Epic battles ensue in this awesome fifth volume! Izumi (on the cover) is a top favorite side character for me. I don't know that I trust Fuhrer President King Bradley guys, we got a big reveal on him in this volume and it's fishy, I am eager for more. Tally ho to volume 6!

The previous volume had a lot of intriguing backstory and character development. But volume 5 is full of action scenes—lots of fights between characters who, at a glance, look a lot alike. It’s not my favorite kind of story, so this book was a bit tedious for me. I’m hopeful that the next book will move the story forward in more interesting ways.

This sucks. Why do dogs have to be so loyal?

Gosh, this was always one of the strangest parts of the series for me. I think, throughout every rewatch and every reread I've ever done of this series, I'm always surprised by how much I love Greed and his gang. They're not exactly on the right side, but they go against the major villains of the story. Not to mention, they're extremely intriguing and surprisingly likable characters. Just barely introduced before they leave, and I already have so many feelings about them.

Greed and The Gang

I think a lot of my love for these characters comes with my adoration of Dolcetto. I don't think I'd be nearly as attached to Greed's gang without him. That said, there's something to note with how much they care for each other. Even Greed, selfish bastard that he is, has some clear emotions for his people. And it's honestly so wonderful.

Against all odds, what with him ordering Al's kidnapping and pissing off both Izumi and Ed, Greed is shockingly likable. It's funny, because when you think about the series as a whole and which homunculus we care about most...the majority of Fullmetal Alchemist fans will cite Greed first. And sure, there are some of us who like Lust or Envy...or even Gluttony. But I think, universally, Greed is the one we actually find ourselves loving. And why?

Well, there's just something about his sincerity. Even in his selfishness, we can relate to him in a strange way. Add in the fact that he had so many people shamelessly loyal to him? Like, damn. Later on there will be an added factor, but for now even this small glimpse allows us to feel truly connected to this character.

Finality

So, we learn a few other things in this installment of Fullmetal Alchemist. Namely, there's a secret surrounding Fuhrer King Bradley that is revealed toward the end. Alphonse is looking for a way to get his memories of the "truth" back to help them further their quest along, and that's about it. It definitely made for a very involved section of the story, sans the usual goofery that makes you laugh while reading and watching this story.

It's a more serious moment with some deeply devastating events. And all I can say now is that I'm eager to read the next one.

With this Volume 5, we are deep in the story with Al and Ed still seeking the means to return their bodies to them. They've teamed up with Izumi, their former teacher, and she is one tough character. Although there wasn't much development on Al and Ed's quest, events have caused the President to do some questionable decisions that have the boys wondering just what's going on in the capitol.

Story: Al and Ed learn more about Izumi and then are summarily thrown out of her school due to their desire to study transmutation further. But neither give up and soon they find themselves a part of Izumi's family. As E heads off to do his re-certification test, Al finds he is the object of interest to some strange people. When Al ends up being kidnapped, Ed will find some interesting allies to help free his brother.

In this issue, we get a bit of a turning point in the story as Al and Ed both realize that the 'something rotten' in the capitol may have to do with the President himself. So we set the stage for the brother to return to the capitol, along with a relocated Mustang and crew, to discover more about the experimentation on humans with alchemy.

The presentation here is clean, translations excellent, and there are even some color pages in the middle. In all, a great read for the excellent story. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

God this is probably my favorite volume. It brings back such good memories of reading it for the first time. Izumi giving Ed and Al a hug and them saying they were sorry, destroys my soul. Al is so precious when he’s interacting with the Greed gang. And Greed being like “oh shit, I’m sorry about your brother” So good. Alex and Sig meeting and THE FRIENDSHIP FORGED FROM MUSCLE. Literal perfection. Alex’s interactions with Bradley and THE REVEAL! So good.

Also I found something interesting. I’m pretty sure Bradley stabbed Dolcetto in a similar place that Bradley gets stabbed in towards the end of the series. Which is fitting because they both don’t die from it.

Also my favorite part of the book:

“Grumman: But what would really please this old man is you taking my granddaughter as your future first lady.
Roy: You’re jumping the gun.”—Page 26

Another great volume with some new characters thrown in the mix.

My, my, the homunculi get more diverse by the minute. I must say that's a welcome change for as their initial mystery started to fade their goals and behaviors became too stereotypical for my liking. But here we have a rogue homunculus with his own agenda, which means they actually can possess some agency and will of their own. Greed is a sweetie, he and his gang of misfits, and I didn't expect that.

The story really gets better too, kicking in the higher gear and revealing more about the stakes that the various factions have in the long game. And a good thing that I had next few volumes lined up already - this stuff is addictive!

I think this might be my favorite volume so far.

There was a lot of development in some of the over all plot and I felt like some of the characters that have been sitting in the wings finally came onstage.

I really liked some of the development in the plot though Al and Ed didn't grow too much in this volume. I also think Teacher is my favorite character.

After the hefty SPQR, it was nice to hop into something quick and fun - blitzed through this in a couple of hours.

Greed is a lot more interesting in the manga than the anime, and has a fair bit more BDE. There I said it.

Another great volume. More action packed than last volume’s more story development heavy content. But it’s enjoyable to get to see how badass some of these characters are in action.
