Poisonous mists settled in the lowlands 17 years ago, rendering ninety percent of the land uninhabitable and killing over half the population. Most blame their misfortune on industrialization or the fey, but some curse Snow White, the princess who was born poisoned.

As the only person who can survive entering the poisoned woods without a gas mask, Snow White has dedicated her life to studying the poison and finding a cure. This obsession draws her deeper into the woods and its secrets, where nothing is as it seems. “The people in the village silently worshiped Snow White, but the servants feared her. They remembered the beauty and kindness of the late queen. They never forgot that she’d died by her daughter’s hand.”

This was an interesting retelling of Snow White, but I did get confused in places.

I felt really sorry for Snow White at the start of this book. Watching her mother die the way she did, and being the cause of it must have been awful, and to then be locked up because of it was shocking.

She doubled over, grabbed my shoulder, and pulled me close for a brief, sweet kiss. “It’s not your fault. I love you.” Then she fell.

The storyline in this followed Snow White in the time after her mother’s death, as well as a girl called Rose who along with her father had rescued Snow White from her tower prison. I did get very confused by this story at points though. I didn’t quite understand the flowers Snow White was collecting, or the relevance of the man that Rose rescued?
Hopefully there’ll be more answers in the second instalment.

I was generous. It's more of three and half stars for me.
I think it took me like... 3 hours tops to read this book. It was free for kindle.
So, a Snow White twist. Such an interesting idea. I don't know why it's broken into three books. This definitely read like part one of a book. A lot of questions still but I'm very interested in where the books go.
The main reason it is knocked down to 3.5 instead of 4 is time period inconsistencies. The author uses German words occasionally and it seems like maybe its supposed to be set there or a made up country in that area of Europe. It also mentions a prince from Prussia. At the beginning it said it was 1871 or something. Guns, trains, and airships are mentioned. But also, at one point Snow White said someone sucked. I'm fairly sure that's not appropriate language. I can forgive other slight inconsistencies as creative license but that saying definitely doesn't qualify. That seems like bad writing.
Overall, I find the premise interesting enough to continue.

It was o.k, the storyline was interesting and different but i really didn't like the way the author wrote, characters were having full blown conversations with themselves whilst conversing with other characters it all got a bit too confusing as to who said what who knew what.

So snow white in this version is part of the poised lands killing her own mother accidentally with her poisonous kiss, she has to wear a mask all her life, now in this version i don't get if she is beautiful or ugly but lets just say she looks different, her friend Rose (who i really didn't understand) likes sitting in a tower with all snow whites mothers belongings yet snow white and her are close....

Although the plotline good characters are one dimensional and confusing.

I found this a bit hard to follow. Something happened that poisoned the world Snow White lives in, and it sounds like she's in modern day at times, and then like it's still a classic period. I'm not understanding how her 'sister' is related to her as it sounds like they're the same age, and then at one point, she refers to Snow White's dad as 'Snow White's dad' and not hers?
I don't get what the tower is other than that it was significant in some way and Rose was supposed to open it, but there was someone locked up in there? Why would she be sent to open it for someone's arrival if someone was locked in there? I also don't think the forest and some things in it were described well enough to really understand. I don't know. I enjoyed it, but I'm left a bit confused. I'm going to read the next one and hope that it makes more sense.
I also wish it would have just been one book. I hate how these books are less than 100 pages and stand alone when they should all really just be one book.

Completely stupid.

I kid you not. There was barely a plot; there's no good buildup of suspense. It may seem to be a retelling of Snow White, but it isn't. It's actually Rose Red (or something like that) and Snow White fairy tale retelling.

Easily said is that Poisoned is poisoned. Yes, it is poisoned. Somebody ruin this book. It would had been a complete book if all three volumes were together and forever.

Alas, it isn't so nothing makes sense. And neither do I.

What a pleasant surprise this freebie was! Barring a handful of grammatical errors (mainly homonyms) and a need to reformat the epub to separate out chapters, Poisoned was a delight to read. Pine's writing is evocative and engaging and her twist on a fairytale is a novel one. I'll definitely read more of her work.

Quick read but little development and originality

I purchased this as a free ebook. I'm not sure I like this enough to read the rest of the series.

In this retelling of Snow White, her kingdom is surrounded by a poisoned forest that makes "modern" technology malfunction. Like her late siblings, she is poisoned. It isn't explained why she's poisoned and why she is the only one who can survive and thrive in the forest. Snow White made a dreadful mistake as child that permanently altered her and her subjects' lives.

