The Last Rhee Witch #2

The Last Rhee Witch and the Nine-Tailed Fox

Rate this book
This sequel to The Last Rhee Witch is packed with creatures straight out of Korean folklore. Who's ready for winter camp alongside a gumiho, a dokkaebi, and several witches?

A true friendship survives the test of time. But what about surviving a nine-tailed fox?

Last summer, Ronnie Miller's world turned upside down. She'd never believed in ghosts, or witches, or magic—until her time at Camp Foster, where she learned she was a witch. Magic was real. And some of it wanted to kill her.

Now back at Camp Foster for winter break, Ronnie and her friends Jack, Olivia, and Sam can't wait to enjoy all that winter camp has to offer. They're excited to be back together, enjoying camp without worrying about mysterious forces that want to kill them. But when campers begin inexplicably falling ill, Ronnie and friends suspect the supernatural is at play.

A gumiho—a nine-tailed fox spirit who feeds on people's life energy—is stalking the grounds at Camp Foster. And she's hungry.

The perfect book for fans of Claribel A. Ortega and Graci Kim. Join Ronnie and her friends as they unravel the mystery of the gumiho and discover the true meaning of friendship.

Jenna Lee-Yun

Jenna was a voracious reader as a child and adolescent but found there were never enough books to read. Moreover, there were no books featuring protagonists who looked like her.

Now, Jenna continues to read as much as she can and finds there is never enough time to get ahead of her TBR pile. She is overjoyed to see so much more diversity (including Asian-American protagonists) in children's books than she could have imagined as a young reader!

Jenna resides in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, son, daughter, and mini-goldendoodle. She loves nothing more than writing middle-grade and young adult novels with a large cup of coffee. Jenna is represented by Emily Forney at BookEnds Literary Agency. THE LAST RHEE WITCH is her debut novel.

The incredible Jenna Lee-Yun has done it again with The Last Rhee Witch and the Nine-Tailed Fox—a stunning mix of heart, heritage, and high-stakes magic that had me completely hooked from page 1. Returning to Camp Foster in the middle of a snow-covered winter felt like coming home (to fresh cookies and hot cocoa)! Ronnie’s impossible choice between saving her friends or holding on to her memories of her mom hit me so hard, and the gumiho was the perfect blend of eerie, beautiful, and unforgettable. The ending is particularly inspired. I loved how Lee-Yun weaves in grief, friendship, humor, and identity so seamlessly. It’s everything I want in a fantasy—adventurous, emotional, beautifully written. I never want to leave Camp Foster!!!

I adore all of Jenna Lee-Yun's books, and this one is such a wonderful story filled with magic, mystery, danger, and first crushes. Readers are going to LOVE being back at Camp Foster, this time surrounded by fresh powdery snow, icicle-laden trees, and a hungry gumiho.

I was very lucky to read an early version of this book and can't wait to read it again! Full review to come 🦊❄️

Are you ready to return to Camp Foster?

In this incredible follow-up to the first book in this series, Jenna Lee Yun draws us deeper into the world of witches and Korean folklore with the gumiho.

What I love most about both of Jenna’s books is how real and relatable Ronnie is as a character. She’s not perfect. She makes mistakes, takes on too much. Feels so incredibly strongly (and has the worrying tendency to throw herself headfirst into shenanigans that would have even the most of seasoned witches—get it, “seasoned”, since spell books are cookbooks?! 😂—fearful.)

Aside from Ronnie, we also have an incredible cast of supporting characters who feel just as real. Jack, with his K-pop hair and bottomless stomach. Olivia, with her humongous wardrobe and tiny backpacks. Sam (who in my opinion is the sweetest cinnamon roll to ever cinnamon roll and I would happily read a whole book from his POV), who is trying to learn what it means to be Dokkaebi. To be witch. To be both, and neither, and everything in between.

