What a damned good adventure! I picked this up because, let’s admit it, it’s one of the finest covers I’ve ever seen. Or at least it plays to my tastes EXACTLY. And the book didn’t disappoint. Full of so many tentacles and the terror of woman on the brink.

Deorum Abyssi had that perfect combination of queasy and unsettling I’m looking for in body horror. And it dovetails so nicely with the core of the plot: you’re trapped in an underwater sea base with a shark-worshipping body-mod-ing cult with a taste for blood. What will you do?

For the main character Thirty-Four, she wakes up in a lab with no memory, and, little by little, Krause reveals the disturbing details of where she is, who she is, and why she’s there. It’s done so patiently and deftly with the right amount of reveal at just the right moments.

Each encounter, each incident, dragged me farther down and ratcheted up the fear and suspense. Krause does suspense SO well. It was one of those edge-of-your-seat, holding-your-breath stories where you’re nearly as anxious as Thirty-Four must have been. That takes real control and skill.

The only thing that made this less than a five star sure thing was a missed opportunity for more mood and dread. The setting was clear and done nicely, but I wanted to really get more of a feel for the place. If corals are encroaching and flowers are everywhere, I want every sensory detail. That could be a me-problem though.

I felt so much fear and anxiety but a little less dread than I was hoping for. I want my skin to crawl and hold my breath AND feel like a shadow is leering over my shoulder in a story like this. Also maybe a me-problem, but I think it would be such a great way to really stand out in the genre… The genre of shark-worshipping underwater surgery cults? Maybe that pretense stands out enough on its own! K

THAT BEING SAID: it’s a solid, solid 4 stars. I was entertained, grossed out, anxious, surprised, and engaged the entire read. It actually was impossible to put down. What a read!

(and no, I don’t know this author. Literally stumbled on this on IG and fell in love with THAT COVER!)

I had a great time with Deorum Abyssi by Angel Krause. It’s one of those quick reads that still manages to create a really vivid atmosphere, and the whole oceanic cult premise immediately pulled me in. Sharks? Count me in! All of the talk about sharks was just making me giddy because I absolutely love them.

The story has this creeping sense of dread the whole way through, with just enough body horror and mystery to keep you turning pages. the body mods were so cool to read about and they way everything is unfolding, I honestly had no clue what to expect. There are a few twists in here that managed to surprise me.

What really stood out to me, though, is how strong Angel Krause’s writing is. I've been reading her current WIP, and because of it,I really wanted to read something finished. this did not disappoint and only reinforced my opinion that she is a talented writer that more people should know. The prose is sharp and confident, and she knows exactly how to build tension without overexplaining things. The imagery sticks with you, and the pacing is tight in a way that makes the story feel bigger than its page count. She’s clearly a very talented writer, and honestly more people need to be reading her work.

If you’re into cult horror, strange creature features, or anything with an eerie ocean vibe, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I definitely wish that the book had been longer, but I was sold 100% on premise.

Sharks. Cults. Bodymods.

The book has everything I could ever want.
