Baker Oaks #3

The Road Sometimes Taken

Rate this book
A bucket list. A trip of a lifetime. And her best friend’s brother.

Cara has been living a double life for ten years—her summers in Baker and the school year somewhere else. When the love of her life ends their decade-long relationship, she puts her heartbreak aside and decides it’s time to go back home. But when the opportunity arises to turn the move into the roadtrip of her dreams, she takes it. Despite the fact the only way to make it happen is to let her best friend’s little brother take the driving seat.

Manny’s only relationship he’s been able to keep is the one with his job. As co-CEO of Zabana Enterprises, he has built a reputation as the man who keeps things going. There’s no time for anything but work. He is a man of his word, and he will do what it takes to keep it. Even if it means following on a dare to take time off and drive his sister’s best friend—the same girl he’s had a crush on since he was a teen—back to her hometown. Now that he has decided to go, he’s making it his sole purpose to show Cara how incredible she is without breaking his own heart in the process.

Will three weeks be enough to mend a broken heart?

"Don't let other's shadows cast over your light but don't let yourself dim your own flame either. You are the sun, Cara. Never forget."

This book was such a delightful and heartfelt read! I adore road trip stories, and getting to experience all the places along with the main characters makes it even better. Cara has known Manny since they were kids; she’s his sister’s best friend, and their families are super close, spending a lot of time together. Manny has had a crush on Cara for ages but thinks she only sees him as an annoying little brother. When Cara decides to return to Baker Oaks, Manny wants to help her. But before that, Cara is going on a road trip she’s dreamed of her whole life. Knowing he doesn’t want her to go alone, Manny joins her. As they hit the road, visiting fun places and making memories, their connection deepens, and they can’t ignore their feelings for each other anymore. Still, they both have insecurities to tackle before they embrace a happy relationship.

"I love it when you say my name like that."
"How?"
"Like you want me to take you to the highest high and chase you all the way down as you fall."

Cara is such a ray of sunshine! Always smiling, dancing, singing, and spreading joy, she has the biggest heart. But underneath that bright exterior, she carries deep hurts and self-doubts that she usually keeps hidden so her friends don’t worry. This road trip is a chance for her to focus on herself and truly enjoy life. My heart went out to her, though I did find myself a bit frustrated when she was too hard on herself. It was beautiful to see her slowly open up to Manny and break down those walls. With the support of her friends and Manny, she starts to find her confidence and rediscover herself.

"Your freckles, Carita. You have the same amount of freckles as stars in the sky."

Then there’s Manny, young, successful, and a workaholic! He’s built a multimillion-dollar company with his twin brothers and rarely takes a break. I loved watching him become more carefree throughout the trip, realizing how important it is to find a balance between work and fun. His sweet, tender nature towards Cara shines through; he always reminds her that she is worthy and enough just as she is.

This book wonderfully captures the journey of self-discovery and healing. I enjoyed every moment of it! Both main characters face their challenges and watching them grow was truly inspiring. Plus, the theme of found family and friendship was so heartwarming. All their friendships play such important roles in each other’s lives!
Huge thanks to Ambar and Luna Literary for the amazing eARC!

✨ I loved this book so so much, the storyline, themes, Cara, Manny everything was so good. It's heartfelt, heartwarming, and full of emotions.
✨I loved Cara, watching her overcome her insecurities find her self-worth and love herself is one of the best parts of this book. I'm so proud of her and all the people around the world who no matter the circumstances find themselves again, fight against the darkness of self-doubt and just be them. 🫂💝
✨Manny!! He's such a cutie and a golden retriever man, I loved him so much. He's a workaholic and seeing him embracing joy alongside it was so beautiful and a heartwarming experience urging me to take it slow too, it's really important to live in small moments around us and enjoy them and be grateful for them as well.
✨Their chemistry was so cute, off the charts and just amazing.
Thank you so much ambar and Luna literary pr for the ARC!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STARS ✨

I absolutely adore everything Ámbar Córdova has written so far. Each book is so distinct, showcasing her incredible versatility and craft as an author. The Road Sometimes Taken is no exception—it’s heartfelt, relatable, and brimming with growth and emotion.

