For Love of Country: Leave the Democrat Party Behind

Rate this book
Tulsi Gabbard was the rising star of the Democratic Party. But the growing wokeness, racism, and intolerance were more than she could stomach, and she left. This is her story.

Today's Democratic Party is controlled by an elitist cabal of warmongers driven crazy by woke ideology and anti-white animus. They are a clear and present threat to the God-given freedoms enshrined in the Constitution.

A soldier, former member of Congress, and a presidential candidate, Tulsi loves her "I answered the call of duty and took an oath, dedicating my life to supporting and defending those freedoms, both in uniform and in public office. I became a Democrat when I ran for office because I saw them as a party that stood up for the little guy and against the interests of big business and warmongers. I remained a Democrat for twenty years, albeit with an independent streak."

Today that party is antagonistic to people of faith, hostile to the police and law and order, suspicious of law-abiding Americans, unserious about border security, and uncritical of a national security apparatus that targets political opponents and that is dragging us ever closer to apocalyptic nuclear war.

Now an Independent, Tulsi calls on those who love America to protect our rights from those who are seeking to undermine them at every turn. It’s time to say good-bye to the Democratic Party.

After reading this book, I have changed my mind about about Tulsi Gabbard. I originally though she would be a good candidate for US Vice President. Now I think I will write in her name for President. She by far outshines, outthinks and over shadows the two current leading candidates, who are unacceptable to me due to their personal, moral, ethical and human weaknesses.
I had followed the author a bit in social media and in video appearances and liked her, but after reading her book, my esteem for her has risen greatly. From the book, I learned some things I did not know, even though I follow politics and government very closely.
More importantly I found the the author is quite authentic and very unlike most politicians, she thinks for herself and does not fear to deviate from the majority, or criticize and finally leave her political party. I also left that same party many years ago for many of the same reasons.
I was first attracted to her very early successful start in politics, her military careeer and her service in the Congress, but became even more impressed by her independent attitude and sound analysis of the present saddening situation of our country that has almost completely lost its bearing in a world surrounded by evil forces, crises and temptations. Finally I like very much her emphasis upon the Creator, the family and love as the real things that matter.
Tulsi Gabbard seems to be blessed and guided on a Heaven-sent mission to be of great service to our beloved, besmirched, beleaguered, and besieged country.

"Regardless of your political affiliation or leanings, or which candidate you like or dislike, we should all be alarmed when those who are driven by their insatiable hunger for power are actively undermining our democracy without care for the short- and long-term consequences of their actions..."

For Love of Country was an excellent look into the current state of the modern-day American Democratic Party. Hopelessly drowning in a quagmire of woke racial politicking and pathological groupthink, they have completely abandoned the core ethos of the country that they run, the author says.

Author Tulsi Gabbard is an American politician, United States Army Reserve officer, and political commentator who was the U.S. representative for Hawaii's 2nd congressional district from 2013 to 2021. Gabbard was the first Samoan-American to become a voting member of Congress.

Tulsi writes with an excellent style here, which I found to be clear, lively, and engaging. She's got a natural talent as an orator, and it carried over into the writing here.
She also reads the audiobook version I have, and did an excellent job of the narration.

The quote from the start of this review continues:
"...They are doing all they possibly can to keep the American people from being able to choose who we want to vote for as president. They have no respect for us and our fundamental rights as citizens in a democratic republic. They are so afraid that we, the people, might make “the wrong choice” that in the name of protecting our democracy and saving us from ourselves, they are destroying our democracy and taking away our freedom to decide who our next president should be.
To make matters worse, those leading this fight really believe they’re doing the right thing. They say, with great concern in their voice, that if the American people elect Donald Trump again, he will destroy our democracy and be the dictator-in-chief. This is why they feel they are justified in trying to take away our right to vote for any candidate we choose … in other words, they say they need to destroy our democracy in order to “save” it.
This is lunacy. It’s the mindset and mentality of dictators..."

