The Bratva's Elite #1

Merciless Queen

Rate this book
Vanessa Volkov began her life as a pawn. Being the Pakhan’s daughter, she was conditioned to obey, to be who her father demanded she be. After his death, Vanessa spends the next two years rising to the role of Pakhan, her rightful place as the only heir. But a throne claimed after a king’s fall is unstable, making the queen vulnerable to other players—even ones not yet revealed.

Zeno Mancini isn’t fooled by the woman nicknamed the Merciless Queen. A ruler she may be, but monarchies are historically known to crumble under threat. Despite his vendetta against the Bratva, Zeno keeps Vanessa alive because there’s numerous ways for the Volkovs to pay for past transgressions. I do is the equivalent of checkmate, and the Merciless Queen is now left to the mercy of her new king.

Part 1

2,5 🌪🤔⭐️s

This was a packed out and extensive story.

A prequel would have been great as to be acquainted with some background, because there were so many unknown and unexplained aspects in the first part.

I was frustrated with the end, where there was no closure!!! Both mcs were mafia leaders, each one in a different country. So, how and where would they co-exist in the future as a husband and wife?
If this was a cliffhanger, there was no warning by the author. Moreover, the next part deals with another couple. 🤨

🔥Wicked Female Mob Boss - Female Dominant
🔥Rival Mafias
🔥TRUE Forced Marriage
🔥Slow Burn
🔥He Falls First

This book has been an absolute amazing introduction to the characters in the series.
I just wish there had been a prequel to introduce them, and this one told the complete story of Vanessa and Zeno.

The series:
This book was enough to make me want to know the backstory of everyone mentioned and almost buy in for the entire series.
Each character is appealing in their own way, and they make you want to get to know them.

Vanessa and Zeno:
These two are definitely one of those very harmonious couples who fit together completely.
Vanessa is a woman forged by her circumstances. She embodies a morally grey woman who is strong and determined. She is one hell of a "Merciless Queen." 👑
Zeno is grounded, focused, foresighted, protective, and also determined.
They collide together and become a force that is as destructive as it is healing.
They're joined by so much and so little, and it's up to you to take the journey with them and discover it.
🌶️There isn't a lot of spice, so don't go in this book for that, but the spice you do get is on point for the characters.

The story and writing:
Knowing the tropes, you might go in expecting specific things. Don't.
This surprised me at almost every turn.
There were many flashbacks, and I understand their value completely in terms of learning the past as it happened and the emotional impact of it, but also the trauma in it all. I think some of them were misplaced and unnecessary, but it wasn't much of a nuisance.

Now, this is also one of those stories where we need to learn so much about so many people before we get to the core of the VanessaZeno Story.
That is precisely why I wish there was a prequel telling us about the Elites and their childhood and Ivan and Ursin.
The book packs so much that at some point, I felt that:
- I don't have the complete story of Vanessa and Zeno
- I don't know what's next for Vanessa and Zeno, what's their future, how their story will continue
- I don't know what's next in the series and if I will get answers for all the plot lines opened in this one (Nero-Anastasia? Seraphina-L/A/???)

I did enjoy this; I look forward to more because I was left wanting more from every character.

Thanks to The Author Agency for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The first book in this series has so much promise! M.L. Philpitt always manages to push me out of my comfort zone—her characters are never perfect. They're flawed, haunted by their pasts, and incredibly stubborn, which makes for a compelling read. It’s also longer than what I usually go for (500+ pages, so it's a big one). However it was well balanced and never boring. The action was so good.

I loved having a strong female lead which not always well done in mafia book but here it was.
The smut isn't overdone—there's a scene around 20% in, and you’ll have to wait until 80% for another steamy one, but trust me, it’s worth it!

One thing I struggled with was Zeno and Vanessa’s complicated relationships with their fathers, like they still wanted to see their fathers differently that was they really were (massive aholes).

