In a list of what’s most important to me, three things are right up there at the top. My kids, my husband Mack, and my career I’ve spent my life building. Unfortunately that career has me away from home more than I'd like, and when I refuse to walk away from it, my husband walks away from me instead.
Living together post-divorce makes sense for us, but it blurs the lines between what we were and what we have. Now that I’ve scored a big promotion and negotiated twelve long weeks at home, memories of our life together haunt me. They make me long for what we had. And now that Mack is moving on with someone else, I’m being faced with the cold truth. I should never have let Mack go, and now it might be too late to get him back.
Mack
Twelve weeks. It’s the longest Davey has been home since we had the kids, and all it does is remind me of everything I wish I still had. So I decide this is it. I have twelve weeks to remind Davey of everything he lost and hope like hell when I give him the choice between work and me again, that this time he chooses me.
None of my friends are on board with my plan, and the new guy in town is trying his hardest to win me over. But I can ignore cute notes slipped into my favorite books if it means getting back the man I’ll love forever.
All I need to do is remind him our life together was perfect.
Now if only our kids, our friends, and his work would get the memo …
I love a second chance romance and I have a soft spot for stories about MCs who are or used to be married, so I had to give this a try. I quite enjoyed the story up to the point when they decided to give their relationship one more chance. It fizzled out for me in the second half, but I liked how it ended and how things worked out for them.
I was wondering about those two years they spent separated, though. It didn't feel believable to me, since they continued to live together. It was only now that Davey got more time off his work that Mack suddenly decided to fight for them. I would have found it more realistic had that time been shorter of if they'd been in the process of getting a divorce. But I did enjoy the angst in this one.
Is there a book about Luke? I liked Luke.
Excellent narration from Nick J. Russo. The audiobook was a freebie, so thank you, author!
Not Saxon James making me cry in the fucking prologue 🥹🥹🥹🥹
I was not expecting to be so emotional reading this, but it was SO relatable that I couldn't help myself!
The resentment and feeling like a single parent... Totally got it. But I also saw Davey's side too. They were both right but also both wrong, and I know that doesn't make a lot of sense but I stand by it 😂
I think what made this for me was how they each work on themselves so that they can work on their relationship and find a compromise - which is really not an easy thing to do.
I identified with Mack so fucking much because it really is so easy to lose your identity when you become a parent, especially if you're a stay at home parent and you put your kid first without thought. Been there, still figuring it out!
Honestly think that this is my favourite of Saxon's solo books.
The last book in this series is not only the best in this series, but dare I say the best book by Saxon James ever.
I absolutely loved this, couldn't put it down, was up until 3:30 am reading it and I didn't want to put it down but only sleep could make me do that.
Mack and Davey's story was compelling from the jump. Some people don't like second chance romance, but I love them. Having messed up, but then learning how to do better and become stronger for it.
Seeing them at their lowest, and then getting to their highest point was a treat to read.
Mack and Davey have been together almost 20 years, maybe a few years less. For the last 6 years, Davey has had a high powered, high paying job that provides for their family financially, but causes a lack in basically every other area in their family and marriage.
The thing is, Mack and Davey are wildly in love with each other. And the breaking of their marriage doesn't change that.
But a lack of communication, misunderstandings from that miscommunication, and neither quite having their priorities right, causing them to hit a rough patch that perhaps goes too far.
Mack asks for a divorce, thinking that Davey will say no to it, quit his job, and choose Mack and their two children - without telling Davey any of this desire and just expecting him to know and do it - but instead he agrees, thinking that is what Mack wants (seeing as how that is exactly what Mack says).
Two years go by, and both are miserable, but they also kind of are in a stasis, because Davey still has his work schedule of 2 weeks at work, and 2 weeks at home (and working from home at that), and because they have two young children of 5 and 3, they don't want to disrupt their lives too much (divorce is, after all, very hard on children), and Davey still lives at their home, just in a guest room now.
They've kinda, barely dated other people, but nothing serious. Neither has even kissed anyone else. So it's like they're not together but still together at the same time. They still think about each other as husbands, not ex-husbands, and refer to each other as "my husband" more often than not. It's a struggle for them to remember the "ex" part.
