We Catch Those Fallen

Rate this book
Getting to the earth's surface just became a life or death necessity, but to get there, Brinya must make an impossible decision.
For eleven months, I've known about the Technocracy's the climoflyers we call home are designed to self-destruct, but Earth still hasn't recovered from the climate disaster that drove the Originals to live in space.
Operating covertly, I aid the Defiants in preparing to escape while unravelling the mystery of our exploitation as glitchers, all while posing as a Technocracy apprentice geneticist-an act of treason that could cost me my life.
Now my impending union with Caleb beckons, overshadowed by his unseen darkness. There's something wrong with him. Something no one else has seen. My once gentle confidant has turned cold, harsh, and angry; I no longer recognize my best friend. Meanwhile, I'm developing new glitches that could see me lose it all.
I can't do everything. I can't fix myself, cure Caleb, liberate my friends, and fight against the Technocracy, nor can I return to the blissful ignorance of a grey existence. Choices loom, demanding sacrifice.
But which of my friends do I turn my back on?
Kade or Caleb?

A solid sequel that does slightly suffer from second book syndrome. I still enjoyed it, though, and finished the whole thing in two days.

We pick up nearly a year after the events of the first book and things have changed a tiny little bit, but not much because we're in a perfect society full of perfect people. Except we're not, and that's the main focus. The different ways that characters are broken in the eyes of society.

We focus a lot more on Caleb in this book. A lot of little hints from the first book are resolved into a satisfying storyline. Turns out some of my predictions from early in the first book were actually correct. I do love when we're teased with just enough information to figure something out for ourselves.

The downside is that once you do figure it out, it feels repetitive when the author confirms it. They're telling you something you already know. A few times, Brinya did realise something I thought was obvious. This mostly happened when things concerned Kade, which I'll excuse her for. She's a girl in love, she can be a little stupid about it.

We are leaning a little more into the chosen one trope in this book, with other characters singling Brinya out as someone special. I'm not a big fan of chosen ones, but this was handled pretty nicely. Brin doubts herself, wonders who is special and why. She does find out more about herself and everyone around her, that gives this more depth than the usual trope. There's a lot of questions remaining for the next books to answer.

To keep the balance, this brings me to another drawback. The second book syndrome. Most plot points from the first book remain open. We do find out some more things, but there's mostly just more unknowns. Relationships between characters don't develop as much as you'd want them too. A few new incidents occur and are never brought up again. We're waiting for the next book to resolve these.

I enjoyed the exploration of humanity and what it means to be not fully human. We have some action, some emotion, some nice romantic moments. It's not world literature, but it has a good story and keeps you entertained. I would definitely recommend it if you enjoyed the first. I guessed the last word correctly, so don't expect the craziest plot twist of your life, but expect revelations that were properly foreshadowed. Expect friendship, a little loneliness, and even more crazy totalitarianism.

Perfect continuation to a great book 1

Book 2 starts off 11 months after book 1 ended. Brinya is trying to navigate life with her pending nuptuals while also trying to help the Defiants. She is trying to solve the mysteries accredited world involving Caleb, the lab, the technocracy and saving the climofliers while also sneaking off to the Defiants world to help them find a way to escape, stop the night bringers and hold off Sam’s war. With so much on her shoulders it’s no wonder she’s getting worn down but it’s all worth it for the scenes with Kade.

All our fan favorites from book 1 are back (woohoo!) and we see more character development. I liked seeing Ingrid help Brinya again (and found myself wishing she joined the storyline more). Caleb had a chance to redeem himself and I was glad to see some explanation on his storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes in the Defiant world! I love the garden and that it seems to be Brinya & Kade’s place. Their relationship is building and you can feel their feelings growing. Without giving away spoilers, the heartbreaking scene I felt the pain on both sides. I loved the adrenaline rush of their attempted escape and the suspense of the what happened after the tunnel was flooded. Max both teared me up and I rejoiced. It’s exciting to guess what will happen next! Will they figure out a way to keep the Climoflyers going? Will they stop nightbringers from becoming reality? Who is the president (I find myself looking at certain characters and wondering if it’s them)? What is the deal with Dr Chandler and is she trustworthy? What exactly is Brinya and will she avoid being used as a weapon? In a world run this way, can there be a happy ending? I can’t wait to read the final book and finally have all the answers!

In “We Catch Those Fallen,” Brinya finds herself torn between two worlds, uncertain of which path to follow. Persuaded by Kade that she is the lifeline for the Defiants, Brinya’s double life is fraught with peril. She must navigate a treacherous political landscape, make difficult choices about whom to trust, and face the moral dilemmas of her dual existence. The suspense is driven by the constant threat of discovery and the high stakes of her mission.

Since her accreditation, Brinya’s best friend Caleb has changed, becoming increasingly cold and harsh, which creates tension and emotional distance between them. Meanwhile, her other best friend, Addie, is skeptical of Brinya’s actions and prefers to stay out of the conflict. Despite this, their relationship is marked by loyalty and trust as they struggle to navigate their harsh reality while maintaining their bond. Brinya is determined to uncover the reasons behind Caleb’s transformation.

