Mil-spec work was kind of a pain, but Winnifred Gurry was happy to take it on because it helped fund her research on her own pet a humanoid clank-bot to learn multiple tasks and serve as her shop assistant. She never expected a metal construct to be the catalyst for change in her work with military liaison Major Dewar - or for her assistant to be commandeered.
When I downloaded the sample, I figured I could read it while cooking and then decide whether or not to buy.
The first chapter break came just in the nick of time, as I was so absorbed I did not notice that my rice was boiling. Another 15 seconds, and it would have boiled over.
I made the purchase and gobbled up each chapter as a reward for getting a few things done around the house. When I got to the end in the evening, I was moved emotionally to the point of not wanting to read anything else that evening.
The characters grabbed my sympathies from the beginning, the plot was interesting and moved at a good pace, and the ending just about broke my heart. I enjoyed it a lot, and would recommend it to anyone who likes steampunk.
Sweet bit of steam punk romance. Nice detail, fully realized characters. Definitely one to read and recommend. The ending was heart felt and touching. My only concern is the same as I have for much indie fiction - editing. Trask is a wordsmith and a genuinely good writer, but her sentences can get clunky, and there were a few times I had to re read a sentence to fully grasp the meaning. regardless, the book is WELL worth the price and time.
