It’s chaos in Crosbyville when someone tries to swindle a large inheritance, but as Pris and Bailey start digging for the missing money, they uncover the wrong kind of bones….
Finally finished with the renovations on her new house, bestselling children’s book author Pris and her trusty bloodhound, Bailey, are finding more opportunities to join the community, including attending the annual town festival. But their efforts are paw-sed when David Townsend, volatile grandson of the late wealthy resident Edward Townsend, comes to fetch his inheritance.
After the new arrival riles up several other locals with petty arguments, the once sleepy town goes barking mad. Before long, the wealthy bachelor disappears without a trace, and the police suspect foul play. Bailey’s tracking instincts helped them collar the last criminal in Crosbyville, so the cops turn to Pris and her sweet hound to track down David.
But on their search-and-rescue mission, Pris and Bailey sniff out fraud, theft, and a body. Before they know it, both are hackles-deep inside another homicide investigation. Can the unlikely duo chase down the killer, or will they be left chasing their own tails?
A good addition to the series. I enjoyed the time spent with Pris and Bailey and this mystery definitely had a lot of twists and turns. There were a few things that Pris did in this one that made me scratch my head – tampering with evidence even though she mentions so many times how much she has learned from mysteries that she has read and confronting potential killers. The pacing was a little off and it got repetitive at times. Otherwise, I enjoy the series enough to continue and hope these little things are resolved by the next one.
I received a copy from #NetGalley and #Berkleypub for an honest review.
After really enjoying the first book, the sequel was such a let down. Too many characters. Too obvious a twist. Too little time at the festival. Too many conversations on day 3 that should have happened day 1.
HOUNDING A KILLER by Kallie E. Benjamin is the intriguing cozy mystery staring Priscilla ‘Pris’ Cummings and her 3-year-old black and tan bloodhound named Bailey. When two deaths turn from natural causes to murder, they go to work uncovering treasures, finding out the true story and maybe even whodunit.
Pris, a former teacher and now bestselling children’s book author, is on a deadline for her next book in the Bailey the Bloodhound, Pet Detective series. She’s also working hard on creating items to sale in her booth at the upcoming Crosbyville Fall Festival. Delightfully in the mix is her relationship with the town’s chief of police. Pris, Marcie – best friend, and Aunt Agatha – owner of the Blue Plate Special Café - agree to chaperone a girls sleepover party for Gilbert’s daughter and two of her pre-teen friends to be held at Edward Townsend’s mansion. It’s their chance to live like royalty!
Gilbert loves his job, but sometimes he finds it difficult to balance work, home and a relationship. If not for Pris’s help, he doubts he would be successful in any of it. However, when Pris begins to investigate he worries about her methods and her safety. He’s thrilled when she agrees not to try to help solve the recent murders, but she still seems to draw clues to her like a magnet. Can he keep her safe or will he have to resort to arresting her for interference to keep her from harm?
Edward Townsend acquired great wealth in his lifetime and often shared that wealth with organizations he loved. While he had shut out most of his family, he desired his estate to stay in the family. He’s hoping his friend can help him to figure out if the person that’s shown up is actually his descendant or someone trying to swindle a great inheritance. Before verified could be made, Edward and Jay both die. First suspected as natural causes, but was it by the hands of someone?
Can Bailey prove his track and find skills? Will Pris’s “investigation” put her in the line of danger? When Aunt Agatha is listed in Edward’s will as one of the alternate trustees, will it put her on the killer’s bullseye? Between Pris and the PD can they figure out whodunit before someone else dies? Who will inherit Edward Townsend’s fortune?
HOUNDING A KILLER is a fabulous cozy mystery that will have your quickly turning pages. Kallie E. Benjamin gives us a story that will keep you hunting for clues alongside Pris, falling in love with sweet Bailey, enjoying all the cute, well-timed and often true proverbs through the story and watching the relationship between Pris and Gilbert develop all while trying to figure out whodunit. The answer may greatly surprise you. It did me! HOUNDING A KILLER is positively 5-STAR reading. I highly recommend it everyone!
I receive a copy of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own. #HoundingAKiller #ABaileyTheBloodHoundMysterySeries #KallieEBenjamin #cozymystery
Pris and her bloodhound Bailey are back in their second investigation. It is time for the Crosbyville Fall Festival. This time the venue has been changed to the estate of Edward Townsend instead of the fairground. Townsend has recently died and the question of who will inherit the multi-billionaire's fortune is on everybody's mind.