The thing is, they got together pretty young, and never learned to communicate properly, in a mature way. Just because they were in a rough place in their relationship, didn't mean they had to resort to divorce. Neither really want it, they just thought the other did.
I understood both of them and where they were coming from. Mack had to be home with the children 24/7, and Davey was only there 2 weeks a month (so gone for half a year, basically, for 6 years, just spread out) and even when he was there, working from home, client calls and such would cut into his time with the family. So I understand after years of that, Mack's frustration.
But also from Davey's side, he was making serious money for their family, which meant paying their mortgage off (of their really nice house), adding to their savings, paying for good health insurance, and starting college funds for their two children. Since their divorce, Mack has worked at the town's library part time, but that obviously doesn't bring in much money. Even with their divorce, Davey is the financial provider of their family. Without his income, they'd have a hard time financially very quickly.
And also, Davey has always liked travel, and always liked having something to do, and he's very good at his PR job, one of the best, and he genuinely loves it. He also didn't go entirely absent on the family. He tried the best he could be to be present with their family, especially when he was home, and he was basically running himself ragged trying to have it all.
Mack was perhaps a bit shortsighted in only seeing how it affected him, and thinking it was very simple for Davey to just give up his job like *that*, no biggie, no second thoughts - that they'd be fine without the good income as well - and it shouldn't have to be a choice that Davey has to make between his job and his family.
But also, at the end of the day...your family *should* be the most important thing to you, if you choose to have a family. You can't start a family and then be so absent from their lives. So I get Mack in that respect. And Davey definitely became a workaholic over the years too. Like truly, in the beginning I was a little suspect of if Davey truly loved Mack and the kids more than his job, as he was so determined to keep it and loved it a lot, so much so that he was willing to go through with a divorce.
But also...Mack did push him away because of it, didn't even want to hear about Davey's work and Davey at the same time didn't feel like he could talk about it with Mack...and in a marriage, ideally you shouldn't feel like you have to hide a part of yourself away from your partner to make them happy.
So all that to say...both were very flawed in the breaking of their marriage, in what led up to it, but after some time, and when Davey is able to come home after a promotion for 12 straight weeks - more time consecutively he's been home than in 8 years - these two are able to painstakingly work through their problems, mature and grow, and come up with a solution that worked for everyone and got them the HEA they so deserved.
Both of them realized where they went wrong, and eventually communicated wholly with each other, and explained their side of things, and then communicated how to make their marriage work for the both of them. They also kind of, in a way, got to know each other again in a romantic sense, going on a date here or there, showing up for each other in a way they hadn't in years, doing sweet and adorable romantic gestures, and finding the love and passion again as well.
It wasn't so much the sex, but the connection. And boy was their connection great. The chemistry was just on point, and I adored it. Their sex scenes were so well done, I was so impressed. This author can be quite so-so on her sex scenes a lot of the time, so not feeling that "meh" feeling was a welcome change.
Mack and Davey both just needed to get their heads out of their asses, and fight for their relationship once and for all. And both were so determined to do that, it was beautiful to see.
I also love how they came up with a solution that didn't rely on either one giving up their jobs completely or losing a part of themselves to make the other happy.
What happens with Davey's job perhaps isn't realistic...like I know a company may love an employee, but to go to such lengths to keep them? Lol I doubt it. Buttt it made the perfect bow to these two and their HEA, so I'm not mad about it.
Just...this was so good, I loved it so much. What a perfect send off to this series, truly. Mack was always kind of in the background of the books, sad because of his divorce and unable to move on, and here we see why, and we see him get back what he had lost with Davey.
I hope this author writes another book like this, because if she wrote her stories like this all the time, I'd be giving her books 5 stars all over the place.
So I HIGHLY recommend this, you don't want to miss out, especially if you've been following these divorced men finding love again (and sometimes love again with the same person 😉) and want to see how it ends.
