*Review based on an arc.*

((To be honest, I didn't read the synopsis of this manga from NetGalley's "Read Now" freebie selection. I saw girls on the front cover and thought it was yuri. It is nooooooot...))

This is, rather, a heterosexual harem manga - sorta - but it's very tame and ended up being so cute I quite enjoyed it!

The story is about a boy who attends a specific school to find a girl whose radio show he used to listen to religiously. In fact, he was her only listener, so they had many intimate conversations between just the two of them, and he feels there is unfinished business between them. Once at the school he meets the four girls who comprise the radio club. They all have unique voices, which they intend to use in their future careers. But he's not sure which of them is the girl he's looking for, because his memory of that particular voice has been lost to time. So he takes it upon himself to train the girls to perfection so they can attain their future career goals. He feels qualified to do this because of his background: his family is wealthy and every man of his lineage is, in his mind, without flaw.

I noticed in other reviews that people found the protagonist to be insufferable. He does brag a bit, especially in the beginning of the book, but he shows throughout the story that he has heart and is willing to degrade himself to help the girls out. He's more emotionally mature, I feel, than he lets on. I actually liked him a lot by the end of the manga. If anything rubbed me the wrong way, it's that a male character is coaching female characters to be their best selves. But it's a comedy and I don't think it's really that serious, especially given his failures throughout the story.

The art in this book is fantastic. The four girls all look very different so there's no confusing them. They each have a distinct personality and are easy to tell apart. And I'm finding myself really intrigued by the plot, even though it seems obvious which girl is the one he's truly looking for.

I enjoyed reading this and I would read more of the series. I think it would be a fun anime.

[Thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for an advance copy of this manga in exchange for an unbiased review.]

A boy goes to a school to find a girl whose music program he used to enjoy before she disappeared on him. In so doing, he encounters a quartet of cute girls who are all pursuing vocal careers. A mystery is afoot!

While pretty much cut from the most basic of cloth - the shy one, the tsundere, the ditzy one, the forward one - the girls in this story are at least easy to pick out from a visual perspective and they are certainly attractive for the target audience.

And that’s, unfortunately, where my compliments for this series will grind to a halt.

I don’t hate harem stories; I loved the mystery aspect of Quintessential Quintuplets, which feels most like this one, and it had some good moments. Tying the Knot With An Amagami Sister is inconsistent but has just killed some of its story arcs. I even enjoyed portions of We Never Learn.

For as much as we complain about the boring potato self-insert males that dominate these stories, they’re a thousand times more tolerable than Yamabuki, who starts obnoxious and remains obnoxious.

He busts in talking about how great he is and how much money he makes and basically just strong arms the girls into letting him realize their hopes and dreams because he thinks they suck. His most defining characteristic is how his bowel movements are timed. Not even joking.

Oh, it’s framed differently, but you can tell that the angle here is how completely not capable these poor girls would be without this superhero swooping in to save the day. Except he’s a jerk.

It takes a lot of gumption to make your females the most interesting characters and then give all your agency to the uncharismatic bozo who will bounce off them in various romantic entanglements until the big reveal.

And the vague reality of this series makes exactly no sense. This mystery girl ran a broadcast, but they talked? It didn’t appear to be a phone-in show, so what the heck was it? How did they ever share words? It’s just pure nonsense and a mystery that has no reason to be ongoing except it will make the series last longer.

Also, I absolutely refuse to believe that any high school in Japan has outfits like that for its female students. This is just adolescent male fantasy that’s as erudite as a watercress salad and about as filling. There’s really nothing here that makes it worth sticking around to see if it gets better in a volume or two.

2.5 stars - a very generous half star because the girls deserve better. But I wouldn’t ever tune in for a second volume of this without a major tune up.

Special thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a digital copy in exchange for an honest review

What do you get when you mix a sasaeng with 4 girls working towards voice careers? It's whatever this story was lol.

Ariso was insufferable. He was obnoxious, full of himself, and was making weird choices all for the sake of a girl he's never seen or met.

The girls tolerated him, and I understand this was a harem story, but it would have been so much better if it was just about them and Ariso didn't exist at all.

The art was okay. It was easy to tell the girls apart, but honestly I was just cringing with every page of this I read

Arisu Yamabuki, second year high school student and scion of Yamabuki Group, has been brought up to believe in his own excellence (99% perfect). But he won’t be completely perfect until he clears the biggest mistake of his life: he accidentally confessed to his favourite online radio host, Apollo. He needs to find the original recording and destroy it.

