In a realm whose many civilizations have turned on one another after years of cultural intolerance, greed, and bloody battles for power, Aurelia Brentwood serves as Queen of Akkinor, the realm’s most influential nation. Her reign is interrupted by an uprising orchestrated by those who prefer to see a man on the throne. Alone and betrayed, Aurelia makes the harrowing journey to the western continent of Carthe: a treacherous, unfamiliar place predisposed to hatred of Akkinorians. Aurelia must put her faith in strangers as she travels to Taundosa, the City of Gold, in search of allies and answers.

As Aurelia’s negative opinions of Carthe and its people change throughout her journey, she’s given the opportunity to make history by securing the allies she needs to defeat her enemies. At the same time, she realizes that her own subjects are not the only ones desperately in need of a just, selfless ruler. The people she once viewed as heathens and barbarians are now turning to the Queen of Akkinor for salvation - all while the people of Akkinor wonder if their true leader will ever return to rescue them from a usurper’s cruelty.

What begins as a quest to reclaim her throne becomes the fulfillment of something long forgotten by all: an individual’s ability to restore peace to the realm by accomplishing the unknown. Aurelia’s story becomes the catalyst for a chain reaction of events that threaten to tear the realm apart even further - or, if the gods are kind, to unite the realm as never seen before.

Admittedly, I am not the target audience for this...

A grand adventure, with lots of good world building, and an adventurous plot. I enjoyed following the MC, and was impressed with the strong story telling of this debut author.

I think this is more aimed at a younger female audience, maybe under 30 crowd, If that's you, you'll like this book.

"Men who crave power will always fall to formidable women."

Forged in Gold is an epic fantasy that delivers a rich, immersive world and a gripping story of resilience, betrayal, and determination.

The world building was AMAZING. From the intricate kingdoms, and Aurelia's journey to reclaim her throne, every detail pulls you deeper into the story.

The storytelling is vivid and compelling, with descriptions that paint every scene in sharp detail. It's more than just a fantasy novel, it's a story of a strong woman rising from the ashes of betrayal to fight for her rightful place.

This book is quite thick, and it took me some time to really get into it. But once I grasped the story and followed the plot, I was hooked and thoroughly invested in Aurelia's journey.

If you love epic fantasies with strong heroines, rich settings, and a plot full of twists and emotional depth, Forged in Gold is a MUST read.

This was quite the adventure, and I'm so looking forward to what comes next!

This book is a masterpiece.

Honestly, it may be the best-written book I've read all year. It is excellent! It's nearly flawless! The storytelling was engaging. The world building was incredible - I could easily create pictures in my head of every single place, but never was anything over embellished or over explained. We learned a lot about the world through conversations, which I love and prefer over long drawn out paragraphs like a history book. The character development was rich. The pacing was perfect. I really loved the multiple 3rd person POVs, even some that were of random side characters that were unexpected. It made the story more colorful and rich. I cannot wait to see where this story goes. Katelyn Schoumaker is definitely one of my top new authors!

Despite being book 1 of a series I feel like so much was wrapped up at the end and we weren't left on a crazy cliffhanger. If you're a reader who prefers to wait until a series is complete, I think you'll find that you enjoy reading this series as it's released.

“Upon restoring harmony and unity to the realm, the Ones Forged in Gold
would weep golden tears as the gods had before them, and humankind would
awaken to greet a new age of salvation.”

I mean… this was absolutely phenomenal regarding the world building and story building for these characters. I am seriously BLOWN away by how much information was provided without getting overwhelming. Learning the characters, the lore of the countries, magic, royal politics, storylines, the main character POV’s, and the BETRAYAL!! I followed along just fine and was glued to the book whenever I had a chance to read. Katelyn put a glossary at the end to help with annunciations and better understanding of words, names, characters, towns, cities, etc. The map in the front of the book is extremely helpful in getting your bearings of where you are and where you’re going with Aurelia on her journey.

Jack is a wonderfully intelligent man who is fun, protective, loyal beyond belief, and that little bit of annoying Aurelia needs in her life. He comes in full swing saving her and she tries to stay secretive out of fear for his safety and hers while traveling through land she’s never been through before. Falling for each other along the way, this is a 1-2 level closed door spice, which was welcomed and I was fully engulfed in everything else going on. The twists and turns in this book are great and I truly enjoyed the warfare and the brilliant moves Aurelia made for her country. I could not recommend this more. 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I adore Aurelia’s tale! It was perfectly paced throughout its entirety. It manages to keep you wrapped in her world. While fervently wanting to continue and reach the end you also want to soak in every detail about Aurelia’s journey from Queen to refugee in hiding and fighting for survival in hopes to return to her people and rebuild. The characters are written so beautifully that they come to life while reading. Getting to know each one and how they help make Aurelia a better person and queen is amazing.