I can't wait to read what's next with this lovely author! 🥰
poor Mack is delulu, but thank you ms James for making it finally become truelulu🙌🏻💕
Very sweet, very engaging; loved the longing the pining, their first time back together was emotional and sexy🔥🔥🔥 I’m sad that it’s over because the DMC guys are crazy, fun and hella supportive, friendship goals; I can’t do that lol I’m the one who says ‘well, I’m out and will be waiting when it turns to hell arms wide open’. Art is my favorite side character and deserves to be worshipped like he wants😂 and I’m looking forward to the audiobook because NJR’s narration is damn fine!
I just have a little problem with this. first of all, I honestly pity the ones who are like Mack, who I dislike and there’s a lot of them in the world, AND THEIR PROBLEM IS THEY’RE PURE HEARTED! if we didn’t have Davey’s point of view, then it’s about a guy who’s been divorced for two years, his ex is casually dating, his ex also travels a lot and when he’s in town then he’s living with them! and this pathetic guy with no personal life can’t move on and is waiting for a miracle to get him back and basically smothers his opinions about the smallest things and agrees with the ex just to make him love him again. good thing the ex isn’t abusive, because those people really frustrate me, they won’t accept help!!! second of all, they’ve been together for twenty years and he DOESN’T KNOW WHAT THE FORK THEY HAVE IN COMMON!!!!!??? you’re killing me bro!!!
Tired of being alone and resenting his husband, Mack asks for a divorce thinking it will make Davey choose his family over work.
Two years post divorce he is still hopelessly in love with Davey, and with Davey home for the next several weeks, Mack plans on doing everything he can to show him they can be happy no matter what.
Honestly Forgotten Romance was a bittersweet read for me. I’m so sad that one of my favorite series has come to an end, but I loved Mack and Davey’s story so much and thought it was the perfect series ender.
As much as Mack and Davey didn’t want to split up, they needed to. Their divorce put everything into perspective, and both of their characters made changes that made their reunion so much sweeter.
I was an avid hater of this book in the beginning, which is why it took me almost an entire month to get through it.
It took me a very long time to warm up to the story. Mack asking for a divorce only to try to force Davey into quitting his job, and Davey agreeing just to call his bluff left a bad taste in my mouth that didn’t go away for awhile. And then both of them secretly wanting to get back together the entire time? Absolutely wild to me anyone would go through lawyers and legal fees and all that trouble with the goal of getting back together anyway.
The whole Luke situation was also unnecessary to me. Again, Mack makes it really hard for me to like him. Davey I actually did start to tolerate and I enjoyed the compromise he came to with work. I think if he had either stayed with his position or given up the job completely, I would’ve rated much lower. He made sacrifices for his family without giving up his dreams altogether. Would’ve been better if he’d done that pre-divorce but I digress.
The book focuses a lot more on them fixing their relationship than spice, but I did enjoy what we got. I more-so actually liked the cute moments with the whole family, like the camping trip and the scavenger hunt.
The proposal scene kinda sealed the deal and made this an almost okay book in my eyes. No, I still really don’t like Mack that much. But I’m glad Davey and the kids are getting a happy ending.
This is one for the second chance babes who love longing and domestic scenes.
THE PREMISE: Davey and Mack are divorced … and completely in love with each other.
TROPES & VIBES: - Second chance / marriage in crisis - Big domestic, real-life problems and reconciliation energy - I live for an Art mention. He’s my ride or die - Saxon is the master of writing kids. That’s just facts
When I saw the synopsis of this book, I NEEDED to read it. I debated reading this series for a while but went against all my usual rules and compulsions and jumped right to this one. Divorced husbands still madly in love and plotting to get back together? Yes, please!
Mack and Davey have been together for 20 years, recently adopted two kids and everything should have been perfect. They love each other madly, but when Davey's job makes him more and more absent, Mack can't take the doubts and the weight of being mostly a single dad. Davey spends 2 weeks in NYC and 2 weeks at home with his family, he's been missing his planes home and has been growingly physically and emotionally unavailable. Mack didn't mean to get divorced, he just wanted his husband to choose his family over his job. Two years and a divorce later, things have... barely changed. Davey still comes home two weeks a month to the family home despite being separated from Mack, and they've never moved on from each other. But with his new promotion, Davey gets to stay home for 3 months, and Mack jumps on the occasion to seduce his ex-husband and make him fall in love with him again.
