A deadly killer stalks the rain-soaked streets of Shinbone, spreading panic and terror among the townsfolk. The authorities are baffled, partly because there hasn’t been a single crime in Shinbone for more than a hundred years but mostly because this particular deadly killer…
…isn’t actually killing anyone.
Enter Hieronymous Blush, master magician and the detective responsible for solving the mystery of The Lickspittle Leviathan. Can one man stand alone against the demonic threat of The Shinbone Shadowhunter? Of course he can’t even tie his own shoes.
I had a great time reading this. Very reminiscent of the irreverent style of Terry Pratchett and Discworld. I loved learning all about the inhabitants of Illmoor and I'd love to come back and visit again!
David has been one of my favourite authors since I was a teenager, and I'm now lucky enough to also know him as a person. He took a few years away from writing, and honestly I think it's made him even better. Every book that's been published in the last couple of years has been a triumph, each better than the last.
Shinbone is unlike the other Illmoor books as it is more of a murder mystery, but with a twist. David told me he thinks this is the best thing he's written, and it's hard to disagree. Not only did I laugh out loud a lot (I actually spent most of the 200 pages giggling to myself), but I just want to know how David comes up with these ideas.
I positively devoured this book in less than 24 hours and I have nothing negative to say, other than I could have read another 200 pages.
David has been called the natural heir to Terry Pratchett and this book is a prime example of why. I think Pratchett himself would be envious he hadn't written it.
I will always be an avid supporter of David's as he continues to wow me with such great storytelling, hilarious characters and some pretty batshit scenarios.