We start off early in Aurelia’s life while spending time with her father, the King, telling Aurelia about “The Ones Forged in Gold”. People of great influence that are to bring about peace during trying times. It is said in their legends that the “Gold Ones” wept tears of gold.

The King and Queen meet their untimely demise upon their ship at sea leaving Aurelia and her brother, Archibald, behind and causing Aurelia to take the Throne earlier than anticipated. While many are pleased with Aurelia’s reign and the progress the kingdom has made under her guiding hand, many would prefer to have a man on the throne.

One night Aurelia is roused from sleep by her most trusted advisor and Hand of the Queen Linden. He informs her that the palace is under siege and they need to remove her from the palace to ensure her safety. We follow her on her escape to another country where she is chased by many assassins and has to learn whom she can and cannot trust… even those closest to her. Can she secure her reign again? Only time will tell.

Forged in Gold was an enjoyable start to my reading year! This fantasy-heavy romantasy delivers an adventurous journey through a new world filled with unique regions and cultures. I loved the vivid world-building and the sense of discovery as we followed the main character’s path. The setting felt well-developed, and exploring it alongside the protagonist kept me engaged throughout.

When it comes to characters, I didn’t find myself forming deep emotional connections with any of them, which is something I often look for in my favorite reads. However, the personalities written into the characters added charm, and I appreciated their dynamics. The relationship between Aurelia and Jack was sweet and refreshingly different from many fantasy romances I’ve read. Without giving too much away, I was pleased that (spoiler alert!) the story avoided the predictable “argument, break-up, and reconciliation” trope, which made their bond feel steady and genuine.

It’s worth noting that while there is a romantic element, this story leans more heavily into its fantasy aspects. The romance is subtle, closed-door, and not a slow burn compared to some other books in the genre. That being said, it was still a pleasant addition to the narrative and complemented the overall tone of the book.

I would recommend Forged in Gold to anyone looking to dip their toes into romantasy. It’s a great starting point for readers who want a fantasy-forward story with light romance and prefer to ease into the genre before diving into more open-door narratives.

it was an enjoyable read with enough intrigue and charm to keep me entertained. A solid pick for fans of fantasy with a touch of romance!

It took a while to get this one finished due to ✨ buisy life✨. But GIRL, did I cry at the end? Yes, yes I did. I can’t spoil why but I have some questions miss Katelyn 🙈. I did like it tho. The writing is very clear, everything is explained in a way you understand it immediately. Worldbuilding, characters, the history, … all very good and clearly written. The only thing that perhaps some readers might need to “get used” to is the third person writing style and the jump from reading what the main characters are doing to the little characters. I quite liked that I could read everything, even the villains mind and what he was up to and his way of thinking. I loved Aurelia as a monarch, she reminded me a little of Sisi (Empress Elisabeth), not in every way but in some ways of ruling. She’s a strong FMC wich we always love, she is sweet, empathetic but has the fire and the tempor of a dragon 🤭. And offcourse there is a little romance in the book and a little plot twist there. I couldn’t figure out what it was until it happend so I loved the surprise with that 🤭. The book is like I said with a little romance but it is mainly focused on the kingdom ruling and the adventures of the FMC, so if romantasy books with harder focus on the fantasy part is your cup of tea this one is definitely for you.

I received a complimentary ARC from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

It took a few chapters for me to get really into this book, but it was a phenomenal read. It joins many epic fantasies in the journey to find yourself and hopefully save the world category. Also, the characters you are supposed to like (and some that you aren’t) are adorable. I also recommend tissues.

Overall a very enjoyable fantasy read! Extensive world building, character development and a strong plot that maintained throughout the book. The author did a good job of connecting the reader with the story. Loved when moments or characters tie back in later in the book. There is very no spice as this is a closed door romance, but I loved it anyway.

The reason I gave it a 4 of 5 stars was it did take me a minute to get into the story (probably related to coming off an Onyx Storm high), but once I was in the story I couldn’t stop!

Looking forward to the second book!

This book was beautifully thought out and I adored Aurelia and was rooting for her from the beginning. The plot was easy to follow and there was always something interesting happening to catch your attention. The end was filled with excitement and I was screaming and crying. I was impressed with myself as I predicted the ending. Such a good fantasy book, I was immediately hooked and can’t wait for the next in the series.

Lots of world building and character development that felt a little slow at times but wasn't a bad read. It is an original romantasy with some popular tropes. There was a lot of build up that was probably needed since it's a trilogy so I'll look forward to seeing where this story goes.

