Ken & Bobby

Rate this book
True love and happy endings only happen in fairy tales... right?

Bobby Vanderpool is a young millionaire, a popular model, and a closeted gay heir to his conservative family's legacy. He has everything he could possibly want except for a storybook romance and the freedom to be his true queer self.

Meanwhile, Ken Walker, a sexy surfer and musician, fears his family, friends, and church will reject him if they learn he's not entirely straight, so he struggles to repress his sexuality while trying to find himself.

But after the steamy surf stud's chance encounter with a certain bubbly blond beau, nothing can stand in the way of their magical love-at-first-sight romance--nothing but family conflicts, treacherous frenemies, and a vexing hex, that is.

If the star-crossed lovers are ever to be together, Ken must overcome his fears and learn to accept himself, and Bobby must survive his death drop from grace and learn how to stand on his own two feet.

Will Ken & Bobby lose themselves to society's pressures and expectations? Or will they find a way to live their truth and write a fairy tale ending together? Only one sassy narrator can spill this tea!

When I first started reading this book, I thought it would be an emotional damaging story that all came together at the end with a happily ever after. This may have been because I have been reading some emotional rollercoasters recently, so I was pleasantly surprised to find Ken & Bobby is more of a light hearted romcom with lots of funny little moments.

Bobby is a happy-go-lucky man who feels like he needs to hide who he is for his father’s sake. He rolls with the punches and tries to make the best of a bad situation. He’s eternally optimistic which sometimes made his character feel like it lacked a sort of depth, but maybe that’s because I don’t know many people who could have put up with what he did and come out the other side smiling. Also, how could anyone NOT know he’s a friend of Dorothy? Yes he tries to hide it for his father’s sake, but with everything he’s involved in?! I guess his father lives by the motto “ignorance is bliss”

Ken on the other hand is more cautious when it comes to his sexuality. He actively hides it from his family and friends, and puts up a pretty good charade. When he first meets Bobby sparks fly and he stays on Ken’s mind. Songs are written and insecurities are realised.

Some of the side characters are based on stereotypically archetypes of what people may perceive the LGBTQIA population to be, but that isn’t a terrible thing. They make for some interesting moments.

Overall I think this was a great story to read and it came at a good time for me. I am looking forward to more books written by JD. Wilde.

This is a beautiful story of two men trying to find themselves in spite of their own fears and the expectations of society.
The dialogue in this book is snappy and gay and very fun!
I love how many different emotional perspectives are portrayed for both those struggling to find their sexuality and their friends and family relating to them throughout their struggles.
I think the story would have left a weightier impression if the author had done more to show rather than tell what the characters are thinking and feeling.

I just finish this delightful and at moments tender read. A book with equally delightful cast of characters and funny takes on modern day gay faux pas. The quick wit and pop culture references come as fast as gays to a Super Bowl Halftime show. This author has unique voice and I’m here for it all. Treat yourself to a fun, fast paced, romcom that will have turning pages well past bedtime to see how it all ends.

It was a really fun book! A campy and quirky little coming of age romcom with snappy dialogue and witty quips, and an authentic, relatable story. It was very different from other novels I've read, but I feel like it's opened me up to exploring more genres now.

A modern twist on a queer, coming of age love story. Great character development, plot twists and realizations. The author gives authenticity to lives that live outside of stereotypes and tropes.