Cara’s journey deeply resonated with me. As someone who has felt the weight of self-doubt and the pressure to be everything for everyone, I saw so much of myself in her. Watching her shed her insecurities and embrace her worth was a cathartic experience. Her dynamic with Manny was beautifully written—tender, uplifting, and full of that undeniable spark.

And let’s talk about Manny: a golden-retriever-energy MMC who learns to let go of his workaholic tendencies and rediscover joy. The road trip to Florida becomes a transformative journey for them both, and seeing him lean into a more carefree, balanced version of himself was just as satisfying as Cara’s own growth.

This book is the perfect blend of romance and self-discovery, with the central theme of embracing your worth shining through on every page. It’s a feel-good story that sticks with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Anything Ámbar writes, I’ll read. Every single time.

Wow. The Road Sometimes Taken by @acordovabooks was amazing. I had all the feels on this road trip with Manny and Cara. Manny is a book husband, no questions asked. The besties (girl gang) top tier. Cara, I feeeel her pain throughout the book and guys you will too.

Truth or Dare started this road trip with childhood friends. Cara was moving back to her hometown and didn't want to drive alone when Manny was dared to take off from his million dollar company to help her bring her Pink Van Home. Manny doesn't back down from a dare and showed up on Cara's last day of teaching. Side note she is a special education teacher and that is just amazing. I work with people with intellectual disabilities and this just warmed my heart.

They decided they were going to a bucketless road trip, and guess what..Playboy Manny has always had feelings for Cara 😍

The amount of tension and steam coming off my kindle was enough for my own cold shower 🤣

If you like exploring, road trips, childhood friends, millionaires, sunshine and golden retrievers you will forever love this book as much as I did.

Favorite Scene: when the rain comes at the camp and they are dancing in the rain. Or when they were trying on Derby outfits
Favorite Quote: "Cara is like the sun and we’re just all in her orbit."

PS. The last chapter BROKE ME. Cannot wait for the next book💕

✨️Ambar does it again! I absolutely loved this book! This is my 2nd book I've read by Ambar, and both have been 5 star reads for me. I love her characters, especially the top tier MMCs that she writes. I love the storylines. I love the spice 🥵. I adored the bond that Manny and Cara formed, and the chemistry, ahhh 😍😍. I don't have a single bad thing to say about this. 10/10 would definitely recommend. Especially if you love a sweet golden retriever boy and a best friend's brother romance! ❤️

Thank you to Ambar Cordova and Luna Literary for allowing me to read and review this ARC ❤️.

I love reading books by Ambar Cordova!
This book did not disappoint! That acceptance that the characters give one another is priceless!
This is definitely a little different than what I'm used to. Only because it's not just a 2 year age gap but she is the older one. But what I like is that there is not much focus on the age.
These characters were so fun! The flirting and the protectiveness.. swoon. They go on a road trip together. But they don't realize the tension this forced proximity will create.

Ready to go on a road trip with Manny and Cara? Their story is sure to take you on an emotional ride.

Manny is our millionaire MMC who's basically married to his job. Young, successful, and extremely wealthy, Manny has never made time to seriously pursue and date anyone. Besides, how could he when he's been busy pining after his sister's best friend for the past decade or more?
Cara is our little hippie ray of sunshine. She's free spirited, caring, outgoing, a people pleaser, and has such a big heart. She's moving back to her home town of Baker Oaks, and getting out of an extremely toxic relationship. Hence she has a grand idea to make her trip back to Baker one big adventure in her lil hippie van. What she doesn't anticipate is making the trip with her best friends brother... All because of one little game of truth or dare. Cara's always been close to Manny, but three weeks together in the confines of her van has her spilling secrets, living out her buckets list of adventures, and falling for the wonderful man that is Manuel Zabana. The only problem is, Manny isn't the relationship type of man she wants. At least, that's what she keeps telling herself...