While she is locked in a tower, she learns about the plants in the forest. Then she meets Rose who swears to protect her, but Snow White's uncle (Rose's father) wants to kill her to secure the kingdom as his.

There was minimal character development. Rose doesn't have nearly as much development as Snow White. The conflict is pretty minimal as well, and I would dislike trying to get through it in three ebooks. From the vantage point of the first in the series, I assume the plot could fit into one ebook.

This was a quick read, but I think the sentence structure was almost too simplistic. The dialogue and thoughts of the characters was one note. The points of sarcasm and danger was very predictable--no originality. Why are all the men mysteriously dangerous and possibly evil?

**No spoiler review**

This was better than I thought it was gonna be. I originally read it because I love the cover and it's been on my kindle a while so I thought I should read it.

I should have read this when I first downloaded it onto my kindle. It was so much more interesting than I ever could have imagined or hoped for.

"And I remembered the relief I felt when the fever finally broke. I'd handed her back to her mother, who'd looked down at her baby as if she were a miracle. Women always thought their children were regardless of what they became."

When I first read this book I had no intention of reading the rest of the series and for that I apologise profusely. That was wrong of me. I will never again assume that I won't be finishing a series before I've even had a chance to read the book.

The plot, characters, everything was just so fascinating. I loved the idea of the poisonous forest. Everything was executed so well.

"But those things didn't matter when you loved someone. You'd fight for them even when it was hopeless. Even when it made no sense."

I'm happy to tell you that I will be reading the rest of the series.

Snow White: skin as white as snow, hair as black as night, and lips full of poison. After young Snow White accidentally kills her mother, she becomes determined to help all that are affected by the poisonous gas in the forests and her poisonous touch.

Interesting retelling of the story of Snow White and Rose Red. I appreciated the twist of Snow White's poisonous lips and the forest. I did find some things to be a little confusing, such as the time period or some of the settings. Also, Snow White's voice and Rose's voice were so similar to each other that I had a hard time discerning chapters once the point of view began to switch back and forth.

This book was pretty short and had no ending (grr), but it was a good taste of the series.

Snow White is one of my favorite fairy tales and this retelling has some pretty good turns. It was a quick read and I feel like the books could be one instead of a series. I didn't have trouble following how characters were related but the time setting was a little confusing with only the first books information.

I liked that book a lot. Most books this short seemed rushed but I'm glad it ended like it did. It was enough that I still want to read the second, but i am also satisfied with the first.

“The people in the village silently worshiped Snow White, but the servants feared her. They remembered the beauty and kindness of the late queen. They never forgot that she’d died by her daughter’s hand.”

I read this book as part of the Snow White Volumes 1 to 3 bind up and it was also the first book i had read by this author. I enjoyed reading this book so much that as soon as I finished reading it I immediately started reading the second book (The Mirror) in the bind up. This was a really twisted retelling of Snow White with the story of Rose Red thrown in for good measure. Snow White is a complex character who it was hard not to feel sorry for due to the fact that she is poisoned like the kingdom she is Princess of, and the fact that she is guilt ridden because she's responsible for her mother's death. It was great how Katherine twisted the sentient mirror into an actual person who'd been imprisoned in a dungeon, the poisoned apple being the fact that she was born with a disease ('poisoned') and the wicked stepmother with the evil that lurks in the poisoned kingdom.

All the characters were well written and believable if not always likable. I loved the fact that all the male characters were portrayed as being grotesque although they did have some redeeming characteristic like beautiful eyes or showing great love.
Snow White comes across as quite a confusing character because although she is fairly strong, determined and loving she also doubts herself so much that she believes she's the one who's poisoned her kingdom rather than the mining accident being the reason its poisoned. The story skips from her young self to her present day life but in both, she is a very depressive character but it is understandable as she's not only been born 'poisoned' but is also the reason her mother is dead. She met Princess Rose when she panicked in the aftermath of killing her mother and tried to escape the tower.
Princess Rose was quite a confusing character to understand because her words and deeds tend to have alternate meanings. Although her father, the king wants Snow White dead she attempts to stand by Snow White until the end. Yet she nor the King stop Snow White from running into the poisoned forest. By the end of the book, it was starting to become clear that she was going to become the evil queen because she'd found the man who called himself Mirror, so the Mirror.

The style in which the book was written could be a little confusing to follow because at the start of chapters it was hard to tell whether it was being set in the present or past. However, once I got into the chapter properly it became much easier to decipher when it was set.

I thought the twist to the lore of Snow White in this book was really imaginative and wish that I had come up with it! This is why I started reading the next book in the series so I could end some of the loose ends and the cliffhanger from the first book.