Edward was something of a recluse, but he did patronize Pris's Aunt Agatha's diner for his Sunday dinner. Agatha and Edward were friends. Edward had lost track of his descendants and hired a private investigator to try to track down his heirs. Edward's lawyer found David Townsend who is a grandson. The private investigator found a young girl who is a more distant related.
Pris and Bailey are demonstrating his tracking ability when she discovers the body of one of Edward's trustees in a garden shed. He was badly beaten and dies shortly later in the hospital leaving a vacancy in the trustees who include his lawyer and his accountant - two women who don't get along at all well. Their rivalry is only one of the many at the Townsend estate.
Pris is more than willing to leave the investigation to her boyfriend who is the Chief of Police, but she keeps stumbling on clues. Things heat up when it is learned that Edward Townsend died of poison rather than of natural causes. Now, the Chief of Police has two murders to investigate. Besides the murder, there is also the matter of embezzlement from the estate and a backpack filled with $50,000 in cash which Bailey digs up.
This was an engaging cozy mystery. Pris is not your usual heroine given that she is prone to fainting when the going gets tough. But she and Bailey along with her boyfriend to solve the mystery in the end. And Pris does get her second Bailey the Bloodhound children's book finished too.
Hounding a Killer, the 2nd book in Kallie E. Benjamin's A Bailey the Bloodhound Mystery series, is even better than the first book and I loved that one. When Pris quit teaching elementary school to dedicate her time to writing a children's book featuring her bloodhound as a detective, she never imagined that she would be the one doing the investigating. Bailey is presented as a dog, because that is what he is, a very special dog who acts like a dog. In this case, Pris and her best friend agree to chaperone a birthday sleep over for a trio of preteens including her boyfriend's daughter. The group is as energetic and excitable as the ones I used to teach, so they are absolutely realistic. The party has been approved to take place at a mansion before the death of the owner, but one of his trustees insisted that he would want the sleep over and a festival to take place on the state to continue. The girls didn't know the gentleman, but a friend had arranged the weekend fun. Bodies showing up, suspicious deaths, violence, missing money and missing people keep Pris as well as her boyfriend and police chief busy trying to untangle the complicated piles of mysteries. I have read every book V.M. Burns/Valerie Burns/Kallie E. Benjamin has published, and I have loved every one of them. Thank you to NetGalley and Berley Publishing Group for allowing me to read an ARC of Hounding a Killer and share the fun with my friends and followers. This delightful tail is sure to entrance fans of cozy mysteries and dogs. #NetGalley #Berkley #KallieE.Benjamin #BaileytheBloodHoundMystery #HoundingaKiller #VMBurns #ValerieBurns
"Hounding A Killer" is book #2 in "A Bailey The Bloodhound Mystery" by Kallie E. Benjamin.
Finding the real heir(s) to a huge estate turns to chaos when a murder occurs. The bloodlines to the family are complex and the search takes some unusual twists before the truth finally comes to light.
The core characters of this series are an interesting bunch. They are opinionated, yet have a strong bond and aren't above throwing in a bit of wit/snark when need calls. Pris's inner dialogue had me chuckling a few times. Gilbert is a dedicated police chief and loving father to tween daughter Hannah. The three tween girls having a sleepover birthday party while all the adults are focused on the questions of inheritance and murder added another dimension and sometimes a needed diversion for the stressed adults. A few fights (fist and cat variety) are also thrown in for good measure. Of course, Bailey the bloodhound is also on the case to search out missing persons and protect the humans he loves. Yes, he is also a big adorable scene stealer!
There were a couple of characters that I really wanted to reach in and slap/kick when they got out of hand but they all got taken care of in good time! I honestly wasn't completely sure who was ultimately responsible for the killing until shortly before Pris put it all together but getting there was quite enjoyable!
Overall, this was a paw-sitively entertaining cozy read that kept me turning the pages to see how it all played out!