He’s tracked her down to an all girls school, which luckily has combined with his all boys school. With a single-minded focus, ignoring all social norms, he goes after the voice and finds it in a broadcasting club. There are four girls there determined to make a living with voice work. Rikka Inohana, who wants to be a singer, Shinobi Uzuki, who wants to be a professional announcer, Nene Himekawa, who wants to be a voice artist, and Iko Kirino, who wants to be a vtuber.

Problem is, they all sound a bit like Apollo, and all of them have some of her mannerisms. When he asks if one of them is Apollo, they deny it, but readers are instantly revealed that one of them is lying. We just don’t know who.

To find out the truth, Arisu joins the broadcasting club. He soon learns that the girls aren’t as good as they—and their fan clubs—claim to be, and sets out to make them as perfect as he is. It doesn’t go well.

This was a good start to a series, fun with a mystery element, but it had a kind of negative, sniding undertone at first that took a bit to change to more positive. Arisu was annoying with his conceited personality, but he was also earnest, which saved a lot. The girls were ok, but none of them rose to be my favourite. The ending hints of a happily ever after for Arisu and Apollo, but we don’t learn her identity yet. Art was good. I’d read more.

I received an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.

I've read a lot of manga in recent weeks and can easily say this has been my least favourite my a country mile.

Personally, I really hate the term 'the ick', but baybee that's what reading this gave me.

From the total arsehole protagonist who gets somewhat called on his shit, but ultimately is shown that his Great Man™ attitude and raison d'être for mansplaining are proven to be successful, to the incredibly uncomfy sexualised portrayal of schoolgirls this comic made me incredibly uncomfortable.

I understand that there's an element of fantasy and echo melododrama and the in world manga referenced in this story, but to my autistic arse there's nothing that marks this as being clearly a 'dark romance' aka knowingly exploring elements that would be problematic in real life. This seems to be more in the Fifty Shades of 'toxic masculinity (complimentary)', which is gross.

There's a chance I'm missing something, but I don't think that someone being shown to be a buffoon, but ultimately right about everything is the same as 'dark' or critical. It's like the classic issue of Captain Mal Reynolds from Firefly being an anti-hero, but ultimately framed as a hero and good guy, despite being a horrifying misogynistic wanker.

Some of the interactions were amusing, but I really didn't have fun with this at all.

"it never hurts to have a rich friend or two"

the plot of the 4 girls all having similar aspirations that go down different paths and a man trying to find which one has kept him company for years is great, but the fan service, the most mansplaining egotistical main character, and the repetition (there's a whole page of lines already mentioned not even a chapter ago) really killed it

I went into Tune In to the Midnight Heart intrigued by its premise - mystery, livestreaming, and the search for a long-lost voice? Sounds promising! Unfortunately, the execution left me feeling more frustrated than entertained.

The story follows Arisu, a arrogant high school student whose only comfort in life once came from the soothing voice of an online streamer known as “Apollo.” But one day, Apollo’s broadcasts abruptly stopped, leaving Arisu desperate for answers. Years later, he’s determined to track down the girl behind the voice, convinced that she must be a student at a particular high school. His plan? Transfer in, infiltrate the broadcasting club, and uncover Apollo’s true identity. Simple enough: except Apollo refuses to reveal herself, and Arisu is left with four possible candidates, none of whom have any patience for his pushy and entitled attitude.

Now, here’s where things fell apart for me. From the start, Arisu is an incredibly unlikable protagonist. He’s obsessive, self-centered, and completely tone-deaf to how unsettling his actions are. Changing schools just to hunt down a stranger? Forcing every girl in the club to say “I love you” so he can analyze their voices? Stalking tendencies dialed up to eleven? Yeah... not exactly the charming, determined lead I was hoping for. His wealth and arrogance only add to the problem, as he believes he can buy his way into the club’s good graces without considering their feelings or ambitions.

The pacing and storytelling didn’t help either. The narrative felt scattered and hard to follow, jumping between moments without clear direction or buildup. While the concept had potential, the execution left me more confused than invested. It was difficult to connect with the characters when the plot seemed to lack cohesion, and at times, I wasn’t even sure what the main focus was supposed to be - was it really a mystery? A slice-of-life drama? A character-driven story? It never fully committed to any of them.

That said, there were a couple of elements I did appreciate. The end-of-volume explanations about Japanese words, phrases, and cultural nuances were a nice touch, adding helpful context that might otherwise be lost in translation. It’s always great when a manga provides deeper insight into language and culture, and I genuinely appreciated that effort. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to redeem the overall reading experience for me.