This book is a YA sci-fi Romance Fairytale Retelling and it fits very well into these genres so I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys books from the genres.

The tale of Snow White is a common one to have heard- the fairest in the land, the wicked queen, a poisoned apple and true loves kiss. But Katherine Pine has written her own twisted version.

Snow White is a confusing character. Shes so self-doubtful that she actually believes that she is poison to her kingdom. The book skips from her younger self to her present day life and in both she is still a depressive character. At a young age when her mother was killed (not spoiling why) Snow White panicked and tried to escape from her tower, leading herself into the arms of a neighbouring Princess Rose.

Princess Rose is a difficult character to understand, her words have alternate meanings. Even though her father, the king, wants Snow White dead Rose still attempts to stand by Snow till the end. Yet he doesn't stop her from running into the Poisoned Forest. During the end of the book i started to have this prediction that Rose will end up being the evil queen since she'd found Mirror.

The writing style was a bit confusing to follow, i couldn't tell which time the chapters were set since the book jumped from past to present time. But once i got into the chapter properly it became easier to decipher what year/day it was set.

The idea of this book has to be the most imaginative twist on the lore of Snow White, i wish i'd thought of it! Im begging to read the next book just to have an end with the questions that are now harassing my brain. Plus the story is left with an unimaginable cliff hanger that had me dying for more!

Simply amazing.

Poisoned, the first installment in Katherine Pine’s Snow White trilogy, offers an intriguing twist on the classic fairy tale, set against a dark dystopian/fantasy backdrop. While the premise and world-building show promise, the novella ultimately feels more like a chapter than a complete story.

Upon finishing Poisoned, I was left with far more questions than answers. The plot hints at deeper mysteries and character arcs, but feels like a chapter in a story rather than a self-contained narrative. Instead of a standalone narrative, this novella reads like the beginning of a longer, continuous story that’s been arbitrarily divided.

In fact, after skimming the preview for the next volume, it's clear that the next book picks up right where Poisoned leaves off, almost as though it’s the next scene in the same book rather than a sequel with its own structure. This format might work better if all three parts were compiled into a single volume; reading them separately can feel disjointed and incomplete.

That said, the Snow White reimagining in a dystopian world is a creative and compelling concept. It’s just unfortunate that the execution doesn’t allow for much standalone review, as nothing quite feels settled or fully developed by the end of this first part.

If you're considering reading this series, I’d recommend looking for the Snow White Volumes 1–3 Box Set, if only for the sake of narrative cohesion. Taken individually, these novellas may leave readers feeling as though they’ve stopped mid-sentence.

Pros: Great idea, good characters, back story
Cons: Wish it was more detailed, the character's all had the same voice when reading
Overall rating: Easy to read

Review:

I am all about a different spin on a fairy tale story. This was a great spin on the Snow White tale. I am not a fan of the short story format of it though. I think that with this though we run into a problem. The characters all seem to come off the same when you are reading them. The worst is when you are dealing with Snow White and Rose. They are like the same people when you are reading their parts.

I think that with any story, the author had a great idea going in. I think that Katherine had a great idea when she started out, but I think that the execution was lacking. Getting the story from head to paper is definitely different.

I think that this should have been a full book, not divided into three shorter books. That might have made it easier to read, but I am not too sure about that. I am just very confused about a few things in this story.

3.5 stars.

I liked this far more than I thought I would. I have a lot of questions that need answers, but with Poisoned that works as an advantage. It was very intriguing and I'm quite interested in how this will all turn out. The characters actually have some good personalities, which is good given the complicated things they're going through. There's good guys and evil villains, but they're out numbered by the ones that are hard to tell where they fall. It all works really well together.

The only thing that kind of threw it off a little for me was the usage of modern terms and gestures. It was small and only happened in two instances, but it was weird reading it with the old-world classic fairytale setting that it was used in.

A fresh retelling of Snow White, she isn't tricked into biting the poison apple. She is the poison apple.

This was quite interesting, but... I mean, the author gave Snow White's tale a new atmosphere, a completely new plot. We're used to a little girl with black hair and pale skin poisoned by the evil stepmother... the mirror, the dwarves, the hunter etc.
Now we're in a totally different world. Snow has no parents, she killed her mother when she was four. She didn't do it because she wanted to - she's some kind of a magical creature. She's poisoned, this is why people stay away from her - though only her lips could actually kill someone. I mean, there's even this vampire in the middle of the story, this dark atmosphere I should like... but other things I didn't understand. I believe the whole story is a little bit confusing... Why is the wood poisoned? Why does Rose call Snow "sister" when she's clearly not? Well, I guess I should give Snow White #2 a chance...

