As complex and diverse as New York City is, so is the New York City government. Unique in its composition of five boroughs which are home for 8.5 million residents, New York City has a municipal budget that is the largest of any city in the country, the largest public healthcare system, largest public school system - and has 6,000 miles of streets that need paving, plowing, cleaning and patrolling. "What Makes New York City Run?" is a guide book for New Yorkers to understand the makeup of the city government, different roles of elected officials, how the City spends its money, makes land use decisions, provides city services - and how it all works together and in concert with the NY State government. It also highlights ways for New Yorkers to play a role and effect change.
This book was written by the League of Women Voters of the City of New York to help New Yorkers become better informed and civically engaged.
