Mash and friends' rivalry with the Magia Lupus culminate in an epic showdown that tests their limits. The volume also explores the backstory of some of the supporting characters, adding depth to the world of MASHLE.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a Shonen Jump manga that follows the story of Mash Burnedead, a magicless protagonist in a world full of magic. The manga is a comedy with a vibe akin to a mashup of One Punch Man and Harry Potter.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a hilarious and action-packed manga that is sure to delight fans of shonen manga. The series features a lovable cast of characters, epic battles, and plenty of humor. If you're looking for fun and entertaining read, MASHLE is worth checking out!

Actually had a ton of fun with this one and I laughed out loud a couple times. With the expanding roster of characters, the gags are landing more and I’m kind of interested in where the plot will go.

I should be tired of this series by now since it only has one joke, but I just cannot get enough of Mash Burnedead walloping magic users in the face. Even when I start to get bored by the introduction of a bunch of new characters and expansion of the magic government bureaucracy, Mash makes me chuckle and everything's okay.

Another great volume.

We get the final boss of this arc, thorny dude, and Mash just does his thing, but this time teaming up with a magic user to deliver some badass fight scenes. The jokes fly high here, making me laugh quite a few times. The crazy zanny last two chapters were just what I needed too. Great stuff overall! A 4 out of 5.

For this trimester I read a relatively new weekly manga series called Mashle: Magic and Muscles by Hajime Komoto. Since the series is relatively short (only around 60 chapters at this time) I decided to review everything up until this point. The main theme so far in the manga is just discrimination against those that are different and lower classes and working for acceptance which is very evident throughout the series. Although the idea for the story isn’t exactly the most original and you can definitely see similarities between this series and others, it was still extremely interesting and enjoyable.

So a brief summary of the series is that in this world people are born with marks indicating magic power which has become very crucial to society. As such anyone born without a mark and born without magic is to be killed. Our main character Mash Burnedead was born without a mark and in order to compensate for this his father (adoptive father) made him work out. However, one day people learn of his condition and in order to restore peace to his normal life he needs to attend a magic school and gain the position of divine visionary so that society would be forced to accept him. If you have read One Punch Man and Harry Potter, the similarities are very obvious. A main character where a normal guy works out to become overwhelmingly strong and a world with magic with lots of discrimination.

The main themes are pretty evident from the beginning. In addition to discrimination against people with no magic (I guess it’s a little more severe than discrimination since they kill people without magic) there’s also discrimination against people in lower classes and those who are less skilled. This can be seen in Lemon who is used in order to distract Mash during the entrance exam in exchange for allowing her to pass. When she ultimately fails at her task and Mash ends up saving her the instructor ridicules them saying that they “positively reek of commoner” and shouldn’t be at this academy which is only meant for the higher up classes. In addition to this Mash’s friends Finn and Dot are often made fun of for their lack of ability. Dot is a bit of a special case since his true power only comes out when he’s very emotional (not in a sad way though). Finn is made fun of because of how he lacks ability compared to his older brother who was the previous year’s divine visionary. Working towards acceptance is also evident in how Mash has to work for the position of divine visionary so that people will have to accept his magicless status. One of his closest friends/rivals Lance is also in a similar position where his sister is losing her magic and he also wants to achieve the position of divine visionary to ensure that his sister won’t be killed.

Although this all sounds pretty serious and kind of terrible, the series is still extremely funny and good to read. To be completely honest, it’s so funny that it’s kind of easy to forget what’s at stake although the series has done a good job at keeping everything relevant to the story. I won’t really go into it here since I feel like that would spoil the fun, but because of these things I gave the series 5 stars.

Goodness gracious alive, I love this series. It is just so, so much fun and so, so good. The fights continue to be entertaining, engaging, and spectacularly drawn and Mash continues to be the bestest bad-ass ever. It was great meeting the other Divine Visionaries (Renatus is my husbando, don't @ me) and it was great seeing Rayne and the Headmaster again. Also, Mash turning the magic parasite into a balloon animal is equal parts disgusting and hilarious, love it.