I was skimming the other reviews, and a lot of people seemed to have strong feelings that the book was not well written or confusing, or they really liked it.

I fall in to the "I liked it" category. This seemed really removed from the snow white stories I remember (I remember reading my fairy tales but don't remember that much about Rose Red and Snow White) in this story she's the Poisoned Princess of a very Poisoned Kingdom. She is, but she isn't, there are some things that this book doesn't quite cover, like what happened to her Father, and what relation the new occupants of her castle have to her.

I liked the dark creepy elements, and though Snow White has a lot to be troubled about, she still manages to be a strong person. I would read the other books to find out the mysteries, they were a compelling enough read for me to follow the story arc.

Negative one star?
What a flucking hot mess!

You know how you sent that text message? .. OOPS?! Big mistake and a typo fit to embarrass you forever?
I think a rough rough, sandpaper rough draft was sent instead of a first do-over, in this case. Like YIKES!

Verb tense is inconsistent and all over the place. Like, yeah... skip ... okay...?
World building is like a multi unit dwelling in the middle of a schizophrenic malfunction. Truly. Pick a place, era, dimension, or a complete thought.
Characters are flatter than a burnt pancake and tasteless as one, too. I can connect with the cosmo more easily.

If you need to feel better about your own writing, read this. There is only one writer I've come across who is worse than this one ...

I thoroughly enjoyed this fantastical story that feature a much more macabre side of the Snow White tale. Who doesn't love a good fairy tale reinvention with an incurable illness that plagues everyone including the main character? It switches viewpoints between the two female leads of the story Rose and Snow White, two completely opposing personalities and differing physical appearances, but they are similar in their indecision of moral issues like freeing a shackled man or killing a man while he's unconscious. It ended kind of abruptly on a cliffhanger, but it left me wanting more, which seems to be the perfect way to end it.

Three stars really is generous, and I give it that because I think it has so much potential. I view this book as one that is still a work in progress, it clearly needs more editing. The premise and basic plotline have so much to offer, and I think the author should really work on developing it more. As the book stands now, I probably would only have given it a one, simply because it is so basic that is feels like a first draft, but I give it three in hopes that will encourage the author to keep working on it. It is free for the kindle, and took me just over an hour to read.

This was an artistic take on the the childhood fairytale, Snow White. Filled with poisoned people, poisoned woods and unusual characters. Im not sure if I liked it or not, but it definitely didn't engage me enough to continue reading the series, unfortunately. I'm sure the story would progress into a well written story based in what I have already read, but I did find it hard to follow and wrap my head around a few characters and some points. I also have to add that I did get this for free so I truly wasn't expecting a five star book either. I would rather read other series. :)

Really clever take on the fairytale.

I'd never read this author before, but chanced across this book as a free kindle offer and was very pleasantly surprised. A little short for my tastes, but it's well written, with good character development, and had me hooked from the start.

There's a point of view switch which I found to be well executed, and really added to the character interest. I'm off now to buy the next in the series!

Inspired, amazing, and I couldn't put it down. I have a weakness for YA paranormal, but this was seriously way more than I expected. It's the best spin-off of a fairy tale with paranormal elements. This was a quick read that I enjoyed despite not being able to completely follow everything. I get that Snow White is poisoned because of the forest surrounding them. I get that her "sister" Rose wants to protect her from the current ruler (Rose's father) who is waiting for the right time to kill Snow White to solidify his rule. Everything else was kind of choppy but I am definitely intrigued enough to read the next book in the series.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I didn't expect it to be the way that it was. It was a different take on Snow White that didn't just stick to the original.
I just loved it and wish it had been longer. I enjoyed the book all the way through, even the ending. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book.

I loved it! the thought that every thing is not always what they seam.... Her kiss kills and life is not perfect. Has anyone else noticed how the mom always dies before the dad in most fairy tales, or is it just me? Well regardless I loved it! If only I could ever find the 2nd book. When i start a series I end up liking I can never find the rest of the books. UGGGGGGGGG!!!

It was so different that it got 3 stars. (Instead of 2.) The writing isn't as solid as it should be, and the details are alarmingly absent. However, it's a truly interesting premise with some fun ideas. I felt the author barely scraped the surface with the plot, though.

I thought this was really creepy, which is awesome, but it was really confusing.
It jumps scenes without smooth transitions and it ended so suddenly I was thinking I somehow ended up with a book missing a huge section.

I loved the way Mirror was portrayed and I am so curious where this story is going so I will definitely be looking for the next one.
