Independence

Independence is a story in three parts, named for three passionate women – Aino, Salme and Leena – who struggle to achieve independence, whether from a war, a lover or a domineering father. It’s a family story, as well as the story of Finland, a small European nation fighting to be born from the savage civil war of 1918.

The author’s grandmother Aino was imprisoned aged 19, during the civil war, for the crime of feeding the ‘wrong’ fighters. Aino’s daughter Salme fell in love with an ambitious athlete – charismatic, domineering and frankly mad – and endured a catastrophic divorce. Their daughter – Leena – became a teenage Finnish swimming champion but rebelled against a gruelling training regime and ran away from home in search of freedom.

It is a story of survival, but also of joy and eventually, forgiveness.

Independence is a blinder of a book. The stories of three generations of women in a single family are beautifully told in different narrative styles. The context of nation-building in Finland is a rich political and social backdrop. The book feels personal and intimate, in its account of young women making their way in the world under the most challenging circumstances. It deals with big themes of coming of age, parental and romantic love and disappointment. I look forward to Ms Telen's next one!

A marvel. Beautifully written. I was hooked from the first pages. Aino's story was historically fascinating, heart rendering and compulsive. I thought the following two tales could not compete. I was wrong. Please read this book, it is a treat.

I like books that give insights into history, culture, relationships and involve true memoir, so I was excited to read this. Overall, I enjoyed it and learned more about Finland and its history. But I found the book a bit tedious. I skimmed sections and don’t feel I missed much.
