Kenneth W. Cain first got the itch for storytelling during his formative years in the suburbs of Chicago, where he got to listen to his grandfather spin tales by the glow of a barrel fire. But it was a reading of Baba Yaga that grew his desire for dark fiction. Shows like The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and One Step Beyond furthered that sense of wonder for the unknown, and he’s been writing ever since.
Cain is the author of The Saga of I trilogy, United States of the Dead, the short story collections These Old Tales and Fresh Cut Tales, and the forthcoming Embers: A Collection of Dark Fiction. Writing, reading, fine art, graphic design, and Cardinals baseball are but a few of his passions. Cain now resides in Chester County, Pennsylvania with his wife and two children.
This anthology of short stories boasts an ensemble of some of the finest voices in horror, akin to a neverending stream of clowns tumbling from a tiny car the scares just keep coming in an assortment of uncanny and unsettling tales all centered around our greasepaint friends. I've kept my reviews brief to avoid spoiling anything, but rest assured that these stories are diverse and thoroughly enjoyable, and you might be surprised to find that the clowns are not always the monsters.
The Hollow Ones Weep Greasepaint - Piper challenges the norm in this deeply moving story about what it means to be human and the significance of embracing our emotions.
Quit Clowning Around - Where DID all the clowns go? This was quite ambiguous and left just enough to the imagination to be completely and utterly CREEPED TF out, is it one man's paranoia or are we all just trudging through the monotony of life unaware of the dangers lurking or the masks people wear..
Mr Tasty Crinkle - A demonic entity responsible for the marketing of kids cereal? I enjoyed the format of an internet forum, it adds a layer of authenticity, this was pretty terrifying and it felt like it could be something off a true crime show.
Dots the Magic Clown - This was mayhem, absolutley hysterical and I couldn't stop laughing, is that bad? Theres lots of references to fellow authors which I thought was super fun. This follows an author as he struggles to come up with new and exciting ways to promote his book, he goes ahead with his rather unusual idea - I mean, if you're going to a Cesare signing and he starts doing magic tricks, maybe..leave? things go very VERY wrong, and then it goes from bad to worse and it's utter carnage, I did laugh out loud throughout this, I enjoy Adams humour it's dry and relatable, there was some commentary on the struggles and self doubt authors face that I felt were derivative of the truth but hopefully Adam is ok, I mean, are you buddy? This really showcases how bloody funny Adam is.
The Fears of a Clown - A depressed clown who is afraid of clowns..this was TENSE and I kept waiting for the horror to come, the ending is left ambiguous but its also.. not at the same time..
Pop - This plays on urban legends and meshes it with childhood trauma, honestly this was super unsettling and emotional, theres something serious simmering beneath the surface, I couldn't quite put my finger on it but it felt a little like abuse/trauma, let me know what you think!
The Circus Inside You - Grim reaper..but it's a clown..yeah no thanks. Road rage and clowns are not a good mix. SCARY.
Giggles in the Glitch - A true crime/found footage/childhood killer clown horror, need I say more? No, read it.
The Drolls - Jim is a bit of a dick, but I guess he had his reasons, but still. This felt like a full length novel in the best way possible, nuanced characters and you get a good scope of the town and relationships between the characters in a short amount of space. Janz is great at humour and horror and this was brimming with both, totally absurd but you laugh along in the madness, even though it's not actually that funny it's pretty horrifying..
Scribble Face - Revenge is best served with greaspaint and a big BIG smile. I really disliked one character in particular and I think that was entirely the point.
Fear of Boys - I don't know what I read but I liked it, I think, what, WHAT.
Cypress Circus - Story about childhood trauma and how one experience can tarnish your perception forever, super creepy and unexpected, I actually gasped when all was revealed.
The Funhouse - VAMPIRIC STRIPPER CLOWNS.
