Thomas O'Grady is the unofficial King of Sugar Mountain. He's always been untouchable; the kind of man you admire from afar, but don't get to be close to. So imagine my surprise when I get offered a job working underneath him at his resort. It's a dream come true... until it isn't. He's grumpy, opinionated and judgemental. I want to tell him exactly where he can shove it, but then I meet his daughter...
Nothing matters more to me than my little girl. My world stops and starts with her. Running my family's resort is a job. Being Clara's dad is a gift. I wasn't looking for a relationship, but when Brooklyn walked into my office with her firey red hair and matching personality, all bets were off. I've tried to keep it professional, but that woman pushes every single button I've got. And hell, I sort of love her for it.
J. (jenn) Sterling is a New York Times and USA Today best selling author of multiple contemporary romances. She lives in California with her only son, Blake. If you can't find her sitting behind a computer screen writing new stories, then there's a good chance she's sitting in the bleachers of a baseball stadium watching him play.
Jenn enjoys traveling to new places, meeting her readers and spending time with the love of her life, the one & only, Jack F'n Carter! Oh yeah, it's true. <3
So, I actually really liked a lot of things about this story but I also had a couple of issues.
We follow our fmc brooklyn who’s newly divorced and our mmc, Thomas who lost his wife during childbirth 8 years prior.
Thomas works for his family’s resort as a financial director, I believe which seems to be a very large and lucrative one.
The events director at the resort is moving and asks Brooklyn if she’d take the job - hating to leave it in the hand of anyone not quite capable of. Brooklyn wants to accept immediately of course, what a dream job- her one hang up is, she doesn’t think Thomas likes her very much due to an accidental drunken run in.
I really liked the set up of this one. It was heartwarming that even though Thomas had lost his wife and his adorable little girl lost her mother that they still had such a large loving family dynamic.
All of the OGrady men are single - including the father who is a widower as well and Thomas’s two brothers Patrick and Matthew.
There’s quite a lot of foreshadowing going on for the brothers which definitely makes me want to get to their stories in their own books, but it was so much foreshadowing that it took away from the couple in this book.
The relationship between Brooklyn and Thomas seemed to move extremely quick. After one quasi date he wanted “everything “ with her which seemed like a stretch to me due to him not having a relationship in 8 years.
I’m not saying it’s not entirely possible, but the author failed to show me why either of these two were smitten with each other so fast and when they uttered I love you I actually scoffed and rolled my eyes.
As cute as little Clara was, there was too much of her in this book. And when Brooklyn has internal thoughts about Thomas’s hard dick in the presence of the kid it really icked me out.
The kid was all over this book. And I didn’t feel that we got enough grown up time. I don’t even mean that in reference to spice, just adult time. Without all the kid talk.
I did really enjoy the small town vibes - this isn’t exactly a small town, but it feels that way. And again, the family vibes hit so hard. I loved this big family of men who are absolutely wrapped around this little girls finger.
I’m also excited to get to the two brothers stories next. One I believe is going to be childhood friends to lovers who were forced to separate and the other is an ex pro or college hockey player who was injured and can no longer play.
I think this is worth the read if you enjoy a good family rep, enjoy single dads that are ALL about their little princess and a good small town vibe.

I actually listened to the audiobook version of this book on audible. I enjoyed the story overall, but it didn’t wow me. If you’re looking for a somewhat grumpy single dad, who lost his wife when their child was born, and a woman who is newly divorced after ending a marriage that just wasn’t what she wanted, then this is the perfect book for you. It’s a small mountain town that has a resort that attracts tourists during the winter. He is part of the family that owns and runs the resort and she is someone who grew up in the town. They really just haven’t crossed paths in a way where he knows who she is outside of her name. They have a funny/awkward meet cute and then it takes off from there. I enjoyed the story and the voice actors, like I said it just didn’t blow me away. The child in this is very present. If I remember correctly she’s like 6 or 8 🤣. She’s sweet and funny, but definitely very present in the story as a heads up to those who aren’t big on the kids being highlighted.
I recommend this to anyone who is looking for grumpy single dad and newly single heroine, who fall pretty quickly, and the child is funny and present in the plot. Low-medium spice depending how you rate it.