The second characters were also sooo good and I am already trying to figure out who will end with who (please please I want Nero and Anastasia)

There were also some extra length over the same discussion (Zeno and his revenge which clearly stopped making sense after kidnapping Vanessa, but he still clinked to it). Their game of cat and mouse was also a bit overdone Zeno (always pulling) and Vanessa (always pushing), which dragged out their discussions a bit too much.

On the plus side, it’s 100% safe—no cheating, no sharing, and no OW drama.
However please check TW for SA on page.

Of course I can't wait for the next book....
I received an ARC of this book and leave my honest review.

Wow! I absolutely loved this book. Amazing characters and wonderful plot. Very beautifully written and easy to read.

Vanessa Volkov is a strong and determined woman despite being her father’s pawn. After her father passed away, she became Pakhan as she is the only heir. Even though everyone calls her a “Merciless Queen”, she is still vulnerable.

Zeno Mancini wants Volkov’s to pay for the past. And forcing Vanessa to marry him seems like a perfect revenge. Only he didn’t expect to fall for her. I loved their chemistry and passion. They were made for each other.

Overall I loved this book very much. If you’re looking for a forced marriage, enemies to lovers then you’re going to love it.

A good mafia/bratva romance read.

Merciless Queen hooked me with boss lady of organized crime and a love interest that would challenge her. What I didn't expect was for the MMC to be a leader of his own. This story takes you on the journey of Vanessa taking over the family business and making a name for herself in a world that doesn't want her to lead. It has action, backstabbing and when the enemies turn to lovers it gets spicy. Vanessa and Zeno are not the only ones you are wanting more of the side characters come with baggage of their own which sets up the next book I think pretty well.

A nice read and a good start to the series.

This as an amazing book to introduce us to this series. Vanessa and Zeno set the mafia world on fire and the undeniable chemistry between them set the pages alight. I loved that Vanessa was the Pakhan of the Russian Bratva and she was a very strong and determined woman who did not need a man to make her feel complete and held her own with the men who were trying to bring her down. Zeno was just so alpha and very delicious who had plans for Vanessa but when these two meet the sparks are ricocheting off the walls. This was a very well written book that gave us insight in to two very different worlds and the angst and suspense will have you on the edge of your seat with anticipation. It was also a beautiful emotional read. M.L. Philpitt did this book justice and the writing was beautiful making you fall in love with all the characters and be a part of this wild, bloody ride. I am so excited for the next book which also promises to be explosive. Do yourself a favour and read this book you will not regret it, in fact you will be starving for more.

Vanessa a badass. She is hands down my favorite FMC I’ve read this year. Kneel to your queen 👸🏻 this slow burn was soooo good and worth it. This is a slow burn, hate to love, mafia romance where she is the female mob boss & he falls first! You do not want to miss this one! It does end on a cliffhanger but goes into Dimitri’s (part of Vanessa’s Elite circle) story which I’m VERY excited to read that next!! Thank you for giving me the chance to ARC read this 🫶🏻

Bratva vs Mafia

This story was everything I was hoping for and more. It had me glued to my kindle from start to finish. It was full of action and suspense. A superb enemies to lovers story.

Venessa Volkov has fought so hard to prove herself as Pakhan. She was always seen as a Pawn but now she’s the Merciless Queen. A force to be reckoned with.

Zeno Mancini, Capo of the Cosa Nostra, has waited years for his revenge. Now he plans on making the Volkov’s pay.

When these two MC’s meet it’s explosive. I don’t think either expected to feel a connection.

Will they fight it out or give into the feelings they have for one another?

First off, we love a strong Female lead! Within the first few chapters Vanessa grows from a meek character to an absolute baddie of a mafia boss. This is the first book I have read with a female mafia boss and let me tell you, it might be my new preference. Not only did she become a baddie but she also changed the way her group worked by ending their human trading system so Vanessa is a 10/10 for me.

Zeno and Vanessa have sparks from their very first glimpse of each other at a club and let those sparks fly but once Vanessa found out who Zeno was they quickly became enemies. While Zeno was only trying to protect his sister, he wasn’t expecting to fall in love with his target.