It was fun to visit with Pris and Bailey again. I also enjoyed revisiting Pris' crew, her friend Marcie, her Aunt Agatha, and of course Gilbert and Hannah. This book had tons of additional characters, sometimes to the point of confusion. Maybe a list at the beginning of the book would have helped readers. Pris, Bailey, and company get caught up at the estate of a recently decreased billionaire who had lended his estate for a town festival. When Bailey's demonstration of his tracking skills turns up a dead body, all heck breaks lose. When questions about one of the trustees of the estate come up, we find out that our estate owner was also murdered. With multiple murders, missing heirs, and missing money, can Pris and Baily help the police figure out what is really going on? Is someone going to get away with multiple murders? Who really is supposed to inherit all that money? Will Pris be able to finish her next Bailey the Bloodhound book on time? You are going to want to be around for all the action! Hounding a Killer by Kallie E. Benjamin is a cute cozy mystery. My favorite character is Bailey the Bloodhound. I found Pris to be a little off in this book. Pris was too timid, she overreacted, her feelings got hurt easily, and she took things the wrong way (often). It got old quickly (I wanted to recommend that she see a counselor). I did not feel the chemistry between Pris and her boyfriend. They felt like good friends instead of romantic partners. The mystery was interesting with red herrings plus a twist or two. There was a long reveal at the end. I found the pacing to be a tad slow and there were repetitive details. I enjoyed the excerpts from the Bailey the Bloodhound book that Pris was working on. Hounding the Killer is the second A Bailey the Bloodhound Mystery and it can be read as a standalone for those who have not read Sniffing Out Murder. Hounding the Killer is a chaotic cozy mystery with a transferred festival, a departed recluse, heir issues, a missing man, a body found by a bloodhound, and catching a killer.
Pris and her trusty bloodhound, Bailey, are attending the annual town festival. Days before a local Billionaire had passed away and his heir has shown up causing problems for the locals. After he goes missing, Pris and Bailey are asked to track him down. But on their search-and-rescue mission, Pris and Bailey sniff out fraud, theft, and a body.
I read the first book in this series and really enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to this book. Unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. Pris seemed to be different in this book, more timid, easily hurt and taking things the wrong way and overreacting. The mystery was interesting but the characters just did not seem to have any chemistry and felt one note. I hope the author can find her way back because the first book really was good.
Thanks to netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
I love this new series starring a detective who happens to be a bloodhound and his person who writes children's books about a bloodhound detective (and investigates murder while dating the local police detective). Looks like the story would be simple, but there are several really diabolical twists and I got caught in a couple of the red herrings. Can't say more without getting into spoiler territory, but this is a really unputdownable book! Hounding a Killer is book #2 in the Bailey the Bloodhound Mystery series by Kallie E. Benjamin.
This is the first book that I read in the series and I had no trouble reading it as a standalone book. Pris is an author of children’s books starring her bloodhound, Bailey. Bailey’s adventures don’t just take place in books, he actually made a discovery which brought him and Pris into a murder investigation. I really enjoyed this book and plan to go back and read the first one.
Thank you to the author, Berkley, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Thank you so much for the free book!! @BerkleyPub #BerkleyPartner
The fun continues with Bailey The Bloodhound in this cozy mystery series by @vmburnsbooks. This time Pris & Bailey are on the job to uncover the truth behind a suspicious bag of buried cash, the real identity of an heir to a 2 billion dollar estate & the whodunnit in a mysterious murder … or three!!
It looks pretty cut & dried at the beginning, who is causing all the mayhem, but the end brought a nice little twist and a pretty satisfying ending!
This series has been a lot of fun so far … the mysteries are engaging, the characters are loveable and it’s been a delight to get to know them all. Looking forward to more from Pris, Bailey and all their friends!
Pris and her trusty dog Bailey are deep into some unsavory business. The town’s festival celebration is disrupted when a the grandson of a wealthy resident shows up to claim an inheritance. His disappearance leads Pris and Bailey to search for him, but things rapidly go downhill. Fraud, theft, and murder on the agenda, and Pris and Bailey are in the thick of it. This intriguing and gripping cozy will have readers flipping pages until the end. It’s well-written with equally well-developed characters, but Bailey is one who steals the show.
Pris is surprised when her bloodhound Bailey, who is both a search and rescue and therapy dog, finds a big bag of money. She turns it over to the chief of police, who is also her boyfriend. The wealthy old man who lived on the estate where Bailey found the money has recently died--could it have been murder? And is the man who claims to be his heir be a fraud? The police are on the case, but so are Pris and Bailey.
Though I did enjoy this mystery, Pris's detecting skills need work. She doesn't know how to handle evidence or clues, and can't tell that an unconscious person is unconscious. It's fine if she's imperfect and makes mistakes, but dumb mistakes are just annoying.