There's nothing better than when a crafty wordsmith whose work you love starts a new series, and I’m already in love with Sugar Mountain and it’s people. We begin with the brother who seems to be the grumpiest of the bunch, single dad Thomas O'Grady.
Of course Brooklyn McKay, the resort’s new events director is all bubbly sunshine, and the complete opposite of Thomas. His daughter, Clara, is drawn to Brooklyn and the two are so sweet together and make the story extra heartwarming. Problem is, Thomas finds himself equally drawn to the new employee.
This is a good start to a promising series. Although a little wordy at times and bit of an abrupt ending, I’m looking forward to Patrick and Matthew's books. I love the small town setting and the resort backdrop. The family bond is strong and admirable, and all the men dote on little Clara. Brooklyn fits in with the family beautifully and she and Thomas are perfect together. Full of humor, heat, and heart, I can’t wait to see what’s in store next for this endearing O'Grady family.
I gave Worth the Fall a fair shot, reading about 30%, but it really wasn’t for me. The writing felt flat, and the way the characters talk to each other is just unrealistic. For example, in a job interview, Thomas—the grumpy widower—asks Brooklyn about her divorce? That felt bizarre and completely unprofessional.
Also, the constant "grumpy" label for Thomas was irritating. The man lost his wife during childbirth—he's more than earned his right to be upset. But then we find out he didn’t even love her that much? Yet he nearly dropped their daughter and fell to his knees when things went wrong? It just didn’t add up emotionally, and I couldn’t connect with him at all.
And can we talk about the name Clarabel for his daughter? It sounds like something straight out of the 1930s and didn’t fit the tone at all. It came off as odd and outdated, not charming.
Finally, I couldn’t understand why Brooklyn was offered a job in the first place. She’s from Sugar Mountain, but doesn’t live there now, and there was no indication that she had done anything noteworthy to deserve the job. Instead of discussing qualifications, Thomas asks about her divorce, and just like that, she gets the offer?!
In the end, Worth the Fall wasn’t engaging. The writing, dialogue, and character choices were all too far-fetched for me to enjoy.
1.5 🌶️ 5 ⭐️ for all the emotions I was in the middle of another book when this appeared in my inbox and I don’t think I’ve ever run so fast to download it and start reading and I have no regrets. This book was exactly what I was looking for in a small town romance and worth staying up until 3 am to finish! Jenn has a way of writing that makes you feel like you’re talking to your best friend- all her characters are so real, the emotions they feel and the situations they go through are relatable to everyone, you just get it and sympathize. Brooklyn was a strong female with insecurities that I think every woman would have after going through a divorce and Thomas was also going through his own issues with something from his past. You knew these two were perfect for each other but the journey to get them together was absolutely beautiful. I loved Clarabel and even the other side characters like Lana and Rose cracked me up. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the O’Grady brothers! Thank you to Jenn and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.
I honestly I love single dad romances but throw in workplace romance with it as well and that's makes for one great story. Thomas and Brooklyn was instant attraction but what sold me was the relationship Brooklyn had with Clara his daughter who FYI her nicknames for everyone was so funny. I will be calling people waffle princess. The O'Grady boys have some troubles when it comes to romance and I can't wait to see what's next to come.
Brooklyn was finally making herself happy. After walking away from her marriage she is ready to do just that. When her dream job at Sugar Mountain Resort falls in her lap can she work with sexy Thomas O’Grady and his darling daughter Clara.
Thomas’ entire life is his daughter and the resort. When he meets the unforgettable Brooklyn he isn’t ready for the changes for the better she will to his and his daughter’s lives!
I can’t wait for the next O’Grady brother’s book!!
“My wife died giving birth to our daughter.” Okay, this is definitely a first sentence to get your attention. And if you’re not crying by the end of the first paragraph you don’t even have a heart. Thomas and Jenna went to high school together, married suddenly at age 23 when she discovered she was going to have a baby, and were beginning a new life together. Maybe they were a little young and hadn’t planned their future this far out, but they were making it. Until while giving birth to their baby daughter, Jenna suffered a brain aneurysm and died. Thomas was now a widower and a single dad, just like his own father.