At the end of the day, "Tune In to the Midnight Heart" had an interesting premise but was ultimately a frustrating read. Between an off-putting main character and a messy, unfocused narrative, I just couldn’t find enough to enjoy. I can’t see myself continuing with this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read this volume.

3.5.

First off I enjoyed this more than I thought. My experience with manga harem stories is from like 200 versions of Tenchi Muyo, Love Hina, etc. Quirky humorous stories that are usually lighthearted and kinda middle of the pack manga. I felt Midnight fell into this category. It was enjoyable. I snorted quite a few times with laughter and I’m looking forward to the next book, but it’s not a full captivation where I absolutely have to get my hands on the next one immediately.

What I did like about this is our Mail main character is absolutely a trip. He has such a strange character with no filter and a skewed view of himself as perfect, but he also does have qualities and confidence beyond any normal teenager. At first, I honestly thought this was a bit misogynistic, but in the lit shepherds of the book, the girls absolutely start calling out his nonsense for what it is and I appreciate that. Every time he starts being absurd, they put him in his place leaving him baffled as he seems unable to understand how he can be anything other than perfect. The fact that he does kinda start learning he’s not doing everything the right way was appreciated. And this is just early days in the series AND it’s a comedy. So the fact that he’s kind of book smart but social aptitude idiot makes most of the humor here. I would recommend for people that enjoy this type of quirky harem style manga.

Finally a note on the translation. I have a masters in Japanese and Japanese culture studies but even I really appreciate when publishers take time to note cultural or linguistic points that just translations alone don’t give background on. I think this book did a solid job of that. I recently read another book published by the same publisher that did not have that, and likely the translator with someone different but in that case, it was absolutely awful and I ended up giving the book one star. If I was reading this book on translation quality alone, I would give it five.

Thanks to Netgally for the ARC.

Thank you to the author, Kodansha, and Netgalley for an opportunity to read an ARC for the first volume of the English release with this manga in exchange for an honest review.

Did you ever watch the Disney Channel movie Radio Rebel when you were younger? Did you read/watch The Quintessential Quintuplets? Tune in to the Midnight is what happens when you take the radio broadcasting element of Radio Rebel and the "MC is seeking the identity of someone they knew when they were younger" element of Quintessential Quintuplets.

The first volume follows the aftermath of two schools merging to become a co-ed high school. Arisu Yamabuki, one of the wealthier students at the school, finds himself entangled into the lives of four female students who are a part of the broadcasting club. He's convinced that one of the girls is the person behind his favorite radio show, Midnight Heart Tune, and takes it upon himself to help the girls with their dreams while figuring out who among them is the radio host that he pins over.

This first volume is a pretty solid start to the series. Arisu is introduced as an arrogant and overconfident male character, intended to be unlikable with a whole series to focus on his development. In these initial chapters, I enjoyed seeing that behind his extroverted personality, he can be considerate towards others and would go above and beyond to help those he cares for. As for the four female leads (Nene, Shinobu, Iko, and Rikka), I'm hoping to see future chapters develop their characterization since I don't feel particularly attached to any of them yet.

Outside of the characters, I do enjoy that there's no fan service (so far) and how the romance is going for a true slow burn. Definitely recommend this series if you're looking for a romance manga with a reverse harem, no spice, and an insight into fields related to voice entertainment.

the story follows arisu - a rich kid who sets out to uncover the identity of a mysterious girl known as "apollo". captivated by her voice during her live streams, he is determined to find her. his search takes him to his newly co-ed high school’s broadcasting club, where he suspects she might be hiding.

the premise is very intriguing and i was excited to embark on the journey of finding the long-lost voice. however, from the start i was caught off guard by the unlikeable protagonist. he's extremely self-centered and obsessive, and his behavior was kind of concerning at times - such as transferring schools solely to track down a person he's never even seen and constantly overanalyzing the girls's voices. his arrogance was absolutely insufferable. truly a walking red flag. 🚩🚩
maybe at the end of the book I saw a SLIGHT change but still, he needs to get a fucking grip lol

the story jumped between some moments making it hard to follow at times.
i couldn't really connect to any of the characters, but i'd like to see how they develop in the next volumes.

the art was really good. all 4 girls looked completely different, and i had no problems telling them apart.

the premise was great, but the execution of the story was slightly disappointing.
even though i had a few issues with this book, the plot was intriguing, and i'd consider reading the next volumes.

