Huge thank you to Max Monroe LLC and NetGalley for the e-ARC! 🫶
This is my third Max Monroe book, and they’ve officially become an instant-read author for me. Every ARC I’ve picked up has been such a fun experience. I haven’t read the Parents / First Gen series yet, but it’s definitely on my TBR. My only small wish with this book? A family tree! With all the cameos and interconnected characters, a visual would’ve made things even better.
Playing Games is a college romance with a classic opposites attract setup—and it absolutely delivers.
Blake Boden is the golden boy quarterback: charming, determined, and overflowing with golden retriever boyfriend energy.
Lexi Winslow Lancaster is brilliant, neurodivergent, and laser-focused on finishing her dissertation—emotions and relationships are not part of her plan.
The chemistry between these two is off the charts 🔥. Between the witty banter, secret relationship, and laugh-out-loud moments, this was such a swoony and entertaining read.
I loved watching their dynamic evolve. Lexi’s internal struggles felt real and relatable, and Blake’s patience, devotion, and he falls first energy? Absolute chef’s kiss 😍. The pacing was spot-on, the emotional moments landed perfectly, and the balance of spice 🌶️, humor 😂, and heartfelt moments 🥹 made this the ideal college romance with depth.
Tropes I Loved:
🏈 Sports romance
💘 He falls first
💥 Opposites attract
🤫 Secret relationship
🤓 Neurodivergent heroine
☀️ Reverse grumpy/sunshine
🛡️ Protective hero
🔥 Witty banter & strong chemistry
Lexi thrives on control, logic, and data—not dating the campus football star. Blake, however, has been obsessed with her from the start. Watching him gently and persistently win her over—while fully respecting her boundaries—was everything. Lexi’s neurodivergent representation felt honest and thoughtfully handled, and Blake’s unwavering support made their romance feel authentic and meaningful.
Why You Should Read This:
A college romance with heart, humor, and heat 🌶️
Thoughtful neurodivergent representation 🤓
Opposites attract + he falls first vibes 💘
Secret dating shenanigans and witty banter 🤫🤣
A protective, genuinely supportive MMC 🛡️
Bottom line: Playing Games is smart, funny, spicy, and heartfelt. Lexi and Blake had me smiling, laughing, and swooning from the very beginning. Max Monroe continues to deliver unforgettable characters and addictive romance.
