Seeing Dead

Rate this book
This gripping debut novel from Edgar D Jackson shines a whole new light on the Scottish ghost story.

Complete with mystery, horror, emotion, and a healthy dose of Scottish humour, Seeing Dead is a mesmerising tale that questions what we know about death. You just have to see it to believe it.

It was on a foggy day in 1988 that Charlie Cooper made his way to the bus stop for the last time.

Ten years have passed since then and what remains is a town scarred by faded missing person posters. An empty seat in the local police station. A father who has become an unwanted ghost, sipping cold ones in the corner of a woodland tavern.

And apart from that, there is a girl. Amee Florence is thirteen, with mousy hair and a cool, pale complexion. She's starting her first day at school, but she's nothing like the other children. There's a secret behind her eyes that she keeps hidden. A secret that could help unfog that day in 1988, and reveal the real reason Charlie Cooper never came home.

Edgar D Jackson is an author based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was while growing up in London, England, however, that his love for writing first blossomed. As a teenager and into his twenties, Jackson became a writer for numerous culture and music magazines in the UK and the US.

While reviews and interviews became his forte, fiction was always at the forefront of his mind. Specifically, sci-fi and supernatural fiction - based on his love of early Stephen King novels and those fuzzy, eerie sci-fi shows of the early 90's.

His debut novel, Seeing Dead, works to echo those genres. Often described as a ‘Scottish Stranger Things’, this book is a unique take on the Scottish ghost story, full of twists, turns, emotions, and horrors that will keep you up at night.

Meanwhile, his second novel is a whole new story entirely. Revolving around identity and the LGBTQ+ experience, The Secret Cuckoo Cabaret Club twists the horror genre in a way that hasn’t been done before, putting the human monsters front and centre and demanding us to look beneath the pages.

Both books are a mad concoction of sci-fi, mystery, adventure, and horror, all of which have been blended in a pot to create something that he can call his own.

"Seeing Dead a sci-fi mystery set in Scotland, and it focuses on the mysterious disappearance of a schoolboy in the 1980’s.".. now there's a problem with this book blurb as I found this book a supernatural mystery, and I rarely find a supernatural story I like! And wouldn't normally pick one up. The writer Edgar D. Jackson very kindly sent me a preview copy of his book in exchange for a fair review. I loved the mystery aspects of this book following a strange girl, an outlier boy and a teacher still struggling with the events around the disappearance of his son, ten years earlier. Scotland, the town of Gealblath is the primary location for this well written, superbly plotted with a great supporting cast of characters, lightly supernatural themed mystery read. For this read I would rate a 7.5 out of 12, but as no one else has Three Starred this, I presume this is a must-read for lovers of supernatural mysteries. :)

An excellent, compelling story that blends sci-fi and horror elements with a narrative that contains real heart.

I think any Stephen King fans will like this one - there's a small town, kids growing up with creepy things happening vibe that feels quite similar while still retaining a unique and interesting voice. It's also a big book - one that really takes the time to build its characters and world so that you can't help but get attached.

The characters are great, the story compelling and the final few chapters of the book are absolutely worth the wait.

I did have the occasional minor issue at the beginning with understanding what is a flashback and what isn't (the timeline of the story is far from linear, and flashbacks happen a lot). But It's quite easy to get into the flow of it once you recognise the pattern of the narrative.

Really good stuff!

Happy pub day to Seeing Dead. This book hooked me and kept me reading through all 600+ pages. She’s intimidating but welcoming and Jackson’s writing is super solid and compelling here.

With a Stephen King vibe this delivers a story all its own set in Scotland and I was here for it.

13 year old Charlie went missing 10 years ago and his small town hasn’t changed, nor has his case been solved. David, his father, was and is still the main suspect but he wants to make things right. Enter Amme, the new girl at the school where David still teaches. She’s hiding a secret that holds all the answers. No spoilers here but this isn’t your average missing plot line (at all). Think: the sixth sense with a twist and so much heart.

My thoughts:
I loved this character driven book and the journey it takes you on. It’s spooky and deep at the same time and def gives horror vibes but is not scary per se. It’s the desperation of the characters here for me that gave Seeing Dead an edge. It’s like nothing I’ve ever read before and that’s so refreshing. It’s friendships, relationships, first love and steadfast love all rolled in together. It’s haunting and lovely both. It’s layered and profound with some paranormal mixed in just right. What a debut!

Congrats to Edgar on this masterpiece. It deserves all the hype. I can’t wait to see what you write next. Check this out friends. You won’t be disappointed!

