Dragons are the enemy of the kingdom and Alice is now their master.
Living a life of grinding poverty in the General Laborer class, Alice’s only hope was the System someday notices her and rewards her hard work.
That day arrives when she discovers a A one-time chance to change from the lowest to the highest of classes.
Now she is a rare minion-master in charge of an ever-growing horde of dragons. Dragons that will not stay small and cute forever. As each grows and multiplies, so does her power.
I listened to the audiobook with my husband over a couple of road trips. This was my first lit RPG genre, and I didn't mind it. It was a bit confusing at times when they'd start going through the spec numbers, I think, because i couldn't see it. Ultimately, it didn't matter, and I was able to follow the story just fine. I enjoyed all the types of dragons and their distinct personalities and will be watching for more in this series.
A fantastic first entry to a new series. I like it better than your last series. Stayed up all night to finish it. Couldn’t put it down. Congrats I hope it goes far and exceeds your expectations as it did mine!
Continuing on my bit of a dragon kick in books, I next chose to read this book. In a world where a person's individual life skills and status are dictated by a mysterious "System", a young woman named Alice, whose status is the lowest of the low, finds and takes a chance to change her status, transforming her into a dragon master in the making. So how was the book?
Sadly, I was very disappointed in this. The story sounded intriguing, and it started off well, but soon it just started to go downhill when the story and the character motivations started meandering with no clear goal. As I said, the story starts off well, setting up the main character and her living situation smoothly, making her actions on changing her status understandable. Soon enough she obtains her first dragon, then starts obtaining more as she ventures into the outside world and stars to explore the possibilities her dragons and their varied abilities now grant her. But the problems start off soon enough, as the story starts to spin its wheels and seems to have no clear goal in sight. There's mainly a lot of going from point A to point B seemingly on a whim, and while some antagonists show up a couple of times, there seem to be just small obstacles rather than a clear goal, with the eventual confrontations lacking in excitement or tension. the narrative is also quite repetitive (how many times do we have to hear about Prim on Alice's shoulder, or making Alice look good and regal with her illusions) and with quite a few grammar mistakes
Having the main character we have here really doesn't help the book. Alice starts off as fairly likable and relatable, but that goes downhill soon enough, as her personality undergoes quite a change. She becomes often very selfish, arrogant, mean-spirited, and also fluctuating between a coward, an intense paranoid, and just an idiot. Her personality jumps all over the place, making her a very inconsistent character, not helped by how much the story leans on protagonist induced morality, instances when she's aggressive towards people or looks down on them for no reason (such as a moment when she's scandalized and annoyed at a person "telling her what to do" when said person is just letting her know how to stay safe against a threat she knows nothing about) and it makes her look as if she's in the right, or how often she steals and it's again portrayed as being totally okay because it's "for her dragons". With how inconsistent of a character Alice is, the one thing that was genuinely consistent about her was how badly she annoyed me.
With an unlikable protagonist, and a story that just shambles around with little to no clear goal, this book both disappointed and bored me, which is a huge bummer, because the idea of it sounded so good. It wasn't outright terrible, but it was still pretty bad. I won't be continuing this series.
A fun idea brought low by an inconsistent main character. She is presented as someone desperate to change her situation. Once given exactly that, she spends the rest of the book flipping between a coward and an unthinking fool. This was obviously just a setup book, so hopefully, this character can mature into someone worth reading about in book two.
A common of age story with a female MC involving dragons. Usually when I bump into a coming-of-age story with a female MC involving dragons, there’s inevitably a love interest thank goodness that is not here. Young girl gets a new class. Doesn’t know what to do has to go out into the world. Less action more adventure. Neither good nor bad just something you need to understand. Not every dragon is big fire breathing instead it’s more story driven. Good overall I didn’t want a bit more action, but more books will come in the future. Good from start to finish overall I would give it 4.5 stars.