Tune In to the Midnight Heart
-May 6
-Volume 2 July, Volume 3 September
-netgalley/kodansha opportunity to read

So... Compared to other eARCs I've read recently this one I didn't dislike but I also wasn't oh I want the next volume right this moment type feeling. Personally, it would fall in the category of reading in between series I'm waiting to pickup/release. Each character did bring something to the table and not feel like it was the same personality over and over, which is nice. I do feel like Arisu already has a feeling who Apollo is, but I get the feeling that all 4 will fall for him at some point- has a harem feeling. As the series progresses, it seems we'll learn more about all 5 and probably some flashbacks to the past to get more of a backstory especially for Arisu and Apollo. I'm curious if it will do Apollo's point of view at some point, even just a small portion. If we didn't get some details of Arisu and Apollo communication before Apollo stops broadcasting, you could feel Arisu is kinda stalker'ish as his mission is to find her which lasts years. His classmates seem to be aware of his desire to find the voice too, which means he is pretty open about it.

Would I continue? Potentially, other series would take priority over this one as of volume 1. I would give volume 2 a go and see if it changes my mind.

Summary:
Arisu found comfort in listening to the voice of Apollo. However, one day Apollo decided to stop with their streams. Arisu was determined to find the person behind the voice and ended up enrolling in a high school where he believes she might be attending. During an announcement he hears what he believes is Apollo’s voice and bolts to the broadcasting room to find there are four girls who could potentially be Apollo. All 4 have dreams, their voices are slightly similar with varying personalities -the real Apollo is not revealing themselves so easily. Arisu asks to join the broadcasting club, but he would be of no purpose until he proposes to buy better equipment for them. Now all Arisu has to do is learn about each one and find Apollo. Easy right?

This feels like it would be better animated, just due to the pacing. I overall enjoy the premise of the story, however our MMC is very all over the place and it tends to feel hard to follow. I wish that we got a tad more information and background on what was going on, and that we focused on one of the girls at a time. This book would be a good "pilot" showing what he was doing and why, while giving us a brief sneak peek to what was going to come.

what i was hoping from this volume was that we would get some back story on our MMC and the group of FMCs and then continue to build on that. Instead i felt a tad whiplashed from the constant change in interactions and where we were in the story.

Id love to see this animated in the same style and humor as a show like Dan Da Dan. I will pick up volume two in hops that this was more of a starter to the story and that we will get better pacing and character development.

A huge thank you to NetGalley, Kodansha Comics, and Masakuni Igarashi for providing me with an ARC of Tune In to the Midnight Heart 1 in exchange for my honest review.

Tune In to the Midnight Heart 1 is a charming harem-style romcom manga that follows Arisu as he embarks on a quest to find the voice of a mysterious girl he once listened to during her live streams, known only by the name “Apollo.” Set in a newly co-ed high school, Arisu’s investigation leads him to the school’s Broadcasting Club, which he believes “Apollo” may be a part of.

This manga is a delightful mix of sweetness and humor, with moments that are both endearing and funny. The artwork perfectly complements the lighthearted tone of the story, bringing the characters and their interactions to life in an engaging way. I found the blend of romance and comedy to be quite refreshing, and I’m eager to see how the story unfolds in the next installment.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tune in to the midnight heart, the story begins with a shy girl finding her voice through late-night radio and she made an unexpected friend with it aswel. The mmc listens to her late-night radio show until she no longer comes online at midnight.

The mmc makes it his mission to find the girl. At his school there is a group of 4 girls that all wanna do something voice related. He is destined to find out which one of them is the girl ''Apollo'' from the midnight radio show. He develops friendships with all of the 4 girls so he can continue his search for Apollo.

The characters were loveable and the art was pretty in this manga. I really liked how easy it was to tell the girls apart. They did a nice job with that!

I loved this manga and think it is a promising start to a new series. I would definitely pick up the second one if i had the chance.

Furin High School has finally become co-ed, merging the Furin Girls and Boys high schools into one. Arisu Yamabuki finds this to be a boon in his favor since he is looking for a specific voice from the girls of his school. In middle school, every night he listened to a radio show podcast ran by a girl that called herself “Apollo”. However, three years ago she stopped broadcasting and deleted all her shows off the internet entirely, leaving behind not a trace. Yamabuki must find this voice within the crowds so that he may finally reveal something to her.

This is a cute high school harem-style story about a boy who used to listen to a young girl's call-in radio show. He's on a mission to find the girl after her show went dark a few years ago. His search has brought him to a newly co-ed high school where four girls make up the radio broadcast club. The boy is certain that one of them is the girl he fell in love with, but the problem is that they each exhibit qualities that remind him of her. It's a very typically cute story. I find the male lead to be rather annoying and his behaviour is often too cringey for me, but the story is a cute one and I wouldn't be surprised to see it become an anime or adapted as a Jdrama one day.