At first, I was strongly on Team Mack: Davey's work schedule seemed impossible and his absence definitely was a sign that something was wrong at home. I did not understand what made him choose his work over his family. Then, the story continued, and Mack became the most unlikeable character ever. I didn't read the previous books, so I don't know how he is "usually" but here he just felt ridiculous. What do you MEAN this man never thought ONCE about the financial side of things, and that the reason why Davey works his NYC job is to pay for their expensive house and their kids' college funds? They didn't seem to have anything in common, and while I did like the arc of him needing to find himself again outside of his relationship to his family, not being able to cite one thing he has in common with his partner of 20 YEARS was insane. Their arguments, repeated throughout the entire book made me wonder why they were in love. I wanted to like them together, the premise had me HOOKED but their communication was terrible (they acknowledge it), and they couldn't have the most simple basic conversations about their relationship. It was maddening.
And the solution felt so obvious to me, I don't know, if you want the money and the family why don't they all move closer to NYC??? This was NEVER on the table even once, Mack wanted to TRAVEL with Davey and keep their 2-week NYC - 2 weeks home thing and that was insane. WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST MOVE OUT????? "UPROOTING THE KIDS" they're 3 and 7 years old, and they will survive and make new friends very fast, idk that felt like such a big overly dramatic conflict that amounted to nothing. Mack annoyed me, Davey annoyed me, their friends annoyed me. Everyone was behaving like teenagers and that pissed me off.
I wanted to like this, and I liked some parts of this. I liked the fact that they were so in love with each other, even if most of the time I couldn't see the chemistry, I liked the way Mack had some real growing up to do, realising he is a big part of the problem and finding himself again. But for most of the book I was just annoyed at their handling of the conflict. Literally so mad. I don't think I'll read this series, even though I do love the divorced / second chance tropes.
There is something about a second chance romance that turns me into mush every time & these two really fucked me up. They loved each other so damn much and it had my heart pitter pattering everytime they were together. They had a well fought HEA and I loved every single second of it.
This can’t be the end. Brb gonna weep for 30 days and 30 nights.
Tropes: second chance, forced proximity, marriage reconciliation
Second chance romances are among my most favourite things to read - especially when they're like this one where there was no single element of blame for why they split in the first place.
Somehow Saxon manages to make this a relatively low angst tale, even with the obvious hurt that both Mack and Davey felt when they ended up with a divorce following what was essentially a call my bluff impulse decision gone wrong.
Neither of them were at fault either - or rather, both of them contributed directly to the causes for them reaching breaking point and it's beautiful to see how they each come to this realisation separately and work towards finding things they can change.
The love between them is blinding, there's none of the frenemies or even enemies vibes that can often accompany this story trope. Instead you can see from the start that it's killing both of them to be exes, especially when they have their two kids to focus on and try to keep life normal for.
I love the swoony way Saxon writes romances, the level of swoon is always perfectly directed to the type of characters her men are and here is no exception.
There's one truly wonderful scene where Mack and Davey just get a chance to reconnect and to actually have a brutally honest conversation about what led to their divorce and it's so realistic that you feel the emotions hurtling off the page.
Their kids are an absolute delight, both three-year-old Van and his sister Kiera, who's five, speak and act completely age appropriate and they provide a perfect catalyst for each man to re-examine the events which led to the split.
I won't spoiler anything specific to the plot but I will just say that this whole narrative is so genuinely driven by these two men's deep knowledge that the other is the only man for them that you're cheering them along just as fiercely as they're fighting to fix things.
Everything about this story worked for me, I couldn't put it down and it was an incredibly cathartic read, packed with all the feels I'd expect from this author. It's also seriously steamy as they begin to reconnect in all the physical ways.
