Detective Kane & Alton #4

When two tourists find a skull while on a trail when hiking, for Kane and Alton it's just the start of something neither of them could have envisioned. We are back in Black Rock Falls, Montana, and a merciless predator is stalking the woods during the peak hunting season. The killer seems to be targeting young couples, who are mainly tourists, who want to spend some time alone in secluded areas.

Detectives Kane and Alton are back along with Wolfe and the rest of the team. They are seeking out a serial killer who targets couples. The body count is rising but will they to catch the predator before they strike again. This is a fast paced, well written, edge of your seat read. There are plenty of twists in this gritty police procedural. I like Kane and Alton and their will they/won't they form a relationship. The main characters are all likeable and they work well together. I would never in a million years have guessed who the predator was. I love a book that keeps you guessing. This book can be read as a standalone but you will be missing out on a good series if you don't read them all from the beginning

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author DK Hood for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Only in Black Rock Falls will you find a Sheriff who is an ex-DEA Agent in witness protection with a new name and a new face, a Deputy who was a sniper and member of the Special Forces Investigation Command and another who is also the ME.

When a hiker finds a human skull in the forest of Black Rock Falls, Detective Jenna Alton and her team investigate ... with surprising results. They find the skull, and numerous scattered bones, as well as the skeleton of what appears to be a man tied to a tree with an arrow between his eys and riddled with bullets.

And those aren't the only bodies they find .....

THE CRYING SEASON can be read as part of the series or easily as a standalone. I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. Not only is it a fascinating story on how the three main characters came together, but their story is woven through an action-packed page-turner. I especially enjoy how the characters relate to each other ... with caring, respect, humor and sometimes a little sarcasm ... but it's the way they go about solving crime in their little town that sets them apart.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Book 4 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series and it shows no signs of letting up. This is a great series with a team of detectives who are not really who they seem in a small town in Montana. Kane and Alton are a great team, working together in this town that sees so much crime and murder.

It is Hiking season in Black Rock Falls. Visitors comes from all over to hike the woods and go hunting. When a human skull is discovered Jenna and her team are called to investigate. There are no missing persons on record making it all the much harder. But then another body is discovered and this becomes a serial killer. They will have to enter the woods themselves to solve this case, but will they both return.... this killer is violent and cunning and very very dangerous.

This is a great series and I have no hesitation of picking up these books. Always a great read. Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read and enjoy. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.

No synopsis for this as there are plenty of them around in other reviews. I've enjoyed this series to date and this was possibly the most gripping book in the series so far. Normally that would make it a winner for me but I feel like I have read this story before with different characters. Apart from seeming a bit derivative it was also littered with lazy tropes that are getting bit old. You know the sort of thing - vicious male psychopath who hates women and hunts them for sport (revelling in their blood, groan), the tough as nails heroine who won't listen to reason and puts herself in grave danger from said psychopath in order to catch him, blah blah. It makes for suspenseful reading but come on, let's be a bit more creative here and have a more believable villain and more complex and innovative plot.

I'm not against stories in which women get murdered by men (let's face it the genre is full of them) but it does get a bit tiresome at times. And I know it happens in real life but the reality is usually a lot more prosaic than what was depicted in these pages. It seems to me that the writer was aiming for maximum shock value and forgot about clever plotting. It was eminently readable, hence three stars, but not at all memorable or clever.

During Hiking season in Black Rock Falls Jenna and her team are called to investigate a human skull in the forest. Soon when another body is discovered Jenna knows she is chasing a serial killer and to beat him she will have to enter and hunt him in his own turf which might prove to be very dangerous.

The Crying Season by D.K. Hood is the fourth book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series and can be easily read as a standalone. This is another action packed thriller with lots of twists & turns will keep you hooked to the end.

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

This had the potential to be a phenomenal thriller but the writing style had it falling just short. The writing felt so stilted and forced, it felt almost like a robot had written the story! And sadly that really affected my enjoyment of what would otherwise have been a great story. The plot was really interesting and had me dying to know what would happen next but I just couldn’t get past how stilted the writing and sentence structure was!

