Lęk. Jak pokonać potwora

Rate this book

short review for busy readers:
A basic primer on anxiety and phobias written in accessible and easy to understand language for all ages and education levels. Cute line drawings of the Anxiety Beast and his helping-not-helping attempts to alert his friends to dangers. Good, actionable steps and tips included. Supportive tone, no false cheerleading or saccharine mottos/mantras. Suitable for teens and adults.

in detail:
If you've read some books on anxiety and fear already, you probably won't find more than one or two new things in here. It's pretty much the standard information, but it does include some info on "freeze" reactions and on types of intense and crippling phobias I've not seen covered in more complex works by therapists.

The upshot here is: it's okay to feel anxious. Everyone does at some point, but you are a special case if it gets out of hand. If you try and fight it -- like so many will tell you to -- you'll only make it worse. If you try to "get a grip" or "man up," like so many will admonish you to, you'll just make it worse.

What people don't understand is that they are comparing the normal levels of anxiety they feel and know to your colossal levels, and thinking you're just being a sissy and making a mountain out of a molehill.

The answer, says Dr Goodman, is to accept that Mr Anxiety is there and is trying to help. He's just crap at reading context. You may have an panic attack. That's uncomfortable, but you can handle it. You can and will live through it. It's not an emergency.

Uncertainty is not an emergency. Rejection is not an emergency. Germs are not an emergency. You don't have to like it, but you can learn to tolerate it and go on with your life.

Unlike more clinical books that have worksheets and check lists, this book simply asks you think about when and how the anxiety is triggered in you and then offers simple, easy to manage, easy to track, ways to work towards balance.

The few suggestions I tried worked very well.

This book is quite helpful and especially made for those who may find other books on the subject too complicated, too much like a school text, or too "doctorish".

Mi-a plăcut cartea.

I am, by nature, kind of an anxious person. Life is scary, and certain things in life make it even scarier. This book was a really good worked example of anxiety and how to make your way through it, even when it feels like it’s mired in the worst of everything.

I liked the approach this book took. It wasn’t the sort of book that gave you miracles to anticipate, it just gave a quiet, simple look at what makes us anxious and what we could do to help make it better. I think it would have been better as a physical book (I read this as an eBook) and it is by no means perfect, but it was a good look at a scary thing.

3.5 :)

The book presents key concepts about anxiety, how the brain works, and things the reader can do that help. It explores all the ways anxiety can cause problems and encourages adopting a new, compassionate inner tone toward your “anxiety beast”. It incorporates techniques from cognitive-behavior therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, and compassion therapy. Five stars!

I’d have like more explanation about what anxiety is- this was more a workbook aimed at people who think they have anxiety. That said- I loved the illustration’s and the idea of anxiety being a little friendly breast trying to protect you. The solution to anxiety is to try and talk nicely to your anxiety friends to work through it together! Will give it a try!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Everyone should read this book!b

Not an easy read. Dr. Goodman’s little book as you to do some serious looking at yourself and sole searching. There were a number of times as I did the exercises, where I found myself smiling.