This story was so sweet. Manny was such a loving, kind-hearted, and sweet MMC. He went to great lengths to take care of Cara and show her he loves her. Their adventures were fun to witness and I enjoyed how Ambar set the scene for each place they visited on their road trip. Last but not least, I loved how we got to revisit with all of our other favorite characters from Baker Oaks!

***Critique + spoilers***
The reason this wasn't 5 stars for me was for a few reasons. It may have been my mood, but the story didn't hold my attention the whole time. The conflict felt like background noise, and didn't feel as big and emotional as it did in book 1, which I loved.
It was also hard to hear Cara constantly talk bad about herself, to the point it was almost redundant. No matter how much Manny or her friends hyped her up, it felt like she never got out of her own head.
One other thing that I noticed was it felt like tropes were thrown in here, unnecessarily, like the "wear the hat, ride the cowboy" moment. It didn't fit in my opinion.
All in all, I think I wanted more angst, and higher tension like in book 1.
Again, these are just my opinions.

“i will make sure every damn moment for the rest of this trip is worth a new bracelet for her.”

this started off as such a strong read, but unfortunately i didn’t love it by the end. manuel, however, i adored. he was my favourite character in this book, and i’ll forever love his golden retriever energy. cara on the other hand, i felt like she had a lot of growing up to do. manny was loving her out loud for so long and she kept disregarding his feelings for her, even as he was verbally telling her how he felt. there were several instances where cara would constantly berate and belittle herself, despite also telling herself that she’s worth it and deserving of things. i enjoyed their romance, the “they’re not you” trope, and how dedicated manny was to cara, not to mention how delicious he was when they were alone together, but this book was not for me, which is totally okay!

definitely going to look into this author’s other work, and if you read this book, i hope you enjoy it!

Cara’s long term bf has just broken her heart and she is making a huge change to move back home and start over. Though they were long distance and he still lives there, blech. She needs to move her super cute Barbie camper van/bus back and go on a road trip, with all her things.

This is interconnected heavily with the first two books in this series. You can read it as a stand alone but the first two romances are in this friend group or related to the two mcs so it helps to know the back stories. Honestly, read them all! They are so great!

Manny is Cara’s best friend's little brother, though now they are grown and just two years apart. He is tall and built and doesn't look like a kid anymore. I love all the flashbacks to when their age gap was huge when they were little and there were moments that she would help him or pay attention to him. Boy had a crush and held a candle for her all those years and she still thought of him as the annoying younger brother.

Their road trip was so fun and they did bucket list items along the way. He was actually very successful and hadn’t taken time off for years since he opened his business so this trip helped him with his priorities as well. Loved when they finally gave in but it was really hard since they both had been harmed by former relationships that they weren’t good enough or worked too much and wouldn’t be a good match. It is always good to voice your feelings cause odds are if you are vibing its gonna be received well.

Cara’s ex was awful, he was cheating on her with one of her friends and he still had to keep getting digs in. Once an abuser always an abuser. If someone has to break you down to make you better then they are not worth it. That has never helped anyone in the history of humans. It’s just narcissistic behaviour.

Loved her grand gesture after their little miscommunication at the end. It was really cute and loved her outfit choice!

We are back in Baker Oaks, and I couldn't be happier. I've loved this series, and getting to know these characters has been a delight. The Road Sometimes Taken is book three in this series, following Cara and Manny. I loved everything about their heartwarming, friends-to-lovers, slow-burn romance.

It doesn't get any better than Cara and Manny. Manny is so swoony, and Cara is very relatable. I loved these two together and couldn't get enough of them. They've known each other for a long time. Cara is Manny's sister’s best friend, and their families have spent a lot of time around each other. After ending a long-term relationship, Cara decides to head back home to Baker Oaks. She plans to make a road trip out of it, and a dare puts Manny in the position to join her. Although Cara initially pushes back, they eventually embark on the journey of a lifetime.