D.K. Hood proves her worth yet again in a piece that keeps the attentive reader on edge. Great storytelling mixes with wonderful development, leaving little to the imagination and a great deal of action on which to feast. When a body turns up in the wooded area around town, it appears that the killer has been keeping things off the radar for quite some time. However, this is anything but usual for Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team, with a killer out there, targeting couples and using tracking software to plot their next strike while stalking prey. Chilling and intriguing in the same breath, Hood dazzles yet again.

When hiking season arrives in Black Rock Falls, Montana, everyone takes notice. There is an upsurge in visitors and the paths are full of people wishing to explore. When a hiker comes across a skull along one of the paths, red flags emerge and Sheriff Jenna Alton is called to the scene. Bringing her second-in-command, Deputy Dave Kane, Alton realises that a brutal killer could be hiding in plain sight.

This shocking discovery is only the beginning, when another body, that of a man, is found tied to a tree and full of bullets. Might these be two lone incidents, or could the killings be connected, proving that there is a targeting killer out there? It seems as though the victims were together and could open the door to a motive.

Working as many leads as the forensics allow, Alton and Kane provide the townsfolk with some reassurance that they will get to the bottom of things, but the truth is much more problematic. When more bodies turn up, it appears that couples are targeted and tracking software is being used to choose victims. It will take great effort and some dedication out in the woods to piece things together, though the killer is getting more brutal with each new act. Alton and Kane are seasoned at all of this, but even they are not ready for what awaits them and the ramifications that flow from it all. Hood provides yet another strong piece that will keep readers flipping pages well into the night.

D.K. Hood keeps the reader front and centre once more with this piece. Providing a strong narrative foundation, the story flows well from there, captivating the attention of the interested reader. Short chapters tease and provide needed momentum to push along and read ‘just a little more’ as there story ramps up in intrigue. This proves to be a great addition to the early part of this series, leaving me wanting more to unwrap additional themes and story arcs.

Character development continues to be a cornerstone in this piece, as both Kane and Alton share tidbits of their pasts. I can only hope that they will keep things moving, as the reader is sure to enjoy learning all there is to know about these two. The strong cast of secondary characters help add depth to the book and keep me wanting more, as the flavours of the subplots keep things from getting too predictable.

Plots emerge and develop with ease in this piece. While there are comments within about how Black Rock Falls could have become so full of murder investigations, there is a slight eagerness for the reader to learn of so many incidents, as well as how Sheriff Alton will navigate through them. A great pacing of the story’s numerous twists keeps the story fresh and lively, while leaving room for some forks in the road throughout the piece. I am eager to see how Black Rock Falls develops as a locale, using key plot points to keep things on edge and sharp for the curious series fan. Moving through this series, I have discovered some great things that keep me coming back for more. Hood has me hooked and keeps providing a strong outlet for additional enjoyment.

Kudos, Madam Hood, for always knowing how to shape the story to keep readers enthused.

The Crying Season is book four in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D. K. Hood. The beautiful scenery in Black Rock Falls, Montana, brings visitors in droves during the hiking season. However, this year, it also brought evil to the area. Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane became involved when a hiker discovered a human skull in one of the isolated trails. At first, they did not know what they were dealing with. However, what they found during their investigation would shock them. The readers of The Crying Season will continue to follow Detectives Kane and Alton to discover what happens.

When reading books in this series, I must remember that you will go on a rollercoaster ride with every page you read. The Crying Season continues the tradition and is a fantastic addition to this excellent series. I love the way D. K. Hood portrays his characters and the way they interact with each other throughout this book. The Crying Season is well-written and researched by D. K. Hood. I like D. K. Hood's description of the settings of The Crying Season, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The Crying Season's readers will learn about Montana's beautiful hiking trails. Also, the readers of The Crying Season will learn about the meaning of the word Hybristophiliac or Bonnie and Clyde Syndrome.

I recommend this book.

The Crying Season by D.K. Hood is the 4th in the Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books):
Sheriff Jenna Alton is the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana. She is new to being Jenna Alton. She has a new name, and a new ID, because her past is still out there. She’s former DEA. Deputy David Kane also has a new name and new ID. Similar reasons. He’s a former Special Forces sharpshooter with exceptional profiling skills. Forensic Scientist Shane Wolf is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.