And, with the rest of the DMC on hand to throw in their helpful advice, Saxon draws to a close a truly fabulous series that I have loved from start to finish.
I shall miss this group of men and I hope she occasionally comes back to them now and then with little snippets of how their lives are going!
#ARC kindly received from the author via Foreword PR, I am voluntarily leaving a review
4.5⭐️ I’m not normally a second chance girlie but this was so good after five books of buildup I stayed up until 3am without even realizing 😩🥹😍
Okay so after nearly 5 books of lead up we finally got Mack & Davey's story and it was a higher level of angst than the typical Saxon James book, but still pretty low which is good because these men were a MESS in the previous books, so their road ahead going into this book was looking rough.
The story opens with a flashback to Mack giving Davey an ultimatum making him choose between his job or his marriage. Unfortunately, Davey chooses his work (thinking that that was what Mack wanted all along because they are terrible at communication).
We then jump to 2-year post-divorce, the two of them are still completely in love with each other and haven't moved on whatsoever, and Davey has the next 12 weeks off from work and will be living with Mack and their two children during that time. Cut to Mack (and a bit later on Davey) deciding that they will do anything to get the other one back.
Something I love about this series is that the characters are so well-rounded and realistic. The majority of them are over 40 and act like it. They are mature characters with realistically difficult problems. In this book, the breakdown of Mack & Davey's marriage wasn't caused by any one thing, and they spend a lot of time realizing how they each dropped the ball & determining ways to move forward with changes implemented.
Anyways, I'm so sad that the DMC universe is over...but I really hope Luke gets a book at some point in the future!
*I received an advanced copy of this book, all opinions are my own*
Audio: 5 stars, always a pleasure listening to Nick J Russo. This audio can be found on Everand.
Book: DNF@ chapter 10 (pg 89)
I knew going in that I either might love or hate this. And mainly because I really didn’t like Mack, I couldn’t continue.
He didn’t listen to his friends saying do you think it’s a good idea to get Davey back, knowing that Davey might not want to change and quit his job? Mack was definitely delulu.
Mack needed to make sure that Davey and him could work knowing that Davey might not want to quit his job. While yes, Davey could have had better work-life balance, Mack needed to see that all Davey wanted was to make sure their family has a stable life.
I would have liked to know what Davey’s job is… I think they both needed to make compromises, and not make the main issue to force Davey to quit his job…
They really needed to go back to the beginning and figure out what made them work initially rather than force them to change who they are now.
I am bummed that this didn’t work for me, but I know it worked for a lot of people.
If you think you've met delusional, but you haven't read this book, then you've not met delusional. But also, is it delusion if it works?
And I specifically mean Mack. This man is that friend that would change their entire personality, do ANYTHING for their man. And I don't mean that with any positive connotations whatsoever.
That said.
I've never read a book where I genuinely love them equally until this. And I went in thinking I'd hate Davey. They're both at fault. And paradoxically, neither has done anything wrong.
But also, they're both stupid. Their issue isn't stupid. But their approach to it definitely is.
So we have Mack, who issues an ultimatum to his workaholic husband of more than two decades(except he's bluffing). Gag is, this man loves Davey more than life itself.
And then we have Davey. Frustrated by his work that has him away from home more than half the time so he misses his husband and their two little kids all the time, but it's a really good job, and it pays the bills that enable Mack and the kids to lead the life he wants to give them. Gag is, he'd give Mack anything he asks for(except leave his job). And that includes a divorce.
Cue a series of unfortunate events where two people that are still insanely in love with each other have now been divorced for two years, but unable to move on, and unable to reconcile.
These two are like parallel lines. Their reasons are both valid, and I can see both sides, but it just adds to the delicious frustration of how will they fix this?
For Mack, all he sees is that his husband is never around, he has to raise the kids alone, and even when he's home, he says he's too tired to have sex. Naturally he assumes the worst. And it doesn't help when he tries to shock him into a mindset shift by asking for a divorce and instead, he gets immediate acceptance.
Bit of side eye to Davey on that one. Doesn't even ask why. Doesn't suggest an alternative. Just immediate agreement. Had to hurt like a son of a bitch.
