Bodyman

Rate this book
The first time I got on my knees for President Ashley, it was the night of his inauguration…

And I was only doing my job… helping him remove his shoes.

I’m Lieutenant Commander Kenan Harper, the president’s trusted valet. His loyal aide. His bodyman…

And the fool who’s been in love with Garner Ashley since long before I took this job.

If I had my way, I’d be so much more than his employee, but to say that would be impossible would be the understatement of the century. Garner might be the first openly gay president, but the world’s not ready for a gay First Gentleman, and Garner’s never looked at me with anything but professional courtesy…

Until suddenly, he does.

The first touch between us sparks years of longing into a blaze so bright and wild, neither of us can deny our feelings any longer. But when a relationship is this forbidden, this career-ending, this… world-changing… both of us will have choices to make.

Will I remain in the shadows as the president’s bodyman… or stand out and proud by Garner’s side as the one he loves?

I need to give up reading President romances 😂 I just can't picture the characters because I have never seen a politician that doesn't remind me of a slimy weasel, an extremely old man or a wotsit 😬😬😬

This could have made a really awesome full-length M/M romance. As it was—as is often the case with shorter stories—there was just too limited plotting, character complexity or relationship development to be as wonderful as it had the potential to be.

However, as a sucker for a best friend’s brother trope and as a fan of the whole “president falls in forbidden love” arc, this had a very appealing concept and was super digestible in its easy, addictive telling.

Naturally, I wanted more, but this sexy-sweet (and free!) little M/M shorty served as a decent, welcomed read, during a very restless night for this chronic pain sufferer, and for that, I appreciated the hell out of it.

This is a short (80 page) freebie written for an event, so I'm not going to rate.

The entire thing feels very rushed, with the relationship development mostly off page. The narrative skips ahead by weeks, months, years.

One steamy scene takes up about 40% of the story.

A fictional POTUS as a romantic lead is a hard sell even when it's done well, and imo, it was not done well here.

Damn, I really did like this one! The only problem is that it's just a short novella while it has tremendous potential for a full length book.

🔵 First gay president of the USA/his bodyman (ex Navy)
🟣 Childhood aquaintances (they weren't friends, but closely connected)
🟢 Age gap - 6 years (I'm guessing in their 30's)
🟡 Size difference
🔵 Forced proximity (always together), pining
🟠 Both gay, one not out
🌶️ Good smut; not that much of it, but satisfying; t/b

So this was interesting. I really liked it. A nice surprise.
Kenan was Garner's sister's best friend while they were growing up and when Garner went to study law and went into politics, Kenan became a commander in the Navy.
Kenan goes to work for Garner on the sister's request, since Garner is the first openly gay president of the USA and basically can't trust anyone, so he needs someone reliable and Kenan, despite his accolades, takes a low paid job of Garner's bodyman.

They're always together, Kenan is taking care of Garner for the second term of his presidency already, but one thing they're both not aware of about each other is that they've both really liked each other since they were teenage kids, basically.

There's a lot of pining going on, Kenan is patiently waiting for the right time to approach Garner and when he finally does, Garner is blown away.

"The man was touch starved. Sex starved. Man starved. And I wanted to make sure he never went hungry again."

Kenan was a tall, buff, steady guy with a dominant streak and Garner was a blond, runner-type guy who's not only good looking but extremely smart. A perfect visual, a perfect combination. The only thing I didn't like was Keenan's military expertise not being utilized, but it actually made sense, since they could spend more time together if his primary job was being with Garner night and day.

This is one of those novellas where you definitely think EVERYTHING should've been more developed, because it's just that good. Kenan and Garner were fantastic characters and had this amazing foundation for a really good relationship. I wanted more of that pining, more about their past and time together, more of the back and forth, more of the words, secret dates, more of their amazing sex.

"When I moved over the top of him and finally, fucking finally, began pushing my cock inside of him, I closed my eyes on a groan. President Garner Ashley’s hole squeezed around me. And I knew I was finally home."

Yeah.
I'm getting 400 pages with books where I'd want to rip my hair out and then I get this story where I'd gladly read those 400 pages, but no. Not happening.

Anyway. 😕

Audio: 5 stars for Michael Dean. I got this off her website in the ebook/audio bundle.

Book: 3 stars

I enjoyed this for how fast it was. I do wish it was a full book, I could see this being a great full length novel! But for a novella less than 90 pages it did the job of keeping me entertained and smiling!

Glad I decided to pick this up!

A MM romance novella where the US President falls for his Bodyman. With this deliciously scandalous, close proximity premise how could I not try it?
I liked Garner & Kenan. I already owned it as a holiday freebie from author from last year but I ultimately listened to it!

Michael did a better job at narration here. I was skeptical to try this after how Shy Sheldon was but I'm a sucker for short stories. It's still a bit monotone but fine & both MCs sound more normal lol.