A Very Special Boy - This felt like a King story, the author manages to establish a great rapport between reader and character, one of my favourites, sad and scary vibes.
of course Aron Beauregard's story is one of the very few 5 star ones for me lol but I also gave 5 stars to the one called "Bobo" and I really enjoyed the majority of the stories, especially in the beginning. I loved how different each story was, as well as how uniquely clowns were incorporated in each one. However, I'll be okay if I never read the word "greasepaint" ever again hah
Fear of Clowns A Horror Anthology: Coulrophobia Stories 🌟🤡🌟🤡🌟🤡🌟🤡🌟🤡 29 amazing authors and 29 Amazing short horror stories, all based on creepy clowns! These stories are super spooky and intense! Some more horrifying than others, but they are all fantastic! I’m a sucker for great clown stories and scares!
A few stand outs for me are:
-Mr. Tasty Crinkle by Craig E.Sawyer -Pop by Jonathan Lees -Giggles in the Glitch by Dex Bryant -Grease Paint and Monkey Brains by Duncan Ralston -No one wants to go to Happy Land by Douglas Ford -The Grim Chameleon Apparatus by Michael A. Reed -Ordinary People by Rachel Harrison -The Last Laugh by Graham Masterton & Karolina Mogielska
Thank you to Kevin Kangas, for an audio copy of this fantastic book of clown horrors! The narrator’s did a very good job also! This book is out now, just in time for spooky October! 🤡
I didn't realize I needed a FEAR OF CLOWNS anthology, but I absolutely did and so do YOU. The 29 tales cavorting within this book will gleefully terrify, amuse, and unnerve, while the vivid variety will keep a smile plastered on your face. This clown compendium will creep you out! I genuinely enjoyed every story except for one (which has a CW/TW so you can skip it. I didn't and wish I had. Ymmv.)
Navíc skvělé zjištění - očividně nejsem sama, kdo v útlém věku viděl TO z 1990 a poznamenalo ho to :)) Klaunagedon rozhodně stojí za přečtení.
How do I fear thee? Let me count the ways. 29 Twenty-nine ways to fear a clown. And 29 completely different ways.
And, we're not just talking seeing a creepy circus clown and being scared or fearing Pennywise in a book, movie, or nightmare.
These clowns are in us, around us, part of us. Whether it be through a sweet cotton candy infection or within our choice to choose laughter, tears, or even rage. They're our urban legends and childhood fears. They are the darkest sides of ourselves, hidden away, just waiting to show our true face. They are how time twists our faded memories and how we choose to create new ones. Sometimes, it's merely a name for our terror when nothing else fits.
Whatever forms our fear of clowns, it's in this anthology. And it's going to take over your thoughts and your nightmares.

🤡Thank you to Kevin Kangas for an advanced copy of this anthology in exchange for an honest review.🎈
Wendy's mother always told her not to cry for a clown or she would become one. Was she right? What are clowns afraid of? After a car crash with a clown cara terminally ill man has a choice to make. A business man driving through a isolated town is tailgated by a clown car. A woman see her sons ghost and his clown toys move. What secrets does he know? These and other horrifying tales. Unique tales of clowns of all types.
WTH did I just read….I’m a huge sucker for clown horror (Jon Athan -looking at you 😅) and this HIT! 29 stories to satisfy your clown craving! I literally enjoyed them all -loved that no two were alike in any way! Stand outs had to be: Quit Clowning Around - a demented take on viewing clowns Mr Tasty Crinkle -an 80’s urban legend The Drolls -an asshole parent actually has a valid reason The Funhouse -a funeral turned vampiric stripper party Ordinary People-a sad tale of a teenage girl Loved loved loved this so much! Will definitely be rereading in October to gear up for Halloween!
I guess I am one of those few people that isn’t afraid of clowns, or feels uncomfortable around them, or has any other feelings about them. I feel indifferent about them. Always have. I still wanted to read this Anthology because A) I love Anthologies and B) a lot of my favorite indie authors wrote stories for this collection.
