Why Read On Marriage and Family Life?
This work is a profound resource for Christians seeking to navigate the complexities of marriage and family with faith, love, and devotion. St. John Chrysostom’s timeless wisdom continues to inspire and guide families in their spiritual journey.
I have been married almost 20y and for the Lord’s grace, we’ve been very happy. Many of the things I have learned in all these years (to lots of hardship!) I could have learned by just reading this book. It is a must for young people who are called to marriage, it is a solution for the hogwash our culture offers. Can’t recommend this enough
This book is full of truth and wisdom and the writing is very accessible and easy to understand! Even though it was written over 1,600 years ago, the messages still ring true today - guiding Christian couples on how to live a happy and holy life with each other, firmly rooted in their faith. St. John’s homilies have given me a greater understanding of not only Christian marriage, but of Christ’s love he had and continues to have for his Church.
These homilies are unlike anything I have ever experienced. Modern sermons are concerned about Greek words and interpretive debates. Chrysostom, although not entirely accurate at times, makes godliness DESIRABLE.
He covers a wide range of topics, including the reason for marriage, marrital sex, complimentarianism, parenting, wedding ceremonies, and how to find a spouse. In doing so, he goes further than even what most pastors are willing to.
One small note: I would present this book to anyone who believes that complementarianism is an outdated belief of the ignorant past, when misogynistic values prevailed in the Church and society. Chrysostom could not have imposed a heavier burden on the husband. He stresses that a man must always be meek, patient, and loving of his wife, regardless of the way she treats him. Yes, he must go so far as to be willing to put down his life for this one woman! Is this misogyny? I think men would rather say, "it is better not to marry" (Matthew 19:10), if they understood what they were in for. The Biblical standard for husbands to love their wives is impossibly high. It is the opposite of misogyny.