When I tell you that every plot twist in this book took me by surprise, I am not lying. I swear every other chapter had me hanging on the edge. If you’re into mafia romances, enemies to lovers, dominant women, and plot twists that will hit you in the face, please pick up this book!

I loved that the female took the lead as pakhan. Vanessa is a strong FMC. She has been through a lot in her life after being used as a pawn by father for years.

Zeno is out for revenge for his family, and Vanessa is his target since she is now pakhan following her father's death.

This is a brilliant dark mafia romance, and I really enjoyed it a lot. I'm looking forward to the next book as there are lots of parts of this story that are not finished.

As always, please check your triggers before starting.

Captivating, heart wrenching, suspenseful and emotional. I was pulled in by the first chapter to where I could hardly put it down. You have a strong female lead who works to prove herself to those around her while battling the demons that evade her mind. Your strong male character is seeking revenge and seeking to take down our female lead. Reading how they interact with one another, how they feed off one another and how they build from one another was every much emotional and powerful. I fell in love with their story and the sacrifices they made to protect the other. This was such a good read. It was bloody but beautiful.

Thank you for the ARC

The death of her father finally allowed Vanessa to live her life on her terms, and that was to prove that she had the determination and commitment to be the best Pakhan she could be but she had to overcome many threats, from within her organisation and externally. Zeno was a man determined to get revenge, and that included making Vanessa pay for her father's past sins.

I have recently discovered dark romances, and when I saw this book, I had to read it, I was not disappointed, I love the strong female character, who was determined to show she was capable of anything. Zeno was such a strong male character who was determined to achieve his goals. The development of their relationship was beautifully written, I loved how it wasn't rushed due to Vanessa's upbringing and how she brought up as a pawn, rarely shown love, and that was instrumental to whether her and Zeno could be together.

"Whoever claims there are five stages of grief is severely mistaken.
There's only one.
Anger.
Vicious, scorching ire that threatens to bring war along with it."

Well, that was a ride!
I finished almost 580 pages in one go, even stayed up till 2 am to do so.
And maybe it was cringey in a few places, but honestly, who can write a mafia romance without it being at least a little cringey?

I loved the bad b*tchification of Vanessa and how Zeno went from trying so hard to hate her, to panting after her like a desperate puppy.
Love me a desperate man 🤭
And the way her friends sneakily tried to get them together. #friendshipgoals
I was also highly annoyed by her uncle escaping every single time!
Just to go and cause chaos somewhere else.
I hope he gets cut into tiny lil pieces in the next book.

This book started off slow but as I continued reading I found myself more into it. There were several plot twists that had me getting to the end of the chapter and needing to know what happened next. I liked getting to read both the fmc and mmc’s point of views. I have read other books where the fmc and mmc are rival bosses and it feels very forced but their relationship was great and didn’t feel forced and they fit really well together. If you are looking for a book with a strong fmc and a really good plot and romance I highly recommend. Thank you so much to The Author Agency for sending me an arc of this book.

First read by this Author.

Merciless Queen is a woman who had to clean up the mess her Pakhan Father left when he died. Only a select few called the Elite are on her side, while she has to prove herself to the rest of the mafia that she is worthy to rule. She never grew up around love and only knows lies and deception. She works hard to prove herself, hiding her compassionate heart. But no matter what she does, there will still be those who oppose her in her own group.

I liked her as a character. She went through alot so I don't hold it against her to have issues with love and trust. However, She doesn't really come off as a strong powerful ruler. Only one scene depicted that and it was in the beginning when she was making a point. She continued her training to be a strong fighter but there was no instance where her physical growth was shown.
Sadly, it didn't come off as how the author I'm sure intended Vanessa to be. She came off as weak to me. There needed to be instances where she was actually challenged outside of her own people. I would like to see her as a leader. How she can take control of a situation and spill out orders. It was the Elite who did all the work for her.