While on the road, their connection deepens, and they finally face their feelings for each other. Not only did they find each other, but they also found themselves. Their journey was one of healing and self-discovery. I loved the growth each character experienced and how they worked to overcome their insecurities. The Road Sometimes Taken reminds us of the importance of balance, friendship, and doing what makes us happy.

Thanks to Ambar Cordova for the gifted eARC. Opinions expressed are my own.

All the stars. Manny and Cara 🥹 Ambar never fails to invoke all of the emotions out of me. This story had all the feels: emotional, heartfelt, heart-wrenching, spicy and more. I saw so much of myself in Cara, especially with feeling like you aren't worthy of real love because of a man you wasted too many years on. There were multiple instances where she was suffering with these thoughts and I had tears streaming because I related so hard. Manny is such a dream man and he did everything in his power to show Cara that she is more than worthy of an epic love. The road trip was fun and made you feel like you lived vicariously through Cara and Manny. If you have read this whole series, you get to see the other couple (mainly Allie and Jake from TTNS) throughout this and I LOVED it because those two babies hold such a special place in my heart. Cara was such an intricate character and even though she was literally the life of the party and was the strong one when everyone else needed her, you get to experience her inner thoughts and know that she is often masking the negative feelings about herself. I just related so hard to all of that. Then you top it off with her being a Special Education teacher like me? It was just perfection and had me really in my feelings lol. Manny and Cara were able to heal each other in so many ways in this story; it was so special to read.

Here we are once again with Ambar absolutely knocking it out of the park!! I am continuously amazed at how she is able to write characters that are so different and do them justice every single time! The MCs of each of her books always complement each other perfectly and I would love to be a fly on the wall of her author brain.

In this story, we have Manny who is a workaholic with an incredibly soft heart and calming energy and Cara who is high strung, spunky and a bit broken from her previous relationship. Together, they embark on a road trip where they each find balance and peace both in each other and on their own. Their story is a beautifully written slow burn where all of the slow adds to the burn of it instead of detracting from it. And the spice.....ohhhhh the spice. When you get there, it is *chef's kiss*

Not only do we get to witness the amazing journey these 2 go on, but also cameos from some of our favorite characters from previous books as well as meeting new ones to set up for future Baker Oaks stories. I look forward to seeing whose (I have my suspicions) story comes next!

A huge thank you to Ambar for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. And thank you Ambar for always being willing to let me vent and squeal and geek while reading! Can't wait for the next adventure ❤️

She’s the fixer, the glue. The one who reminds everyone else how much they’re worth. But there’s no one to remind her.

Welcome back to Baker Oaks!

Manny. MY MAN MANUEL WHY ARE YOU FICTIONAL CHARACTER?!
The most patient, respectful, reassuring, caring, thoughtful, loving and rich MAN. He really is such a golden retriever, the way he called Cara , Carita Mia and sunshine made me melt🥲 He made this roadtrip so much more, not only did he take time for himself but he learned about himself and gave them the perfect trip for a beautiful love story!!

“You’re too pretty to beg, sunshine. You deserved to be spun around on the dance floor, especially to a slow song.”

Cara, my love. You are so down to earth , are a Special Education and THAT FRIEND. She was reminded to be unapologetically herself, she really gives you the meaning of living your life. the bracelets meaning?! I was SOBBING. And the RAIN SCENE?! It reminded me of the Notebook when Allie and Noah are dancing in-front of the movie theater. PERFECT, just like them💗

“We love the sun but we need the rain too.”

I can’t wait for what’s next! Until next time Baker Oaks✨

What a way to start my reading year. Who doesn’t love a friends to lovers on an emotional journey.

“𝘞𝘦’𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘭𝘭 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦—𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳. 𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵, 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘢?”

This is a new to me author and I can’t wait to read more of her books.

While this book centres around an epic road trip, it’s soo much more than that. This is a journey about life and healing. It’s about enjoying every moment.

