The Ottawa Otters #1

O Goalie Night

Rate this book
'Tis the season to be tempted.

All Beth Michaels wants for Christmas is a fresh start. A new job in a new city is her chance to finally break free from her overbearing yet well-meaning mother, not to mention her small-town notoriety as NHL superstar Ben Michaels' little sister. But her dream of independence hits an unexpected snag when a housing mishap leaves her with no choice but to move in with Ben's best friend and teammate, the broody (and gorgeous) Foster James.

As a top goalie, Foster has always been great at handling high-pressure decisions and sticking to the rules. But there is one rule he finds impossible to follow: don't fall for your best friend's sister. After years of being alone, resisting the sweet and funny Beth may be the toughest challenge he has ever faced.

The goal was to keep their relationship under wraps, but plans have a way of becoming tangled during the holidays.

O Goalie Night is a holiday hockey romcom. It's the first novel in the Ottawa Otters standalone series.

4.5⭐️ (rounded up for GR!). O Goalie Night is enjoyable of a read as it’s witty and fun title implies. I read this SO FAST and enjoyed every minute of Foster and Beth’s story-it left me wishing there was more of it! I loved that both main characters were well fleshed out and while they had complex motivations, they were both non-toxic and the story still had tension despite two pretty emotionally healthy protagonists (it’s refreshing to see this trending in sports romance!). The story blends spice and plot well for just enough of each without being overbearing on any front. I can’t wait to see where the Ottawa Otters series goes next-especially considering that epilogue twist!

I’m playing around with the format of my reviews for 2025 and we’ll see how this goes!

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow drama, blip of not really om drama with a coworker of h’s being interested - no interest from h. Both are experienced - 8 months celibate H and small mentions of history.

Some tropes:
☆ Brother’s best friend
☆ Temporary roommates
☆ Hiding relationship
☆ Slow burn
☆ Hockey
☆ FMC learning to be heard with family
☆ Family reconciliation
☆ Personal growth for side character (eventually)
☆ Positive friendships for both characters

Foster (H) is a hockey goalie who’s asked to pick up his best friend’s younger sister from the airport last minute. Foster’s a big, reserved, but sweet hunk of man. Beth (h) is finally moving away from home and stretching her wings with a teaching job near her brother. She’s talkative and sweet and definitely admiring of Foster, esp after he ends up helping her out with a crazy situation that develops with her planned rental. A temporary roommate situation is agreed upon when Foster steps up when her own brother is a selfish jerk (this is a continuing theme, fair warning, you’re going to want to punch him). Obviously, chemistry and sparks start snapping, some adorable connection moments create some longing and tension, and a lovely romance builds between Foster and Beth. Also obviously, they choose to keep it on the down low to start, like many other brother’s best friend books. Slow burn goodness, fluffiness with some sports, and steamy to start my 2025 reading.

I loved both Beth and Foster. They’re just good characters to cheer for. I loved their texting and Foster teaching her to ice skate. All the gestures that he made for her, big and small, and the care that he showed even before they were officially together. Beth does think he’s out of her league, not because of negative self-image but rather because he’s who he is and he’s so emphatic about how he sees her. Foster’s definitely making the favorite heroes list. The romance is adorable and the steaminess is well written. There’s even an “I can’t wait to get home” moment with a semi-public scene in a backseat.

For side characters, Beth’s brother is a jackass, who does finally learn his lesson by the end. The rest of Beth’s family isn’t shown on page, just through calls and mentions of conversations. I really was rooting for Beth to flex her voice with her brother and her parents (and she does by the end!). The banter and brotherhood Foster had with his core group of teammates was excellent. Beth having a fun teacher friend and a supportive hockey wife friend was awesome too. Foster thinks about his lack of family several times and without spoiling, this is slowly revealed and does have a resolution that I also loved. I loved a lot about this book and smiled a good bit.

Writing-wise, I did feel that the pacing was a little off at times maybe. It didn’t necessarily drag, I think it could have maybe been just a smidge shorter though or maybe a few details left out to keep things feeling like they were moving along better. There’s not really angst between Beth and Foster and no third act breakup, the angst comes from when the shoe will/does drop about their relationship.

The ending is HFN and cute. The epilogue is several months later from the brother’s POV and a lead-in to what will be his book, which will be second chance. As much of an ass as he was for the majority of the book, the growth that he had when confronted and that he mentally reviews in the epilogue did make me warm to him. Second chances are hard for me though so I don’t know. I would definitely be down for one of Foster’s other teammate’s books though cause he was a ball of sunshine and warmth and I adored him.

3.5 ⭐

Can’t tell if it’s just because the last several hockey books I’ve read were modern day tragedies, but this one kinda ate. However I don’t give a rats ass about Ben so I’m sad he’s the next book

Brother’s best friend, roommates, a teacher FMC, hockey & CHRISTMAS?!
This book was made for me 😍
Obsessed with these tropes & they were executed perfectly 👌🏼

📖 O Goalie Night by KM Gillis
⭐️: 5/5
🌶️: open door, several scenes

💭 overall thoughts:
I adored Beth & Foster! 🥹 such a beautiful couple, their dynamic was just so sweet.

Beth’s inner monologue often had me laughing out loud, I found her super relatable.

Find man who asks you to text after driving in a winter storm 🥰 I loved how much Foster looked out for Beth, and how he didn’t see his feelings coming.

“It wasn’t the first time a man told me I was beautiful, but it was the first time one made me believe it.”