She lays out the scope of the issue:
"What’s at stake here is far greater than Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
Our democracy is being destroyed by the permanent Washington elite in both political parties who truly believe they—and not the American people —have the right and duty to determine who we want to serve and lead our country. They readily dismiss the U.S. Constitution, the rule of law, and the voices of the American people, anointing themselves as the ones who have the power and justification to decide who will become president.
...Our democracy is under attack. It’s up to us to save it. We must hold those responsible accountable at the ballot box and send a strong message to leaders in both parties: those who abuse their power and undermine our democracy will not be tolerated.
If we do nothing, however, and turn a blind eye to those weaponizing our criminal justice system against their political opponents and telling us who we are and are not allowed to vote for, it will set a precedent for every election and presidency in the future and our democracy will be finished.
This is not the America my brothers and sisters in uniform and I risk our lives to defend."

In this short bit of writing, she explains why she left the Democratic Party:
"The party I joined over twenty years ago no longer exists today.
I could no longer remain in today’s Democrat Party, which is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers fueled by cowardly wokeness who divide us by racializing every issue and stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, are hostile to people of faith and spirituality, demonize the police and protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, allow our borders to remain open while claiming they are “secure,” weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and, above all, drag us closer to nuclear war with each passing day."

I used to wonder why Tulsi Gabbard didn't get the Democratic Presidential nomination. She ticks all the boxes: She's a woman, a woman "of colour," and a war vet. Unfortunately, she's also everything they dislike in a candidate: She's too independent, intelligent, and principled to tow the crooked party line. Instead of giving Tulsi the nomination, or making her a running mate, they chose Joe Biden, a man who can barely string a full sentence together, and cackling Kamala Harris as his running mate.

The creation of America as a nation-state founded upon the core values of freedom and liberty is a unique idea in world history. The values of freedom, liberty, and independence are sadly not the default state of human organization. Rather, as history has shown countless times; authoritarianism and restriction tend to be the default state of societal organization.

The First and Second Amendments were put in place to help prevent Governmental tyranny. The First Amendment is a bulwark against mankind's proclivity towards pathological groupthink. The Second Amendment is in case the First Amendment no longer works:
"Our Founders intentionally passed the Second Amendment right after the First. They knew how fragile this new, free democracy was, and how susceptible it would be to those who sought to abuse their power and take away our freedom. We must defend our right to bear arms, not only for recreational purposes, but to defend ourselves and our loved ones, and to serve as a check on the abuse of power by an increasingly tyrannical government."

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last ~10 years, it's hard to ignore how polarizing politics in the West are becoming. Partisan tensions have been steadily rising on both sides. If we don't find a way to soothe these flames, civil war will be an inevitability, and the entire house could burn to the ground...

The erosion of constitutionally protected rights and the core ethos that the country was founded upon should be alarming to you, regardless of your political leanings. Unfortunately in politics, this is rarely the case. Very few people are objectively principled, and only care if their side is winning. This is the tragedy of the deeply partisan human animal.

For anyone who's read about history, it is repeating, almost exactly 100 years later, IMHO. In Europe, Russia was the first nation-state to fall to a Socialist revolution in 1918. Organic far-leftist sentiment spread through much of Europe like wildfire. These tensions reached a boiling point in Spain first, resulting in the Spanish Civil War, circa ~1936-1939. The rise of Fascism also occurred in the post-WW1 period after the Russian Revolution, and saw the rise of right-wing strongmen Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini; both of whom came to power partly in opposition to this far-leftist sentiment. The reader should look into the state of Germany's Weimar Republic post-WW1 for more context. What resulted was the Second World War, and over a hundred million dead...

In this quote, she talks about the Washington Uniparty's support for endless wars:
"For too long, United States foreign policy has consisted of enacting crippling sanctions and waging regime-change wars, all under the banner of “defending freedom and democracy” around the world, and usually in the guise of humanitarianism. That was true under Democrat Bill Clinton,
Republican George W. Bush, and Democrat Barack Obama. And true to form, President Biden has made waging a “global battle for democracy” against the rise of autocracies in the world the central pillar of his foreign policy agenda.30
The truth is, this worldview is based on the propagation of lies that set up a paradigm of good versus evil in the world, all so the war uniparty can have a mechanism—or an excuse—to feed their insatiable desire for more power and more money..."

