Thorfinn’s detour to Greece has been itself derailed by a succession crisis. The Jomsvikings seek a new leader, and Thorfinn cannot keep his identity as the son of Thors secret for long. It seems the dream of paradise will have to be deferred until the end of one more war…
Since striking out from Iceland, Thorfinn’s crew keeps growing, adding the aspiring sailor Gudrid, a baby, a dog, and the vengeful tinker Hild, but they seems to be getting no closer to selling their cargo in Miklagard, much less making the trek west to Vinland. When the Jomsvikings realize this Thorfinn is the same peerless fighter they once fought against, he emerges against his will as a top candidate to lead the band. Floki, who wants to ensure his grandson wins the power struggle, sends the bloodthirsty Garm after Thorfinn. Before long, this leadership dispute threatens the peace of the entire Baltic Sea, drawing the attention of King Canute…
“We can’t help it… We can’t help it. That’s all I’ve been saying… …Since we reached the Baltic Sea…” Did you kiss the brick before you threw it straight into my face?
This book is Thorfinn’s past coming back to him in full-force. Poor thing just wants to live peacefully and nobody will leave him alone.
His rage with Floki? Way to challenge his beliefs about violence. I could feel that fire, his fury, through the paper.
There’s a lot of depth in this book with all the characters’ wishes, aspirations, dreams, fears, sense of duty..
I just feel so bad for Thorfinn, and the ending of this book made me sort of upset because we paused mid-fight. I need to know how he gets out of this!
On a lighter note, Gudrid being happy and blushing over Thorfinn saving her and him being so nonchalant about it was adorable.
It's alright. This arc isn't really grabbing me as much as the others. The stakes are there and the narrative direction and build up make sense, but the connection just isn't there for me.
I'm a little cooler on this volume than the previous 6, but most of it has to do with Garm. He feels like a pointless character. The overall plot arc and especially when the full cast are allowed to shine are some of the best moments.
Bonus points for making me gasp out loud and having some of the most breathtaking artwork in the series so far.
Still this is the first volume closer to a 4.5/5 than a 6/5 for me, but I think that speaks to the quality of the "Prologue" and Farm arcs more than anything negative about this volume.
Thorfinn now knows who orchestrated the killing of his father. But when he comes face to face with him he almost takes steps backwards in his peace journey. The jomsvikings has a small section of them that believe thorfinn should take the leadership role. But he has no want for it. But he and friends get pulled into violence they never asked for.
I am still enjoying this but it can be a bit too anime at times. Could also be very grim which felt like it was returning to earlier editions where it took itself a bit more seriously