Forged in Gold
by Katelyn Schoumaker
5 outof 5 🌟

This is a masterfully woven tale of power, exile, and self-discovery set in a world where alliances are fragile and prejudices run deep. At its core, the book challenges readers to question the nature of leadership, the weight of legacy, and the complexities of cultural perception.

Aurelia Brentwood, Queen of Akkinor, is a figure caught between two worlds—the one she knew and ruled and the one she must now navigate as an outsider. Forced to flee her kingdom after a politically motivated rebellion seeks to remove her from power, Aurelia’s journey to the western continent of Carthe becomes more than a quest to reclaim her throne; it’s a journey into the unknown, testing her resilience and opening her eyes to the diversity and nuance of other civilizations. Carthe, depicted as a land of fierce independence and cultural pride, has long harbored resentment toward Akkinor. Schoumaker’s ability to depict both Carthe’s hostility and its potential for empathy and alliance is where the novel shines, offering a balanced perspective on what it means to be an outsider seeking acceptance.

What sets *Forged in Gold* apart from other epic fantasies is its focus on the evolution of personal and cultural identity. Aurelia’s journey is not just about reclaiming power; it’s about reconciling her perception of herself as a queen with her emerging understanding of leadership beyond borders. She begins to see that Carthe’s hatred toward Akkinorians, while misguided, is rooted in real wounds caused by generations of conflict. The nuanced portrayal of her changing perspective raises thought-provoking questions about the power of empathy and the importance of understanding others beyond stereotypes and history.

Schoumaker also does not shy away from exploring the burdens of leadership, showing Aurelia’s internal struggle as she confronts the reality that her own people may not even want her back. The tension between duty and personal transformation is compelling, adding depth to Aurelia’s character and keeping readers invested in her fate.
Forged in Gold is not just an adventure-it's a meditation on the complexity of alliances, the shadows of past conflicts, and the courage it takes to lead with both strength and compassion. It sets the stage for a trilogy where peace, unity, and power hang in the balance.

Forged in Gold by Katelyn Schoumaker is an epic triumph of character, worldbuilding, and heart. At its core, this is a story about one woman’s strength to lead—not just through titles or bloodlines, but through compassion, open-mindedness, and unshakable will. Queen Aurelia Brentwood’s journey from betrayed monarch to reluctant symbol of unity is as emotionally resonant as it is politically riveting.

The novel opens with high stakes: Aurelia, a capable and morally grounded ruler, is ousted by those who cannot stand the idea of a woman in power. But instead of folding beneath the weight of betrayal, she embarks on a dangerous journey to Carthe—a land known for its disdain toward her people. What follows is a transformative arc not just for Aurelia, but for the very fabric of the realm. Her shifting perspective on the “barbaric” cultures she once looked down on becomes one of the most poignant elements of the novel, masterfully handled with nuance and care.

Taundosa, the glittering City of Gold, and the broader world of Carthe are richly imagined—vivid in detail, politically complex, and filled with both beauty and tension. As Aurelia fights for alliances, she doesn’t just seek to reclaim her throne—she begins to embody the kind of ruler all the fractured nations desperately need.

Katelyn Schoumaker’s prose is elegant and purposeful, delivering both grand cinematic moments and deeply intimate emotional beats. The story’s themes—of prejudice, power, hope, and unity—resonate deeply without ever feeling heavy-handed. Aurelia’s leadership, laced with vulnerability, becomes not just admirable but aspirational.

Forged in Gold is a golden beacon of what fantasy can achieve when it marries political depth with emotional richness. It’s not only a tale of reclaiming power—it’s a story of redefining it. Bold, thoughtful, and profoundly moving, this is a must-read for fans of feminist high fantasy and transformative hero’s journeys.

Aurelia Brentwood, the Queen of Akkinor, is forced into exile after a rebellion threatens her life. As she seeks refuge in Carthe, a foreign land with deep-rooted tensions against her homeland, Aurelia faces both the constant threat of assassins seeking her head, and the internal struggle of her worthiness as a leader, making for a gripping journey of survival and self-discovery. Forged in Gold is a standout fantasy debut that blends rich world-building, compelling characters, and a thrilling plot filled with political intrigue and adventure.

If You Enjoy:
⭐️ Strong Women Leadership
⭐️ The Hero's Journey
⭐️Political Turmoil
⭐️ Forced Proximity
⭐️One Bed Trope

Then this is a story for you!

