Write or Flight is marketed as a book for writers but offers valuable insights for any creative person.

As a visual artist, I found many of its ideas directly applicable to my practice. The book explores procrastination, impulsivity, and the delicate balance between pre-planned ideas and unexpected creative miracles.
One of the most striking sections compares writing to murder—an unusual but surprisingly effective analogy that made me reflect on my motivations. The discussion on circular writing reminded me of working in series as a painter, and the concept of a book vortex resonated deeply with my experience of living in a constant state of artistic awareness.

The book also challenges conventional wisdom: the idea that staring at a blank page will eventually lead to something didn’t entirely convince me, but I appreciated exploring how creativity emerges from action. Similarly, the notion that bad books can be more inspiring than good ones mirrors my belief that broken, imperfect things often hold the most creative potential.

One of my most practical takeaways was setting emotionally charged deadlines—I’ve now scheduled my upcoming art exhibition for my birthday, transforming the event into a goal and a celebration.

Overall, Write or Flight is an inspiring, thought-provoking read encouraging creators to embrace their unique process, find structure within chaos, and trust their instincts.

It is highly recommended for writers, artists, and anyone who struggles with creative resistance.

Useful for beginning writers

I have not read any books about writing before, so I do not know how they compare to this one. However, there was a lot of useful information and ideas for me in this book. I felt the author did a good job of identifying pitfalls, barriers and things to try to break out of them. I’ll be testing several of these ideas over the next few months as I work on my project!

A writer's book to creativity

I have just finished reading author Len Sone's book Write or Flight.

This is a very compelling book filled with a passionate and fascinating way to help one  place one's possible procrastination aside and get on with the writing of their books. With ideas and suggestions on a daily word and time schedule, remembering to use your own form of self care, to not "forgo sleep", to keep a healthy diet, take regular breaks and to keep your life as a writer realistic for each writers lifestyle and time of day you are at your best and your mind is the freshest.  If you employ a religious belief or deck cards or external advice to aid your writing, that is up to the individual. She applies in her Self-defense suggestions throughout the book is for writers who are coping with deadlines (or due dates) that can be very useful. Len Sone even discusses the front cover book design, which she created herself. Her book covers book editing, formating, and also self- publishing your book. Ms. Sone has AI discussions of it being something that is improving as some technology will do. I am not a writer who uses AI, but for those of you who think it is worth this approach, it would be their own personal choice.

I highly recommend buying a copy of Ms. Len Sone's book. Write or Flight is a real-world guide and a great overall refreshing point of view to help all writers get on with what we do.  Thank you so much, Ms. Len Sone, for taking the care and time to write your essential and also very necessary, thoughtful, thought- provoking book!

She consistently builds up to her sounding theme of her famously crafted phrase of

"Remember our battle cry: Writers write!

So go write your book.

Your loving friend, LEN”

My Review,
“ Readers have fun, the user experience is very different from the creator’s experience.”
You’ve always loved books and think writing one would be fun/cool. Then you try to write a book. And you find out it can be a difficult and tedious process. Len Sone offers tough love and practical solutions
“Playtime is over. Fun distractions are over. It’s time to sit down and complete the darn book”
Some principles
1. “To complete your book, you don’t have to be inspired.
Your mood feeds on progress”
2 “ Inertia gets worse the more time we spend away from writing .”
A truth I think most of us will acknowledge
3. “ If you stare at a blank page long enough something will come.”
It may not be brilliant, and you may not keep it, but at least you are writing and that in itself is progress. “trust that the words will come. The blank page is your friend”
4.” Serious writers have consistent time-intensive writing practices.”
Set aside time for writing and try to make it a few hours not a few minutes.
“it's comforting to know even the most talented need considerable time and effort to develop their brilliant ideas”
Examine your motivation to write, is it strong enough? Is it worth giving your book time and effort and with no guarantees that it will sell?
It suggests a regular writing practice where you spend a few hours at least three days a week writing. Inspiration can strike at any time, so take five or fifteen minutes to jot down the idea.
A section analysing why you want to write a book and why this particular book.

This book is a handy companion for the lonely writer. Our job is isolating; we sit at our desks, day by day, wondering if our efforts will get us anywhere. It's easy to quit, feel bad for ourselves, and forget why we write.

I write because I love it. But there are times the muse seems fickle. Enter Len Sone, tapping into the writer's anxiety, from finding your drive to examining the voice inside our heads, convincing us to give up.
Write or Flight is a comforting hug, a pat on the back, saying, "Hey, I see you. Keep going."

Sone's thoughts are insightful, offering advice on writing schedule hacks (such as circular writing) and nurturing inspiration. Sone briefly mentions spiritual aspects to writing, which she says you can take or leave, but I found it beneficial.
Easy to pick up and graze through when feeling a little down, Write or Flight will forever have a home near my work desk.

I love this book because it's an aid from a future self that is rooting for the writer that is stuck in time. It's like being pulled from the quicksand. All the excuses and problems that procrastination sits on, Len takes them away. On my way to finish my book!