President Garner is out gay, which puts extra pressure on his shoulders. He's hard-working, charismatic, polite & is caring. G's 6yrs older than K 🙌.
Kenan is ex-navy, now the Bodyman / Personal Aid who had a bit of sexuality confusion. He's calm, collected, blends in the shadows, protective of Garner.

They were the boys next door. Kenan was friends with G's younger sis. They've worked together for years now, I loved their trust & their crushes are cute 😁. Longing (story'd be so angsty if we saw it for years!) was believable. This is their "fuck it" moment 🥵.

There's so many flashbacks & POV kept changing—in so little time during their BJ, which was frustrating. I was listening to this while working, kinda zoned out on some flashbacks. I would say the path of them being out for world was too easy, but I'm glad for them as their world is progressive. The ending's adorable!

Audiobook+Story ratings :
POV: 1st Person, Dual POV
Narration: Single, Michael Dean
1) The Characters: 4.5/5
2) The Feels: 🥺😯😏😍😜🤔🙁😬😳🥵🥰
3) Sexy/Steamy times: 2/5 (Short but hot)
4) Levels: Mild Angst, Kinda Cute, No Dark
5) Build up: 4/5 (it's short, but interesting), Style: 3/5
6) Voice acting: 6/10 (Fine)

The best bit about this one is "Get on your knees, Mr President."

Other than that, it succeeds in beating the novella curse of 'pick two from plot, depth, sex'. But only in the sense that it doesn't deliver on any of the three.

It's sweet though, if you're into books where they fall in love off page because the first time they touch is the first time they say 'I love you' but they've supposedly known each other since they were kids so maybe it makes sense?

I wonder in real life which one will come first in USA.

Yeah, this didn't work for me.
I have a hard time finding presidents desirable in any way and I can't think of the American president without disgust.
I don't believe there could be a openly gay president in the US.
I don't believe these two worked in close proximity for 4,5 years and basically nothing happened.

I couldn't distinguish which POV was going on, and the super short characters made it worse. The story sort of just bounced around.

Half of the book is a single blowjob scene during which they reminisce their whole history. Then there's half a page intercourse scene after. The pacing is bad, mmkay.

I sort of liked a few piny moments and a couple of scenes after the faithful night. Then I couldn't really give a damn what they were doing.

There was also a pretty decent quote about not hiding the relationship as it's important to be true to yourself and to others. Yes! People with power are exactly the people who should be trying to change the world and not hiding behind the (potential) ire of the public.

I received this as part of a MM romance giveaway. I wasn’t familiar with what the president’s ‘bodyman’ was when I started reading, but it’s like a personal aid/personal assistant/valet. I was ok with the plot set-up, but it did feel rushed with quick chapters. I wanted more backstory but since this was a novella and a freebie, I wasn’t too picky. I enjoy reading new-to-me authors to sample their work to see if I’d enjoy a longer novel (though I may have read one of her novels before… not sure). That said, I’d def give this author another read, though probably not if it’s mostly political MCs.

❝I'm sorry,❞ I said, the words muffled against the hot skin of his neck. But they were lies. All lies. I wasn't sorry. And I didn't regret it. I'd wanted to hold him, be held by him, for a very long time.

This one is good. A short one but still good. I mean a president x bodyman romance? That's a first for me. After finishing this I was like I need to revisit the other Lennox books that I gave the chop rating. Wish there was more but it is what it is., Heartwarming, fast, and definitely swoony (a bit).

A magnificent short story !

I loved it, from the thought filled characters, the unique situation and the deep, passionate love.

I highly recommend this tale.

ENJOY !

* It reminded me of this series, "Enemies of the State, by Tal Bauer" I loved that, too !

Bodyman

I love books by Lucy Lennox. I think my favorite was the Made Marian Series. But she writes many books with other authors too like the After Oscar Series with Molly Maddox. But this book is completely different. It is about a standing President and his Body man.
I believe all the best stories come from the best characters . The characters are well written here are very well-developed. There is the President, who is also the Commander-and Chief of all Armed Forces. The other character is the Bodyman. The Bodyman takes care of all the menial duties for the president. It pays little but requires top clearance. The President in this book is Garner Ashley, the first openly gay president. When hiring his Bodyman, he has held a secret crush for many years but doesn’t know whether the Bodyman is straight or gay. The Bodyman he hired is Commander Kenan Harper. He is 6 years younger and Kenan has held a crush since he was 12 and Garner was 18 leaving for Harvard.
Without telling too much of the story, these two men hold private torches not just through 1 administration but they are in their 5th year. Suffice it to say, Kenan was trying to calm the President down on Air Force One after some serious losses. Air Force One becomes a bit more passionate and erotic.
I cannot say anymore but I do recommend reading it. It is a quick read like a novella. Enjoy the book!

I first need to say that I love Lucy Lennox so I had no doubt clicking the buy button on this short story. Unfortunately, I felt like this might have just been a scene from an already established book or storyline that I wasn't already aware of (Is it? I honestly do not know).