Message to the author
Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers
I always write a message to the author for any book that I find good and compelling. I enjoyed the book from start to finish. It was more adventure and less action than I expected. I tend to crave more action than adventure, but this kept me entertained. I do have one issue and it’s pretty big, but it has to be mentioned the MC she has a class but she doesn’t have any skills herself. I realize the dragons are the driving force here, but I had hoped she would be able to do something. I thought it would’ve been nice that when she took on one of those other classes, you know as an illusion, she would get some skill, even if it’s just a level one scale, but she can’t do anything. I mean that in the literal sense she can’t do anything. Any other class placed in a room with her technically has more skill than her because she can’t do anything. The dragons do everything. I think that might be a bit of an issue. If you separate her from the dragons, she’s literally useless more useless than anyone else. Not to be critical, but that’s how the system here is working out so far. As I said, though good series, can’t wait to see what’s next. I thought the end was a bit predictable. I knew the nature dragon would become hers, but I thought we maybe should’ve got a little bit more violence at the end. One dragon bit another person in half and that was it. Again, I was looking for just a tad bit more action. Oh well, can’t wait to see what’s next. Keep up the good work.
I cannot abide stories that have "upper class" be mindless jerks and "lower class" are the morally upright and respectful citizens. It's not just boring, it's lazy writing. Do better.
Now, for the major downfalls of this series. Our MC is the lowest of the low, but I don't understand why. Even assuming that the rich are big meany heads, they still would want the most specialized laborers possible. Who wants a level 20 drone when you can have a level 20 gardener, maid, cook, or whatever? It further demonstrates a lack of understanding of human nature.
Also, where Did the MC get her education? They feed her slightly better than pigs but she understands concepts such as "intricate formulae". How does she even know how to sign her name much less Advanced Mathematics?
Not bad, though the character had some issues I can't quite put my finger on. Fun overall though. Not at all connected to the other series by the author, as I originally thought it might be.
Wow if you could see me right now, you'd see a grin going from ear to ear plastered across my face. Because I just finished reading She of Many Dragons, Honour Rae's newest creation! There are Dragons.🐉I loved every mesmerizing minute! And hey did I tell you that there are Dragons!!! As in many Dragons! And, I ask you who doesn’t need more Dragons in their lives? The book starts with Alice a General Laborer a low class worker who finds a class seed in the form of a golden egg layed by a prized hound along with a bunch of pups. A class seed would change her life forever, for good or bad. Should she open it, or should she sell it! 🤔 It really wasn't a decision at all, of course she'd tempt fate and trust in her chances. And when she opened the seed her class changed to 'She of Many Dragons' and a golden dragon popped out! Alice had been led to believe that Dragons were evil, controlled by dark magic, but as soon as she looked into the golden eyes she knew that this wasn't it just couldn't be evil! And it was her's. Skyrocketing it's way into my heart, and my top favorite book!!! So yeah go get the book and sit back enjoying the Dragons🐉 🐉 🐉 as they fly overhead!!!
I adored this story so much! I cannot absolutely wait for the next book! I definitely loved the narrator who made the book feel more alive and vivid. I can’t wait to see how this develops story wise. I love that she’s so confused on how it all works and the dragons have such personality to them!
The story just zips along. The main character is interesting. There’s the barest, tiniest, smallest, possible hint of romance for the main character. There were some unusual twists that I was not expecting towards the end. Nothing major, but it was neat. There’s not huge character, development, and growth , but the main character and dragon(s) we do meet are fun.
It’s a fun ride that’s worth your time .
Some light references to premarital activities by one of the characters, but also hint that doing something like that may not go well for that character. No graphic sex or violence across the story. Some mild thematic violence/adventure.
This was an excellent start to a new series. It is a delightful tale following our MC Alice, at the very bottom of the system ranks, as a General Laborer, who finds a system class seed enabling her to change the course of her life. I really enjoyed that the LitRPG aspect of the book was basically another term for class or caste system. When she opens the seed and changes her class to 'She of Many Dragons" and a little golden dragon hatches from the seed egg, I was hooked.
The world building was excellent and I was pulled in and couldn't put this down until I was done. I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series.
I recommend this for fans of Gamelit and would for sure read this with my son. An excellent little progression tale, with our MC leveling as a dragon tamer.
I was excited to have another book from Honour Rae after enjoying "All the Skills" series.
Alice who is ranked at the very bottom of the system as a "General Laborer" with very low skills and rewards. Then she finds a system class seed enabling her to change the course of her life. When she opens the seed and changes her class to 'She of Many Dragons" and a little golden dragon hatches from the seed egg.
After her rank changes, there is great adventures, new skills, more rewards and many dragons added to her as the story and her world advances.
The world building was excellent and I was pulled in and couldn't put this down until I was done. I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series.