Some more of what Gabbard talks about in these pages includes:
• The Democratic Party attacking foundations of American freedom; free speech, gun rights,
• The Biden-Harris administration working with the FBI and other agencies of the federal government to pressure Big Tech companies, directly and indirectly, to censor and suspend the accounts of specific individuals.
• Political bias by Google; sending conservative political emails to spam folders
• Hunter Biden's laptop fiasco; its authenticity, and the squashing of the story during the 2020 election.
• The Elitist Cabal of Warmongers; Their aim of regime change in Russia
• Fomenting Racism; the cult of D.E.I.
• What’s True? The Powerful Decide
• Families Under Fire; Neo-Marxist Critical Race Theory and sexualized books as part of school curriculum

******************

For Love of Country was a sobering look into the state of the modern-day Democratic Party. Anyone who has not closely been following the ongoing culture war needs to put this one on their to-read list.
Tulsi Gabbard did a great job with this book. Hopefully, if more sensible people speak out as Tulsi is here, we can walk back from the approaching abyss.
I'm not sure where all this will end, but if history is any indicator, it will be a bumpy ride...
5 stars, and a spot on my "favorites" shelf.

This was one of my least favorite books. The inflammatory rhetoric, name-calling, shaming, misplaced blame, and false statements projected as facts is disquieting and it’s disheartening to know many reading the book might not fact check. (Though it’s bestselling status is specious to me considering with the similarly conservative, “Love, Mom,” is the only other current one with, “retailers report receiving bulk orders.”) For example, “Gender Queer,” isn’t and has never been for elementary school students.
In the author’s defense, upon looking now she has the words cabal and apocalyptic in the book description. I’m probably in the minority in that I simply read almost all the bestselling books regardless of politics. Others may be interested in due to the alignment with their views.
To me the one redeeming quality of this book may be that it’s good to know what some people think regardless of truth or fiction.

I did not want to read this book, but my mother begged me to, and I agreed. I am honestly ashamed to even post it on GoodReads, but I want my annual reading challenge to be accurate and I can’t figure out how to make it private.

Ms. Gabbard’s disturbing and vitriolic commentary on the Democratic Party is hyperbolic, ignorant, and downright inaccurate. She misrepresents the party’s view with faulty logic and her sources (when provided) often lack credibility.

Not for me, but maybe you’ll enjoy it if you’re a conservative hoping for some confirmation bias.

Tulsi tells the truth

I highly recommend this book for any independent thinking American, that’s seeking a perspective that’s outside of the elites in DC. Her first hand account of the nature of our political system is spot on.

This book covers Tulsi Gabbard’s views on events in the last few years – focussing on her disillusionment with the Democratic party. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Tulsi and she was forceful and convincing.

Tulsi enlisted in the National Guard after 09/11; was deployed to Iraq and was there for about 12 months. She joined the Democratic party in 2002, and credits this to being inspired by past leaders who embraced freedom. Her view is that the party has been taken over by selfish leaders, poor in negotiation who indulge in war mongering and have moved to the extreme left – promoting woke ideas. An example of how freedom is only paid lip service to is the extent to which the party would go to stop Trump winning the election. The book covers many public themes including – freedom, partisanship, wokeism, misalignment with peoples’ aspirations and others.

This being largely a political views book will expectedly invite diverse opinions. I found her to be extremely articulate & intelligent in her views. I have my concerns with wokeism as well which I think is encouraging extremism and exacerbating divisions. An example in the book is that of a young girl who comes to believe that she is a boy trapped in a girl’s body because she likes video games (based on posts on social media) and goes in for gender affirmation surgery; but later regretted her decision. Tulsi is scathing in her criticism of the Democratic party in recent years, possibly also bitter at how she was treated and sought to be defamed (suggesting she was colluding with Russia).

I would have liked more personal experiences as part of the book. I suppose though that she had decided to write this as a book of her political views.

I don't hand out five stars often. I wish Goodreads had a more precise rating method. While not perfect (I fear as when she starts that the very campaign as of early 2024--she mentions an event in February, may make a lot of the front-loaded content very dated very soon, for better or worse come November), given it's the first time I could bring myself to read a politician's own book, Tulsi Gabbard certainly seems to have relied on neither ghostwriter nor "as written with."