Some really great stories are presented in this Anthology, and some I didn’t really care for. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this Book, especially if clowns make you feel uneasy or if you are terrified of them, then this is a perfect story collection for you.
29 short horror stories that all deal with clowns in some way, and 29 out for 29 times it did not go the way I was expecting. Im going to talk about some of my favorites.
The very first story by Hailey Piper called "The Hollow Ones Weep Greasepaint" sets the tone for the entire collection. Set in a world where clowns stand in place and don't do anything but appear sad. The general populace let's out their anger on them hurling literal and verbal garbage at them, but beware if you start to sympathize with them... should you shed a tear at their plight, you will become one too....
"Mr. Tasty Crinkle" by Craig E. Sawyer is told completely through Reddit posts. As a frequent Reddit lurker, I found this one to be just as creepy as the real life rabbit holes I've run down in my scrolling. A cereal mascot clown has become an urban legend that piques the curiosity of some posters who try to get the bottom of a tragic ending to the cereal brand which culminated in a horrifying final basement broadcast involving kids...
"Dots the Magic Clown" by Adam Cesar is probably my favorite story here. I was completely caught off guard as a writer tries to become successful. He's slightly delusional but means well as he prepares for a book signing. Maybe dressing as a clown like the ones in his stories could help set him over the edge to stardom. He could taste his big break coming and everything goes fataly wrong. I think this resonated with me because I also dream about making it as a writer. I felt so bad for this guy.
"The Fears of a Clown" by Bev Vincent probably has the best writing. It focuses on a clown speaking to his therapist. He's on the verge of going postal and it shows.
"Cypress Circus" by Red Lagoe reads like a modern noir and I loved the gritty tone and the twisted reveal at the end.
"The Funhouse" by V. Castro injects a jolt of eroticism here, and the way an urn of a brother's ashes is used is wild.
"Bobo" by Hunter Shea and "A Very Special Boy" by Daniel Willcocks are a one-two punch involving child death. Both magnificently told and I felt they take the cake for being the scariest, particularly the one by Willcocks destoried me.
I can't recommend this collection enough. Coming in at around 330 pages of story, there is so much clown-bang for your buck.
I'm going to start off by saying It by Stephen King is probably my favorite book of all time. I remember being in high school and reading it for the first time and falling in love with the characters, the small town, and the story. When I saw that there was a Fear of Clowns anthology, and that there were some authors I know listed in it, I jumped at the chance to read it.
There were a few misses. There were some stories that I really didn't care for. But there were also some stories that I absolutely loved! Graham Masterton's The Last Laugh honestly freaked me out a little bit.
You also have the likes of Duncan Ralston and Aron Beauregard who wrote just amazing stories. But I think my favorite was Adam Cesare's story about an author trying to stay relevant.
Overall this was a fun read, and Jason Vu preformed more than read this, and that drew me in!
Fear of Clowns A Horror Anthology: Coulrophobia Stories edited by Kenneth W. Cain is a spine-chilling compilation of some of the most terrifying clown stories I’ve ever encountered.
You may think you know clown horror… but you have no idea how wild the horrors can get until you dive into this collection. If you weren’t afraid of clowns before… you will be after reading this! Good luck! 🙂
My favorites from this collection include: Mr. Tasty Crinkle by Craig E. Sawyer The Fears Of A Clown by Bev Vincent Giggles In The Glitch by Dex Bryant A Ticket To The Funhouse by Gwendolyn Kiste The Gift by Lisa Kröger
In audiobook format I’d give this a 3.7 because the Narrator Jason Vu gave a performance, rather than just a reading. I just love it when a narrator invests himself or herself enough to get into character. And to be honest it was Cassandra Arnold’s narration of the first story ( The audio preview) that made me want to take a chance on this anthology. And it was the mother’s harshness towards her daughter in that first story that hooked me. I like my horror with gore and sharp edges, and there were stories in here right up my alley. And this is one anthology I feel I can come back to again.