Zeno and Vanessa had potential but their love story was a mess. He is supposed to be a one of the leaders after trying his hardest to be accepted but he literally does nothing. He freely leaves to Russia to try and be with Vanessa. Shouldn't he continue trying to prove to the Cosa Nostra he is worthy. Doesn't his side also have problems to solve. There was no layers to him. There was nothing BADASS about him. I was hoping to see that, once His people retrieved him from Vanessa's mansion.

I do like these characters but they were a little off putting. I'm all for the sexiness of him kneeling and all that when they're having their private moments but, outside of that Zeno was completely weak and useless. It felt like it was done on purpose to make Vanessa come out as strong. It ruined the image of Vanessa supposedly being a Badass, when her counterpart literally does nothing all day. Where is his strength and his people?? What are the Costa Nostra struggling with?? Who are their enemies??How on earth did he travel by himself with no guards around him as one of the heads?? Where is his moments of leadership and authority?? to see him as someone other than a normal average Joe? cause that what he practically ended up looking like.

I was more interested in the side characters!!! I loved them so much!! they were fun and intriguing. The Twins and Dimitri were more solid in who they were and where they are coming from then this couple. Even Seraphina, Nero and his mom. I loved Seraphina alot!!

I do love the idea of this book and the characters so I'm definitely going to read the next book in the series and also check out her previous books. I do hope She didnt write all her mmc's the same as Zeno because I will definitely drop all her books. In the beginning there was Erico and he seemed pretty masculine and oozed power so I have hope.

This is a series so I know there will be a 2nd book with another couple, however I was disappointment that this couple didn't give us closure.
Lastly, I was expecting Vanessa to finally meet His mother. I was waiting for it and I'm sure many readers will. It was disappointing.

I felt there wasn't much going on this book. In terms of what the plot is and their relationship.

I know Dimitris book will be heartbreaking especially what Katya went through so I'm hoping there will be more of solid characterizations individually and between them. I actually want Seraphinas book lol.

A chess piece meant to be played until I end up on another man’s board. That kind of future can burn for all I care.

A pretty girl with daggers beneath her dress.
A handsome boy with blood stained knees.
A fallen king who’s crown holds a lot of power…

Will she claim the crown, because it's her birthright…or will she need to fight.
Will the boy find the power to seek vengeance…and soak in the blood of his enemy?

The Merciless Queen also better learn from my methods because by the end of this, it’ll be her on her knees begging for my mercy.

Vanessa Volkov is now known as the Merciless Queen, the first female Pakhan of the Bratva. Being a female and only daughter, the title was not handed over easily and Vanessa had to prove to not only everyone within the Bratva but to herself that she should be the one wearing the crown to rule.

And nothing will stop her from ruling this empire and making the changes for the better. With her elite members at her back, Vanessa has everything within her fingertips and she is determined to hold her crown on her own, never allowing anyone to steal or take from her ever again…

Only one move changes the game and now the Merciless Queen is being forced to bow as a new king holds her precious pieces. While the king plays, Vanessa is learning the moves and holds her tricks close, knowing when to expose her chest for the perfect moment to strike back.

There is more than just a crown to grasp but a matter of playing with the black hearts as hidden emotions leave a fatal blow on both opponents.

She has the ability to destroy me even while I set out to destroy her.

Ooo Damn! Did this book blow me away and have me holding my breath!
Heck yessssss!

Firstly, I loved having a female mafia queen take over the Russian Bratva, this was the first time I read something like this happening and I was very excited to see how this was going to happen.

Vanessa was absolutely perfect for this role within the story, it touches on a previous series where we first saw her and now seeing her become the Merciless Queen which wasn't easy for her. I feel like you saw this character truly grow, Vanessa has a past that wasn’t all sweetness and being the only child of her father you can see the dynamics change as she gets older knowing what a woman of her position will be forced into. So, having this flip change happen means that Vanessa was able to have her own voice and my does she make it heard.