My Synopsis:
It is hunting season in Black Rock Falls, and the surrounding forest trails and mountainous regions are filled with wildlife, and hunters. But there is one hunter out there that isn’t hunting wildlife. When hikers find a human skull, Jenna thinks it may have been from the local reservation, but that thought is quickly dismissed when another body is found, tied to a tree and shot multiple times.

More bodies turn up, and it looks like the hunter is killing the male, and hunting the female for sport. He may be video-taping his kills.

The only way to catch this guy may be to go undercover. Jenna looks a lot like his preferred prey.

My Opinions:
I am really enjoying this series as the author continues to add depth to her characters. Jenna finally showed real guts without Kane overshadowing her.

I also liked the way the story alternated between the killer and the police, as both tried to meet their goals. In this way, we got into the killers head a little, without any clues as to who he was.

These books have great plots, and are fast reads, always with a lot of action and plenty of suspects.

Once again, D.K. Hood kept me entertained!

One of the most fabulous thrillers written by D. K. Hood. Her last book was too dark for me, so I was a bit apprehensive with this one. But D. K. Hood proved me wrong on all fronts.

She used a fabulous concept of a pay per view channel and gave it heights that had my adrenaline soaring to a fervored pitch. The team of Jenna - Kane - Wolfe are back at the Black Rock Falls. And I loved every line of this book.

I read this in 3 hours flat and believe me, every part worked fluently to make me anxious to get to the bottom of it. I needed to know who the killer was, stat. And yeah, I didn't expect the person exposed at the end. The book kept me gripped till the end.

The team worked in great camaraderie, I liked their mutual respect and their movements were fluid. Each one knew the others' strengths. I keep expecting a romantic angle between Kane and Jenna... Well it just remains a hint of a whisper...  Maybe the next book would explore it more!!

Black Rock Falls, Montana -- "Beautiful one day, crazy as hell the next."

A merciless predator is stalking the trails and woods of Black Rock Falls during peak hunting and hiking season. The killer seems to focus on couples who are going off to secluded areas and trails to spend some quality time alone. But they don't come back and bodies have been found -- murdered in very gruesome fashion. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner, Deputy David Kane begin the painstaking process of investigation with hopes of finding this madman before there are more deaths. When they suspect that there have been cameras placed along certain trails, it comes to their attention that the killer may be linked to the Dark Web and pay per view. NO SPOILERS.

This is simply a very entertaining series with characters that have grown on me since book #1. Both Jenna and Dave have a previous life history of being covert operators and are now in Black Rock Falls staying hidden from those who knew them before. The pair has a great relationship that I wish would finally be taken in a more romantic direction, but I do appreciate that there isn't any "romance" in the books. They work well together and have set up a great support team to help with solving the crimes. The descriptions of the area are very compelling and set the tone for the dark investigations that seem to be cropping up in their little remote town.

I do love the series and can't wait for #5. Be sure to start with the first book and read in order! Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the e-book ARC to read and review.

OMG, D.K. Hood, I hope you are busy writing? I really can't wait for the next one. What did you do to me?

The whole time I sat on the edge of my seat, more than once crying 'oh, nooooo!' You really know of to keep one's attention, I'll give you that.

The thoughts are going around in my head trying to figure out who was behind all the crimes and I really nearly fell of my chair when the name was revealed. And then the ending ... It totally brought tears to my eyes.

I did not like Jenna's behaviour in the previous book, but now I see some positive changes.

This book is really fast paced with an all consuming air of danger and suspense. I am thoroughly happy that hiking is not my cup of tea. 5 stars.

Thank you, D.K. Hood, Bookouture and Netgalley.

