It took me a few weeks to ultimately decide which BJJ book to buy first. My criteria was this: 1. At least 200 pages 2. Clear comprehensible photos 3. Written in a way simpletons such as myself could understand. 4. An author with real experience and knowledge in BJJ.
Modern Submission Grappling -A No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Manual exceeded all expectations. Despite being raised in Slovenia, Miha clearly has not only mastered Jiu-Jitsu, but he has also mastered English. The writing is excellent. His explanations of moves are clear and concise and easy to visualize. His writing style is witty, clever, and his references to himself are humble and modest. Miha has also done a good job pointing out major mistakes and potential hazards. He keeps jiu-jitsu fun and safe. Obviously, as my instructor taught me, you can't learn jiu-jitsu by yourself. If you think you can buy a book and teach yourself jiu-jitsu - you are a fool. However, Modern Submission Grappling is an excellent supplement along with hours and hours and months and months and years and years of training jiu-jitsu in the gym. As an author, an English teacher, and a bjj student with a blindingly white white belt I wholeheartedly recommend this book for jiu-jitsu practitioners. -Josh Douglas
