Not Home Yet: How to be human in an inhuman world

Rate this book
Life is hard. We all suffer. We have all been hurt and have hurt others. Many of us are tired and, above all, lonely. We often feel like wanderers in a desert. There must be more to life. More joy, more safety, more significance, more friends, more help, more God. But those things are hard to find. We feel like we should be living in a land of abundance, but we actually live in a land of scarcity–a world that doesn’t feel like a home fit for humans.

We are all travelers in this wilderness. Sojourners in a strange land. Or, in the words of the Apostle Peter, “exiles dispersed abroad.” At the same time we are also, “chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient and to be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ.” So we are wanderers but not lost. Exiles, but not without a promised land. Lost children, but not orphans. We are homeless, but not truly without a home. We’re just not home yet.

This book is for every weary heart in search of a home. For every person who longs to find an oasis in this desert and to share it with friends. This book is for every anxious, tired, and lonely person searching for a deep and abiding connection with the one true source of all things, Jesus. And it's for every person who, once that connection is established, wants to create oases for others and help them connect with Jesus more intimately.

Part theory and part practical advice, Brandon and Liv first gently and compassionately help the reader find an oasis with Jesus–the God of compassion and grace–and then offer simple instructions for helping others find the same through the incarnate grace of hospitality.

I started this book and stopped reading because I got distracted. I remember really resonating with parts of the beginning, but when I picked it up again, I didn’t connect with it the way I had before.

About 1/2-2/3 of the way through came the very practical hospitality portion, and it felt like a gold mine! It made me spontaneously invite two friends over to paint!

This book helped me to walk the line of having a little bit of anxiety when I invite people over, but how important it is to do so. It wasn’t dismissive of it, but affirming and encouraging. This book is one that I will read again.

I gave this book to a leader of a dinner church, and I’m excited to see how she “chews” on this information.

Bit of a slower start laying the groundwork for the fantastic second part!
As it developed in the first part, I found myself slowly identifying more with the questions. (People who know me wouldn’t be surprised to find I don’t really struggle with self-esteem issues, QUITE the opposite 😆) Meditating on the personal facets of the incarnation was fantastic.

I’m most excited that my highly allergy probe family will be able to eat THE bread with only a few small tweaks!

This one of a kind book is full of encouragement, guided self-reflection, and practical advice, all while pointing the reader to Jesus and His Grace. The stories and vulnerability the authors share remind the reader that we are not alone on this (at times) lonely journey of life. Highly recommend!