This was a great blend of the supernatural, mystery, splashes of humour, and dealing with trauma.
There's lots of flashbacks which help piece things together, and it was easy to get attached to the characters.
The story focus is on a cold case missing child from 10 years ago, with the father as the main suspect, and a raw emotional journey of loss.
Still needing answers it dives into a suspenseful and gripping journey, and how a mysterious new girl to town might uncover what happened with her special abilities.
Partnered with the school outcast they work to find out the sinister truth.
Really enjoyed the paranormal layers to this story, and the creepy vibes alongside the loss and grief of the community.
It's a chunky book filled with great twists, a compelling mystery, a Scottish setting and a memorable plot.

Really enjoyed this book, constantly (and pleasantly) surprised by the turns the story took throughout! I felt like I was kept in suspense about what happens next right until the very last chapter. As a result, couldn't really put it down and loved all the characters and their development right until the very end. If you're looking for a page turner as the British summer inevitably runs out of steam, this is the book for you!

Seeing Dead, as soon as I heard what it was about, and the fact it was dubbed as “Stranger Things but Scottish” I was sold and knew I needed to give this a read for myself 😂

It’s quite a chunkster and I’m very glad I had last week off from work so I could devote the time it needed, but let me tell you this was a really great book!

This has it all, sci-fi (which I will admit I’m not the biggest of fans but I loved the sci-fi elements in here), mystery and horror all combine to tell this epic tale of loss and grief within a small community, and the mysteries surrounding these unthinkable acts. I was instantly hooked and at times struggled to put it down. Seeing Dead is a book I will be recommending to so many people!

First of all, I want to thank Edgar for reaching out to me and sending me his debut!

Second, read this book! 😍🖤

I took ‘Seeing dead’ with me on my holiday trip and that was the best choice I made.

From the moment I started, I couldn’t stop reading. Edgar has a compelling writing style and while I was in Italy in real life, I travelled all the way back to Scotland.

The story is written from multiple pov’s and I immediately fell in love with all the characters. They’re well described and had the right amount of depth and background information to actually feel their emotions and understand their behaviour.

They really brought the story to life!🖤

The story has flashbacks and while I loved them (because they give a lot of background information), it felt a bit too much at times. But it wasn't annoying.

This was a unique horror story. I loved the dark and eerie vibes in combination with the setting.

Was it scary? Not really, but especially David and his behaviour and the setting gave me Stephen King vibes.

It was strange and unusual, but also intense. Especially when the plot unfolds.

This is a story about loss, grief, friendship, family with a sauce of horror and dead people. And I loved every word.🫶🏻🖤

I really can’t wait for a next book by Edgar, and I’ll definitely take this one with me when I visit Edinburgh again because of course I would love to have it signed 🥰

‘Seeing Dead’ is a riveting sci-fi mystery set in a small town in Scotland. It is reminiscent of Stephen King and is very accomplished for a debut novel. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what the author does next as I thoroughly loved this book.

This is a chunky read but this allows you to truly get to know the characters and this world. Could some of the beginning section of the book be condensed, maybe, but I truly enjoyed every moment I got to spend in this world. The three main pivotal characters of Amee, Marty and Mr Cooper were all extremely well-developed and nuanced. All three were dealing with trauma in different ways and the author showed a lot of empathy in how he portrayed them to his readers. In particular, Mr Cooper was inspired in how he reacted to his cards being dealt and I was rooting for him right from the beginning. Did he make mistakes? Sure, but that is what made him come across as authentic and human.

There is a supernatural element to the book but the story is really about human emotions and how circumstances cause us to react and either evolve or devolve. But the author has a canny knack for even making you understand and empathise with the bad guys, well the main one anyhow. The friendship between Amee and Marty is the highlight of the book - pure, refreshing and a delight to read about!

This book really pulled me in and once I had figured out the timelines etc I couldn't put it down and devoured it over a weekend! The writing was immersive, sharp and at times heartbreaking. It was definitely a unique premise and I can't wait to see what comes next from the author.

Let me know if you pick this one up!

644 Pages

Ok… I know what you are thinking, 644 pages makes a chonky book. It is totally worth it. I burned through the first 300 without even realizing I had been reading that long. Mystery, paranormal, sci fi, trauma, dark humor add in a little horror element and this is a book you will devour. I cannot get over the fact that this is Edgar D. Jackson’s debut novel.
The story begins 10 years ago, with the last bus ride that a young man will make. He goes missing. The small down that he is from is consumed with finding him, but when he never returns home life goes on for everyone, but the parents. From a parent’s perspective, I wonder what would I do if this happened to one of my children? What boundaries would I push to get them back.
This linear timeline is filled with flashbacks, and once you get into the book, you will realize just how important those flashbacks are. I have never read anything like this. Friendships, and love between people and the love of a parent are so prevalent in this novel. I could easily do a book club review and talk about it for days.
“Were you with me? Where you with me even when I couldn’t see you?”
Fans of Dean Koontz – this is a must. Thank you Edgar D. Jackson, Iolanda Press and Love Books Tours for allowing me to be part of this book’s wonderful journey. I will be following this author into the future.