It is okay. Written, I think, for those new to mysteries who need to be reminded of the clues every few pages. Enjoyable, quick to read, interesting characters, interesting small town.
Another good one in this series. There sure were a bunch of suspects. Not very nice folks whether they were guilty or not. Bailey is definitely a smart do.
Love this story with a bloodhound and an author dating the police chief. An old money family with a fake heir. Several murders, some snotty characters and hijinx.
A fantastic read! I look forward to more books in this series. Bailey is such a sweetheart, and I loved the excerpt from a Bailey the Bloodhound book at the end. The audiobook was great.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Hounding a Killer by Kallie E. Benjamin has Pris and Bailey trying hard not to get involved in another investigation, but it just happens when Bailey, quite literally, sticks his nose into the middle of the investigation.
Can Pris and Bailey find the missing pieces to this inheritance case?
Pris and Bailey Pris and Bailey are back again with another case. They tried so hard. Okay, Pris tried so hard to stay out of another case that the police were involved in, but Bailey couldn't stay out of it. Pris is trying not to say sorry all the time, and be in the moment instead of thinking ahead about different possibilities. Bailey is still his spoiled basset hound self. He is getting as many treats as he wants and butting into actual cases instead of make-believe ones for Pris’s stories.
The Mystery Pris, Bailey, and Marcie were taking a walk and stopped to talk when Bailey decided to start to dig and found some money in a bag. Well, Pris called it in to her boyfriend, and he was going to look into it. Everything went into mystery mode after that for Pris and Bailey as they started to talk to some people and gathered information. I had a feeling about who did it, but I wasn’t certain until the moment when it was revealed.
Five Stars My rating for Hounding a Killer by Kallie E. Benjamin is five stars, and I do recommend this series. I love Pris and Bailey and how Pris is writing children’s detective mysteries using Bailey as inspiration for the pet detective. It’s so cool, and I love how Pris’s mind works, not only for her books but also in solving actual crimes. Ms. Benjamin did a fantastic job on this story, and I look forward to seeing where Pris and Bailey end up finding evidence next.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Hounding a Killer by Kallie E. Benjamin.
Lots of victims are piling up in IN in this 2nd book with Bailey and Pris The story unfolds much like a country estate mystery of old. The victims keep appearing and also remove suspects in the process. My only complaint with the book is there were so many characters it was hard to keep track of them all in the first part of the book. As it progressed it became easier to track people
As a former children’s librarian, I enjoy this cozy series about a children’s mystery author and her faithful canine buddy. It had been a while since I read the first one, so it took me a little bit to remember who the characters were, and there were a lot of new names to keep straight, but other than that, I enjoyed the story very much. I had some suspicions about whodunnit which turned out to be true, but it didn’t ruin the book for me, as the fun is in the storytelling and Kallie E. Benjamin aka Valerie Burns aka VM Burns is an excellent storyteller.
Also, I don’t think there are nearly enough people of color or of different races as main characters in cozy mysteries, and I enjoy reading books with very authentic characters of different ethnic backgrounds. It probably didn’t matter if the characters were white, black, purple or green, as it doesn’t really affect the plot, but I like to have some diversity in my reading. I worked hard to include diversity in my storytimes before I retired as my audiences were quite diverse, and that has stayed with me even as I choose books to read on my own in my retirement.
I just love Pris and all her friends’ characters! I really enjoyed that first book, but this one might just be even better. There was so much going on with Pris juggling a looming deadline, wanting to investigate but not let Gilbert know and being one of three adults watching over three tween-age girls, one of which was boyfriend police chief Gilbert’s own daughter. No pressure there, Pris, lol.
Bailey was at his sniffing best as he found clues and alerted when help was needed. The showdown was a good one and Pris’s pitching arm was still in great form. Everything that hadn’t been explained came out at the end as did Pris’s newest manuscript. I loved the title “The Case of the Dancing Dachshund” since I’ve got my own little dachshund who dances for food, lol. Very much hoping this series continues because I’ve definitely not read enough about Pris, Bailey and all their friends, I need more!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC provided via NetGalley by Berkley Publishing, and my opinions are my own.
This is the second book in A Bailey The Bloodhound Mystery series. Definitely worth the wait. What starts out as inheritance fraud turns into fraud, theft and a body. Follow Pris and her trusty bloodhound David on the adventure to solve this mystery. This books brings back some favorite characters from the first book and adds couple new ones. 5 stars all the way.