I am not generally one for short books because I don't like getting attached to characters who leave too soon. This book, however, seemed just interesting enough to be worth a read. It was. I liked the unconventional twist to the normal way in which dragons and classes are used. I also appreciated the detail with which the society everything takes place in was described. It's not too much to be overwhelming. Not so little that you can't understand the driving forces behind Alice's thoughts. All the characters felt well rooted in the world and not like some alien who had never interacted with their own society before. So a good book. I enjoyed it.
Having read numerous different types of dragon stories, and having loved them all, I found myself wishing this book did not end as quickly as it did, a lot more than many others I have read. The way her character class, for want of a better term, interacts with the dragons she knows, without giving anything away, is wonderful and not something I have come across before.
I cannot wait for any sequels. There better be more than one. I won't be happy otherwise. 🤞
To be honest, I added this to my list when I heard about it and then waited a while for it to release. Had forgotten about it and was hesitant to read it due to my to be read list being extremely lengthy. But I'm glad I did. The book was amazing. I look forward to the next book. I love summoner type characters, and this was right up my alley. Check it out if you like dragons and/or the Summoner archetype. Well written and very interesting, please check it out.
For the love of little tiny cheese cubes, PLEASE indie authors, spring for a decent copy editor! If a characters name is spelled Brayden, there should not be two pages where it is spelled Braeden. There were several places where words were not correct. An "is" instead of an "isn't", for example. Overall, the story was quite good, pretty fast paced and the worldbuilding, while confusing at first, was pretty coherent. Did not fall into any massive tropes, but could have! I enjoyed the book and look forward to experiencing more journeys with Alice and her dragons!
She of Many Dragons is an excellent LitRPG. There was a lot of subtle world building. Alice begins questioning a lot of the social constructs and assumptions her society has given her. Her world would label her as a dark class simply because of her dragon friends, but she knows that they are good and helpful.
Each of the little dragons has different abilities and personalities. Alice grows from a general laborer who is looked down upon to a powerful problemsolver.
This was such a fascinating and cool start to a series! I love the personality of all the dragons so far and love the system and skills. It felt like a real progression of character for Alice and how she sees her self in this almost new world. She was very naive and is growing in confidence now! I do wish for some more world building and feats of strength from other characters. Overall, a great start and I can’t wait for more!
Fun read. Honour Rae is in my list of top 5 favorite authors in the LitRPG Genre. The released books are always well paced and edited very well (which is rare in the self publishing arena). All the Skills is one of my top 5 series in the genre and now I’m looking forward to the next release in She of Many Dragons
I absolutely loved this book. I binge-read it as soon as I finished the excerpt. I found it comforting that Alice was able to find her place and break out of the mold she was born into. The dragons are all adorable and I loved the world building. I can’t wait for the next book!!
Great book overall. Can’t wait for many more. A few seeming contradictory elements, such as starting with “you need a rare seed to change your class” to “if you do the stuff from a class it will change”, but overall make sense. Can’t wait to see how things progress. I can see this switching between slice of life style arcs and adventure/intrigue arcs.
Fair warning, this series has been dropped by the author according to the comment/review section on the webserial website it was first published on before it was published as a book.
Not worth getting invested in the story or characters only to never get a follow up book or learning only after reading the first one that the series will not be continued.
This book hits the ground running. The main character is interesting and has strong characterization throughout the story. The plot is good but not twisty. The world building is a bit light, but the build up of various mysteries is well executed and reflects the character's lack of knowledge.
Entertaining story about dragons (little and big), choices and growth. Being set in a role playing game scenario actually helps with the character development. It's a good book to recommend or read aloud. It is proof that one doesn't need swearing or graphic sex or violence for an excellent tale⁰
I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately but finished this in a day. I don’t always like fantasy that veers into litRPG but this one toed that line well for me. I’m excited to read future books in the series.
This was just as enjoyable as the " All the Skills" series. Alice is a hard working, honorable character that you can't help but like and cheered for. I look forward to the next book and seeing her dragon arsenal grow.
This is a nice little progression tale that is mild hybrid of gamelit and tamer style progression. The focus is on the little dragons and solving problem with them. They are all realised well and I found it a fun read. Thank you
This is one of the few books that if something happens and there is never a book two. I will still be very happy with the series. Though one the day there is a book 2. I will probably be reading it