This is by far one of the creepiest books I read leading up to Halloween! I strongly advise reading this if you do have a fear of clowns. As this will amplify this book tenfold. Each author added their own creepy clown to this wonderfully written book.
I may be the odd one out here but I was not thrilled with this anthology. One positive was that there was a vast amount of renown authors from the horror genre to choose from. It seems that Kevin Kangas recognized that with anthologies there will always be a discrepancy in quality. The stories that I was not enamoured with may be adored by other readers. That being said… if I try to balance out the whole of the anthology, I felt there were more average stories than not. Here is my humble opinion rated from low to high:
1. All Smiles Under the Big Top by Bitter Karella 2/5
I don’t know what to say about this one. It was an interesting read but while I was getting into it, it just ended. I have absolutely no reason why…..
2. The Penthouse Suite at the Plague Pit Hotel by A.C. Wise 2/5
Went right me.. totally did not get the story at all.
3. The Funhouse by V. Castro 3/5
Not too keen on this one. Just kinda disgusting and nothing more
4. Bobo by Hunter Shea 3/5
I expected to like this one much more but it was fine.
5. The Hollow Ones Weep Greasepaint by Hailey Piper. 3/5
Not a real fan of Piper’s writing. I found this short story depressing and not an enjoyable read. I question it being chosen as the first story for this anthology. However, I bumped my rating up a bit because the first part of the story stayed with me after the story was over.
6. Quit Clowning Around by Clay McLeod Chapman. 3/5
This reminded me of the movie called SMILE. Very similar feel. The ending wrapped it up nicely but overall just meh.
7. Dots the Magic Clown by Adam Cesare 3/5
I adore this author. Although not his best work, this was something. More of a satirical piece that mentions his “Clowns in a Cornfield” trilogy which was actually marvellous! This actually reads more like a Jeff Strand piece than Adam Cesare.
8. The Fears of a Clown by Bev Vincent 3/5
Clever and funny story of a clown divulging their fears to a psychiatrist. Just not very memorable.
9. Serial Clown by Rutger Middelburg 3/5
Interesting idea for a story. However, it was a bit forgettable.
9. Fear of Boys by Carissa Ann Lynch 3/5
Very odd! Not sure how I feel about this one.
10. Anymore is a long Time by Thomas Tessier 3.5/5
I really liked the part about Martin holing up at the casino… very intriguing read. However, what actually happened and the symbolism of Lori dressing up like a schoolgirl clown is a mystery to me.
11. Mr. Tasty Crinkle by Craig E. Sawyer 4/5
Great name for a story. Love the format and story was great fun although a bit cheesy.
12. A Ticket to the Funhouse by Gwendolyn Kiste 4/5
Really enjoyed this story until the end. Some great symbolism and the plot flowed. Wanted to know more about what happened when she was 17. It was left too vague.
13. Pop by Jonathan Lees 4/5
Creepy story that was a bit hard to follow but captured the evil that lives all around us.
14. A Very Special Boy by Daniel Willcocks 4/5
Interesting story that used part of the symbolism of Pennywise. The story itself was unique but some of the imagery was little vague or confusing for the reader because it relies on the reader knowing what “floating” represents. However, he also mentions “sinking” with no context.
15. Cypress Circus by Red Lagoe 4/5
Very symbolic story about family and mental health.
16. Clown Heads by Em Starr 4/5
Creepy little story. Well written although some themes repeated while others were unexplained like Doreen’s role.
17. Jollification by Mel Reynes 4/5
Unique idea for a story. Linked more with a carnival than clowns, yet close enough to be on theme. Not familiar with this author, but great job invoking creepiness, isolation, horror, and a certain degree of campiness. It made me think of Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
18. Grease Paint and Monkey Brains by Duncan Ralston 4/5
The ending was very good but the rest was somewhat mediocre. Unfortunate because I really like Duncan’s writing. This was a unique idea for a story though.
