About the author

Jo Nesbø is a bestselling Norwegian author and musician. He was born in Oslo and grew up in Molde. Nesbø graduated from the Norwegian School of Economics with a degree in economics. Nesbø is primarily famous for his crime novels about Detective Harry Hole, but he is also the main vocals and songwriter for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre. In 2007 Nesbø also released his first children's book, Doktor Proktors Prompepulver.

This collection of short stories by the talented Jo Nesbø is divided into two themes. The first centres on jealousy and part two around power. I enjoy the first group much better than the second as there’s a really good mix of stories and the theme is evident throughout. The first entitled London is outstanding and my favourite story as I love the clever twist at the end which makes me smile, albeit wryly. The second The Jealousy Man which gives the collection it’s title, has a great premise of sibling rivalry and how that manifests itself into jealousy. It is a bit on the long side with some digressions but it is a clever story of parallel lines. I also like The Line which is short and sharp with the perfect revenge for a line jumper. In Trash we have an angry and jealous refuse disposal officer who really cleans up after himself and The Confession has a particularly yummy Twist! The latter really appeals to my rather dark sense of humour!!

The collection with power as it’s linking theme doesn’t grab me in quite the same way. Rat Island is a harsh and rather dismal story which I find is hard to get into but on the other hand The Cicadas although it is a convoluted tale, the concept is very creative and keeps the attention which you sure need! The Antidote is the story of a powerful father and son but the father is one jump ahead of the son in a clever though dark conclusion. The Black Knight is a bleak story which I don’t especially care for but I do like the way it concludes.

Jo Nesbø is one of my favourite authors and the quality of his writing is apparent in many of these but not all in my opinion. I definitely prefer his full length novels all of which I highly rate. However, this is very different collection with some unusual plots and so if you enjoy short stories then you may like this.

The Jealousy Man was part of the anthology The Jealousy Man and Other Stories and is now published separately as part of the 2024 Quick Reads program. This is my first Jo Nesbo story and it’s a solid little introduction to his writing. He makes very good use of the setting, making it come to life to elevate the murder mystery plot. Unfortunately, I didn’t care about any of the characters. The mystery is pretty solid though there’s more focus on the drama rather than the mystery and the big twist is quite predictable. The story also never managed to grab me to be honest. Though this might just be personal taste, so don’t let it stop you from picking this one up should you be interested.

‘It’s quite possible to like both Zeppelin and Sheeran.’ Well I have to say I disagree with that quote.

I am reading this book in the local library while my wife has our youngest grandson (almost 2) on her lap playing to nursery rhymes.

I noticed a section devoted to Quick Reads. Short stories from popular authors. Loving a Nesbo I grabbed it.

Great short story of a policeman on a Greek Island investigating the disappearance of an identical twin. Clever plot intertwining the detectives earlier time at Oxford University and his rock climbing days.

Never read a poor Nesbo this was great👍

ABANDONADO.

Me quedaban tres relatos para terminar el libro pero no estaba conectando con ninguno de estos, es más sentía que me iba a dar un bloqueo lector, así que antes de que me diese he preferido abandonarlo. Además no tenía ninguna motivación para seguir leyendo.

De los nueve relatos que había conseguido leer solo me habían gustado dos por lo que no puedo hacer una valoración buena de este libro…

La mayoría de los relatos se me han hecho largos y tediosos. No le encontraba el sentido muchas veces a lo que nos estaba contando el autor y muchos me parecían más ciencia ficción que thriller.

The second "The Jealousy Man" which gives the collection it’s title, has a great premise of sibling rivalry and how that manifests itself into jealousy. I didn't much care for "The Line" which is short and sharp which focuses on the nasty revenge for a someone who jumps the queue in a shop. In "Trash" we have an angry and jealous bin lorry driver who really cleans up after himself and "The Confession" has a particularly delicious Twist! The Confession really appeals to my rather dark sense of humour!! "Odd" was about a writer who is fed up with fame or is he? "The Earring" was really fun with a dark twist to it too...That reminds me, I better get my car serviced soon 🤔

The collection with POWER as it’s theme doesn't grab me in quite the same way. "Rat Island" is a harsh and rather dismal story which I find is hard to get into. "The Shredder" imagines a world decimated by a deadly sexual disease and a scientist searching for the secret of immortality to save his dying wife. My favourite, "The Cicadas" is a strange Science fiction/Murder tale, the concept is very creative and keeps the attention throughout the story. Brilliant!! "The Antidote" is the story of a powerful father and his troubled son with his own addiction problems, however the father is one jump ahead of the son in a clever though dark conclusion. "The Black Knight" is a bleak story which I don’t especially care for but I do like the way it concludes.

This was my first Jo Nesbø book and I enjoyed most of his stories and his dark humour and plot twists. His Harry Hole novel's are meant to be excellent so I look forward to diving into them one day.

Una vez más voy a diferir de las corriente generalizada de opiniones sobre este libro: a mi me ha parecido una puñetera maravilla.

Nesbo nos trae varios cuentos, unos cortos y otros no tanto, que tienen como eje central los celos y el poder, sobre todo los celos masculinos. Y lo hace con la puesta en escena y los elementos de la novela negra, de la que sin duda es gran maestro. Historias para disfrutar y para reflexionar, incluso a veces verse reflejado en los sentimientos de los personajes y acabar preguntándote si, por miserable que sea lo que sucede, tu no hubieras hecho lo mismo....

Abstenerse lectores de historias fáciles, los relatos no lo son, el autor parte, en cada relato, de un total caos literario en el que poco o nada tiene sentido para el lector, para después, brillantemente ir poniendo luz en cada historia. Si quieres enterarte desde el principio de lo que está pasando, si no quieres o no tienes tiempo para prestar mucha atención, no es tu libro.