This series continues to be an absolute delight to read and while I hate waiting for more, I'll impatiently wait for the next volume. Love, love, LOVE this series!

The current story arc gets wrapped up as Mash’s secret is brought into the light, some cream puffs are wasted in a shocking fashion, and another string of bad guys gets added into the mix.

This will be my last review of Mashle as I am definitely suffering from Mash Burneout at this stage of the series. It’s not been much of a secret that this story had exactly one joke and it’s not really doing much for me any more.

There are some good parts, definitely. The action is quite strong and there is a stellar two-page spread in this one. Despite the rather simple art, or, in fact, because of it, the series has always been good at delivering on that front.

The themes of the story are definitely on display here, about how society can, yes, be completely wrong to dunk on the underprivileged for the simple reason of how they were born. It’s certainly a message that resonates no less these days than it ever did.

Some of the jokes land. When they go back into wild Harry Potter parody (how’s that message about discriminating against people for how they were born holding up?), the story heads to the shopping district and I will not spoil the dart game they play, but it is the kind of insanity I wish the story had more of and I had a good howl at it.

The ‘how did we get here’ for Mash’s trial is a great gag too, as well as the weirdest foe yet and the most inappropriate (and hysterical) crown of thorns joke I’ve ever seen. If you have been in love with this series to this point, I doubt you will be disappointed.

For me, I was really just kind of bored waiting for the next joke. The sameness of the battle scenes, no doubt a plus to your average shonen reader, is not for me. This has never been my genre, I freely admit that, and diminishing returns just have me at the point where I’d rather skip this for something else.

3 stars - it’s not just you, it’s me; in fact, it’s both of us, Mashle. I will watch your anime, if they make one, and probably enjoy it, but I think we’ve had about as much fun together as we ever will.

Divine visionaries, trials, Mash is in trouble but will get out of it I loved how they gave him a chance, fights, visit to home (oh Lemon), visit to a shopping street that seemed strangely familiar and I just was so happy for Mash as he deserves friends. I am loving this one and I am also happy that the whole he cannot do magic is out of the bag now I was already hoping that it wouldn't take the whole series. I am curious how Mash will do.

This series is truly underrated. I know the anime blew up a bit because of the opening, but I wish the manga would get more attention. Each volume I read, I want to read more!! Its so silly and funny. The fights, action and small moments where it does get a bit serious, are gripping and so very entertaining!

But it worked about in the end. I love the friendship they have.

I feel like this series has finally found it's own groove. Like it's still absolutely just a harry potter riff with one punch man/mob psycho sensibilities, but after 5 volumes it seems to have settled into something a little more unique. It's narrative and gags have both moved toward something more original, which is nice.

I was a little unsure about this volume at first while I was reading it, but I ended up really enjoying it! In my last review I talked about how I felt a bit upset that the first arc was ending so quickly, but it ended up being wrapped up quite nicely in this one and I liked where things ended. I do enjoy Abel as a character, and I think his posse is quite the cast of characters so I hope it isn't the last we'll ever see of them. Him and Abyss (or "Mask Guy" as Mash affectionately calls him) are both nice characters, and I like that they sort of befriended Mash and his gang and they all had a creampuff party in the end. The beginning few chapters felt a bit all over the place, but once it moved on and Cell War left I really liked the direction it went in and had a lot of fun. It doesn't surpass the level of fun I had with the first volume, but it was pretty close.

In my last review I had talked about how I missed some of the slice of life moments we had gotten at the beginning, but this volume did an extremely good job balancing those two aspects of the story together, and I really liked it. We got Mash and his friends feasting, hanging out, and partying while also getting a sizeable chunk of the story properly introducing Cell War and Innocent Zero and the rest of the Divine Visionaries. All of them have insane aura, and I personally think Orter Madl is the coolest looking one of them all, maybe besides Rayne who I am very intruiged about. I'm very interested in learning more about them as a group and about their specific titles and administrations. I don't have a whole lot to say about them specifically as this volume serves to merely introduce them, but between the seven Divine Visionaries, Innocent Zero, and even Margarette at the end, there's a lot of powerful and important characters that we'll no doubt learn more about.

