tension as the protagonists navigate betrayal, curses, and magic.
What stood out most were the family dynamics—relationships are heartfelt, and drive the characters’ motivations. The MMC is Swoon worthy: morally complex, fiercely protective, even when his actions are questionable. His evolution from “enemy” to someone worth rooting, back to enemy, then back to swooning over is done brilliantly.

Who knew I could love a Three Little Pigs retelling? This is definitely a new must-read start to a series that I know I won't be able to get enough of. I finished this in one night; it's a super quick, page-turning read that keeps you captivated and yearning to see what's next throughout. I was not ready for the twist and when I thought I knew I absolutely could not get enough of the reveal. This is a beautifully done slow burn that's no spice (and doesn't need it) but maximizes on tension, mystery, and wit. Maddie, the FMC was strong, caring, communicative, smart as hell, and overall a fantastic lead. I loved Luc as her rival and royal opposite. Everything about this is phenomenal and I can't wait to read more by Lauren!

The Wolf King
I believe I was initially drawn to this book because of the title. Then, having read the synopsis, I was even more drawn to it. I am happy to report it did not disappoint. The Wolf King was such a nice, quick, clean read with enough angst to keep you rooting for the MCs and enough suspense to keep guessing at who or why. The plot twist was so unexpected, completely throwing cold water on my prediction, but I'm not mad about it!
That being said, if you like fairytale retelling, a FMC who is not afraid to sacrifice all for the sake of her family and kingdom, a MMC who promises to kill anyone who so much as touches “his wife”. Sisterly and brotherly bonds, then The Wolf Kong is the book for you. Kudos to author Lauren H Salisbury for a book well done.

This cover is gorgeous! The book was amazingly written. I love a good enemies to lovers. The plot of this book was so good. I was very intrigued by the book from the beginning. I love how the book had some banter within it. I really did enjoy Madeline’s character. It was so neat that this was inspired by the three little pigs. I love when a book is inspired or based off of another fairytale. I loved seeing the world building Lauren did within The Wolf King. The Wolf King was the first book I’ve read by Lauren H. Salisbury and found it to be so entertaining, I went in blind, not knowing what to expect as it’s sold as a Three Little Pigs retelling/inspired story and I couldn’t figure out in my head how this would go, I am very glad to say I loved it, the story and characters were fantastic.
I loved the character of Maddie most, her determination, but what I loved most was her communication skills, something you don’t read much in books, a lot of authors go with miscommunication or have a feisty heroine who is stubborn and won’t listen (not that she isn’t feisty) I just really loved seeing a character who thinks things through and in changing her mind, communicated it to others !
I can’t really say much else without many spoilers, but I can’t say if you want some fantasy romance in your life with mystery, suspense and some steam this is the book for you.

This book was so easy to read and very hard to put down!! The mystery aspect of who was behind the curse was hook line and sinker cause I had the need to keep going until I knew for sure who it was....and I can say I didn't expect the culprit! If you love a clean slow burn romance then this one's for you!! This book is the first in the series but it is easily a stand alone if that's what you like too!
Maddie and Luc have a very hot and cold relationship but with what they battle who would be able to connect on a romantic or political matter in their position. I love that Maddie is always family first especially when it comes to her sisters! Luc is the same and I love his love for Flynn and even his mother! Even though they are so different their values and wants line up pretty darn close!!

This was a three little pigs retelling with Princesses and Kings. When Maddie’s father doesn’t wake up one night she is forced to rule in his place. When the king of the neighboring country starts attacking her borders she takes action and agrees to marry him. King Luc known as the wolf king is not what he seems. When Maddie realizes there is more going on then meets the eye she makes the play to save her kingdom. I really like Maddie and how smart she was to figure out what was going on. She was great with her sisters and loved the Three Little Pig twist. I can’t wait to see what happens with the next book!! i read this book in one night and couldn’t put it down.

This is such an interesting premise but I wanted more depth to the story. I feel like there was too many threads to the story it made the story overall feel too simple. Give us a prologue on how Luc got his scar and how dangerous the North can be. Less montage of their relationship and give us those conversations and banter. He gives her a knife but knows she can’t use it. Hello weapons training? Give the princess a group of bodyguards that we get to know so it gives more impact and realistic aspect to the story. I usually say books could be shorter, but I think this one could have been longer to flesh out more of the story.

Love, love, love this book! It's a fantasy retelling of The Three Little Pigs (bet you haven't seen that one often!) with three sisters, three homes, and one big bad wolf king! It's enemies to lovers and I'm not usually a huge fan of morally grey but this is done perfectly with dual POV. If you like your romance sweet and swoony but also like danger, mystery, and high stakes definitely give this one a try! I loved Maddie's relationship with her sisters and can't wait for them to get their own stories. I've read over a hundred books so far this year and this one is definitely in the top five!

I saw this book recommended by someone on a facebook group I’m in.
It was a fun and easy read for me and contains all the tropes that I love in fantasy romance. All of the characters were lovable.
However, I felt like the history of dragons and mages, as well as the backstory of why Luc was called the Wolf King were not explored extensively. That kind of depth is what I’m also looking for in fantasy.

The Wolf King is a loose retelling of one of my favorite childhood fables, The Three Little Pigs. This book was a quick read and I loved the world building, the romance and the banter! There is also a strong sisterly bond that I love so much! Maddie and Lucas are both very strong willed and I absolutely loved Maddie from the start and how she doesn't back down for anything.

This is wasn't it for me. I would not count this book as romance. The couple probably interacted a total of 10 times and were suddenly in love after a few scenes playing a boardgame. I read this book because someone said it was a romance with sultry tension-- Where, Jennifer? Not in this book. Gives very YA vibes.

This book is an enemies to lovers book. You follow Maddie around as she protects her kingdom and goes as far as strategically capturing the Wolf King and making a deal with him. Little did she know that it would be her undoing. There is tension in the love story but is spice free. There are multiple twists that keep you on your toes

An excellent and true enemies to lovers. I absolutely loved Maddie and each of her sisters for different reasons. Maddie is such a great FMC that's strong and willing to do anything for her family and kingdom, but she's also relatable in navigating her losses and uncertainties throughout the book. The world building is easy to follow and sets up plenty of intrigue for the future to come for the 3 sisters. I also can't forget Luc, our swoony, broody, and very protective Wolf King. I'll take all the banter I can get between Luc and Maddie but I'm also excited to see what awaits in Jocelyn and Olivia's stories.

This novel is everything a fantasy story should be! It was well thought out, had great character development, plenty of action, and a nice twist to keep you turning the page.

Enjoyable
My first book from this author and I really loved it. It’s all wrapped up in one, had a wonderfully unique plot though felt the romance could have been a little more fleshed out. But loved what it was.
