Thank you NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In general, I liked the concept and plot of this book. We have a strong FMC, which is definitely my type of FMC. There are themes of mental health that are introduced to us early on in the book and that helped to make the characters seem more real/relatable. I always appreciate when books are able to weave in complex topics to help us think about different things we experience in life, without feeling overwhelming heavy.

This was definitely harder for me to get into, it didn’t pick up until about the 50% mark for me when the writing seemed to shift a bit in certain chapters. The writing seemed a little muddy and hard to get through at times, but would immediately switch to be a lot more clear and easy to read so that was kind of confusing. It’s not that I wasn’t invested, the writing style I just don’t think is for me so that made it more difficult for me to get into. I think the stark contrast of the readability of some chapters was jarring.

There were also some chapters where it seemed like pages and pages of straight dialogue and nothing else. It read more like a movie script than a book and made it confusing to keep track of who was speaking at times.

I understand how it tied in to the ki, but the constant references to sex and lust was a bit much for me. There were some elements that seemed like femdom/muscle worship and that’s just not really my type of spice so it took away from part of the book at times. All that coupled with the fact that Saffa and Soren’s relationship felt like instant love just turned me off to their relationship from the start.

Overall I think the writing style just isn’t for me.

"Dark fantasy meets the Great British Baking Show. What the Hells could go wrong?"

This story was very unique to me. Two headed dog Skagni was adorable. Who doesn't love a two headed dog sidekick? I certainly do!

The story had A LOT of dialogue and in my opinion that took something away from the story itself. I needed more story and less talk.

Unfortunately, this story was beyond my realm of intelligence and I struggled with the writing style.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to embark on this adventure.

I absolutely adored this book. The story was so thoughtfully crafted, and it had everything I look for in a great read—angst, challenges, action, and romance. The world-building was exceptional, drawing me in completely. I’m already eagerly anticipating whatever Nightwind releases next!

So imaginative, you get lost in the creations of Saffa's mind. Absolutely a great journey. Thanks for the adventure.

But in survival’s harsh ballet, even death might be an ally

With his debut novel Bane War: Fury, Jeffer Nightwind has set up a nation to fully immerse readers into the story. This is a dark fantasy romance that follows the story of our main character Saffa as she learns to harness her Mavka powers in time for the prophesized Bane War to erupt. Overall, I really liked the storyline and concept, especially the different power systems and incantations. The Great Bakeoff part was probably my favourite part; a little bit of comedy and action all in one. The character development really aligns with each character and their battles, and rather than everyone suddenly knowing how to master their powers. While I did enjoy reading this book, there was one thing that kinda ruined the experience like the constant sex references; while I know that it was explained as a primary way mavka collect the ki to use their powers, there were a few times where it was a bit excessive as if it were Saffa’s entire personality.

On a better note, reading about Saffa and Soren’s relationship throughout the novel was nice; going through their hardships and growing to understand and work alongside each other despite all that they faced. Another thing that I was thinking about while reading was if there was a glossary for all the footnotes and characters, I remember seeing them in a few other books and thought it would be a nice addition.

I want to thank Negalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

Saffa is a bad ass character, that battles through with courage and strength. She is half human and navian. She has her paramour Soren that helps and helps her through the void. Saffa is a battlemage that keeps her darkness at bay. I love the world building the romance and just the general story telling from the author. One thing I think I enjoyed was the consent between Saffa and Navian when it came to sexual advances. I would suggest this to anyone that wants rich world building and great developed characters

This is a must read story. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed his writing skills and his ability to pull me into the story from the start. This is an engaging story where Saffa is the star of this story. She is a character that made me laugh in parts and had me feeling bad for her in others. She is a strong, connectable character that is my favorite of this story. I enjoyed watching the growth of this plot throughout which made the story easy and entertaining to read. This is a well written story that is fast paced and hard to put down. I look forward to for Vol. 2 coming out. I highly recommend this must read story.

I really struggled to get into this book and I think a lot of that was the author's writing style. I always felt confused about where the story was going, but I like the 2 headed dog.

I’ll admit this isn’t my usual genre however after branching out and trying something new I’m so glad I did!!

Such an incredible piece of work, the characters, the story, the way the author was able to paint such a vivid picture in my mind made it so easy to fall into the story and just want more and more.

I was encapsulated by the characters and always kept intrigued the entire way through.

I am so glad I got the opportunity to read this incredible piece and am already so excited to see what comes next! Incredible work from an incredible author

The story is fascinating, and the quality of writing, for a debut novel, is quite impressive.

There are ways to magnify and intensify what one is trying to convey:
hyperbole (i.e. exaggeration); metaphor (meaning beyond literal); science fiction; fairy tales and magic writing. What about adding an underlayer of philosophy? slashes of ethical dilemmas?
Oh, and the sparkles of eternal truths sprinkled from the height :o) !

Imagine all of the above effortlessly combined? It would indeed take a brain that is genius at programming to accomplish such a feat; and the author's “ IT brain” must have helped.

I feel that the author has successfully shown war pertinent enormity of struggle, the profoundness of suffering, and yet- the infinity of love and human spirit's power prevails all.
"The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire".
Ferdinand Foch
The quote above seems an apt description of the essence of this very special book.

Beautiful female creatures with wings and tails exercise their strong and gorgeous muscles for hours.. helps to fight, and to charm their lovers, too, apparently... with their lacy unmentionables being coloured gold and blue- a subtle, and beautiful hint.

There are a couple of beautiful illustrations, and I wonder if the author might consider adding a few more? for they really help to grasp the atmosphere that the writing conveys.

And by the way, the love making scenes involving special magical powers that the characters possess are most intriguing, and fun to read :) and a testament to author's lionhearted imagination.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book! I though the world was very well developed and interesting, and perfect for the fantasy setting. I also loved the plot - it will definitely not be like anything you've read before! It was great to see that the book had a strong female character, and many of the sidecharacters were also likeable. However, this book is over 500 pages and felt like quite a long read, so I think the pacing could be improved so that the reader is always engaged.

Thank you to the author for giving me a copy of this book!

A well written action packed fantasy book.
The narrative is rich with well-crafted characters, intertwining paranormal romance and thrilling action,The female protagonist is very unique and intriguing such as the story as whole.

The author has a great talents to make you picture the world in your head and be excited to continue the story.

I couldn't put it down and I was very surprised how good the plot t was.

Can't wait for the next one.

I think this was just a conflict of style for me. The concept, the plot, the characters, I all absolutely loved, but the writing for me was just really really bad. I'm someone that a book plays like a movie in my head, but I could hardly imagine anything in this. Nothing felt clear. Everything felt obscure and underdeveloped and just didn't make any sense to me. I was sure by 10% this wasn't go to be for me, but I really loved the concept. I should've DNF'd..
