This volume was incredibly detailed from every point of view. Since it’s the beginning of the series, it lays the foundation for the entire universe, offering tons of information to help us understand where everything is happening. There were a few intriguing secondary characters that caught my attention, and I’m really curious if they’ll get their own stories. I guess I’ll find out in book 2 or 3 or maybe never! 🤣
The main characters definitely sparked my interest. We have Demetra, who used to be, let’s say, the lover of a powerful, arrogant angel who couldn’t stand to be contradicted. And because Demetra dared to speak her mind, she was punished: her wings were cut off and she was cast out of Celestium into Hellcity, the home of the fallen.
There, we meet Rikarion, a kind of assassin (if I can call him that), and Dracian, some kind of demonic police officer. The paths of these three characters cross repeatedly throughout the story, forming interesting connections and slowly building something more.
I really empathized with Demetra. I understood her attitude and her point of view so well. She’s that kind of strong female character who knows her worth and refuses to be walked over anymore. Even after being punished, she tries to adapt, to rebuild her life and integrate into this new reality.
Dracian was such a sweet surprise! Despite being a demon 😈, he has a gentle soul. He’s kind, empathetic, and thoughtful. Through his small, meaningful gestures, he totally won me over. I’m literally smiling like an idiot just thinking about him right now.
Rikarion, on the other hand, was a real challenge. He’s arrogant, full of himself, and acts like the world owes him everything because he’s the best of the best. But as the story progressed, I realized this was all just a mask. Behind his bad boy attitude lies a lot of pain. Deep down, he just wants to be loved for who he is, not for what he can do or what he has. He longs to be appreciated, but no matter what he tries, he can’t seem to catch the attention of the one being he truly wants. And at some point, he has to find the strength to break free from that toxic love and finally start building the life he deserves.
Even though these characters are supernatural, DARI managed to make them feel incredibly human and real. I saw pieces of myself in all three of them. Even Rikarion, who I couldn’t stand at first, grew on me. As I got to know him better, I realized he’s just a tortured soul, longing for love… just like the rest of us.
I also loved that the story is told from a triple POV, which allowed me to get inside each character’s head, to feel their thoughts and emotions, and watch their relationships form and grow over time.
There was one particular scene (no spoilers!) that DARI wrote so meticulously… every gesture, every feeling was captured. Nothing was left out. Each character received exactly the amount of affection and care they needed in that moment 💫. It was a powerful reminder that yes, stories can be both fantastical and emotionally authentic.
And that ending… it shattered me. Broke my heart into a million little pieces. I did not see it coming. The epilogue made me cry, and I kept hoping that maybe, just maybe, it was all an illusion.
Now I’m super curious to see what happens in book 2, and whether there’s any hint related to the ending of book 1… but we’ll see what the story has in store 📖✨
