The Veil Between Us

Rate this book
Florence "Rency" Faber isn’t dead. And yet, when she stumbles across her long-deceased great-great-grandmother’s marriage license and is strangely compelled to write the name they both share on the dotted line, the past and present start to blur together. Strange things begin to happen: a bizarre recurring dream set a century ago, the little stone house in the woods next to her grandmother’s house keeps disappearing, and the uncanny, cosmic connection between her and Henry, her mysterious, compelling neighbor—who turns out to be a ghost.

Even though she’s only staying with her grandmother for the summer, Rency is determined to help Henry break the curse that has trapped him in the veil between life and death, pulling her into a century old drama—one with unpredictable consequences and increasingly risky stakes. With the clock ticking down until she leaves, she'll have to decide once and for all what her heart wants most: to embrace a world in-between with the man she loves, or to return to her life without him.

I loved this cozy, mysterious romance and had a hard time putting it down! From the characters to the setting to the nail-bitting climax, this story was so well written and not at all cheesy (as most ghost boyfriend stories would seem to be). Highly recommend as your next fall read!

First and foremost, huge thanks to Michelle for giving me the opportunity to early read and review this book.

Ok, this one really surprised me in all the very best ways. I wasn't sure what to expect to be totally honest. They synopsis sounded super cute but I think it's difficult to write a romance like this in a way that is believable and doesn't come off totally corny but Michelle really did it! First off, the setting of this book had me sold in the first couple of chapters and I was so mad that I chose to start reading this late at night when I had to be at work early the next day, forcing me to take a pause (seriously, I challenge anyone to start reading this and fight the urge to not read it all in one sitting!). "The Veil Between Us" reads like a cozy small town romance... with the exception that Henry's a ghost and Rency can't have him (ya know, on account of he *is* a ghost). Their love story reads part fated romance, part forbidden romance and I was SO here for it. Watching Rency fall for Henry while simultaneously knowing that she was plummeting towards her own heartbreak was both so enthralling and so difficult to read. Her ability to self-sacrifice to end Henry's curse knowing it would also end whatever lay between them was admirable and devastating. Not only were the characters and plot enough to sell me, Michelle's writing was incredibly beautiful and well done. Nothing bums me out more than a book with a good premise but terrible writing.

My only gripe? MICHELLE, THIS BOOK WAS NOT LONG ENOUGH!!! I could have read several more hundred pages of Rency and Henry pining for one another and falling in love. While a quick read was a nice refresher from the 600+ page books I've grown accustomed to reading, I seriously would have read this book had it been twice as long.

Seriously seriously seriously, if you are looking for the perfect cozy romance with a small side of spooky to get you in the mood for autumn, ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR NOW!!!

4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for this lovely, cozy, delightful read!

First the basics:

POV: first person
POV characters: Florence "Rency" Faber
Verb tense: present
Trigger warnings: talk of murder/death, ghosts (though if this is a trigger, you probably shouldn't read this book at all)
Spice: none-to-low, primarily has a couple of low-spice kissing scenes

This book was the perfect way to indulge all my cozy feels as we try to convince the weather to cool off enough to usher in fall and spooky season. I snatched this book based on the blurb alone because I love the idea of a cozy, fall-themed ghost story, and I haven't actually read one before. So here I am, all warm and cozy after a delightful read, and I'm going to share some of my favorite things.

Rency Faber is a great character. I said it. She's a teacher on summer break, spending the months off at her grandmother's sprawling farm with the task of helping her catalog the centuries of family history saved up in the old homestead. Rency's family expects her to convince her grandmother to sell the farm and move to a smaller home or an assisted living residence. Unfortunately for her extended family, Rency is the exact wrong person for this particular job as she's a history teacher with a love of preserving things in their elements, and she loves indulging in the past. She adores her grandmother's home and doesn't want to see it split into parcels of land and developed into a massive subdivision of cookie cutter homes. (Girl, I so get it! Me too, Rency, me too!)

I watch as she preps her second cup of tea, and I wonder what this whole experience is like for her: generations of stories held inside one woman, the memories swirling in this contained inner space. Was it lonely? To remember but not have anyone to remember with? I feel overfull with emotions, thinking about what it must be liked to have so many stories held inside.