Buuuuuuuut,
For Davey, what he sees is that he works himself ragged to provide the best life for the man he loves and their kids, a big house in the suburbs, insurance, medical coverage, college fund and discretionary income. It frees Mack up to be hands on with the kids as they can afford for him to work a part time job. And he tries to spend all his time with the kids when he's around. And he'd give Mack anything, ANYTHING he asks for (minus that one thing 💀), because if he gave him that, he truly believes they'd sink into debt.
Anyway. Davey gets extended leave - 12 weeks and goes home. As usual, they see things in a different light.
Mack sees this as a last chance to show his ex-husband how good they were and make him fall in love with him all over again.
His heart is in the right place. But his actions.......as always are very misguided.
Meanwhile Davey thinks this is his chance to let Mack go once and for all, and free him to start dating if that's what he really wants.
Which he SAYS to Mack. And then proceeds to act like a woman scorned when Mack so much as talks to an available man.
So.....a comedy of errors.
Paradoxically, their main issue seems to be that they loved each other so much that they kept putting the other's needs and wants above their own. Until this naturally devolved into resentment. And this only got fixed when they got so mad at each other that they started honestly shouting at each other.
My favorite scene in the whole book.
"Tell me you didn't suggest getting a divorce on a whim."
Oh, he did.
Davey was so ANGRY😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂And honestly, I got it.
"I didn't expect you not to choose us!
" I thought it's what you wanted! "
" I've been miserable every single day since."
Once they stopped the selflessness bullshit and embraced selfishness, they realized it was them vs the issue and started working together on fixing it.
Hah! No.
They totally immediately reverted to their selfless bullshit and each tried to out-martyr the other 💀
But eventually. They get there.
They're frustrating but in a good way. I really, really loved this one.
Besides being to damn long for how little did the story tell it was also freaking annoying and frustrating. Mack is definitely one of the worst MC’s I’ve ever read, like for real he just sucks. For starters he brings and ask for a divorce on a whimp, manipulated his ex husband, create this whole messy plan to seduce said husband (cause he didn’t thought he would accept the divorce he asked for ?). He isn’t even a great dad cause wdym Davey was amble to control those good damn kids better if he is “absent” parent. Also the more his friends tried to make him see how important was to not force Davey into quitting his job and how important said job was for the financial security of their family yet he didn’t gave a shit and only focused on his needs. Anyways he may not be THE worst character ever written but I find him annoying and at the end he didn’t got any character development. I liked Davey as a character and I truly think he was so thoughtful with the future he wanted for his kids and didn’t deserve to be blamed on the end of his marriage and to be pointed as the bad guy just cause he didn’t want to throw his career away. Hated that the only reason he kept his job was for the writing convenient powers.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Omg these two were giving me all the feels! I teared up within the first few chapters and severely never stopped! You could tell from each chapter how much Mack and Davey truly loved each other. I love a mutual pining situation and these two were masters at the craft….like literally they could fill a forest with all the pining.
I’m usually not a huge fan of second chance romances because of how much one party is blamed more than the other but this story didn’t have that problem. Both Davey and Mack take responsibility for the part that they played in the end of their marriage and what they can do to reconcile without giving up who they are and what they want. They were so sweet and in love and a perfect end to a series I love ❤️
Also btw Art still remains the best character in this entire series 🫶🏾
I enjoyed this series a lot, but this last one somehow didn't gel with me totally.
The writing is generally great, and I liked the scenario: two guys who lost the romance and passion between them over the years are finding a way to be with each other again. Because the love is still there. (and yes, I'll come to that...)
Both need to grow as people (and they do!), realise that their truth is not the only one, and mostly, both need to learn to compromise in a way it's beneficial for each man. So far, so good.
We get their two very different view points at the beginning and, tbh, I have no idea why these guys never thought of sitting down and TALK before they rush into an ill-conceived divorce. I mean they have been together for ... twenty years??? Have they never talked before? And after all that time, Mack doesn't know what they have in common? What?