This story focuses around the disappearance of a young boy called Charlie. His dad was the prime suspect at the time but with no definite proof he was never charged. He has never got over this loss as it completely changed his life; his marriage fell apart due to the strain of it all. He’s now a teacher and he has a new pupil at school, Amee who is a little odd and prefers to be on her own until she befriends Marty, a boy in her year. Who is this strange new girl and could she hold the key to what happened all those years ago.

This book has been compared to a Scottish Stranger Things and I can totally see why. It is full of mystery and the supernatural which I was not actually expecting when I read the blurb so it was a pleasant surprise. We are introduced to each character a little at a time with glimpses into their past helping to tell their story. There were times when I was a little confused at where we were on the timeline but I put that down to my late night reading not the telling of the story. Although this is a hefty book it’s actually a really quick read as you will become so engrossed in the story. You can tell how much work and research has been put into this book and as a reader I really appreciate the care taken to tell this story.

I cannot get over the fact this is the authors first published book, I cannot wait to see what Edgar writes next.

This was an interesting read with some strange vibes throughout. It reminded me very much of a Stephen King novel. Seeing Dead is a mixture of mystery and paranormal. 10 years earlier 12-year-old Charlie Cooper went missing on his way to the school bus, never to be seen again. Over time, Charlie was forgotten by all but his dad David, a local teacher. When a new girl arrives in town, a big mystery follows. Amer the new girl makes friends with Marty, the school outcast and they both become embroiled in a series of events involving David, seeing dead people and a mysterious hospital wing. There are a lot of flashbacks in this book and at times I was confused by what was a current event and what was a flashback. This is a big book and it took a while to develop the characters and for me to get into the story, however, once I did, I enjoyed it. I wanted to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Amee and her special ability and the secrets around Charlie‘s disappearance. I really liked the character of David. He was just a father who was hurting and needed answers about his son. I think that all of this was the driving force of his actions and he wasn’t a really a bad person, I enjoyed the story and premise of the book once I got into it.

As the book was set in Scotland, I really wanted to read it. I also loved the cover, and the blurb really intrigued me. I believed I was going to read a crime/thriller story, but what I read was a supernatural/horror/mystery. I really enjoyed that, though!
Do not be put off by how big this book is, 641 pages is a lot, and the books chonky, however when I started reading, almost 300 pages had passed before I put it down again!
I did then slow a little, from pages approximately 300-500, I wasn't completely invested - I'd say this was where things got a little darker, and I do not like horrors at all, so this could have been why I lost my grip a little at this section.
The ending and explanations were a little open - I'd have liked more on how things were explained to the police and townspeople. I don't think I'd just accept things like that happening in my town without an explanation, so I'd like to have known how they did that.
The characters are fantastically written, they are wonderfully flawed, their relationships are real, and dramatic.
I'm astonished that this is a debut piece of work. It belies much more experience. I foresee a long and successful career for this author, and I'd love to read more of his in the future.

I would start by saying that I feel this is more of a paranormal mystery than a sci-fi mystery, but a mystery it is!
13-year-old Charlie went missing without a trace 10 years ago. The case has never been solved. His father David, a school teacher, was the main suspect, and there are still people who believe he had something to do with his son's disappearance. Then a new girl enrolls in school, and there is something weird about her. She is hiding a secret that holds all the answers. She befriends Marty, a bullied teenage boy. Together, they are trying to unravel what happened to Charlie, but not only that: what is the exact deal with Amee?

It is very character-driven, and the desperation of the main characters gives the book a raw edge. It is haunting and beautiful. The vibes are unsettling, you know that something is wrong, but you can't really put your finger on what exactly is wrong. The plot twist at the end was amazingly well done, and it genuinely surprised me!
I also liked the use of the flashbacks. It gave a lot of background information and insight into the characters.
It is about loss, grief and friendship, with a creepy, eerie vibe, and oh yeah, dead people.

Ten years ago, Charlie Cooper made his way to the school bus for the last time. One moment he was there, the next gone and never found. The town always thought it was his father who was to blame for his disappearance even if they couldn’t prove it. So when thirteen year old Marty and Charlie’s Dad disappear, they think it’s confirmation that Mr Cooper is no good and this time he’s done something to Marty. But the truth is much more complicated than anyone could ever imagine and it also involves a new girl called Amee, who recently started at Marty’s school. Amee has a secret of her own too!