This book's greatest strength is its' world-building: with immersive, easy-to-follow political unrest and intricate lore. The pacing is well-balanced, offering our FMC moments of action, reflection, and emotional depth. Aurelia’s character is strong and engaging, and I found myself rooting for her from the very beginning. Her transformation from a confident ruler, to a fugitive in a foreign land, and her determination to rise again make for an emotional and compelling journey. While romance plays a secondary role, the connection between Aurelia and Jack is steady and refreshing, and does not take away from her self development.

Though it takes a few chapters to fully immerse in the story, the momentum quickly builds, leading to an exciting and satisfying conclusion. Forged in Gold is a compelling fantasy novel that delivers a powerful tale of leadership, survival, and transformation. Highly recommended for fans of epic adventures, strong heroines, and intricate political intrigue.

Thank you for the ARC, I can't wait to read Book 2!

let me start this off by saying that if there is anything that Katelyn Schoumaker has, it is THE AUDACITY because why was my heart ripped out of my chest repeatedly??? okay, but really Forged in Gold has a way of sucking you so deep into the story, everything feels PERSONAL, okay? the characters in this story all have such a deep background that it is impossible not to be attached to them (or to hate them with a passion). miss katelyn said no to meaningless little side characters!

this book is so worth the read!! the action was insane and the author did an amazing job with the detailed scenes to really make sure that the knife struck too and was TWISTED if you know what i mean. 😩 it is a powerful story that shows a woman who will go to the ends of the earth for the justice to her kingdom and her people and i think everyone needs to give it a go. 💛

4.5 ⭐ spice rating 🌶
This was a great story with a well thought out and thoroughly developed world and characters! I loved all the little details of the world-building; it completely immerses you into their realm. One of my favorite details was the way their accents are described. I thought it was such a fun touch! I also really enjoyed the lore and history. It let you understand the characters beliefs and gave the story so much more depth.
Aurelia is a force to be reckoned with. She is a fierce and selfless revolutionary of her world! I love that this epic tale not only showed the trials and tribulations she endured in her hero's quest but also her intellectual humility. It was also intriguing seeing little snippets of different sides of the story from secondary characters. I loved getting to see all aspects of the picture. The side plot of romance was very sweet and endearing. The mmc is so tender the way he comforts and encourages her. I also absolutely loved all the surprises; I never saw them coming!
I can't wait to get my hands on the next one! Thank you so much for the ARC!

Overall Rating: 3.5 👑👑👑

I was very glad to be chosen as park of Katelyn's ARC readers for her trilogy. As the first book in the series this was definitely a book that grew on me as I read! I really enjoyed the character development of our FMC and the story that got told as we learning more of her background and who she realized she was as a person. At times I think I got a bit confused on some items or was unsure why some pieces or pov's were inserted but I understand author choice. I'm interested to see how the series continues in book two! Below is the spoiler free version:
• Author: 3/5 - style was generally my liking but sometimes felt like not a cohesive voice
• Plot: 4/5 - very interesting, I like how it expanded especially once I got to the later third of the book
• Spice level: .5/5 - just a hair not a big point which is okay!
• Readability: 2.5/5 - hand to push myself to read sometimes
• Characters: 3/5 - i think there is only 2 I really enjoy right now, very good but everyone else needs/needed some additional help
• Favorite character: I really like an older character that comes into play (don't want to spoil) you'll get it if you read it so I don't spoil
• Would I recommend: In support of small self-published authors Katelyn has done amazing! I love the artwork at the top of each chapter as well. I feel like it's a good series maybe for introducing readers to fantasy/younger audience.

Forged in Gold is a brilliant standout debut that combines rich world-building, an adventurous plot, with masterful storytelling. The story explores themes of leadership, legacy, and cultural perception, adding depth to the thrilling adventure.

I am a lore and mythology nerd when it comes to books and the lore and mythology of Akkinor are intricately woven into the narrative, perfectly in this book.

With a captivating protagonist and a plot that never loses momentum, this book is both thought-provoking and emotional. Recommended for fans of epic adventures and richly imagined worlds.

This book. Slower paced at first this beginning sets up Aurelia and the plot so well by the end you are just left in astonishment. Katelyn's characters are so vivid you will love them and hate them (the bad guys). I cried multiple times at some of the most tender scenes. She really just takes your emotions for a ride. You will literally feel a wide range of emotions even in just one chapter let alone the range you will feel in the whole book! I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I picked it up but I know its a book that will stay with me in my thoughts for a long time to come!

A wonderful opening book to the Golden One trilogy and a book that has made me a fan of Katelyn Schoumaker. Aurelia's journey from her home and country after a failed assassination attempt and the struggles she deals with in a foreign country are alleviated by Jack. Jack is also on the run from his past, and once the two are together, the chemistry is fantastic. Overall, it was a great book, I'm currently reading the second book and can't wait for the finale out later this fall.