19. The Old College by Aron Beauregard 4/5
Crazy ass story that was brutal yet memorable. The ending didn’t quite fit though.
20. The Last Laugh by Graham Masterton & Karolina Mogielska 4/5
Not bad. A long short story about alien clowns or madness.
21. Giggles in the Glitch by Dex Bryant 4.5/5
This was an excellent tale . Very creepy and weird. It would have been even better if the “event” hadn’t been so obscure.
21. No One Wants To Go to Happy Land by Douglas Ford 4.5/5
I enjoyed this story although it took kind of a weird direction. The themes and details stuck with me though probably more than any other story. Very similar idea to cut scenes in “Nope”
22. The Circus Inside You by Tim Waggoner 5/5
Very clever story about life and death. The use of metaphors and symbols made the tale more meaningful yet it was not perplexing.
23. The Drolls by Jonathan Janz 5/5
Excellent story! Well written with a story morale that worked within the plot. The main character got what was coming to him which made the story less horrifying and more self-righteous.
24. Scribble Face by S.B. Caves 5/5
Excellent short story. Great intro to the primal fear every mother has concerning her children. This had all the components of a creepy urban legend.
25. The Gift by Lisa Kröger 5/5
Loved this one. Although not super creative, it was suspenseful and tense.
26. The Grim Chameleon Apparatus by Michael A. Reed 5/5
Great title! Great story that takes the boogeyman idea and mixes in a fear of clowns and Voila… “look ma, no hands”.
27. Ordinary People by Rachel Harrison 5/5
Excellent story! Vivid images. Relatable story about the difference between the role of a clown and ordinary people. Yet, clowns scare us more.
When I found out about this Anthology, I was so determined to get an ARC. When I got the email from Kevin stating that my paperback copy was on its way to me, I was beyond ELATED! Also, what an honor! This lineup is absolutely INSANE. I am so grateful for this opportunity to review this incredible group of authors and this is a HUGE pivotal moment for me as a reviewer as well.
This Anthology is also the biggest Anthology I’ve conquered thus far with a whopping 29 short stories and I couldn’t leave a single one out. That isn’t how I roll. So let’s dive in shall we?
Fear of Clowns A Horror Anthology: Coulrophobia Stories
•The Hollow Ones Weep Greasepaint by Hailey Piper Wendy’s plagued by her memories as a child seeing her first clown and how it affected her and her mother’s relationship over the years. Wendy has lived a very sad life as she’s grown older. Well damn, this one put me in the feels!!
A great start!
•Quit Clowning Around by Clay McLeod Chapman Humans are the biggest clowns of all. Simple as that.
•Mr. Tasty Crinkle by Craig E. Sawyer This might be my fave of the collection! In this story it’s set up to read like a Reddit Forum. They’re talking about a famous cereal known as Mr. Tasty Crinkle that was popular in the late 70’s early 80’s. In this forum they go on to discuss some of the prizes inside and one them had been rumored to be cursed. I don’t want to divulge too much but I really enjoyed this one!
•Dots the Magic Clown by Adam Cesare An author has a book signing and discovers his dad’s old clown magician set/costume and decides to perform a show for his signing. Things take a very unexpected turn.
Loved this one!!
•Clown Heads by Em Starr This was a fun and bloody carnival story of a third generation show.
•The Fears of a Clown by Bev Vincent So many people are afraid of clowns but does anyone ask what fears clowns have?
•Jollification by Mel Reynes In this story a bodies decomposition is abnormal and has peaked investigators curiosity.
•The Circus Inside You by Tim Waggoner A man is involved in a car accident that transports him back to his past when he was a kid in a car accident with his family. This one had me thinking. I love these types of stories.
•Pop by Jonathan Lees I’m sensing a reoccurring theme in most of these stories. A lot of these emotions are stemming from these characters inner child. This one especially.