Fast forward eight years. Thomas is now a dedicated, devoted dad to Clarabel, a smart, active, joyous little girl spoiled outrageously by her grandfather Pops and her Uncles Patrick and Matthew. And Thomas? His name is now almost officially Mr. Grumpy. He loves his little girl, he is good at and likes his job at the family’s Sugar Mountain Resort but women, dating, relationships? No, thanks. He finally got over (most of) the self-inflicted guilt from Jenna’s death, he worries about being a good father, work and Clara keep him busy, and that’s more than enough. Until Brooklyn McKay runs into him – literally, wanting to go rock climbing on his chest – and then again as a job candidate to replace his assistant. The state she’s in and why she wants to go rock climbing is happy/sad, the job interview is funny/intriguing. Worth the Fall just takes off and it’s non-stop enjoyment from this point on.
Brooklyn is just getting out of a bad, bad, bad marriage. She refused to admit it to herself for a long time, but she wasn’t ever very happy and feeling taken advantage of and invisible became unbearable. She is good at and enjoys her job, but the position at the resort would be challenging and a new beginning. Being around those sinfully handsome O’Gradys, especially Thomas, is a bonus.
Sugar Mountain is a small town. They all went to the same high school but not at the same time, so while they know of each other they don’t know each other well. Except that everybody knows the O’Grady family. But what’s with that spark between her and Thomas? They hardly know each other. And spark nothing – it’s about to hit forest fire level.
Thomas is rude, opinionated, judgmental – and sexy. Brooklyn is strong, wary, gives as good as she gets, doesn’t back down – also sexy. Their encounters are often laugh-out-loud funny. They are irresistibly drawn together, then he jumps back almost in panic, then she wonders what she/they are doing, and then it starts again. Factor in the instant warmth she feels for Clara and the adoration Clara immediately feels for her and you’ve got one enjoyable, romantic, charming, steamy, hilarious story. I love stories like this: single parent, precocious yet lovable, adorable child, and the old enemy, new crush, best-friend-now-love-interest stepping into the picture and you can see this instant family forming almost right before your eyes. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy. The heat between the adults will make you toasty warm, too.
Worth the Fall is sweet, steamy, thoughtful, entertaining. Underneath the sexy scenes and the funny scenes is a lot of life happening. And a close look at two people just hanging in, hanging on, trying to get through what life has thrown at them, trying not to feel guilty for the decisions they made, to not feel they are to blame for things they never could control. Their attraction is strong, much more than just casual or physical. It is physical, but there is also romance and trust and yearning. The story is well written, smoothly plotted and introduces us to a large cast of family and friends we hope to see more of. I was drawn into the story at once with that strong first chapter and loved every minute of the book, and the dedication at the start is amazing. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series and to read more from this talented author. I received an advance copy of Worth the Fall from Wordsmith Publicity. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
Worth The Fall by J Sterling is book one in her new series The O’Grady Brothers. The brothers are the most eligible bachelors in the small town of Sugar Mountain. We start with a delightful single dad romance between Thomas O’Grady and Brooklyn McKay. They are attracted to each other when they first meet but he turns out to be her new boss and she is looking to find some happiness in her life. She never expects it to come in the form of a funny and smart eight year old. Thomas isn’t interested in a relationship and thinks due to their history, all the O’Grady men are meant to be alone?
Thomas owns and runs the Sugar Mountain Resort with his father and two younger brothers. His wife Jenna died giving birth to their daughter Clarabel, so he has spent the last eight years raising her. Clara is his reason for living and he has become known as “Grumpy O’Grady”.
We first meet Brooklyn when she is out with her best friends Lana, celebrating her divorce from Eli. She had complained to him how unhappy she was but he never listened to her. A few drinks later and back at the resort she drunkenly bumps into a hard mountain of a man and they have a hilarious encounter.
The problems then start when she is offered a job at the resort. Brooklyn is very attracted to Thomas but after the experience of her marriage she doesn’t trust her decisions when it comes to men and relationships, also he happens to be her boss now. I loved how she said what she meant and stood up to him. She never tries to impress him and even puts up with his hot and cold attitude towards her.