There's a lot of reflecting in this book, and it's reflecting on things like the nature of memory and the loss of companionship with those who share your memories. It's poignant in places, and I really enjoyed thinking about how all of us might eventually end up being the lone carrier of the family memories.

Caroline is chatty and hasn't seen Grandma in a while, so she carries most of the conversations. She and my grandma Lydia are cut from the same cloth, no matter how much they tease each other. Both are bright, vivid personalities, artists at heart. Grandma Lydia creates with her garden in the summer and her textiles in the winter--knitting hats and gloves and my beloved thick wool socks--while Caroline creates with her photography. Together, they are non-stop banter and laughter.

One of the best parts of this book is the supportive family Rency has. Sometimes it's hard to find a book with good, strong family systems. It's why we so adore the found family theme, because broken families exist. But strong family units also exist, and it can be difficult to find them in contemporary fiction. This book features a feisty, busy grandma who hasn't slowed down in her old age, a supportive cousin preparing for her wedding, and the soon-to-be husband, a doctor in training with a soft spot for Rency.

The book is filled with lovely prose like this: I can't embrace the colorful conversation--my inner self is still stuck in the black-and-white photocopied images I brought home with me.. Isn't that just delightful?

Rency is such a fun protagonist because she's spent so much of her life looking backwards into the past. She embodies the kind of person who's afraid to take risks and embrace the future, and she doesn't want to chance messing up her current, safe life. Then she meets Henry, and her whole perspective slowly shifts as she begins working with her grandma's handy man, who she doesn't know is, in fact, a ghost. Once she discovers his existence somewhere in the veil between life and death, Rency is determined to help him. Unfortunately for her, she's also experiencing the pangs of falling in love at the same time. As she discovers the complexity of his curse, Rency falls into patterns of behavior I can definitely relate to.

Curses are made to be broken, right? After spiraling for a bit while attempting to even accept the idea of curses being real, I fall into an Internet hole, feeling very much like Bella Swan typing up her little scraps of knowledge into Google, searching for answer to the questions I have about the mysterious boy I have a crush on.

I see you, Twilight reference! And I salute you.

While this all sounds like a serious premise, the lighthearted banter, cozy settings, and delightful humor really pull the potential tension from the story and give it a warmer feel. And, really, with scenes like this, who wouldn't get a little chuckle?

Below my window, Henry waves up at me. Even in the shadowed light from the house, his eyes are bright stars, shining almost catlike in the darkness. "is now too soon?" he calls, voice loud in the silence of the rural night.

"Shh!" I hiss. "You'll wake up Grandma Lydia!"

He smirks at me, and my heart skips a beat. "Rency, I'm a ghost. No one can hear me. You're the one who needs to shush."

We watch Rency slowly come to a decision about what she's willing to pursue and how far she's willing to go to embrace a future she's not guaranteed. She has this heartbreaking choice between trying to break Henry's curse and send him beyond the veil or to hold onto him in this stale, stagnant moment and enjoy what she can have of him. It's that tension that holds the story and keeps me turning the pages.

I don't want to spoil anything, but this book has a lovely, satisfactory ending and really stands alone. And since a standalone is also hard to come by, I must highly recommend this book if you want a cozy romantic read. It's just a great, comfortable story!

The Veil Between Us by Michelle Zeynep is just the book to read now. It is the perfect book for the Fall. Strange things are happening to Florence and she is determined to help break a curse.

This book has surprised me, it is so good and mysterious. I was intrigued the moment I started reading this book. The mystery and the flowing writing style just pulled me in. Florence/Rency is a great character who you can relate to. It has a magical setting which I loved. The plot and worldbuilding made that I had a hard time putting the book down.

The Veil Between Us is a must read for this spooky Fall season. It has everything you want in such a story: it is a sweet cozy mystery novel, very well written, with twist and turns, a swoony romance and with a great chemistry between the main characters. It is a book I enjoyed reading a lot.

A delightfully whimsical fall read!

Practical Magic meets Meg Cabot's Haunted (or Ghost Whisperer, if that first reference is too niche for you)..

I intended to only read the first chapter, and finish the rest the next day, but was instantly captivated and was up until the wee hours of the morning finishing it (it's now 3am).