Yes, this is a very short story, but even then, everything seemed to happen so quickly and the build up, and the development of characters just felt extremely superficial and very one dimensional.

The story line introduces us to the President- Garner Ashley - and his bodyman Lieutenant Commander Kenan Harper. We get a very quick history on the relationship which had been completely professional - until a certain event. Then, after this one event, the President decides to completely throw caution to the wind and not only make the relationship public, but also have a wedding at the White House. Now, that is completely possible - but to me, I would have liked to see more of....well, everything. More depth of the characters, more description of how difficult it was going to be to go public, and how they dealt with it. But...I know, I know, it was a very short story and time was limited.

Michael Dean did his usual great job with the narration.

Overall 4 out of 5 stars

Story 4 out of 5 stars

Engaging story.

Overall 3.5*
Story 4*
Performance 2.5*

This was an engaging story, between the US president and his "bodyman"- essentially his valet. Garner and Keenan have a long history, as Keenan is Garner's sister's best friend. But until he became Garner's bodyman, it was more of a distant type of history. But it wasn't until his second term that things between them changed. I really liked these two characters and was happy things were able to work out for them!

I usually like Michael Dean's narration just fine, but this one was not great. There weren't real chapter breaks, just switching between points of view, with him saying the name of each character as it switched. There wasn't much of a break in between, like there normally is between chapters, and it was just really hard to differentiate who was supposed to be speaking. He didn't give them their own voices, so I have to say the audio itself was disappointing, while the story was good.

Honestly, the only real issue I had with this novella was that it was a novella. I could have read an entire book of Garner and Kenan. BODYMAN was a super quick and super enjoyable read.

Kenan has been in love with Garner since he was a pre-teen. And while Garner continues to climb the political ladder to eventually become president, Kenan rises in the ranks of the Navy.

After leaving the Navy and talking to Garner's sister, Kenan decides to apply for the role of Garner's bodyman. Which is basically the personal valet to the president. Kenan wants to support him and be the one Garner can trust.

Garner is the first openly gay president. He can't fall for his bodyman... can he?

OMG, HE DID!

Garner desperately needed Kenan's calm and quiet support, and Kenan just needed Garner. I loved these two so much!

This was a freebie during a summer novella giveaway, but I'm pretty sure you can grab it on amazon or through Lucy's website.

Audio Review

Bodyman is a poignant exploration of love that transcends the barriers of societal expectations and the demands of public life. The chemistry between Kenan and Garner is electric, and their journey from unspoken longing to full-blown romance is as intense as it is rewarding. The story also raises important questions about the cost of living authentically in the public eye and the courage it takes to claim the love you deserve.

Michael Dean's narration is the perfect complement to Lennox's writing. His voice captures the gravity of Kenan’s internal struggle and the deep, simmering emotions that finally come to the surface. Dean’s performance adds layers to the characters, making the listener feel every heartbeat, every hesitant touch, and every passionate moment between Kenan and Garner. I loved this story so much and what a ending

Definitely not a favorite from Lucy Lennox, although I wonder - grabbed this as part of an offering of (mostly) free short stories from Prolific Works earlier this summer, so perhaps this is not the polished up edition that's just gone live on Amazon. More errors than I'm used to seeing from this author, and overall, the story felt, well, flat. It has its moments, but did not bring the usual Lucy joy, and most certainly not on a par with her full-length stories. If it ever goes to Kindle Unlimited, I might give it a second look, but as it is, I'm not inspired to shell out the current price to see if the "real" version is better.

Sadly, the free format also denies the ability to see any highlights or notes made while reading.

So, I read this twice? There isn't any indication that this was previously released as a freebie (I got it on ProlificWorks), so I had no idea I was rereading until I'd read the first chapter. It's a fun premise, but super rushed. That feels like an odd thing to say, because there's only so much room for a mutual pining boss-employee relationship to go, but there's plenty of space to round out the characters and to create external situations, and even without that, they would have benefitted from a more transitional shift in their relationship. Why does a switch flip THAT DAY? That can't possibly be the first time the president has been emotionally crushed. Just trying to do too much too fast.

This was my first book by Lucy Lennox and I loved it. It is just a short novella but there was a depth of feelings that just hooked me. The yearning between Kenan and Garner was so good! The loyalty and steadfast belief that Kenan has in Garner was so touching. He was absolutely there for him, no matter what. Just beautiful. The trust that Garner had in Kenan was perfect. These two men were so good together. We only get a couple of steamy scenes but they are well written and I just wish there was more to the story! But in the best way. I loved these two men and am so glad they got their HEA.

The author kindly made this a free read and I'm so grateful, this is a riveting and sexy tale about the President of the United States, who is Gay, and his Bodyman. These two knew each other from childhood but the close proximity of the job revealed their secret feelings. It's not a long tale but it is an intense read at times. A nice read.