Then while Vanessa is proving herself that she is right for the role, you have a side story creeping through and suddenly there is someone else who isn’t stopping in the shadows anymore…Zeno.

The mystery man is the full package to lure Vanessa in…only she becomes aware of his real intentions quickly and can feel the knife in her back.

I really enjoyed reading this story, I loved how everything happened and even the full circle but still leaves enough room to bring more to the story. All the characters are amazing-you wouldn’t get on the wrong side of them for sure, but even amongst the darkness you can see the wholesome love that underlines this story. Everything makes sense, it’s not a rushed mafia who falls first and with easy wrap up at the end. You are pulled in until the very last page!

You can see where some things are going to happen with the side characters as they are going to come to life with their own words…

He’s challenging me in ways no one ever has before, and I despise him for it.

Review: 𝔐𝔢𝔯𝔠𝔦𝔩𝔢𝔰𝔰 𝔔𝔲𝔢𝔢𝔫 is my newest mafia romance OBSESSION! ML Philpitt blew my mind with this first book in the Bratva’s Elite series and if they all continue this way I will have a while new favorite mafia series! Vanessa Volkov is a Fierce FMC and in a refreshing twist is the new heir to the Bratva. I LOVED how ML Philpitt had a female mob boss as the FMC and found her POV to be both unique and challenging since she always had to be so on guard. The slow burn romance between her and Zeno was also perfection in this book and really allowed the emotions to shine through between both of them!

ML Philpitt did something a lot different in this book compared to her previous ones in terms of the SLOOW BURN romance. She gave the two MCs time to plot, fall and then choose to go after their HEA while also creating the perfect amount of tension between these two enemies. Vanessa and Zeno DO NOT start this book as friends but we do see some sparks fly between them upon first glance. I appreciated how the anticipation was built up between them and how the POV ping-ponged between the two as the tension racketed up in the initial meet-cute turned meet-hate. Vanessa was force of nature and I LOVED how she went after what she wanted and fought with everything to get it. Zeno was a conundrum of a mafia boss but also had a softer side that was nice to see…especially as he began fall for his sworn enemy!

𝔐𝔢𝔯𝔠𝔦𝔩𝔢𝔰𝔰 𝔔𝔲𝔢𝔢𝔫 was a mafia romance that absolutely sucker punched me but in the best ways! Zeno and Vanessa are almost perfect reflections of one another and I enjoyed seeing them go head to head to one up the other. I also DID not see the twist coming towards the end that pushed them back together for this final time. ML Philpitt really kept me hanging on the edge in this book while also quenching my need for a TRUE enemy to lovers romance. 𝔐𝔢𝔯𝔠𝔦𝔩𝔢𝔰𝔰 𝔔𝔲𝔢𝔢𝔫 was a phenomenal start to this new series set in the Fractured Ever Afters universe and I am looking forward to seeing old couples cameo as well as new couples fall!

Rating: 100+; 𝔐𝔢𝔯𝔠𝔦𝔩𝔢𝔰𝔰 𝔔𝔲𝔢𝔢𝔫 is my next mafia romance obsession and Zeno Mancini is a level 5 book boyfriend!

Merciless Queen by M. L. Philpitt is a dark and thrilling mafia romance that immerses readers in the world of power, betrayal, and dangerous alliances. The story revolves around Vanessa Volkov, the daughter of a notorious Pakhan who has spent her life obeying her father’s commands. After his death, Vanessa rises to claim the throne as the new Pakhan, determined to assert her dominance as the only rightful heir.

Vanessa is a strong and complex character who embodies resilience and ambition. Her journey to power is fraught with danger, as claiming the throne after her father’s fall leaves her vulnerable to the treacherous forces around her. She is nicknamed the “Merciless Queen,” and though she has earned her title, the weight of ruling the Bratva is heavy, and her throne is anything but secure.

