Rate this book
Fans of NARWHAL AND JELLY as well as PIZZA AND TACO, prepare to meet your new favorite  a pair of best friend school supplies! In the next adventure of this hilarious early-reader graphic novel series, Pencil and Eraser get lost outside the lines!

Pencil and Eraser are on their way to their first ever karate class—well, their person Stella is and they are tagging along. When Pencil gets a little too excited practicing her ninja moves, she falls right out of Stella’s backpack and lands on the sidewalk! And naturally, Eraser has no choice but to follow her.

Stranded all alone in the big wide world, these two buds will have to use their wits, charm, and of course their impressive ninja moves, to find the dojo and make it safely back into Stella’s backpack before class is over. Between squirrelly obstacles and flashy distractions, will the duo (ahem, Pencil) stay on the straight and narrow long enough to get where they belong? Or will they be doomed to draw outside the lines for good?

PENCIL & ERASER: LOST AND FROWN! is a delightful new graphic novel adventure. Pencil and Eraser are on their way to karate class with Stella when they fall out of her backpack. They are lost! Luckily, they have a map - if only they knew where they were. As they journey back to find Stella, they encounter some squirrels and an arcade for some extra adventure and fun.

What I loved: This is such a fantastic early graphic novel for budding independent readers. The illustrations are large and expressive with limited text. The text itself is large and easy to read, as well as easy to attribute to the characters who are speaking. The story itself is full of comedy and adventure with light tension as Pencil and Eraser find their way back to Stella.

There are plenty of funny moments from these charming characters - who are also opposites in emotional outlook (Pencil is an optimist and Eraser is a pessimist). The comedy, delightful characters, and a bit of plot tension keep readers hooked and turning the pages to read more. Joke breaks and other asides keep it entertaining throughout!

Final verdict: A delightful new installment, PENCIL & ERASER: LOST AND FROWN! is a funny and engaging early graphic novel perfect for early independent readers who love to laugh.

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Lost & Found is Book 2 in the Pencil & Eraser series. The story follows one perky Pencil and a grumpy Eraser as they find themselves separated from (their human owner) Stella’s backpack. Adventures ensue as the two friends find their way to the dojo where Stella takes her karate lessons. Text and illustrations support the characters’ dueling personalities, with plenty of physical humor and puns throughout. With one to four panels per page and short chapters, the book is readable in one sitting. Every chapter ends with a “Joke Break”: “What happens when two pencils fight? It ends in a draw!” The graphics have minimal backgrounds, and the final pages outline steps to draw them. Readers who enjoy other early graphic fiction series such as Narwhal & Jelly and Pizza & Taco will delight in this fun comic duo. Link to complete review: https://ysbookreviews.wordpress.com/2...

Children's graphic novel, early reader level. I enjoyed the first Pencil and Eraser book so I was excited to see the sequel. Pencil and Eraser go on an adventure to see their owner Stella at karate practice. Unfortunately on the way there, they fall out of Stella's backpack and have to make their own way to the dojo. This involves reading a map, an arcade detour, and using their ninja skills.

Pencil's cheeriness and Eraser's seriousness play well together, and the scene at the arcade cracked me up. A quick read, with four short chapters and joke breaks to end each one.

I LOVED this book! HUGE characters created out of small objects! The humor is on point and equally funny for kids and adults. My favorite part was when Eraser removed the arcade from the map while the ever-positive pencil was distracted by a butterfly. HILARIOUS. Chewy and Nibbles were another highlight, and I breathed a sigh of relief when Pencil escaped their gnawing. The "How to Draw" section at the end is a fabulous bonus. Well done, Jenny Alvarado! I have ordered the other two books in this series.

Graphic Novel
Pencil and Eraser are back. Readers see them get lost and have to find their way back to Stella at karate class. Readers journey with them as they get help reading the map, make a stop at the Arcade, and eventually find the dojo but still don't make it home.
Alvarado breaks up the chapters with jokes to add even more humor from these characters. I enjoy the contrast in their personalities and the way they have to work together.

In PENCIL & ERASER: LOST and FROWN!, Pencil and Eraser are excited about going to their first karate class—until Pencil’s ninja moves accidentally drop them from Emma’s backpack, forcing them to figure out how to make their way to the dojo and back into her backpack before the end of the class. In a series of adventures broken into easy to manage chapters, Eraser must rein in easily distracted Pencil as they follow a map to the dojo. Teamwork and friendship win out in the end in this short, simple text with clear illustrations that are perfect for building confidence in young readers. The expressive faces of the characters add to the narrative and humor. Fans of other early graphic novel comic duos like Pizza & Taco and Narwhal & Jelly will be drawn to this pair, too.