Michelle Zeynep broke my heart and then put it back together again.

I easily see myself adding a reread of this cozy book to my Ocotber traditions every year.

5 stars- no questions asked. thank you so much, Michelle, for the opportunity to ARC read! i loved every second of this book.

first of all- I went into this book with the impression that this was a spooky-season romcom... it was, in a way, both romantic and comical. however, this book was so much more. this book put me through every emotion possible... ant times I felt like my heart was going to explode with love/happiness and others I felt like it was going to shatter. Michelle's ability to tell a story and genuinely elicit emotions is magical. the characters were likable, the setting was fitting, and the plot was strong. it's EXTREMELY hard to write a ghost love story without it turning cheesy but my god... Michelle delivered. admittedly, I fell in love with Henry too.

aside from some VERY minimal formatting issues, I can't point out any flaws in this book. while part of me wished it was longer, the realistic side of my knows it's the perfect length. nothing dragged, nothing felt sped through or glossed over. it was perfectly paced from start to finish and came full circle in every way possible. I really do want to give a kudos to Michelle for this book... not only was the story itself amazing, but her writing skill is top-tier. even entertaining books can fall flat if the writing capability is lacking... but not here!

overall, I highly recommend that you add this book to your september/october TBR. this book deserves all of the hype.

This book. THIS BOOK. I cannot even begin to describe the emotions I went through as I was reading. It's at once a small town, contemporary romance with spooky vibes, BUT it's also so, so, so much more than that. Rency and Henry's tale is not just a cutesy romcom (though it was extremely cute), but is something that will tear your soul out and then knit it back together piece by piece.

When Florence "Rency" Faber agrees to spend the summer helping her grandmother catalogue her belongings, she expects to learn some neat family history. What she doesn't expect is that she'll fall for her grandmother's young, attractive neighbor Henry--or that he'll turn out to be a ghost. As Rency helps Henry try to break the century-old curse tying him in the strange "veil between worlds", she'll have to choose between helping the man she loves and breaking her own heart.

Zeynep is a gorgeously lyrical writer, and her prose easily evokes the eeriness that Rency experiences as she learns about Henry and his past. I won't spoil anything, but there were TWISTS that made me gasp out loud, keeping me on the hook until the very (satisfying) end. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Oh. My. Ghost. This book absolutely stole my heart and shattered it all at once—in the best way possible! The Veil Between Us is the perfect cozy, spooky romance that I didn’t know I needed. I mean, a love story with a ghost? Michelle made it work so beautifully, it wasn’t even a little bit cheesy.

Rency is the kind of protagonist you root for from page one—relatable, quirky, and stuck in the most bittersweet, impossible situation. And Henry? Ugh, swoon-worthy even as a ghost. Their chemistry had me laughing one minute, clutching my heart the next, and eventually ugly crying into my tea. The mix of humor, heartbreak, and those poignant "what would you sacrifice for love?" moments was just magic.

Also, can we talk about the setting? The small-town vibes, the cozy farm, and the veil between worlds felt so real I half-expected a ghostly handyman to show up in my backyard.

The only downside? It wasn’t long enough! I could’ve stayed in this story forever. If you’re looking for a fall read with heart, humor, and just a sprinkle of spooky, The Veil Between Us is IT. Highly recommend—just don’t start it late at night unless you’re okay with zero sleep. 👻❤️

Loved The Veil Between Us!
If you like generational mysteries, summer flings, attractive ghosts, and slightly spooky vibes you’ve found the right book! This is a beautiful fiction with exciting paranormal aspects (ghosts, spells, and disappearing houses). The very practical FMC Florence “Rency” goes to visit her grandmother for the summer and they begin to look into their ancestry together. Alongside her unhinged cousin/BFF, Caro, in the spur of the moment, Rency decides to sign an unsigned marriage certificate from their great-great-grandmother Florence from 1929. Rency later meets and starts to get friendly with a handsome Handyman that helps out on the property. Deciding to take a step out of her comfort zone and take her cousin, Caro’s advice, to finally ask the handyman out Rency stumbles upon some very interesting information at her local library. From here Rency has some tough decisions to make that could end up costing her life! This cosmically charged read is perfect for spooky season! Definitely recommend reading I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Rency went through and was invested in how it would turn out for her.

