Rate this book

This book left me with mixed feelings. I really liked how it began and enjoyed reading it, but a lot of things things bothered me.

I confess that I found it incredibly strange that Gaston spent a large part of the history as a gentleman, an honest and kind man. I was very curious about how the author would transform this boy into a self-centered and predatory man, perhaps through the influence and coexistence with the prince, abandoning his initial values. But then we were approaching the events of the film, and he remained a good person... and then he forgot everything as part of Circe's curse. Honestly, I thought it was incredibly lazy to solve this with a make-forget spell.

This initial kindness from Gaston was well tied up with the ending, when he uses his resentment of the prince's evil to attack the Beast and free Belle from the horrible man he had met before. HOWEVER, this is very inconsistent with the original character. Not that it had to be. Serena has taken other liberties before, for example with Queen Grimhilde, which worked well. But Gaston was interesting precisely because he toes the line of "who is the man and who is the monster" and is a very real villain, a man who preys on a woman and is acclaimed by ignorant people for being violent, narcissistic, and authoritarian.

Despite this, this is the kind of book I want from Serena Valentino. A complex story of character development, with its problems, yes, but without being just an excuse to write the Odd Sisters's story.

I gave it 4 stars, but in practice it would be a 3.5.