Ooh this is a great read. I was literally holding my breath during the last few pages, desperate to know how this book would end.
The tension builds throughout the book as more and more bodies are found in the forest and Kane and Alton realise they have a serial killer on their hands.
The team work together to try and find the killer but in the end a dangerous plan is the only option to catch this clever killer.
Many lives are at stake but Jenna sees no other option and puts her life on the line.
This is a great series and the comraderie amongst the team is one of the things I love about it. The chemistry between Jenna and Dave is another and I just hope one day they’re both brave enough to admit their feelings.
I really can’t wait for the next book on this series.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

The crying season by DK Hood.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy David kane are back. This time a killer is targeting couples and hunt them in the forest. He is quick and evil. Can Jenna and her team stop him?
Omg an absolutely fantastic read with great characters. Loved kane and Jenna. I was on the edge of my seat for the part of the forest. Don't want to give anything away but there is shocks and twists galore. I had no idea who it was. I didn't realise this was book 4. But I still was able to read it. 5*. Highly recommended.

‘Psychopaths are welcome in Black Rock Falls’

Winter is coming to Black Rock Falls. The temperature is dropping but this does not deter the hunters of Montana and not just those who are game hunting…

There is a serious psycho-hunter on the prowl! His MO is seriously twisted as MOs go but as I learnt more about his killing spree, my blood chilled with a shocking extra layer to the way this psychopath killer operates. D.K. Hood has created a extreme killer this time, I’m scared to think what goes on in this woman’s head sometimes!

“Why do these lunatics keep choosing Black Rock Falls?”

As with the previous Kane and Alton books, I got to spend a bit of time with the evil individual who is tormenting Black Rock Falls. This psychopath is a strange individual, getting kicks from the hunt and the kill of his victims.

But the “well-oiled machine” that is the Black Rock Falls Sheriff’s Department are on hand. I have loved this team since I met them back in Don’t Tell A Soul. And as the team has grown in strength, they’ve become more rounded as a crime fighting team. Their team work is brilliant, each playing to their strengths and not afraid to learn new skills.

All I can say is D.K. Hood, you’ve done it again, another excellent crime thriller that is dark and twisted! Thank you and keep them coming!!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Crying Season, the fourth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane of the Black Water Falls, Montana PD.

When a skull is discovered in the forest Jenna and the team head out to recover it and assess the scene. Along the way they find another skeleton tied to a tree. While pondering this another couple goes missing and it becomes clear that they are hunting a serial killer.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Crying Season which has a good mystery before a tense, action packed finale. It is told mainly from the investigators' point of view with brief glimpses into the unnamed killer's thought processes and actions. Normally my eyes roll at these glimpses and at some points they did (usually at his reasons) but I found his methodology interesting and insightful with regards to moving the plot forward. I think, though, that this is the first book in the series where I have guessed the killer's identity fairly early in the novel so either I'm more alert than usual (unlikely) or it is well signposted. It did not spoil my enjoyment of the chase and the denouement is well worth the journey through the novel as it is tense and action packed as I said. I felt myself getting stressed and wondering what would happen to the main players as I lived every minute with them. Kudos Ms Hood for getting this reader involved and caring.

Alton and Kane (not their real names) are former specialised law enforcement officers and are part of the Witness Protection Program and were placed separately in Black Water Falls, which has become the serial killer capital of America. I keep expecting to get some kind of update on why these specialists have been placed together, along with a third operative, Shane Wolfe, in this small rural town but nothing doing in this novel. What they bring is a wealth of much needed expertise and experience and a potential romance which neither of them has acted on so far. It's getting close to put up or shut up time.

The Crying Season is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Each book is getting creepier and creepier, and I have it on good authority that the next book is going to be even MORE creepier!!!

This is the fourth book in the series, and whilst you may potentially be able to read it on your own, I don’t want you to (demanding ah!). You would so be missing out on the team and the little details, but if you must you can read it on its own..but please don’t!!

I really could not guess who the big bad was in this book, and to be honest I could have been happy to not know. This serial killer is one crazy messed up person, they can have a ticket to a different crazy town to me and they can stay there!!!!!! There are no clues to who the perp is at all, (Well I didn’t think so!) and I was waiting on baited breathe with the rest of the team.

80% in the book and things go bat s**t crazy! I was flying through the book, heart in my throat, I felt like I was holding my breath, and there was a LOT of OMG OMG OMG OMG moments in my head! What was going on!! And then there was that twist and that ending, man I need the next book like yesterday!!! I can’t cope!