Enter Zeno Mancini, a calculating and enigmatic figure who has his own vendetta against the Bratva. Zeno is not intimidated by Vanessa’s reputation or her power. In fact, he sees through her tough exterior and recognizes the vulnerabilities she tries to hide. His decision to keep her alive is not out of mercy but out of strategic intent. Zeno’s manipulation of Vanessa through their forced marriage—an “I do” that seals her fate—creates a tense and explosive dynamic between the two characters.

The chemistry between Vanessa and Zeno is electric, filled with tension and conflict. Their relationship is one of power struggles and unspoken desires, where both are trying to maintain control over the other. Zeno’s relentless pursuit of his goals and Vanessa’s determination to protect her legacy make for a riveting push-and-pull dynamic.

M. L. Philpitt weaves a gripping narrative filled with twists and unexpected turns. The combination of mafia politics, dangerous alliances, and emotional complexity keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Merciless Queen is a compelling story of survival, revenge, and the lengths people will go to maintain power, all wrapped in a dark and passionate romance.

Fans of mafia romance with strong, determined heroines and alpha male anti-heroes will find Merciless Queen to be an enthralling and addictive read. The intricate power plays and intense emotions between Vanessa and Zeno make this book a standout in the genre.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book. The last 2 mafia books SEVERELY disappointed me and when I first started reading I was almost like “hmm okay…let’s see what happens after we get through the world building…” and then chapter 2 was an unknown narrator and I thought “oh! Go on…” and then there seems like betrayal and then sh1t kicks off and I was sold.

This was a banger (as my 11 year old would say, that’s cool right?)! I fvcking LOVED Vanessa; she’s such a badass and reminds me of my own battle with being emotionally open with people. I loved her growth and journey. The choices she made at the end of the book nevvvvver would have happened at the beginning at I love that growth.

Zeno was a great morally grey MMC and Italian 🥵 he loves his family so much and is so witty. Yes please.

This is a slowwwwwwwwww burn. Which is funny to say since there’s a pretty spicy/BDSM-adjacent scene pretty early (killer scene both spicy and post-spicy btw). I just kept yelling “KISS” throughout until like 85%? 90%? I love a good slow burn and you could feel the tension between these two.

There’s good witty banter (and witty texting). There are good twists and betrayal plots…lots of kidnapping…

If you’re looking for a good mafia romance. Read this. If you’re looking for a darker romance vibe. Read this. If you’re looking for spice/sexual tension. Read this (this is a book with spice, not a spicy book. There are … 4 scenes plus lots of tension and a few make-outs if I’m counting correctly).

I loved it. Great read!

PS There is a definite need to read the TW’s.

Oh my goddddddnesssss. I cannot express how much I love Zeno and Vanessa. They have playful banter and unnerving chemistry. I was pulled into their story not only for the romance. But the importance of their families and the lives they were building.

Vanessa our Pakhan. A woman taking over a male only role. It's empowering and sad to see the struggles she has to face to take over the role that she was born to have. Hearing about how horrible her father was to her. Being a pawn for too long. We see her grow into the queen. Meeting her king and battling a war between the two. They're both strong and hard headed. Neither wanting to waiver. Her moment of submission was the sign that she trusted him. Fully. A feigning feeling for her considering her history.

Zeno our capo. Battling for a vow he made after watching his father die. Understandably wanting revenge after all that he'd been through. Just another victim of our fallen Pakhan. Grasping at the remaining legacy of the man who wronged his family. He goes after Vanessa, only to be stunned with the woman she is. Strong and fierce. Unwilling to bow to anyone. Can't blame him for falling to her mercy too.

This story was amazing. I just wish it didn't end so soon. So many things left unanswered. Now I have to wait for the next book?????? ROUGH. It's so good. Go readddd

If you want mafia romance, a badass FMC, a swoon worthy MMC, dark themes, tension, angst, and slowww burn to scorching spice... look no further than Merciless Queen by @mlphilpitt!