This book let us return to the incredible world of Camp Foster, but it also breathed life to these characters in a way that made me want to hug them all and refuse to send them to camp lest they become entangled in yet another misadventure that will definitely have the witchy aunties turning grey!

Most importantly, this book teaches you that sometimes, being yourself is its own special kind of magic. Even when it’s scary. The good, the bad, the perfect, the imperfect, and everything in between. (And that when we make assumptions, we hurt more than we help.)

If you haven’t already, please be sure to order a copy of The Last Rhee Witch and the Nine Tailed Fox—this is one camp adventure you won’t want to miss out on!

Thank you Jenna for sharing Ronnie and Camp Foster with us, and thank you so much for sending me a copy of your second book. ❤️

This is an interesting book. I love that once again everyone is back at camp, and once again they are being faced with another mystical creature. I think that there are some very interesting emotional concepts dealt with in this book such as Ronnie still dealing with the loss of her mom. Oliva dealing with fear. Sam still trying to figure out how to master his powers and respect those around him who aren’t magical when using his abilities, and Jack trying to figure out where he fits in with his magical friends. That each person has their own story line and issues they are trying to work through I feel really adds to the book. I also enjoyed the added nine tail fox who plagues the students throughout this book. How Ronnie is able to bring everything together is masterfully done. I think readers are going to be swept away by this book and find themes that they can relate to.
Thank you to Disney Publishing Worldwide and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this title.

I so enjoyed returning to the magical world and endearing characters created by author Jenna Lee-Yun! Each of the four friends has an inner demon in this book, and each must face it to survive the nine-tailed fox and save their friendship. Readers will relate to Ronnie's feeling left out and focusing more on recording the moment than experiencing it. They'll also enjoy unraveling the mystery of the nine-tailed fox and the suspense that builds as Ronnie and friends work to defeat it. Finishing this book was bittersweet as the ending was extremely satisfying yet left me hungry for more stories to follow it! I look forward to reading future books by this author and getting my hands on a physical copy of this one once it's released in May!

I couldn't wait to return to Camp Foster for its winter session, and The Last Rhee Witch and the Nine-Tailed Fox did not disappoint! At this center of this story is a mystery that had me hooked: Ronnie's friends and mentors are getting frozen one by one, and she needs to figure out what's going on before it's too late to save them. Everyone at Camp Foster is keeping secrets, including Ronnie, and the way each secret is revealed is masterful.

Woven throughout the story are themes of friendship, found family, mythology, and what it means to remember and be remembered. I alternated between laughing at the clever humor and tearing up at the scenes between Ronnie and--wait, no spoilers! Just check out this gem of a novel :)

Great read. Had me flipping the pages quickly to find out what happened next. My students were a big fan of the first one and I know they’ll enjoy this one as much as I did!

Imagine an impossible choice: decide between saving your friends or your only memories of the beloved mother you’ve lost. How I gasped! The meaning of remembering, the changing nature of grief, and the energy that connects us all is at the heart of this action-packed sequel to Jenna Lee-Yun phenomenal fantasy debut THE LAST RHEE WITCH. Book 2 starts with a fantastic recap of the first story (I will try to leave spoilers out here!) perfectly woven into our return to Camp Foster, only this time for a week of winter fun. Ronnie is excited to see her friends and practice magic, but things go sideways very quickly as the gumiho—the nine-tailed fox—starts to cause trouble by taking people’s gi and leaving them frozen. Gumi wants more life energy and memories to sustain her and challenges Ronnie with that impossible choice of sacrificing her remembering bracelets in order to save her friends. I absolutely LOVE the way Jenna Lee-Yun writes magic and there is so much history, mythology, and cultural discussion here that the world-building is as exciting as the adventure. Plus there is fantastic camp drama and activities, a group of friends figuring out how to work together to save the day, and a moment between Ronnie and her dad that left me bawling. My recommendation is to grab Book 1 now if you haven’t read it yet so you’re reading for this one in May! Highly recommend!!