This debut novel is no ordinary mystery; it has a strong supernatural theme and as the story unfolds, you slowly start to understand what is really going on and I have to say it really is quite imaginative. The book, at 641 pages long, could seem long or daunting but actually you get so absorbed in it that you will have it finished before you realise. If you like books with a supernatural theme, (reminiscent of Stranger Things for me), then I’d definitely recommend this one. I found the ending and conclusion very satisfying.

I just want to say don't let the 644 pages put you off, just keep reading and you won't be disappointed.
This book has a bit of everything...mystery, sci-fi, horror, secrets, lies and even some humour. Charlie Cooper seen the school bus pull up, he knew he only had two minutes to get on the bus before it would pull away. His friend was sitting near the rear window next to an empty seat (something for you to remember). Ten years later and nothing has changed since that day Charlie disappeared. 13 year old Amee Florence is a new girl at school, but Amee isn't like any of the other girls at school, she has a secret. Will Amee's secret help solve the disappearance of Charlie on that day in 1988, does she know something that someone is hidden? Is what happened still got something to do with someone that lives near by? It's a book that I really want to tell you more about but I don't want to give anything away. I had to read it in a few sittings, but putting it down wasn't easy and had me thinking even when I wasn't reading it

Seeing Dead takes you on an emotional journey through friendships, loss, grief and love.

Young Charlie Cooper disappears without a trace on his way to school, in the small town of Gealblath on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Ten years later, nervous and shy Amee shows up with secrets that may reveal the mystery of Charlie’s disappearance (swipe for full synopsis).

I was expecting a sinister ghost story full of slow burn horror and intrigue but what I got was so much more. I was swept up with the charm of the characters, with the heartache woven throughout and the haunting atmosphere of remote Scotland and Cornwall.  Seeing Dead seamlessly blends horror, mystery and sci fi and is laced with a dry humour that cuts through some of the more heartbreaking moments.

This was a powerful and poignant ghostly tale packed with endearing characters that stole my heart.

I absolutely loved the vibe and flow of this book. It has a creepy mystery feel and the overall style of a few well known supernatural mystery styles. It is written exceptionally well for a first time author and I was very surprised to find out it was their first published book.
I loved the characters. We are given a few different mains that all have their own place. Each is unique and given a great depth of personality and characteristics that stand out. You almost feel as though you know them.
The writing style and pace really make this story excellent as the pace ebbs and flows, drawing you in with each pull of the string. It is hard not to fall madly in love with the book and be rather hooked on knowing just what happened and what's behind it all. I need more from this author.

When I first spotted this book, I knew that I had to read it!
The full moon seascape and that title just promised sinister and creepy and I couldn't wait to get my teeth into it!

I have to say that when it arrived, my heart stopped! At over 600 pages, this is definitely not for the faint hearted - or those with weak arms! It's a big one!
But once I got stuck in, I absolutely flew through this and was so immersed that I didn't even notice the number of pages!

When I was younger I used to devour horror reads by the day and after many years away, I've recently picked back up and can't get enough again.
Although this is probably more mild horror than some, it was perfect for introducing it back into my tbr.

Along with the horror aspect, this was packed with mystery and intrigue, dark secrets and even interwoven with some humour which just lightened the mood at times.

I loved the concept of the storyline which has us really contemplating, what does happen after death. With the added paranormal and sci-fi elements - this had me completely hooked right from the start.

The characters were all beautifully presented over the first part of the book and there was a lot to endear us to them!
Each one felt relatable in their own way and I particularly connected with Marty and Mr Cooper.
As we learn about the traumas they are dealing with, I found myself drawn to their plight which had me rooting for them throughout.

This was such a compelling storyline, unique premise, perfect setting and was so well written that I can't believe it is a debut novel.
It's possibly one of my favourite reads this year and I'm really excited to see more from this author in the future!

What a debut novel! Set between Scotland and Cornwall this book is the story of Charlie Cooper, a boy who disappeared in the 1980’s. His dad David has never given up on finding out what happened to Charlie. Ten years on teacher David, with the help of school children Amee and Marty, attempts to do just that. With elements of mystery, thriller, sci-fi, horror, ghosts and grief (I admit to some tears!) this book would suit a wide readership. The work that must have been undertaken in creating this tome would have been extraordinary. I must note, do not be put off by the 600+ pages, it reads easily and smoothly. I was compelled and engaged to keep reading to the end. I recommend you buy a copy and read it for yourself.