This book was sooo GOOD! I was so excited to get to know one of the most intriguing characters from books 5 and 6 of M.L. Philpitts's Fractured Ever After Series, and I am so happy that we get Vanessa Volkov's story.

The background and worldbuilding for this book were amazing, so if you are looking for an in depth story which follows a mafia heiress' rise to power and slowly tortures you in the best way to the much anticipated spice, this is the mafia romance for you.

I happily devoured this tension filled, rich story, which hooked me at Chapter Two, when the mysterious narrator appeared...and don't forget our morally grey Zeno...whew 🔥🥰

M.L. Philpitt yet again, and definitely not to my surprise, weaves a dangerous, political, consuming, and beautiful mafia romance filled with depth, intrigue, and absolutely delicious tension and yearning.

“you were never a broken queen. it was a stupid nickname. you’re too strong to be broken by anyone.”

i will admit, i wasn’t vanessa’s biggest fan when she was first introduced in the series this is a spin-off of. however, i was intrigued by the introduction of the bratva into this world. and the minute her story was announced and i saw the words “female boss” there was no going back. and this author delivered, regardless of this particular story deviating slightly from what i’ve come to expect from her given her last series. the fmc was not only a bratva pakhan, but we witnessed her rise to power. she earned the moniker that serves as the title of the book by her own merit. this was all show and no tell, which i really appreciated. and it’s true enemies to lovers, they do try to unalive each other, multiple times, even after they “get together”. i don’t think i’ve ever read about a more ruthless female lead. when readers ask for a morally gray fmc exactly like their favorite villains, this is she. which made it all the more emotional when her love interest fell first and became an absolute simp for her; and even more so the impact when she finally allowed herself to fell.

* i was sent an arc by the author agency in exchange for a honest review

Initially this was a difficult book for me to get into. I felt like I had started in the middle of the book. There is a lot of previous history since this book is a continuation of a different series. However, once I got past that and the story focuses on the transformation of Vanessa, I was hooked. Vanessa’s father was Pakhan and he ran a tight ship. He was cruel not just to his men but his own daughter so when he was killed no tears were shed. But, Vanessa was determined to be the first female Pakhan for the Bratva. The men fought against her and she had to do a lot of killing and managing to demand and secure the respect of her soldiers. Two years later she is running the business and although she is still searching for something a new person has changed the dynamics. Zeno has a great deal of anger and hatred for Vanessa and her father and although they are enemies they become tied by marriage. Their relationship was a slow burn there was constant push and pull but very little spice. I loved the tough, take no stuff leader that Vanessa was. As a reader I seek books where the female is not helpless and demure waiting to be rescued but the one kicking butts. Kudos to the author who wrote such an amazing female character.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Vanessa and Zeno. She has been raised all her life to obey and be a pawn for her father the Pakhan of the Volkov family. Now that he has passed away she is the rightful heir to the throne. Her father has made many enemies and a woman taking his place is certainly not the norm. For two years she has had to fight for her role and has earned herself the reputation as the Merciless Queen. She has never needed a man at her side to be who she is. Zeno is a man out for revenge and what better way to get that revenge than to become the queen's king? This book is so good. I love that Vanessa as a sassy bad butt who in her own right was tough as nails. Zeno however wants revenge and I don't think even he could see the sparks flying when these two meet. He is all alpha male and so yummy. I loved the banter these two had and I was turning the pages like crazy to see what was going to happen next. This is a book that you do not want to miss.

This book was very well written, but I was not a fan of the ending. The problem with this style of book is two leaders getting together and one of them always sacrificing their role for the other person. It's just not believable. No one in that position is voluntarily giving up their role as "head of an organization" for love. Initially, somewhere around the 30% mark I thought yes! the author did this successfully when someone was kidnapped and forced to give up their role. Sure there would be hatred and animosity, but that just furthers the enemies to lovers trope. I foresaw how the kidnappee could be integrated in to another organization to be useful, and say their cousin takes over back home so then they could still be somewhat involved. To some degree that could work. I was looking forward to this possibility because I have never read that before and often wonder how this style becomes believable. Anyways, the HEA that is in every other book happens in this one too and is *sigh* fine.