I’ve read Michelle’s first two novellas and I loved her writing style since the beginning and her charming contemporary stories, but did I expected her to jump into this new genre?
Nope.
Am I disappointed? Don’t even think about it.
I loved it from the beginning! How Rency’s relationship with her grandma is, how close they are plus also her relationship with Caro they’re like sisters, always holding onto each other. And I have to mention Javier, the greenest flag ever, hope to read they’re love story sometime in the future. This book shows various family dinamics, ones better than other ones, let’s just say that. Also I love love Michelle love stories, they’re pure, sweet and healthy.

Henry and Rency understood each other and tried to protect eachother as well since they met.

Also, SUCH A PLOTWIST, can’t say more. Oh,oh,oh and I just wanna say one thing about the end, bra-vo. I was so scared the ending could left maybe a bit of sour taste, you know, not too sweet not too sad, but I like it. I really like that everything falls into the place nicely.

Nice one Michelle, like always.

🌟 Rating: 3.5

📝 The Vibe: Ghost-Whisperer meets romantic mystery; a sweet, cozy paranormal romance with stakes and heart.

💬 In a line: I don’t usually read paranormal, but this came highly recommended by a bookstagrammer I trust...and I was pleasantly surprised. It gave me more than expected: romance, family history, ghostly mystery, and choices that tug at the heart.

❤️‍🔥 Loved For:
The unique premise is that Rency finds a long-lost marriage license, and the past and present blur. Rency & Henry’s romance...Henry, a ghost between worlds, adds tension and sweetness. The setting & atmosphere: small town/grandmama’s home, mystery, and that subtle, eerie feel, especially the disappearing stone house in the woods.

⚠️ Heads-Up: No Language or Spice

✅ Read If You Like:
Ghostly/paranormal romance with emotional weight
Sweet love stories infused with mystery
Strong family/heritage ties in a cozy, small-town vibe
Fall or spooky season reads that aren’t too dark but still atmospheric

I wish I had a full 24 hours to binge read in one sitting, cuz I would have! I was obsessed with their story!!

While staying with her grandma during summer break, Rency - a high school history teacher, is excited to dig into their summer project… sorting through boxes and boxes of family history and creating their family story. A few days into her stay, her grandmother mentions a number for Rency to call to hire a handyman to repair odds and ends around the hundred year old house. Before she even had a chance to call - a handyman arrived, which she found herself quite entranced by him. Day after day she helped Henry the handyman with small jobs quickly falling for him. They clicked. But then, things started getting weird- especially finding an one hundred year old photo of Henry. Turns out, the man she loves is a ghost who’s cursed to live a life in the veil. Rency then devotes her time to find a way to rid the curse, despite how that may separate them for good.

YA feel, clean, and fun Fall read!

The Veil Between Us was such a well written story. I would take time to do my daily tasks & I could not stop thinking about this book and what was going to happen. I just had to finish it. I could not guess parts of this plot, I felt like it kept turning and twisting! Although this book wrapped up beautifully at the end, I selfishly just want more so I can stay in the world of these characters.

This book is about a young woman moving back home to help her grandmother sort through old family photos and history for the summer, but takes an unexpected twist when she decides to sign her name to an old family marriage certificate. For a woman who doesn't like to take chances, it's all she ends up doing the whole summer!

This was the perfect combination of sweet, cozy, and page-turning! Henry made for a swoony MMC. The set-up was unique and really fun. I adored that the FMC had relatives who supported her instead of her being on her own. The ghost cat was one of my favorite characters :)

I read this really quickly because I was having a great time and was quickly immersed in the world. I'm usually not really a 'spooky' reader but this one was so engaging that I'd recommend it both to people who like the idea of a ghost romance, and those who are on the fence. Michelle is a great writer and her character work is superb!.

This was a really lovely story. I went into it blind, having read the blurb awhile ago and forgotten all about it before I read it. So it was an enjoyable journey, discovering things as the author described them, not guessing things before they were unveiled. I was surprised, I didn’t know how it would turn out in the end, but it works and it’s a really sweet, happily ever after that just made me so happy! The FMC and MMC are wonderful together, and the main characters are all well fleshed out. The book is very well written, painting a picture and easy to get immersed in. It’s a feel good soft romance novel.