As said this story is much more creepier than before. Ms Hood’s writing is awesome, to put it in plain English, as you can picture the idyllic and peaceful forest, the sounds of the animals, the scenery and then the blood and guts are thrown in too. I devour every word on the page, I click my kindle button as quick as I could, as this story was haunting me. I could not figure out why this was happening and what the connection was!

Someone is hunting women, in hunting season, perfect cover story but there is a twist with this hunt, and it shocks you to the core. It is the sort of book I could picture on the big screen, it would be like a really epic 80’s slasher pic, I would love to see it!

The chapters when we are in the predator’s head were spine chilling. The thought process and lack of human emotion apart from the hunt, makes you realise how messed up they are! A person completely devoid of human attachment, with a secret cave of goodies. Aaaaaahhh, don’t run for the hills, stay in the main streets this time!

As always, I adore Kane and Alton’s relationship, the fact they are getting closer makes me so happy, still, the miscommunications and understanding with them are apparent. But happy days the team is back! Still loving the new additions and Rawley, he is just adorable. They work so well together, Kane beasting them to be better and Alton and her guidance and direction making them a well-oiled team.

This is my favourite go-to series of the year so far, I can’t fault the book, even with all the blood, gore and terrifying actions of a predator and the crazy reasoning behind said actions! Just makes you wonder what goes on in some people’s head!

I love everything about these books and really think the time needs to be invested here, so go buy the books, lock yourself away and fully immerse yourself to Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane and a little-known place called Black Rock Falls. (Thanks for stopping by with my rambles….*whisper* go buy the books)

Pssst…think this may just be my book of the month!

3 and 1 / 2 stars

On a trail ride outside of Black Rock Falls, Montana, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner Deputy David Kane and others, including a pathologist, discover the skeletal remains of a couple in the forest. They were clearly hunted down and murdered. Shane Wolfe, a pathologist is a major character in the book as well. He is very good and gives detailed and informative descriptions of the wounds on the various victims.

These murders add to the burden of keeping the peace in a town where turkey, elk and deer hunting seasons overlap. Many fights break out as the testosterone fueled men go at one another.

Meanwhile, the reader finds out the identity of the killer and how they lure their victims to their deaths. He is a very careful planner and videos the whole “hunt” and watches it over and over to re-live his sick thrills.
Jenna and Kane and the other officers decide to set up a trap for the killer. Working from the evidence they found and Kane profile of the murderer, they come up with a plan to trap them. Their plan goes awry and after some very tense moments, they have the killer.

Jenna is an interesting character. Being a former DEA agent, I would have thought that she would be made of tougher stuff. She seems to rely on Kane far too much. Her character is inconsistent and she is doubtful of her own abilities. Maybe Kane should be the sheriff. I mention it because it was more than a little irritating for me. Kane is very good at what he does. He is a martial artist and very quick and smart. He is also a profiler. I liked the character of Shane Wolfe. He is very good at communicating information.

I want to thank both NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this interesting book for me to read, enjoy and review.

DK Hood has done it again, book 4 in the Kane and Alton series is bloody brilliant, I loved it. Each book is better than the last so I am rubbing my hands with glee at the thought of getting book 5 in the not too distant future! Can I have it now please 🙂

The Crying Season was seriously good, it was full of tension, characters we have come to love and a plot so well written it will have you holding your breath and madly reading unable to put the book down.

We all love hiking right, it’s a fun safe activity. Black Rock Falls has stunning scenery and wonderful hiking trails and is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Is there something sinister happening in the forest? Is someone terrorising the hikers? Well as you know I am not one for giving away spoilers so you will just have to read this fabulous book to find out!

The book is fast paced, non stop action that smacks you in the face page after page leaving you breathless and on the edge of your seat. And that ending, just wow!

This book was awesome, I loved it. I am a big fan of DK Hood, this one gets a big thumbs up and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would, I reckon its a good 7.