I get that, in the course of time, you can lose your ways a bit and take a person for granted, but to divorce and then still continue to live together, is downright madness.
Still, I can take this and get on with it, but what really got to me here is that we constantly, like every third page or so, are told how much they love each other. 'I love him so much' is the most over-used phrase in this book. As are the words 'perfect' and 'amazing'. (For me) it's totally over the top.
Nothing against re-discovering your partner (I'm all for that!) but I had a hard time fighting the saccharine. If they're that sweet on each other, they should have blooming talked and not divorced. And yes, I know that's simplistic, and there is a lot more to their story, but somehow it seemed the bottom line. Rant over.
Saying that, I enjoyed the series as a whole, and all the cameos of the other guys we've come across is lovely here. (and you just have to love Art!)
divorced men with children rekindle their love durnig their holiday? yes. and their friends (divorced men club) help them ? duh!
what i loved most is that they didn't divorce because of a big issue like cheating or lying, but simply because of work. they are still so in love but the fact that they couldn't have family time or romantic moments. the anonymous notes were everything. the way they both are so clearly in love with each other and want to win the other back was so adorable.
the epilogue got me. i got a tiny little tear threatening to roll down my cheek
This second chance romance is very cute & low angst. I found it frustrating at times when they just were cryptic with their words and refused to just come out and say what was going on but overall i had a good time with this couple
It’s unfortunately very realistic for marriages for fail when one person puts their job before their family. I do wonder if Luke will get a spinoff love story he seemed sweet
Absolute favorite in the series! I love second chance romances, especially when the couple is divorced. It’s clear from the past books and this one that Mack and Davey never stopped loving each other. I loved watching them relearn each other, and how to speak up for themselves as they navigated rekindling the romance that never died. And the pacing in this one was just right!
I’ll be honest I was expecting this book, but it did not deliver for me :( I enjoyed it but it’s def not my fav of the serie.
I’m so happy for both Davey and Mack, I’ve been following them through the serie and really wanted them back together. However I found that the book circled around the same thing for most of the book. I’m not a huge fan of miscommunication and this book is full of it. That is definitely a me problem, not the book.
I’m sad it’s the last book of the serie because I love this DMC so much haha. Art will conquer the world anyway 🤷🏻♀️😂.
It's been a minute since I wrote a review but this book had me sooooo damn frustrated I needed to vent. I combed through some reviews to see if anyone else felt the same way I did, and it seems that you either love every facet of this book... or you hated almost every part of it and unfortunately I fell into the latter category.
I knew going into this that I probably wouldn't be obsessed with it because I don't typically like second chance romances, but I love Saxon James and I've read every other book in this series so figured I'd give it a go.
End result? Team Davey all the way. I haven't disliked a character as much as I disliked Mack in a loooong time.
Let's break this down.
We know that Davey is a realist and Mack is an idealist and eternal optimist - which is something Davey loves about him, but does it really excuse how short-sighted he is? He wants Davey to quit his job (which pays enough it allows Mack to be at home with the kids) and still thinks that nothing will change?? You're telling me he's never once considered the financial side of things; that Davey quitting his job means they'll have to pick up more hours, potentially move out of their big house, not have as much money to put towards their kids' college funds? Or that he never clued in that if Davey is so passionate about his work, forcing him to quit won't end in Davey resenting him? Or how about that he never - until two years after they were divorced - realised that Davey was devastated he couldn't be there for Van's first steps, but he kept working his job so that Mack could be there for it all. It blew my mind that for a guy who was so in love with Davey, he never actually took responsibility for his part in the downfall of their marriage until TWO YEARS AFTER THEY DIVORCED! And no one else in the town seemed to realise this either. Even Davey's own parents didn't see that there was more at play than Davey simply not quitting his job.
Exhibit A: 'I've always held a slight chip of irritation that [Davey] wasn't there [for Van's first steps]. How would I have felt if I wasn't? Devastated. That's how. Fuck, is that how Davey feels about missing it?'
My comment on that quote: "Are you fkin daft??" How did he think Davey would feel? Relieved?