When I heard about the plot of this book, I knew I wanted to read it.

This book was so good and there were two nights I stayed up past 3am to read it (and finish it!) because I was so into it. It made me laugh, squeal a few times at things happening between the two main characters, and even cry a time or two.

I’ve been in a reading slump lately and this book really pulled me out of it because this was the quickest I’ve finished a book in months 😆

I wasn’t sure if this book was ending in a HEA, but I was rooting for one to happy the whole time. I didn’t know how the author could make it happen, but I had hope that it would happen.

I’d definitely recommend this book to someone who is into paranormal stories mixed into the regular world.

This beautiful romance novel between Rency and Henry felt like a warm blanket on a cool, fall evening.

Rency is a teacher on summer break helping her grandmother with her home. She meets and falls for the handsome handyman who happens to be a ghost. Their fated yet forbidden romance kept me turning the pages until the very end. (Wish it was longer because I fell in love with their story!!)

Henry and Rency’s story of love and self-sacrifice was devastatingly beautiful. My heart was broken and put back together again.

Love love LOVE this story. I know I’ll be reading it again.

I love a good spooky ghost romance, and this one was the perfect mix of sweet, mysterious, and heartfelt. The ghost rules in this world were such a fun touch and added a fresh twist to the story.

Rency, the FMC, is already deep into a passion project with her grandmother, building a family tree to preserve their history. Through that, you really get a sense of her roots and her connection to Harry, the charming ghost at the center of it all.

Caro is an absolute gem of a best friend and such a strong supporting character.

There’s no spice in this story, but it doesn’t need it. The emotion and atmosphere carry it beautifully.

First, let me say I am not a romance fan. That being said, this book grabbed me, and I couldn’t put it down. The author is masterful in creating a slowly building tension that takes you through to the climax. There were a few points throughout the book that didn’t compute in my brain, so if you tend to overanalyze like I do you might see them as well. However, go with the flow and focus on the relationship between Rency and Henry, because all will be revealed in the end. I loved this book, and I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next!

This was such a sweet, romantic story! I love that Rency is fighting being back so hard, but then just gets thrown into things headfirst. Caro is of course both a wonderful and horrible influence on her, and it's nice to watch her with her grandmother. I love the way she slowly realized the truth about Henry, but moreso the way they just fell for each other immediately, even though they both denied it.

This really tugs at the heart, and is so heartbreaking and great all at once. A very unique and powerful romance.

Idk why I’ve been on a romance kick recently because I’ve never read them before but honestly this one was pretty great. To be fair, I was more hooked on the paranormal-ness of the story than the actual romance itself, but that was an added bonus I guess haha.

It’s a 3.5 rounded to 4 stars because the characters were a bit on the same-same side and lacked serious flaws. Also there’s a bit of a lack of resolution at the end regarding the villain, but it definitely didn't ruin the ending either.

Harmless Ghostly And Sweet

There are a couple plot holes on the way to a creative take on the ghost romance but the story is otherwise well written. Henry is a spirit caught in a place between worlds by a curse in the 1920s on his wedding day. Rency is a high school teacher visiting her grandmother for the summer. They get linked into his curse when she impulsively signs her name on Henry’s wedding certificate on display at the historical society.

Rency and Henry form a sweet bond. It becomes a race against time to end the curse.

THIS WAS A SWEET AND CLEAN ROMANCE.

This was hauntingly beautiful and wonderfully creepy! Certain parts had goosebumps raising on my arms and others made me shed tears!
When Rency comes to help her grandmother after a stroke she has no idea that life is about to change in so many ways.
She falls for the handsome handyman Henry but all is not as it seems.
This was an absolute page turner and I was up late in the night finishing it to see if there would be a happy ending because at one point it seemed that wasn’t possible!
Highly recommend this one it was a great read and I loved the happy ending 💜

Between the Veil is a sweet, whimsical story, just right for the spooky season. Florence "Rency" Faber goes to visit her grandmother for the summer and she uses this time to help her go through her belongings and to discover some family history. What she discovers is that Henry, her grandmother's handsome neighbor, and the ghost in between the veil, hold a key to her heart and future. Captivating and lyrical, this story is a wonderful ghostly romance.