He hasn’t dated since Jenna so thinks avoiding her will stop him thinking about her. The trouble is he was taken with her the day she run into him and since the interview he’s never felt so alive. He slowly realises she’s perfect for him as she’s so good with Clara but could he put not only his heart on the line but also Clara’s ?
As the romance develops with some funny incidents we learn a lot about his brothers. Patrick, the middle brother, is pining over his first love Addison who left to go to cookery school in New York. I was so pleased when Jasper came into his life. Matthew, the youngest, was a playboy hockey star but lost his career due to an injury so drinks a lot. He obviously likes Bella the bartender at Sugar Saloon but she’s his best friend’s sister. There is a wonderful brotherly dynamic between the three and the banter and teasing between them is great.
Clara has all the O’Gardy men wrapped round her little finger and they would do anything for her. i loved all the silly nicknames she gave everyone, they were cute and amusing. She is very strong willed and her outlook on life was brillant, It was lovely how Brooklyn helped and supported her. She’s not the only one who will have you laughing out loud as Lana is a really funny character and has Brooklyn’s back throughout.
The protective dad vibes from Thomas were wonderful and it was great how he quickly developed them for Brooklyn. It was nice how he appreciated she is struggling with the guilt over the divorce and is concerned everything is moving too fast. I felt their relationship became a true partnership and was exactly what they both needed but would she accept his love? I am looking forward to the rest of this series as the author has really set the scene for Patrick and Matthew's books. An entertaining start to a new series.
Small town romances are my favorite. This book is book 1 in a new series by J. Sterling and I’m so excited. I can’t wait for Patrick and Matthew’s story. I already feel like it will be a roller coaster of emotions, especially Patrick’s story. Each of the 3 brother’s went through something when it came to relationships. Thomas lost his wife during child birth, Patrick lost the one person he has ever loved when she moved away and Matthew sounds like a real playboy (his story will be the most interesting I believe).
Thomas wasn’t always so grumpy. He once had a beautiful wife and a baby on the way, but that all changed the day his daughter was born. It was the happiest and hardest day of his life. Thank god for his family that help him move forward. He had his daughter to take care of and she was all that mattered to him now. He thought he was happy, his whole world revolved around his daughter, she was the light of his life. Well that was until a feisty read head walked right into him, literally.
Brooklyn never thought that she would be getting a divorce at such a young age. The last year of her marriage was the worst time of her life. She lost herself trying to fix something that wasn’t going to change. So after trying and trying and trying, she had enough and filed for a divorce, her ex was just using her by the end and it was a situation she did not want to be in. The days after her divorce was finalized were some of the best of her life. Everything was turning around. She got offered her dream job and she was working with the hottest man she has ever met. It wasn’t only his looks though, the way he was with his daughter was everything.
Thomas tried to stay away. He tried to give her the time Brooklyn needed to heal from her divorce. He tried to be professional and not blur the lines, but he was weak. The lines were blurring and he was giving Brooklyn whip lash. One day he would ask her out, the next he would avoid her, the following he would make out with her and the next he would pretend it didn’t happen. She didn’t know what was happening, but she also thought starting a relationship so soon after her divorce was wrong. But he is the only one that has ever made he feel this way. Could she get out of her head and let this happen and could he just be open to her about what he wanted?
Received this ARC for my honest review and opinion.
In this first installment of the Sugar Mountain series, J. Sterling has embraced the small town trope with great success. There’s a resort, the O’Gradys own it and run it and it’s the jewel of this town, responsible for a lot of the tourism coming in. There are three gorgeous O’Grady brothers, each with their own angsty story and we get the oldest one here, with snippets of what’s to come about the other two. And there’s one precious little girl, Clarabel, who is eight years old, and clearly the owner of all the O’Grady men’s heart. It all promises to be a yummy story and the author delivers!
Brooklyn McKay has just gotten divorced from a loser husband who preferred to play video games with his buddies than to spend time with his wife. There’s guilt and sadness over all the time spent in a marriage that had been doomed for some time. When she’s offered the job of event coordinator at Sugar Mountain Resort, she jumps at the chance, and in so doing, came to work with the oldest O’Grady brother, the grumpy Thomas. Sparks fly, chemistry burns, all systems alert! There are funny references to rock climbing and it’s not about mountains, but about rock abs!