•Giggles In the Glitch by Dex Bryant This was HORRIFYING. Alex has carried a secret for many years. She was wrongly accused but many people didn’t believe she was capable as a little girl. Daffy Dafodil left an everlasting impression upon her.
•The Drolls by Jonathan Janz A father’s past takes control of him with his kids at a circus. This one was very unsettling and eerie.
•Scribble Face by S.B. Caves Hands down the CREEPIEST story yet. A woman’s past comes back to haunt her when her young son mentions a familiar stranger he saw at his school.
•Grease Paint and Monkey Brains by Duncan Ralston Well this was just one big mindfuck. 🤯
•Serial Clown by Rutger Middelburg There’s a serial killer on the loose that dresses up like a clown. Do they have the right guy?
•No One Wants to Go to Happy Land by Douglas Ford A woman has been haunted by her childhood experience with “Peaches” the clown from a well known show. Her parents never talked about it and acted as if it never happened, assuming to protect her. She revisits this day in her head and takes it another step.
•Fear of Boys by Carisa Ann Lynch Well damn this was one hell of a plot twist!
•A Ticket to the Funhouse by Gwendolyn Kiste Do you believe in Tarot cards/readings??
•Cypress Circus by Red Lagoe Guilt is the worst death of all…
•All Smiles Under the Big Top by Bitter Karella Well damn. This gives a whole new meaning to “Bad Mom.”
•The Penthouse Suite at The Plague Pit Hotel by A.C. Wise Haunted building and clowns? Count me in…
•The Gift by Lisa Kroger Something as scary as clowns? Dolls. But what about a clown doll?
•Anymore Is a Long Time by Thomas Tessier One hell of a twisted love story.
•The Grim Chameleon Apparatus Michael A. Reed Well this is one hell of a punishment for a child.
•The Funhouse by V. Castro A whole new meaning to the word “fun.”
•Bobo by Hunter Shea Everyone handles grief differently but turns out daddy has been keeping a secret from mommy…
•A Very Special Boy by Daniel Willcocks Well this was TERRIFYING
•Ordinary People by Rachel Harrison A couple buys a house where a horrific murder occurred. Strange things begin to happen once they move in. I’m a sucker for a good haunted house story and this one absolutely delivered.
•The Old College by Aron Beauregard Damn this one was DARK as hell but it wouldn’t be an Aron Beauregard story if it was all rainbows and sunshine now would it?
Orson has decided he wants to go off to clown college and his dad is PISSED. He wants him to work for the family company but finally accepts his sons decision. However, once Orson arrives at this Clown College things take a very unexpected and sinister turn. The ending was absolutely perfect. SAD but perfect.
•The Last Laugh by Graham Masterton and Karolina Mogielska This is a story that will make you think. This is a story that will leave you feeling extremely unsettled and I LOVED it.
I really can't think of a single story that didn't spook me out, at least a little. I liked the.one about the house haunted by a bullied to death teenage, the grieving mother's meeting her "child", who tells the truth of his death. The Clown Conversion Institute was one of the most horror packed story I've read. 10/10 highly recommend.
Are Some Real Clowns as Evil as the Ones in this Anthology?
I was aware that some people mainly children were afraid of Clowns but until I read this book, I didn’t know that it was as widespread as it is and there there is a Physiological term for the Fear of Clowns. I greatly enjoyed this anthology, “Fear of Clowns a Horror Anthology”.
Not my usual cup of tea, but it is very good at what it is. I read most of it outside on Halloween while I waited for trick-or-treaters, and it was perfect. I liked some stories better than others of course but for an anthology the quality was consistently high.
It's hard to rate anthologies. I loved some stories, liked some stories and wasn't a fan of others. As is the way of anthologies. Something for everyone! Hailey Piper's story was my very favorite. If you like creepy clowns...this antho has them!
There were some amazing stories here - Piper, Cesare, Reed, and Sawyer. A few fell so flat that I stopped reading it for a while. All in all, I enjoyed the read, and I'm glad I read it over a longer period of time.