I took one of those ISideWith quizzes a couple of years ago, and it matched me closest by far to her as a theoretical presidential candidate, as to my views. She doesn't jump into the camp of the, as of this review, former president running against the incumbent. But she explains well why she left Congress after her own sadly aborted run in 2020. As a veteran who's served during one of the futile wars she has the insider knowledge of how her former party col!udes with both the national security state and the military-industrial complex to perpetuate our country's slide into destruction... That Doomsday Clock is at 45 seconds nowadays.

I liked her takes on the Bill of Rights, the freedom of religion clause, the dangers of a sitting President abusing the power of the three branches of government to eliminate his opponent, and how the surveillance of Big Tech allied with academia, media, shapers of opinion, and purported activists conspire to suppress dissent and to silence alternative views. She is firmly free speech no matter the cause. She doesn't endorse the rival party to the one she left, but rather argues that "vote blue no matter who" got the U.S. into the mess we're mired in today. She addresses many relevant topics, interspersed with her anecdotes from her upbringing in Hawai'i, her tours of duty, her experiences as a state senator and then House representative, and her reasons why she returned to her service duty.

I heard the audiobook, which enhances the encounter. I recommend that option, for she speaks in a conversational manner, never condescending or ranting. You can tell.her composure, and her commonsense outlook. She's from modest, solidly middle-class roots, with a firm confidence in her faith and a confident belief in the potential we have as ordinary folks to arrest the headlong fall into divisiveness peddled as diversity. She tells the story of civil rights leader John Lewis well. This shows her admiration for MLK's appeal to judge on the content of our character rather than the colors of our skin. Unlike many of her detractors, she's put her life on the line for the values she esposes. From a multicultural background, she embodies the best that can be, as a poised, thoughtful, and calm voice of reason. Whatever happens in her own career, for she's still in her younger forties, I hope she both guides those of us who need a path out of our present morass.

I powered through this audiobook on my commute and it is such a disappointment. She starts the book with an intentional typo (Democratic Party thank you, not Democrat Party) and proceeds with this disaster of a book with straw men, stereotypes, overgeneralizations, red herrings, etc etc. This appears to be another step in her transition from Democrat to Republican and her pitch to Trump to become his VP. She had such potential to be a real reformer. I voted for her in the 2020 election and boy did I get that one wrong.

Having heard Tulsi Gabbard speak on various news programs, I was anxious to read this book. It was great. Being a conservative, personally, I was very curious about how Ms. Gabbard 's decision to leave her former party behind was made. Wow, she did a terrific job of outlining all the problems the "elite democrats" have created in our country. She discussed how our free speech is being taken from us, she also addressed the issue the progressives have with Americans who worship God; both of these tenets being of utmost importance to Americans who have traditional values and mores. The Democrats, however, want us to forego these rights and submit to their power and overreach. She mentioned how these elitists are willing to sacrifice American freedom, well-being, and peace for their own self-serving interests (i.e. military industrial complex; war).

She discussed the way these elitists are fomenting racism in our country, stating "I am no longer a Democrat because I could not stomach associating myself with those who, in their blind pursuit of power, defy Dr. King's dream, tear our country apart, foment racism, and fuel division".

All the transgender nonsense which has come to the forefront under this current administration and how all these things are needlessly tearing our country apart was also discussed. She addresses their evil plan to tear families apart. The education our children now get in the public school system is equated to indoctrination, not education. They are even taught they may be misgendered by their parents!!!

I could go on, but PLEASE read this book for yourself. If you love America, you will not be disappointed.

Actually, I did not finish this piece of propaganda.

As a registered Republican of many years who thinks the Party has lost its focus, I saw this book at the library and decided to learn why Tulsi Gabbard--now a nominee for the Trump Administration Cabinet--left the Republican Party.

Not far into this book, I felt my blood pressure rise and wanted to slam this read against the wall. Never have I had a reaction like that to a book.

But I continued to read...

Until I reached the chapter on how the Democrats--and apparently, ALL Democrats, according to the author-- want to keep God out of society. Keep in mind Gabbard is a practicing Hindu who was sworn into office by placing her hand on "The Bhagavad Gita," the sacred Hindu text (which is a beautiful guide to living one's life, but it's not the Bible). One nation under Krishna...?