I loved that the author didn’t give us cookie cutter characters, but people with real flaws. In Thomas’ case, he was grumpy, quick to take offense, and judgy. And of course, Brooklyn has a smart mouth that sasses him right back! Thus starts a spicy sweet story, interspaced with snippets of brothers playing pranks on each other, banter of all kinds, and a little girl bossing over everyone.
It was a delightful story, with yummy sexy times, and cute cuddly times. Very entertaining, and very sweet. I loved the O’Grady brothers and can’t wait to read Patrick’s bittersweet story of lost love.
🗻Join the O’Grady men at Sugar Mountain Resort and fall in love with Brooklyn, Clara, and Thomas like I did!
📚Worth the Fall (Sugar Mountain Book 1) 🖋Author ~ J. Sterling 🖋Features: Small town romance, Enemies to lovers ⭐️Rating: 5/5
Thomas O’Grady ~ I could see my whole future every time I looked in her eyes.
Thomas O’Grady and Brooklyn McKay are just what Sugar Mountain needs to find their happily ever after. The Resort is the perfect setting for Brooklyn to start rebuilding her life after walking away from a disappointing relationship. Excited about a new job, she comes toe to toe with ‘Grumpy’ single dad Thomas O’Grady.
Brooklyn’s sassy mouth is just what Thomas needs to break open his heart to the possibility of love. After tragically losing his wife, his main focus has always been his young, charismatic daughter Clarabel, his dad and two incredible brothers, and the family business.
Is it too soon for Brooklyn to accept the love and future both Clarabel and Thomas are offering her?
🗻Sugar Mountain is the second chance for Thomas and Brooklyn. Can’t wait to read Worth the Wait (Book 2) to see if Patrick and Addison can rebuild their relationship.

Review: Such a good start to a new small town romance series! I LOVED every single character. Thomas is broody and closed off to most people but is a total sweetie for his daughter, Clarabel, and as soon as he meets Brooklyn, he’s a goner for her. I love how feisty and strong Brooklyn is. Clarabel is adorable and quirky. This was seriously such a beautiful love story that was fast paced. They both fell hard for each other and were so perfect. Definitely recommend!
Tropes include: single dad, work place and small town romance.
*4 stars* I only recently read a book by the author and I've definitely enjoyed reading her stories. I loved the feel of a small town romance but I also loved the relationships between all of the lead characters, especially the chemistry between Brooklyn & Thomas but also with the little girl Clara. It was a really enjoyable read that had my heart melting. Excited to see what this series brings next.
Thomas has been through a lot and is raising his little girl Clara the best way he can. Alongside his brothers, he's been working hard at Sugar Mountain resort. When he needs to find another assistant, the suggestion to bring in Brooklyn for the position doesn't really sit well with him but he knows that there might be no one better to work with him. Brooklyn only recently had a divorce and isn't really looking for something new but a fresh start at the resort might be the change she really needs. When being near to Thomas, it isn't really what she thought it would be but the more they get to know each other, their relationship starts to grow and feelings grow deeper. But both know that there's a lot more to consider than putting their work on the line... Will they find their way to each other in the end?...
❄️”A woman didn’t simply pack up and leave overnight. It might have looked that way from the man’s perspective or to an outsider, but rarely, if ever, the truth. Women fought until we couldn’t fight anymore. We tried until we were exhausted from trying. And once we finally made the decision to leave, it hadn’t come lightly or without warning. Men were always warned. And by that point, our minds could rarely be changed.”❄️
J. Sterling has done once again given me all the feels!!! The dedication alone gave me all the feels. I truly got warm fuzzy feelings whenever Sugar Mountain was talked about. Honestly this books gave me Hallmark movie vibes, but in a good way. I love the characters. Brooklyn is such a fierce character. It took real strength to make the decision to not only reclaim your happiness but to put it first. I really admire her. Then you have Thomas aka Grumpy. I love how alpha male he is but the second Clarabel says “daddy” he’s a pile of mush. All the O’Grady men turn to mush. She has them wrapped around her little finger and she knows it.