My saving grace in this book was Davey being a realist and trying to plan a logical way out of this hole they're in - did it take him way too long to come to this conclusion? Yeah, it did. But he was stuck and couldn't see a way out, unlike Mack whose plan to get Davey to stay was so fkin dumb but we'll get to that in a minute.
And Orson? My man. When Mack is like 'omg I don't know how to make this work' Orson just says 'why don't you just go with him?' and Mack acts like an alien spaceship just landed in the middle of his house.
Exhibit B: Mack: "Stop making this sound easy." Orson: "I'm not. Look, I get it's a hard choice. I'm only pointing out that if being together is the most important thing to you, you can make it work."
THANK YOU ORSON for being the voice of reason. This whole book, Mack put the entire blame of their marriage on Davey and expected Davey to be the one to fix everything. While Davey was working his ass off and struggling to find a way to stay home more to be with Mack and their kids, Mack's over here ready to go on a date with another guy so that he has a back-up plan just in case Davey decides he doesn't want to be together anymore. I'm sorry, if you're as in love with Davey as you say you are, you'd be trying harder to find a solution to what's keeping you apart, not going on a date with another guy to see if you're ready to get over your ex-husband. IMO, you don't need to kiss another dude at the end of a date - ESPECIALLY after you decided there's nothing romantic there - just to see if you could move on with another man.
And why did none of their friends pull Mack up on this? Their whole shtick with Project Get-Davey-Back was this -
Exhibit C: Keller: "I only have one thing I want to negotiate on Davey's behalf." Mack: "What is it?" Keller: "Nothing shady. We're here to help you reconnect with him to a point where you feel comfortable bringing up your relationship again. There's no tricks. No manipulation. Just you reminding him that you love him by putting in effort, and then you need to promise to talk to the man." Mack: "I promise."
Um. Where did the 'no manipulation' part of that go? Because Mack's whole plan with this date was to make Davey so jealous he'd quit his job and stay with them for good. Why did no one have anything to say about this?
I think I need to stop ranting now.
I'm rating this book three stars because I love Saxon James and, ultimately, the book was written well. But I hated so many decisions that our characters made and, while I'm happy there was a HEA, I don't think I'll ever reread this book because I just can't stand how everyone was shitting on Davey for his decisions, but never questioning Mack for his. Toodles, peeps. #TeamDavey4EVa
Can't believe we are on book 6 of the Divorced Men's Club and this ends the series with a heavy heart where all is settled and love is brimming. This story was never about falling out of love, these two had so much love for one another it kept the heart beating all the way through. It's hard to believe their marriage didn't make it, but communication had let them down. There is a blame game of who was at fault that their relationship broke down. It's clear both acted out of love but what that looked like to both of them varied differently. This story is about both men finding their way back together again. Being able to unite their love for one another. I think the love is the adhesion that keeps this story going, always a sucker for a love story and happy ending, you are rooting for them to make good decisions. The group chats keeps up the humour, but we also see how special each of the friends are. Hopefully, we hear from Luke again, he was a sweet character. I will miss all of these guys, they have been fantastic. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
you’ll never make me feel bad for someone who chooses their job over their family. i’ll understand why the work hard to provide but it’ll always be more important to be present, so i’m
anyway, to not go into a deep conversation, they are definitely a cute couple. loved the kids!
Second chance romances are usually not my favourite but this one I was super hyped for! The way Mack and Davey still love each other so much and couldn’t even begin to get over each other was so compelling.
But honestly when I read it I only shipped them because they genially were so in love, not because I thought they were perfect for each other?! They seem to have nothing in common and Daveys workaholic syndrome was kinda weird considering he has loving parents and they both are able to work. I didn’t even get why they got kids in the first place, when Davey was barely home. I’m kinda glad he realised his job wasn’t that important after all, even though it took him way way too long (two years!!!). They should have talked it out a long time ago instead of acting like teenagers and being passive aggressive, only assuming things.
All in all this was an okay book, but not my favourite in the series.
Also WYM he came ON the hall wall and then simply went to BED?! Brother eww.