When our main character was younger, he would stay up late listening to a girl's radio show and chatting with her. One night, he confessed his feelings—and just like that, she stopped doing the show. Now, years later, he’s determined to find this mysterious girl. The only clue he has? Her voice.

He thinks he may have found her, but there’s a catch: all the girls in the school’s broadcasting club sound a lot like her. So, he makes it his mission to help each of them succeed in hopes of discovering which one is truly the girl from his past.

This story has a unique and heartfelt premise that blends mystery, romance, and personal growth. It's a fun journey watching him navigate his feelings and support the club—all while chasing the memory of a voice that once meant everything to him.

This is a fun school life manga story. Arisu is a perfectionist and an isolated teenager. He is isolated because of his tendency to compare himself with others and the others always come up wanting.

He wants to find the person who has encouraged him through her livestream broadcasts. He has identified the school where this mysterious person attends but he needs to find her.

He hears the voice during a school broadcast and narrows the possibility down to the four female members of the broadcasting club. And the fun begins as he becomes the only boy to join the club and hunt the voice of his inspiration.

Lots of humour and quirkiness. Copy provided via Netgalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

I found this start to a manga series really cute, but a bit too over the top for me. I like the overall premise with Arisu trying to locate Apollo and found his reminiscing about their conversations really heartfelt, but then his reasoning for wanting to locate her kind of ruins that. His attitude towards life and his place in his family is just a bit much, but I do like the setup so far of his interactions with the girls in the broadcasting club and getting to know who they actually are a good progression and very authentic. It's cute and a bit goofy and I hope as it continues it gets a little deeper into the more heartfelt matter as their relationships develop.

DNF 22%. In this graphic novel, we have an elite snob at a boy’s school that’s going to be combined with a girl’s school to make a coed school looking for a very specific girl. This is a girl he only knows by voice. We are introduced to this character when he gets up to introduce himself and tells everyone about how perfect he is. He then demanded that the entire class of girls say I Love You. There is too much chauvinism and stupid stuff in this book for me to continue. There is one girl that does approach him in a manic pixie type of way. It’s not entertaining or endearing. It’s just annoying.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Arisu found an online broadcaster, Apollo, who he instantly connected with. Years passed and Apollo stopped broadcasting. But Arisu still seeks her perfect voice everywhere. When the local girls high school conjoins with his and he meets a pro group of broadcasters, he feels he finally has a chance to hear her voice again. This story is refreshing and funny & I can’t wait to read the next volume.

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha for providing me with a free digital copy of this manga in exchange for my honest review

There is a crazy range of reviews concerning this series, fortunately I never look at them before reading a book. Frankly I think the story is great. Four girls all looking to get into voice careers and a guy who is looking for a girl whom he has only heard on a broadcast. Sure the guy is obnoxious, loud and over the top but he is also honest so at least you can respect that. It is fun witnessing his interactions with the group and individually as he helps each girl perfect their chosen career. I totally picked this up on a chance and am hooked so bring on the next volume already!

I enjoyed this first volume. Arisu is someone who found solace in a mysterious blogger. He only knows them by their voice. His encounter with the audio club starts him onto a path to help the various members to achieve their dream and hopefully, for him to find his shining light.

I can't wait to see who is the person and how he continues to help the club.

Thank you NetGalley for the e-Arc and this is my honest opinion.

What a cute story. Arisu is looking for the voice of the girl he's been in love with since middle school. Apollo is keeping her identity secret at their ne coed high school! At first I was annoyed by Arisu but once I caught on to his pinning over this voice I started to like him. I am excited to read the next volume to see who actually is our Apollo!

This book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This so far is a wholesome harem manga. It really gives me Quintessential Quintuplets vibes, so if you like that series, you'll def like this one too. The art is on point and it was a fun read. I will definitely pick up the next volume when it comes out.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I did not imagine myself ever DNFing a manga because they are quite easy to read, but alas, this was too cringe. The main protagonist is incredibly annoying - which I guess it's always the case with harem mangas, but this time around I just couldn't stand him at all.

If only this manga was a standalone and I could flip to the last few pages! As much as I was curious about which of the female protagonists was Apollo, the mysterious voice of the podcast, I couldn’t read any more pages with the insufferable Arise and his antics. (DNF - 40% / pg 80).