Worth the Fall is worth the read. Thank you J. Sterling and Bookfunnel for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book. I absolutely loved every minute of it.
Worth the Fall by J. Sterling is a beautifully emotional and heartfelt romance that captures the essence of love, loss, and second chances. The story centers around characters who have both faced their share of heartache, but when they meet, they are given the opportunity to heal and find something worth fighting for.
The chemistry between the characters is undeniable from the start, with a slow build that allows the relationship to feel real and genuine. Sterling does an excellent job of making the characters relatable, as they struggle with their pasts while trying to navigate their growing feelings for each other.
What sets this book apart is the emotional depth. The dialogue is engaging, and the storylines are filled with raw, honest moments that really tug at your heartstrings. If you enjoy romance novels that make you feel all the emotions while rooting for the characters to overcome their obstacles and find their happily-ever-after, Worth the Fall is a must-read.
This book delivers on every front—romance, heart, and a satisfying journey of two people learning to love again. J.sterling has done it again as I have been with her since her first book being an amazing baseball romance series I’m so excited to enter this new genre with her.
I love a good small town romance. This was a feel-good story of loss, healing, and finding love to complete a family.
Brooklyn was fresh out of a divorce with a marriage she’d been finished with for awhile. A job opportunity wasn’t the only thing she would be getting with the new direction of life. The resort that would be a dream come true to work at fell in her lap. Her boss was a grump though, but with his past nobody could blame him. He was a single dad and part owner of the resort. Living in a small town, everyone knew everyone and everything. Things heated up between the two after setting the ex husband straight. I love a well-earned HEA.
A woman didn’t simply pack up and leave overnight. It might have looked that way from the man’s perspective or to an outsider, but that was rarely, if ever, the truth. Women fought until we couldn’t fight anymore. We tried until we were exhausted from trying. And once we finally made the decision to leave, it hadn’t come lightly or without warning.
No glove, no love. (Jack Carter Easter egg- thank you!)
“We have a tradition in our family where we go around the table and say what we’re thankful for. And since you’re new, we’re putting you on the spot and making you go first.” (We need to start this tradition)
If you love single dad romances look no further than Worth the Fall (Sugar Mountain #1). This is single dad Thomas O’Grady, his daughter Clara and new girl in town Brooklyn’s entertaining journey. Brooklyn has moved to start a new life after walking away from her marriage, it’s her time and she can’t believe her luck when she is offered her dream job at Sugar Mountain Resort. Problem is that means working side by side with broody and hot Thomas O’Grady……. Thomas’s world is his daughter and the resort but one meeting with Brooklyn has him wanting more and that’s when the fun begins. I love single parent stories and I love small town romances so this book was a win/win for me. It’s a great start to the new series and if this book is anything to go by Ms Sterling will certainly have a hit series on her hands. Worth the Fall has all the feels, I fell hard and fast for Thomas and Brooklyn is the woman I want as a bestie but it was a little girl named. Clara who stole the show with the classic one liners only a child can deliver. A great start to the new series that has left me excited for my next visit to Sugar Mountain Resort.
Sugar Mountain is now a place I would like to visit. 🤭😉
Tropes: Single dad Workplace romance No third act break up Grump/sunshine He falls first. Trigger warning:Death of a spouse.
I was so excited to start this book and tried to finish it asap. The O’Grady Brothers are known on Sugar Mountain and are admired by all the women of the town.
This first book is about Thomas and his story starts off with a shocking event. You can’t help but fall in love with his daughter Clara. He and his whole family love and protect her since she is the light of their lives. He is grumpy to everyone but his daughter.
Brooklyn is recently divorced and is trying to find herself. She is trying to make sure she is living her life for herself and no one else. An unexpected literal run in with Thomas throws her a curve ball she wasn’t expecting.
The story is great, you fall in love with all the characters, (I am excited about the next two books for the other brother’s stories) and the best part is no third act break up.
Would I recommend? Yes! Would I re-read? Yes especially once the other books come out.
Summary: Brooklyn has just walked away from a marriage where she felt unappreciated and is now stepping into an exciting new chapter with a highly sought-after job. The only snag? Her new boss is as grouchy as he is intriguing, constantly pushing her buttons and drawing out her fiery side. Now, she’s faced with the challenge of staying professional and biting her tongue, even when it’s easier said than done.
