An impressive volume of fascinatingly written and beautifully illustrated profiles on all the amazing female characters the Star Wars Galaxy has to offer that could have easily ended up as an incredibly dry reference book but instead reads like a lover letter to these wonderful characters.

July 12, 2026Star Wars and especially its women have been a special interest of mine for a very long time, so seeing my favorite book about them had been expanded and updated was so exciting!
Now, the thing is that when you're writing a character guide for an ongoing saga, it's going to be out of date basically immediately. The original book is almost 10 years old, so an update was pretty necessary since it came out before the conclusion of the sequel trilogy, all of the Disney+ shows, and the High Republic novels...but frankly, when it came to new additions, it fell a bit flat. All of the characters from the original book are here, plus some additions for newer materials, and in all honesty? Some of the ones from the original should've been cut for space. I love a Glup Shitto more than basically anyone else, but we were missing major players like KB and Fern from Skeleton Crew, Indara and Jecki from The Acolyte, Cinta, Kleya, and Vel from Andor, and some not-as-major-but-still-important characters like Sister, Phee Genoa, Koska Reeves, Bultar Swan, Emerie Karr, everyone from Phase 2 of the High Republic, all of the High Republic women (save for Lourna, Avar, Lula, Zeen, and Vernestra), individual pages for any of the Handmaidens, and it's already out of date for missing Rook Kast, Colonel Ward, and Devon Izara. Surely we could've cut Aunt Z, Mama the Hutt, Mira Bridger, and Camie Marstrap in favor of some characters with plot relevance?
If you're looking for a coffee table read, it's good. If you want a comprehensive guide to the women of Star Wars, it's a solid start, but missing some big names.

Never in it's nearly 50 year history has the role of women in Star Wars been more prevalent than it is today. Both in front of, and behind the camera women are revolutionizing our concepts of what's possible in a galaxy far far away.
This fact is on full display in "Star Wars: Women of The Galaxy, Updated And Expanded" By Amy Ratcliffe. Starting with a foreward by Kathleen Kennedy who touts the broad spectrum of stories and roles that women can fill in today's Star wars, and leading into an introduction by Ratcliffe herself relating how Star Wars led her to her passion for writing and how the women of this galaxy have inspired her.
It's clear that the author has done extensive amounts of research on these characters from the complete character histories, to the interesting behind-the-scenes facts about some of our favorite characters. Her love for the subject matter is evident.
In addition to in-depth character profiles this book is filled with breathtaking artwork from twenty-five incredibly talented artists from all mediums. To say that you could spend days just admiring the artwork in this book is an understatement.
As a rabid fan of The High Republic, I was overjoyed at the inclusion of Avar Kriss, Vernestra Rwoh and Lourna Dee along with our favorite newlyweds Lula Talisola and Zeen Mrala.
One of my favorite parts is the small detail of including the spelling of each character's name in the in-universe alphabet of Aurebesh.
This book, has a beautiful cover and can take a place of prominence on your coffee table where it can start conversation amongst your friends. I highly recommend that you get yourself a copy when it comes out on 04/29/2025. 4.5/5 stars.

Whether being a Jedi, leader, politician, pilot or other occupations women in the Star Wars Universe have always been portrayed as strong, independent, capable and above all a power to be reckoned with-whether on the side of good or bad.

This had a nice little 1-4 page biography of each of the more important female Star Wars characters but the best thing is the illustrations. Some of them as so pretty.

*4.5. The pictures in this book were absolutely stunning. Snippets of info were interesting enough, but I loved flipping through the art.

Loved this book from start to finish! Star Wars women are some of my favorite fictional characters and I really enjoyed reading about them. The writing was excellent and while some actors were slotted in, giving their opinions, it all led back to the characters, which made them seem almost like real beings. I also appreciated the art of the book.....no photos or movie stills, just drawings. Again it leads to the idea that the characters are their own beings, separate from the actors who might play them. I look forward to the next expanded edition!