Cara and Manny are just couple goals. They really brought out the best in each other. I loved the way Manny broke down all of Cara’s walls to show her she’s worth so much more than she believes. And the way Cara showed Manny how to just slow down and appreciate the moment instead of holding the weight of the world on his shoulders.

This is a slowww burn but once you get there the chemistry and spice is off the scales.

The road trip was so much fun the read about. I’ve definitely got some new experiences to add to my list. I loved every second.

If you’re wanting a sweet heartfelt romance which has you in your feels definitely check this one out.

Baker Oaks #3 is my new fav in the series!! (Ok I say that every time but I love when all books in a series are equally awesome!) Absolutely adored Cara and Manny!!! We have two lifelong friends going on a road trip and discovering not only a new romance but more about themselves - it’s simply beautiful!

A good friends to lovers has to be very gradual - no one throws a lifelong friendship away over lust and these two have the sweetest build up. The stops on the road trip are fun, realistic (I appreciated that they were normal activities and relatable), and help us learn more about Cara. I loved that workaholic Manny would only take vacation time for her - it reminded me of my corporate husband!

The spice was solid in this book - the scene outside a certain bar was particularly memorable! Baker Oaks always has men who prioritize their partners which I adore in a romance.

Cara is just the kindest person and you can really see why she’s Allie’s bff. I can’t wait for book 4!

"You're like a sunflower; you need your feet on the ground and your face toward the sun."

"Go ahead and try to erase that kiss from your mind, sunshine. I dare you to try. I'll be here waiting for you to tell me when you can't."

“I don't like spending a lot of time with many people in general but with you? With you, I could spend a lifetime."

First off i would like to thank Ambar for the opportunity to read & review this book. Thank you for this gifted E-Arc.

Cara & Manny
OMG 😭😭 THESE TWO!!! i love them your honor. These two sunshine souls are both struggling to see what the truly deserve & after a hard brake up Cara makes a road trip plan to get her old self back. After a night drinking and a dare Manny ends up on this road trip with Cara. The way they bond and slowly become vulnerable and let the other truly see them is so beautiful. They both have the same outlook on life while beings slightly different. Cara feels like she's too much and never enough to be loved, while Manny feels like he doesn't deserve to be loved cause he's married to his job. I absolutely adore how Cara shows Manny to slow down and enjoy life and cut back on work & i love how Manny shows Cara she isn't too much & how to be her true self. These two heal each other and show that you can still be loved even with all your flaws and the way Manny proves he wants Cara with actions and not fancy words is beautiful. The chemistry between them is off the charts.

5/5 recommend this book. Ambar really out her showing us girlies that being our loud rambling outspoken selfs its okay to be us and our love will still show up & absolutely love us for it is beautiful & lets me feel so seen 🥺.

Cara and Manny

A cute best friend brother love story! If you like a cozy and enduring small town romance, this is the book for you. I love how strong the FMC is and how we see her cracks, while still trying to be the glue and ray of sunshine for everyone else. Cara wants to get past what her ex-boyfriend did to her but he’s constantly in her head. In comes Manny, on a dare from his sister ( also Cara’s best friend)he embarks on a road trip with Cara who he has had a childhood crush on forever, but just has never had the right moment to tell her. He will do anything in his power to not have her light dim and to see her smile. He is a workaholic that takes time to learns how to prioritize the things that really matters. She learns that she deserves so much love and that her expectations have been clouded on someone who was so selfish to never consider her feelings and never wanted to do anything that she did.

I dived into The Road Sometimes Taken and it truly captivated me. This was my first experience with Ambar Cordova’s writing, and I’m eagerly looking for more of her work.

The story centers around the emotional journey of Cara and Manny, showcasing their growth and connection during a charming road trip. I found their dynamic refreshingly relatable; both characters have their own struggles, and watching them support each other was heartwarming. Manny, in particular, stood out to me as a thoughtful and attentive partner, which made their bond all the more special.