Thoughts: I really loved the small-town charm of this book—it felt so cozy and inviting. I was completely immersed in the resort setting; it felt like I was right there, which made the experience even better.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a romance where I get swept away by an ideal man who knows all the right things to say. But what I loved and found most refreshing about this book is how it sincerely felt like men having conversations exactly like they go down in real life.
The hints of drama were just the right amount, never too much, which kept the story engaging without feeling overwhelming. I’m so excited to have discovered this author and can’t wait to dive into more of their work!
I devoured this book in one sitting. This is my first book from J. Sterling and it will not be my last! I am very excited to see where the rest of this small town series goes.
I loved Thomas and Brooklyn’s first run in. It had me laughing and smiling from ear to ear because it was so funny and something I could see happening in real life. But of course it wasn’t all easy going after that and Thomas made assumptions about Brooklyn and he made sure to apologize and admit that he was wrong and jumped to conclusions about her. Brooklyn and Thomas started off a bit rocky with the work relationship but they eventually grew and evolved and that relationship started to turn into more.
Clara, Thomas’s daughter, was absolutely adorable! Her relationship with each character in the book was so wholesome and so sweet! I also loved her knack for giving nicknames to every person in her life including Brooklyn and giving her the nickname waffle princess!
I honestly loved the banter between Thomas and Brooklyn and how she never backed down to him and she spoke her mind around him. These two had so much chemistry and were perfect for each other. The 3rd act conflict (no breakup) surprised me and I appreciated how it played out and how Thomas communicated to Brooklyn in understanding exactly what she needed.
I honestly can’t wait for the next book in the series! I am excited to see the brothers get their HEA!
Single parent AND grumpy/sunshine AND small town?! It's a dream trifecta of romance tropes, and I enjoyed how it all played out in J. Sterling's latest series starter. Thomas and Brooklyn's first interaction left an impression on both of them, as it did with me, hooking me in and making me curious as to how their story would play out. They did have a number of matchmakers on their side because these two did need a bit of nudging whenever they made their fair share of assumptions. For as much as they appeared to be open and honest with each other, they seemed to have trouble communicating, ironically enough. But I loved seeing Thomas, Brooklyn, and Clara come together and become an honest-to-goodness family while not trying to erase Jenna, Thomas's late wife and Clara's mother. The rest of the O'Grady men, aka Thomas's father and brothers, also piqued my interest, and there were major hints as to who Patrick and Matthew were going to be paired with when their books are released. Is it weird that I kinda, sorta, maybe, totally hope the O'Grady patriarch gets his own second shot at a happily-ever-after, too? Maybe with a certain sitter/neighbor? Either way, I'm quite eager to returning to Sugar Mountain and the O'Gradys! Four stars for Worth the Fall.
The dedication in Worth the Fall really set the tone for the whole book—it gave me goosebumps and made me feel connected to the story before it even began.
"Worth the Fall" by J. Sterling is such a cozy and sweet read! It's set in the charming small town of Sugar Mountain, where Thomas O'Grady, a single dad, runs a resort with his family. Thomas is pretty grumpy, but it's understandable—he’s been raising his daughter, Clara, alone since his wife passed away. Everything changes when Brooklyn, who’s just gotten out of a tough marriage, looking for a fresh start and lands a job at the resort. From the moment they meet, there’s this undeniable spark between them, but things get complicated since he's now her boss.
I really liked Brooklyn's character—she's brave for starting over and doesn’t hold back when it comes to standing up for herself. It’s refreshing to see her slowly build a bond with Clara, who completely stole the show with her funny and adorable moments. Honestly, all the O'Grady men are putty in Clara’s hands, and it’s heartwarming to see how much they love her.
Thomas's protective dad side is great, and watching him struggle to open up to Brooklyn while trying to protect both his and Clara's hearts made the romance feel genuine.
The family dynamic is one of the best parts, especially the teasing between Thomas and his brothers. It really sets up the series nicely, and I’m excited to see where the next books go. If you’re into single dad romances with strong family vibes and a charming small-town setting, this book is definitely worth picking up!