And as I mentioned about the lighthearted scenes, they were easily my favorite. It's nice to get so see Mash and his friends be able to hang out for once after all the fighting they've gone through, and it was particularly sweet how he visitied his father and his father got all emotional over having friends :). It was so sweet, and it really warmed my heart. In general, I thought that the humor and creativity in this volume in particular was very well done. I like how the humor is split between everyone's "shticks" and outside jokes. Of course you have the physical comedy from Mash and his fighting, but you also had a bunch of other dumb stuff that made me laugh like everyone in the friend group showing up to their outing in their weird ass outfits (THE SUIT OF ARMOR?!), and the ongoing joke that always gets me is "sister complex" Lance and his obsession with his sister. Yeah sure, give the old man merchandise with your little sister on it, why not?

Also I'm obsessed with the way owls are drawn in this series. It's like how the characters are sometimes randomly drawn as stickfigures. It's absolutely the highest form of art humanity has ever seen.

In terms of creativity there are two aspects where I think it shines through not just in this volume but in the series as a whole: the character designs and the fighting, especially in regards to Mash. Komoto is very skilled at his character designs, and even with the most minor of characters I really like how he works to give everyone such distinct personalities, skillsets, and visuals. I also think it's really cool to see how different everyone's marks are. I know in the first book it was mentioned that everyone's markings are unique, but I still get surprised when I see ones that are considerablt different than most, such as Margarette and his side kicks having music-themed markings.

In one of my earlier reviews I had commented on how much creativity, especially in regard to how Mash fights, is needed to keep things fresh. I know not every single person is going to have the attention span to keep a series that mostly revolves around the same thing interesting the whole time, but I am impressed with how it's been handles thus for. Even now I'm still surprised with some of the stuff that Komoto pulls out to keep things interested, such as Mash . Huh, I never thought something like that would be pulled out, but I'm pleasently surprised. I have no doubt that Komoto has all sorts of things up his sleeve, and I can't wait to see what he has planned next. That being said, a classic kick in the face from Mash also works wonders when used right.

This was another great addition to this really fun series, and I can't wait to read more of it. I'm having so much fun with this, and I think not only will I probably finish the series but I'm thinking of checking out the manga when this is all over. It's a really great series that balances and interesting plot and worldbuilding with the humor, and it's the kind of series that has something for everything. I also remember at odd points that this series is also a parody, and I like when I see something that reminds me of its roots, like when Cell War's head hurts when Mash comes close. Or even better like this random panel that gave me a good laugh:

Hehe. Book funny.

The previous arc comes to a close with one last big fight against someone we can expect to be a more prolonged villain (or villain organization) in the series. Lots of great action sequences, with Hajime Komoto being great at pacing and drawing the linework for the big impact scenes of Mash's attacks, before we start the next phase of the series with an introduction to a larger supporting cast of possible protagonists/antagonists and how Mash's lack of magic plays into the whole of the setting.

Some of the bigger lore building caught me off guard - I thought we would either wait a long time to see it develop, or if the series was going in this direction it would have dropped hints much earlier on in the story - but it does mean that Mashle is starting to develop it's own unique identity. The first few volumes I have described as a One-Punch Man knock-off that parodies Harry Potter instead of superhero/battle stories. As it goes on it's started to feel more like Jujutsu Kaisen with more gags than horror (and a lot less wordy and convoluted, which is good) and maybe some elements of D.Gray-Man. Heck, I could see this filling a certain void while Blue Exorcist is on hiatus. The series still has a long way to go, and I don't know how they will continue to build tension and escalate challenges, but I believe the series is starting to hit its stride.

In Volume 5, our boy Mash Burnedead is threatened with expulsion and even worse, loss of cream puffs. But of course, he is the main character, and what he lacks in brains, he makes up for with heart. Did you know the heart is a muscle? Because Mash sure has muscles. The tongue is a muscle and he flexes it with a balloon animal-type creation. Anyway. I don't know why anyone would start with this volume, but if they do, I think this book does a great job at showing how Mash has grown as a character since our story started. I look forward to what's next, since plot-wise they do hint at escalating Big Bad activity. (I received a free eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.)