She goes into great detail about attending the funeral service in Charleston for the Black church members who were shot years ago. She mentioned that she attended with Sen. Tim Scott and a couple other Republican leaders, and she ends this part by saying they all held hands at the end and sang "Amazing Grace."

Never does she mention Barack Obama, the eulogist who surprised everyone at the end by starting to sing that hymn, prompting everyone to rise and hold hands and sing. She conveniently omitted that.

That's when I said, "I've had enough of this."

A great drinking game to play with this book would be to take a shot every time you read the words "Democratic elite." Honestly, we'd all be dead from alcohol intoxication.

Don't waste your time.

Back to the library it goes!

I typically don't write reviews on books in general, least of all, political books. As someone who has resided in Hawaii for a number of years before moving away, I've watched Tulsi Gabbard on the TV, news, and on the national stage. I've read a few of the negative reviews of this book, and I have to refute the caustic connotation they're trying to impose. If you read this book going in with a negative impression of her, or if you believe the vitriol spewed about her on TV, then save yourself the time. If you're someone who is libertarian or independent, a classic liberal like JFK, or you don't mind someone having a different opinion, read this book. Approach it with an open mind, and let her speak for herself. As someone who has also served in our military, I find it disgraceful that anyone would try to label a military member as an asset of another government without a shred of proof.

I am updating my review because I also got the Audiobook. The Audiobook is lovely. She reads it herself and there's a nice bonus song that she includes.
Here is my original review: She doesn't just lay out the challenges and issues we face today as a nation, she explains why we're here and how we can save the country. Best book I've ever read in this genre.

Standard issue cover letter book for Vice Presidential resume. Surprisingly in Tulsi's voice. I'm not sure there's anything new in here but she's got receipts for what she wrote.

Tulsi seems to have changed her view on the Second Amendment in a way that's more originalist than she's had in the past. The book needs to be read "now" because it is very current. If you read it in a year from now it will seem very dated. If you read it in five years you might not remember any of this happened.

Wow. Reads like a thriller, with so much action and truth.

Scary how this book brings to light the truths in our current landscape of politics and relationships with foreign countries.

i have been a fan of Tulsi's for years now, even though i do disagree with her on various issues.
i really appreciated hearing the reasoning behind the choices shes made recently.
i think conservatives/republicans will LOVE this book and liberals/leftists will HATE it for the same reason - she calls out the hypocrisy of the reigning democrats
free-thinkers will be appreciate it for what it is and appreciate her bravery to share the truth about the horrendous things the dnc has done without getting swept up in the 'elitist cabal' rhetoric

definitely recommend, especially during this election season.

This book is insightful, easy to read and comprehend. She manages to speak in simple terms without any flourishment or unnecessary rhetoric. I strongly recommend this book for all readers.

I wanted to read this book before her confirmation hearing for Director of Intelligence and while she touches on some valid criticisms of liberals and Democrats, her arguments often felt repetitive, oversimplified, or poorly constructed. In Chapter 2, she raises questions about balancing personal privacy and civil liberties with surveillance, which I agree is an important topic. Some examples she provides, like actions taken in the name of security that have been found to be unconstitutional, had merit. But instead of diving into the complexity of the issue, she oversimplified it, leaving her arguments feeling unbalanced and incomplete. Her take on censorship and government collaborations with Big Tech was interesting, especially since these concerns have affected both parties depending on who’s in power. She brought up some solid examples, like the Amy Coney Barrett book incident which I appreciated. However, her valid examples were overshadowed by her reliance on extreme hyperbole.