The struggle for freedom is a central theme, as Brinya and the Defiants fight against the Technocracy’s control. This battle is not only physical, but also ideological, as they strive to envision and create a world where people can live freely and sustainably.

Filled with suspense, difficult choices, and the struggle for freedom, “We Catch Those Fallen” combines rich worldbuilding with well-developed characters. It offers a thought-provoking exploration of themes like freedom, control, and resistance, all set within a vividly imagined dystopian future.

If you enjoy dystopian sci-fi with strong character relationships, this book is a must-read!.

ARC REVIEW

We Catch Those Fallen
Rating: 🌟⭐️⭐️🌟
Clean read

The technocracy is hiding these, more things than Brinya could have imagined. Months have passed since she and Kade learned the Climoflyers are set to self destruct and her impending marriage to Caleb is approaching. But Kade hasn’t told the Defiants, who are focused more than ever on starting a war with the Technocracy. Furthermore, something is very wrong with Caleb. Brinya’s once kind-hearted and lifelong friend, Caleb has turned into a cold, paranoid, and sometimes violent shell of his former self. Is this change self-preservation due to the impending marriage or could the technocracy gotten their hooks into him? Brinya must help figure out what has gone wrong with her oldest friend while uncovering more secrets that may help with the imposing deadline of the climoflyers’ self-destruction.

The first bit of this book was rather slow. I enjoyed it, but still felt like not much was going on. We spent so much time focusing on solving the problem of Caleb and I think it should have been shortened. The second bit, which shifted the focus away from Caleb, got back to the meat of the problems Brinya and company face and was extremely compelling and fast-paced. I absolutely devoured the last 60% of this book. While several decisions that were made, specifically Kade’s refusal to share certain things with the defiants, made almost no sense to me, I suppose they could be chalked up to the stupidity of youth. But not really. Regardless I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend this series.

This time is about the forced marriage and the escalating problems and revelations. And the things the story say about this society is quite disturbing, but that's usually how it goes in totalitarian societies,

I was really surprised upon realizing that each "family" seems to have only one child, it made me wonder how they survive in a closed system. This could be offset by Genoborgs living really long lives, but in that case, instead of diminishing population we'd have increasing population, and that is the kind of thoughts good science fiction introduces.

Or perhaps they are diminishing the population to get more people from the other ships.

The was an issue I had with the book, it is something personal that was triggered by a situation in the story. Not the author fault as it's not the author responsibility to know the triggers of each person.

Anyways, what I should have said above is this, it's a really good story that continues giving a lot more information, piling it upon what we had in the first book while keeping enough questions unanswered.

By the way, I was beginning to hate the ending, but it finally adjusted itself correctly.

"...Don’t go planning to be some truth revealer either.”

Brinya lives on a climoflyer, a ship full of Genoborgs, genetically modified and perfect beings will all kinds of delightful advancements, or so the slogans claim. But what are the details that form the truth of their lives?

Brinya starts this book on a mission, and along the way she makes discoveries that may or may not help her achieve her aims, but they are intriguing, eye-opening, and give this page-turner the feel of a sci-fi miniseries on television, in all the best ways.

The action flows, the jargon and language of the story really works, and by the end of this book an already interesting universe was even more compelling, with new questions arising to be answered, leaving me eager to turn the page and start the next book.

This book pulled me in, played with my emotions, and left me on a cliff. Thank you for the twist at the end... But also this is why I like to wait for a series to be fully written. Now I have to wait to read the next one and I am so invested.

I think some characters still have more going on than we know. I am so glad some characters showed their true colors and I was right about them. This book will make you feel things. Then it'll leave you wanting. Please read it.

An entertaining second book, still really like the sci-fi vibe to the story! Brinya finds herself dealing with quite a lot; Caleb is acting strangely, she’s not sure who she can trust, and there’s mysteries to be solved. Brinya is torn between two sides, but ultimately, she wants to help others. She’s got some good tenacity. Overall, a fun read with some cool world building. Enjoying this series so far!

I really enjoyed the first book so it was a no brainer to read the second so that i could see what happened next in the story. I love the characters and could not wait to see what they did next.

I enjoyed the sequel, however, i did feel that the first part was a little slow as we focused on changing relationships and friendships... the second part of the book was more what i wanted where we got stuck into the storyline again.

I cant wait to read book 3!

Brinya has learnt some disturbing secrets, and she will have to be careful who she tells. She wants to stop it from happening, but what wil the cost be? And can she keep those she cares about safe? I loved this addition to Brinya's story, she luckily has friends and allies to help her in her journey and I look forward to what happens next.

I absolutely loved this book. I read the first in this series last year and loved it. The character's were so well written and I love how Brinya is helping the defiants even though she constantly gets them into dangerous situations, especially Kade. Kade trying to chase her away and Brinya just keeps coming back. I cannot wait to read book 3.

Book 2 gave you a bit more into the story and the lies told to the humans living in space. Brinya has her own secrets as well. It is what you find out about Caleb that made me want to cry. He changes and when Brinya finds out what is happening she tries to help him. This was a good read.