The start of a thrilling new Bratva series from M.L. Philpitt, where the Pakhan, a powerful role typically held by a man, is instead a formidable woman. Vanessa Volkov has battled tirelessly to claim her rightful position following her father's demise, only to face renewed threats from her father's adversaries, who seek to make her pay for his transgressions. Zeno Mancini, Capo of the Cosa Nostra had been planning his revenge for years and Vanessa was the lamb to his slaughter.

Merciless Queen was a fast-paced captivating read, filled with heart-stopping moments and explosive action that kept me hooked from start to finish with its enemies to lovers’ trope. The hero Zeno was fantastic, ruthless, and focused on one thing, but he hadn’t counted on the attraction he would feel for his enemy. I loved that Vanessa was a such a strong heroine but still showed a hint of vulnerability. The overall pacing and spice content were spot on, making this a fantastic start to the Bratva’s Elite series.

🖤🖤BOOK REVIEW🖤🖤

Merciless Queen: An Enemies to Lovers Mafia Romance is the first book in The Bratva's Elite series by M. L. Philpitt.

Vanessa Volkov (MFC) is called by everyone the “Merciless Queen.” She is strongly influenced by her father, she is strong and very focused woman. When her dad dies, she becomes the leader of Pakhan because she is her only heir.

Zeno Mancini (MMC) wants revenge against Vanessa. So he forces her to marry him. However, he did not expect to fall for her. This is a slow burn relationship. It builds throughout the storyline. They have chemistry, passion, and connection.

The supporting characters add flavor to the book. The first book clearly sets the storylines for the next books in the series. Lots of details.

This is the 1st story in The Bratva's Elite Series where we find Vanessa who takes over as Pakhan after her father dies while struggling for 2 years proving she’s the rightful heir and leader. The changes Vanessa makes bring them into the modern world and removes the undesirable businesses against the old guards wishes. Vanessa unexpectedly meets a handsome man, Zeno at a club and they spend an unforgettable night together where his hidden agenda is revealed which sets off circumstances that Vanessa will not see coming. When she shows kindness Zeno turns around and holds his past against her knowing his decisions are wrong on some level. These two leaders have each gained the upper hand in their journey with a forced marriage, revenge, hot steamy chemistry, along with fighting to stay on top!

This is the first in a new series, and this is Vanessa and Zeno’s story.
Vanessa is the daughter of a Pakhan, and when he passes, she has to fight to gain her rightful place as the first female Pakhan, which goes against everything engrained in a male dominated world. Vanessa becomes known as the “Merciless Queen,” and Zeno has a vendetta against the bratva, and he forces Vanessa to marry him.
This is a well written slow burn, fast paced story, with family dynamics, friendships, emotions, angst, drama, tension, vulnerability, danger, suspense, intrigue, forced marriage, vengeance, enemies / lovers, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, twisted, and unpredictable, addictive page tuner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

A mafia romance with a female mob boss? Count me in! Enemies to lovers, love to hate? Bring it on! Forced marriage where he falls first? Hell yes.

“Whoever claims there are five stages of grief is severely mistaken. There’s only one. Anger. Vicious, scorching ire that threatens to bring war along with it.” This is Vanessa in a nutshell. She’s been used as a pawn, a thing for her father to use to his benefit, but with his death, she does what she has to get revenge and take her rightful spot as Pakhan.

Zeno isn’t without his own trauma. He wants revenge, but once he meets Vanessa, it suddenly isn’t so cut and dried. He is desperate to keep her, to have her, and his desperation is hot! He does what he has to do with a little help from HER friends who recognize a change in her after he comes into their lives.

If you love a slow burn, this book is for you. The spice is minimal, but once we get there, it’s hot. Plus, there are some great side characters that I hope will play onto the next books.