The road trip aspect was a delightful backdrop, evoking nostalgia for my own adventures, and I loved how it highlighted the beauty of moments enjoyed together. The pace felt just right, slowly building up the chemistry until it became almost palpable.

If you’re looking for a heartfelt romance that balances fun and depth, I highly recommend this book. Trust me, it’s a journey worth taking!

I absolutely loved Cara, the FMC of this story so much. I found myself relating to her several times and rooting for her the whole time. The MMC, Manny, is also a cutie and I loved the chemistry between him and Cara. I loved watching both of the characters grow and go on their self discovery and healing journey. I loved the roadtrip and the fun they had along the way. This book was done very well and it makes me so excited to read more from the author.

This town of Baker Oaks holds a sweet place in my soul because not only is it set in my home state of #Florida and I get to see @acordovabooks often, but the heart these stories share is so beautiful! 🥹

The FMCs are strong and smart and beautiful and struggle with insecurities. This series brings to light how these women discover their self worth through the eyes of someone who loves them. It’s such a beautiful way to show how we can heal our wounds surrounded by the right support.

Cara and Manny are the sweetest couple!! I enjoyed their adventures, watching their childhood crushes for each other grow into something more and the spice was nice 🧊(per usual)!! 🥰🫶🏼

I honestly think Manny and Cara just tied as my favorite Baker Oaks couple!

Manny’s patience with Cara, knowing her past and his feelings. The smoothness and comfort of him. Obsessed!

My sweet Cara. The guarding of the heart. The love and loyalty to her people. The finding it hard to rely on people. 100% me.

Absolutely loved them🥹

Cara and Manny for the win.
Ambar sucked me in, in the first chapter of The road sometimes taken.
Manny and Cara start out as “friends” and head the way of lovers at slow burn pace.
Manny and Cara embark on the road trip of a lifetime on the way back to Baker Oaks.
Ambar makes us cry, laugh and fall in love with this couple.

This book is such a heartfelt and charming read, I couldn’t get enough of Manny and Cara. Cara has been best friends with Manny’s sister for years, so she and Manny have known each other for what feels like forever. When Cara decides to move back to Baker Oaks, Manny joins her on a road trip back home. Along the way, they visit places they've always dreamed of seeing, and the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to ignore the undeniable spark between them. When they finally give in to their feelings, their connection is as deep as it is beautiful, but life’s challenges soon make them question if their love is strong enough to last. With a swoon worthy MMC and a sunshine filled FMC whose chemistry is off the charts, this story is a must read.

Thank you, Ambar Cordova for the ARC.

This was sadly a DNF for me.

While the story itself sounded interesting, the beginning felt off for me and I couldn't really get into it. I found myself skimming through the longer paragraphs and wasn't really connecting with the characters.

There's nothing wrong with the book, it just simply wasn't for me! I see others who enjoyed it so definitely still give it a try.

As always Ambar killed it again with this book! And having past characters all in this book tugged at my heart strings so much! I love love love Ambar and her writing, she gets you so hooked instantly and never fails to have you go through all the emotions in her books! I love how Cara and Manny both evolved so much throughout this book and how they realized what they wanted out of life. Manny being a workaholic and Cara not knowing what she truly deserved! I don’t want to spoil anything but this may be my favorite book yet! Which is hard to say because every story is so perfect by her!

Another amazing book by Ambar 😍
Reading Manny and Cara’s story was an absolute rollercoaster and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!

I absolutely love that Cara has been a side character from day one in Baker Oaks and we loved her immediately- but turns out, we knew very little about who she truly was.

As Cara gets ready to move and start over, she decides she wants to make a roadtrip out of the journey. Workaholic Manny is a longtime friend and is suckered into the trip. This journey quickly becomes the once in a lifetime adventure Cara had only dreamt about.

Thank you Ambar for allowing me to be apart of your team. I have loved every second of living in Baker Oaks through your words.