I expected a stronger defense of her problematic comments and her suspicious history with Russia. Considering how central these critiques are to her qualifications for government or national security roles, the lack of any real effort to address them feels like a deliberate dodge. Instead, the book comes across as if she’s overcompensating for her former alignment with the Democratic Party, resulting in a tone that feels repetitive and desperate. One of my biggest issues is that the book’s title suggests she will provide context for why she personally left the Democratic Party. Did the party change and leave her behind? Did she suddenly have a major shift in her beliefs? As a reader, you can assume that she believes that the party has changed more than her views/beliefs have, but she fails to sufficiently explain how the party shifted in just the last few years while also not providing any explanations on her personal stances shifting or taking any accountability for her prior beliefs (something I would think she would want to do if she had a true shift in her views). Given her strong criticisms of the party now and her current anti-liberal stance, it raises the question of why she was ever a Democrat in the first place and why she isn’t addressing her role in enabling the Democratic Party since she was a Democratic candidate for president so recently. As someone who attended one of her presidential campaign events out of curiosity, the shift in her language and beliefs is not explained in the book. While I can think of ways the party has changed on my own, she doesn’t provide that context. She makes it seem as though she never truly aligned with the Democratic party’s values, though I doubt that is the case and readers can be left to assume that her shift in parties was led by strategy, rather than a true shift in personal ideology. It made it hard to take her seriously when she’d complain about the democrats in congress as if she hasn’t just barely been one of them. The writing itself felt more like an unorganized rant than a thoughtful analysis. Phrases like “the Democratic elite” are repeated so often that they lose the impact I think she wanted them to have. Similarly to other political books of this kind, many of the claims are misrepresented, leaving the reader to do the heavy lifting of fact-checking. Ultimately, the book falls flat due to her failure in explaining why she left the party. It left me wondering how different her earlier books, written before her party switch, were from this one and what her previous brand of liberalism was like.

I have been a huge fan of Tulsi for years and the recent events, while unexpected, have only increased my admiration. Looking forward to seeing what the future brings to this extraordinary woman.

Reading Chomsky back in university did prime me but I still find it strange that I am here, given my full blown TDS case from just a few years ago. I'm still in a strange and somewhat disorienting state, frequently questioning myself and my new view (understanding , rather) of things. Only time will tell, but there are reasons for hope.

I mean, it’s what you’d think - mostly straight up propaganda of the Fox News variety. So strange to see some of this weird fearmongering rhetoric about Democrats alleged hatred of God and love of criminals from someone who previously loved Bernie and pushed sentencing reform. Also sucking up to Trump after tweeting that he was Saudi Arabia’s bitch a few years back is wild.

All that said, she has some respectable views and takes on international dynamics and I’m actually interested in learning more, but yikes some of those social/domestic views are ROUGH. I also fact checked a lot of her citations (most of which are just links to news articles or tweets) and there’s a lot of misrepresentation going on.

One of the things I found odd was that she quotes a study from the International Journal of Psychiatry, but the citation is a link to a press release from the Florida Department of Health, which then quoted the same line she did from the study. The study itself is behind a paywall. I’m left to assume that she didn’t read the study itself and is just going based off that one line, which is either irresponsible or kind of sad (you don’t have anyone who can pay for the article so you could actually cite it??).

She spends the whole book complaining that Democrats will alter their views if it means they’d earn more votes…the call is coming from inside the house babe.

Politics aside, it’s not a very well-written or organized book. It clearly was thrown together to put her in the spotlight in an election year and try to get Trump elected. I’m more interested in anything she might have written pre-2020 and would gladly read that.

Tulsi is clearly one of my favorite politicians so of course I am going to rate her book 5 stars. Anyone with any courage at all to find the truth about important matters in our culture today should get this book and educate yourself on the history of these polarizing topics. Topics such as justice, freedom, speech, religion, war, racism, truth, gender identity and family just to hit on the main points of her book. It is a clear history lesson on the truth and what the radical elite left have done to this country especially over the last two decades with the catastrophic Obama and Biden administrations. What a travesty, what a crime that continues each and every day. She wrote this book before Biden took a bow and Harris lost an election after spending a ton of money. Good riddance to both of them. It is clear why she left the Democratic party, but she is also a clear and independent thinker and has the street creed to back up her opinions including a very interesting take on war mongering since she did serve our country in Iraq and live to talk about it unlike many in the swamp. You go girl.

This is about those in power taking away our democratic process by any means necessary so that we don’t make the “wrong choice” because they feel they alone should get to decide what is the “right choice”. Tulsi does an excellent job pointing out the dangerous precedents that are being set by those who seek to undermine democracy under the guise of “saving it”.