Seeing Dead is a mystery thriller with lashings of the paranormal and a dash or two of horror and sci-fi.

At 644 pages, it's a hefty tome, and definitely not for the faint of heart, but the length of the book allows the reader to become fully immersed in this excellent Scottish mystery.

It's quite dark in parts, it's emotional and full of intrigue, but to lighten the mood, the author has expertly woven some great humour into the story.

It's a thought provoking read that will have you questioning, what happens after death and I'm sure, as for me, it's a read that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

I read this in three sittings.

A truly impressive debut novel.

Review:
This book immediately pulled me in. I love thrillers & this one did not disappoint. The characters/places were described in a way that made you feel like you were a fly on the wall watching everything. The balance between the thriller, humor, horror & supernatural elements made it so hard to put the book down. Just a fair warning you will get so immersed you might forget you have responsibilities (to my kids, i’m sorry about your burnt omelette 😅).

I will add I am not a fan of flashbacks but in this case it was crucial to the story & definitely got the gears going in your head.

Overall I highly recommend it. Even if thrillers is not your thing, I feel like this is a good introduction to this genre.

The book starts in 1988 Scotland, where a boy - Charlie Cooper - walks to the school bus stop but never makes it there. Over time, the town sort of forgets. Posters are tattered, worn, and faded. Moving toward to today, a young girl who is both an oddball and loner moves to town and may hold the missing piece to discovering what happened to Charlie.

I couldn’t decide the correct genre for this one. Sci-fi? Mystery? Horror? Supernatural? The author’s voice is certainly his own but I felt similarities to Stephen King when reading this book. And not only because it weighs in over 600 pages, much like many of King’s.

Definitely worth a read. Would love to know your thoughts!

‘Seeing Dead’ is a pretty epic book both in size and story. But don’t be put off by the fact that it’s 641 pages long as this book is such a quick read mainly because you will be staying up late into the night desperate to know what is going to happen next. I was absolutely gripped from the first page and I just couldn’t put it down.

I loved all the characters but especially Marty - the ‘weed-kid’ - he just felt so real to me and so determined to help his friend. I actually can’t believe this is a debut novel, it’s so good! I can’t wait to read more Edgar D. Jackson in the future.

I’m a fan of multiple POV and Amee’s was certainly interesting. I’m also a fan of flashbacks and enjoyed Marty and David’s - file them away for later when they will be pertinent. Some editing cuts would have been welcome on that part. Some of the most likable parts of the book include: it’s not predictable, great mystery, and plenty of action - ramped up in the last quarter of the book! We are definitely fed plenty of clues along the way, be on the lookout. The book was too long for me at 647 pages but it was well done.

The story centers around Marty, an easy target for school bullies, David, a teacher at the school, and Amee, a new girl at the school with a spooky talent. 10 years before a boy named Charlie went missing and was never found. This book is long at over 600 pages but it goes by fast. I read between the physical book and ebook which meant that I could read it wherever I went. I liked the characters. They are relatable and bring you into the story. This is not an ordinary story and if you like twists and sci-fi, you will want to check out this book.

This was a chunky book, but so worth the read. This book sucked me in from the very beginning and kept me captivated. This book is spooky with sci-fi vibes. When a boy goes missing without a trace case never to be solved. 10 years later, Amee is the new kid in school who may have all the answers to the missing person’s case. How are these two children connected and why? This book gave me Stephen King vibes and I highly enjoyed this book. Highly recommend!

Seeing Dead is a sci-fi mystery novel by Edgar D. Jackson.
❤️ Blurb -
Seeing Dead a sci-fi mystery set in Scotland, and it focuses on the mysterious disappearance of a schoolboy in the 1980’s.
The story picks up ten years after the case with three different characters. Marty Evans, a bullied teenager, nicknamed ‘the weed-kid’ by his peers. David Cooper, a tired and time worn teacher, who has spent years being a ghost in the walls of a town that wants him gone. And lastly, Amee Florence, the new girl in school. A girl who claims she keeps seeing a boy who disappeared over ten years ago...

💓 Review -
I loved this novel. It had me hooked from the very first page and I couldn't stop reading until the end. I loved the place settings in the book and the great mix of characters. For a debut novel, this book was brilliant and I'm sure that the author has a brilliant writing career ahead of them. Overall, a brilliant novel that I would recommend to other readers. I look forward to reading more by the author.

The horror is really atmospheric and
the author does a really good job of building the attachment to the characters and I was really rooting for them by the end. It’s paced well and I enjoyed the flashbacks to the past it works well and made for a really interesting narrative.