Apologies for the short review, I am still recovering from cornea transplant surgery, it’s a long healing process and I am finding after a long day at work my eyes are very tired and sore. I think it’s safe to say though I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Fabulous Book #4 in the Detective Kane and Alton series. A serial killer who targets couples in isolated hiking areas creates chaos in Black Rock Falls. David Kane and Sheriff Jenna Alton work great together and have a developing relationship which I hope the Author takes further. They catch their killer but come close to becoming his next victims. I hope this series continues for a long time. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Fabulous. This series just gets better and better. Terrifying plot combining good old physcopatic killers and technology. You can feel the fear in the victims. Sub plot continues to develop nicely but still no explanations why these particular people have been sent to this particular place to work together. The culprit totally threw me and gave a cracking twist

Black Falls Rock has, Kane and Alton soon realise, another psychopath on the hunt. The team work closely together to try and bring down the murderer as the death toll rises. A plan is hatched by the Sheriff's dept... I've read and loved all four D. K. Hood books now and loved them. I may also be slightly in love with Deputy Kane. Edge of my seat and holding my breath, my heart beat is still up. Cannot praise D. K. Hood enough she plants the clues excellently throughout the book. 5 stars from me.

Firstly thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced copy of D K Hood's 4th book in the series. Once again D K Hood delivers a cracker of a story. It moves along at a fast pace and before you know its over. It is gritty and at times you feel as if you are right there in the pages with Jenna and the gang. I loved every single bit of this book. It really does remind me of Karen Rose and Alison Brennan. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. Cant wait for the next one.

Ms Hood has done it again

This is another can't put it down book. The characters grow more with every new book, and the killer gets harder to figure out. I give it a five star rating. Can't wait for the next book.

Wow wow 😮
Omg I love all the books. Can’t wait until the next one comes out. Whew who would have thought “he” was the killer. Just sick. This is a must read.

This is the fourth book in the series featuring Detectives Dave Kane and Jenna Alton and is a fantastic rollercoaster of a book. There is a serial killer loose in Black Rock Falls. Dave and Jenna are called out when a skull is discovered on a hiking trail in the forest. Before long two more bodies are discovered. The killer is getting his kicks from hunting couples down, killing the man first and then torturing the woman. On carrying out their investigations they discover that the killer is recording and live streaming the killings. Dave and Jenna then use themselves as bait in an attempt to capture him. This is a very graphic read, leaving you feeling that you have been running in the forest and the tension is unbearable. I look forward to book number five to see if Dave and Jenna finally admit they have feelings for each other. This book is a great read, highly recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

This is book #4 of the Kane and Alton series.  It can be read as a standalone book, but it does make sense to read the series in order.

We are back in Black Rock Falls with Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane.  It is hunting season but the Police Department find themselves on the trail of a different kind of hunter when a human skull is found in the woods that surround the town.  When more bodies are found, Alton and Kane know they need to head off into the forest to try and find the killer….

This is an absolutely fantastic series.  The first book of the series, Don’t Tell a Soul had me hooked and as I’ve read the following books I’ve realised that this series is going from strength to strength.  I’m not usually a big fan of crime series set in America, I much prefer good old British crime, but this series is just so different.  It takes you to a place that you don’t usually get to see, away from the crime riddled streets of New York or Washington and to a little town in Montana surrounded by mountains and forests.

This book was definitely scoring a 10 on my creep-o-meter!  Could there be anything creepier or scarier than being hunted down in deep dark forest by a psychopathic killer? – Possibly not!  I didn’t have a first inkling as to who the killer could be and was genuinely surprised when I found out as I didn’t expect it!  You also don’t get to find out who the killer is until the very end, holding the suspense and tension all the way through the book.

We then come to the good Sheriff and her Deputy!  They have to be my most favourite pairing of law enforcement officers to date!  I love the way they work so well together and are continually looking out for each other.  I have been waiting throughout the previous 3 books to see if they eventually get together and was hoping that this book would finally show their romantic side….but if you think I’m going to tell you if that happens, then you can think again!  Read the book and find out!  It was also good to see Wolfe in this book as well, although slightly disappointed that he took a bit more of a back seat in the storyline.

The storyline throughout was dark, tense and terrifying!  It was nail-bitingly good and at the end of each chapter, I just wanted to keep reading right through the next!  The ending was fantastic and it had me holding my breath throughout.  This author certainly knows how to keep her readers in suspense and get their hearts beating faster!  I literally cannot wait until the next book!!!  Highly recommended!  Absolutely brilliant!