Living about 2 hours from Ottawa, I loved that this was set to close to home. Having the team being named after my fav animal (Ottawa otters 🦦) was the icing on the cake!

read if you love:
💙 brother’s teammate & best friend
🏒 NHL goalie
👩🏻‍🏫 teacher fmc
🏠 (temporary) roommates/forced proximity
🤫 secret relationship/forbidden
🙅🏻‍♀️ no 3rd act breakup
🇨🇦 Canadian author + setting
💞 dual 1st person pov

Thank you to author KM Gillis for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

✼2025 Update✼

Foster James has been at the top of my book boyfriend list since we met last December, and I was excited to revisit him this year. But after listening to the audiobook this time, I'm surprised to say I wouldn’t recommend the audio. The narrators didn’t capture the characters the way they feel in my head and heart—especially Foster. Beth also came across much flatter than she does on the page, and she was one of my favorite FMCs last year!

Anyway, despite that, I still love both Foster and Beth, but the next time I reunite with them, I’ll be eyeball reading again.

✼Original Review✼

I didn’t plan on reading this book, it wasn’t even on my radar, but my friends convinced me to and I’m so glad I did! I loved it so much. This book gave me all the feels - I had the biggest smile on my face and even teared up a few times which almost never happens. It’s swoon worthy and just made my heart so happy. Foster is a top tier book boyfriend and Beth is one of my favorite female characters in contemporary romance. I never wanted it to end!

Looking forward it Ben’s books next. I hope this author does a book for Will and Austin too 🤞🏻

I loved this book so much. It was well written and funny. It was the perfect Christmas rom com. I am from PEI so also loved how the main character was from there too. It was a simple, easy read that I could not put down. The characters were so lovable and a perfect feel good read.

I cannot wait for the next book!! 😍

4.5⭐

❤️ Romance

[3.5 ⭐️] : “Beth, this wasn’t a home until you got here and it won’t be one if you leave.”

Leeré el libro de Ben? Quizás!!

This was a cute surprise! Bonus points for being set in Canada! If you're looking for something lighthearted, slightly festive, and relatively low on drama, this brother’s-best-friend romance was great. Really, the main conflict is Beth and Foster hiding their relationship. Catch me in a different mood, and I might have complained about the lack of angst. But not today. I adored this!

Beth never expected to get close to the Ottawa Otters' goalie, but when she becomes the victim of a rental scam, Foster steps in and offers her a temporary place to stay. These two were precious together! I loved seeing Foster fall for Beth, coming in hard with cute texts and affection. It was also incredibly refreshing to see them discuss conflicts together. A+ communication!

As for the hockey aspect, the Ottawa Otters' teammates and their locker room banter was a really fun time! You get just enough of a taste of each of their personalities. I'm already claiming Austin as my favourite. I’m very much looking forward to more in this new series!

NO COMPLAINTS.

I was dragged in by this cover and title. I COULD NOT RESIST. And the book was a great read too. Just the right book for the right moment. This is a low angst and tension, a little bit of insta-connection and allllll of the Christmas moments you could want. I loved the skating and tree decorating and many moments in between. Foster James is a walking green flag and I love that for Beth.

There’s not a lot to the plot (which is fine!!). It hit all the best notes for me in what I enjoy in a Christmas romance. I like it to feel simple but engaging and please bring all the swoon. I appreciated that the spice didn’t overwhelm the plot (though some of the innuendo did feel a little out of pocket). It’s fast paced and there’s plenty of hockey content to be able to say this is a sports romance too. I enjoyed the whole cast and look forward to continuing this series.

Overall audience notes:
- Christmas Hockey Romance
- Language: mild
- Romance: 3 open door
- Violence: low

"O Goalie Night" is an absolutely adorable holiday hockey romance that hits all the right notes! Beth Michaels is sweet, relatable, and hilariously funny, with an inner monologue that will have you laughing out loud. Her journey to independence is heartfelt, and her unexpected connection with Foster James, her brother’s broody (and swoon-worthy) best friend, makes for a romance that’s as endearing as it is irresistible.

Foster’s growth throughout the story is so well done—his vulnerability and the way he navigates his feelings for Beth are both believable and heartwarming. Throw in festive cheer, tangled family dynamics, and some secretly stolen moments, and this story becomes the ultimate feel-good holiday romcom. Whether you’re a hockey fan or just love a good brother’s-best-friend romance, this one’s a winner!

This was absolutely one of the best hockey romances I’ve read to date.
The love story itself was so endearing and had me kicking my feet. The family dynamics were beautiful. I love Foster James and the way he showed so much growth throughout the story was believable & beautiful.
I’m so SO excited for Bens story (and very hopeful to see an Austin story in the future 🤭)
Thank you, thank you to K.M Gillis for the ARC of this beautiful book!♥️

THAT’S ALL pour le volet Noël. 🙄🙄🙄 L’histoire était cute. Ça se lisait bien. Mais ça me turn off raide moi une relation cachée pour pas que le

I really loved this new to me Canadian indie author's new hockey holiday romance. It was dual POV, forbidden love, brother's best friend, roommate romance perfection. Set in Ottawa it also has lots of steam, complicated family dynamics and is perfect for fans of authors like Tessa Bailey. Highly recommended and I can't wait to read Ben's story next!!!

3💫 The book title is absolute chef’s kiss! This one was so cutie. A classic ~quiet shy goalie~ (WHY ARE GOALIES ALWAYS THE SHY ONES IN SMUT BOOKS?!) falls for his best friend’s younger sister book. Set around the holidays and wraps up like a dang bow! Can’t wait for the next in this silly lil series!

Your honour, I love them.

The roommates to friends to lovers was perfection. Their flirty teasing was adorable. The Christmassy elements were there, but not the cheesy, overdone stuff. There was no miscommunication or denial of feelings. Just Foster and Beth being adorable and falling in love.