Totalmente recomendable, fascinado con el autor.

De lo que he leído de Nesbo hasta ahora, que ha sido casi todo lo que ha escrito, es lo que menos me ha gustado.
No me gustan mucho los relatos, y algunos de este libro no me han parecido ni pasables. El de los Sanfermines es bastante infumable.
Pues eso, decepcionado.
Que vuelva Harry Hole cuanto antes, se le echa de menos. O al menos yo

Me gusta la serie de Harry Hole, pero admito que no le tenía mucha fe a estos relatos por algún motivo. Sin embargo, la verdad es que me han sorprendido, los disfruté mucho y varios me parecieron excelentes. La temática de los primeros siete es sobre los celos y lo lejos que estos pueden llevarnos, el cómo nos convertimos en otras personas al sentirlos y el daño que pueden llegar a causar. La segunda mitad va sobre el poder, sobre cómo corrompe y los que lo tienen lo usan a su favor de forma egoísta sin pensar en los demás.

Los primeros relatos (Londres, El hombre celoso y La cola) se sintieron como algo conocido, tenían un giro predecible que no les quitó que fueran entretenidos. Toda la construcción de El hombre celoso estuvo bien hecha, pero como dije, era predecible y eso le quitaba un poco de potencia al final. Basura resultó interesante, aunque principalmente por el tono y la voz narrativa, la forma en que el mismo protagonista no sabía bien lo que sucedió y el cómo todo se fue develando, admito que esperé un poco más del final, pero estuvo bien.

"Porque he estado allí. Porque nuestros celos eliminan las diferencias entre tú y yo, los celos logran que nuestros comportamientos empiecen a parecerse más allá de las clases sociales, del género, la religión, la formación y el coeficiente intelectual, la cultura o la educación. Del mismo modo que los drogadictos más enganchados, todos somos muertos vivientes dando tumbos por las calles impulsados por un solo afán: llenar ese gran agujero negro que tenemos en nuestro interior"

Confesión y Odd fueron mis favoritos de la primera parte. Confesión es interesante en su construcción, la voz narrativa del protagonista el cómo va hilando sus pensamientos y el cómo se ve arrastrado en confesar lo que hizo. Es predecible, sí, pero el cómo estuvo contado fue lo mejor. Por otro lado, con Odd no me vi venir el final, creo que es el que tenía menos marcado la temática de los celos de este grupo, era más sobre la vida del autor, el costo de este "genio creativo" y el precio por ser capaz de escribir lo que se quiere escribir. Por último, El pendiente, no me resultó tan predecible como los otros, similar a los relatos mencionados lo más interesante tenía que ver con la narración del protagonista y el cómo hiló sus pensamientos para llegar a un desenlace que no se veía venir tan claro.

La isla de las ratas es el primero de la parte sobre el poder, un relato más largo tipo apocalíptico, un poco Mad Max, con una anarquía y grupos de pandillas amenazando por las calles. Me gustó, en especial el final pues dentro de todo el protagonista mantuvo su brújula moral de siempre, pero fue capaz de obtener lo que quería. Es un relato un poco más duro que los otros, más cruel y frustrante. Maculadora estuvo bien, interesante por el tema de la vida eterna y el costo que esta podría tener, volvemos a tener un protagonista con un fuerte código moral que se mantiene firme a sus principios, a pesar de traspasar otros.

"Ejecutarte no sería en ningún caso una venganza suficiente. Porque, sí, quiero que te arrepientas. Quiero que sientas el mismo dolor que yo al perder a uno de tus seres más queridos. Y quiero que sientas la misma culpa que yo por no haber protegido lo bastante a tu familia. No soy mejor persona por eso. Pero los seres humanos tenemos la capacidad única de renunciar a aquello que nos proporciona una satisfacción a corto plazo en aras de algo que tiene una finalidad superior"

Cigarras fue mi favorito entre todos, este era más cifi que otra cosa, mezclaba la idea de mundos paralelos, celos y un poder relacionado más a la inteligencia. Me encantó, disfruté mucho el cómo se dio todo y que detesté a un personaje, pero para el final igual tuvo un arco de redención corto pero interesante. Antídoto estuvo bien, predecible y la verdad es que no me llamó mucho la atención, aunque sí me gustó el final. Caballo negro también me gustó mucho, vuelve a una sociedad post apocalíptica con nuevas reglas sociales, pero que se parece a la nuestra. Una historia interesante sobre asesinos con distintos códigos morales y cómo la astucia puede ser superior a la maldad.

Me gustó que dentro de todo dio la sensación que los relatos eran crueles (siempre habían asesinatos de por medio), pero tenían un tono de esperanza y de bondad mezclada con toda la crueldad detrás. Además, a pesar de lo frustrante que podían llegar a ser por ciertas injusticias la mayoría tuvo un final que dejaba una sensación de satisfacción por el desenlace que tomaba la historia.

Disfruté los relatos mucho más de lo que pensé que lo haría, me alivió saber que puedo disfrutar de Jo Nesbø incluso en historias cortas. Sé que la serie Harry Hole no es una obra de arte, pero la verdad es que le tengo cierto cariño, por eso quería leer al autor en otro estilo para ver si seguía disfrutando de su pluma.

El hombre celoso es una antología de doce relatos que se dividen en dos temas cetrales: celos y poder. Así es como nos cuentan historias de asesinatos relacionados con estos temas, el cómo ambos pueden corromper incluso a aquellos que menos lo pensaríamos. Nesbø incluyó bastante temas futuros como post apocalípticos y toques de cifi para crear sus distintos ambientes.

Een Duitse toerist verdwijnt op een klein Grieks eiland. Hij zou de vorige avond ruzie gehad hebben met zijn tweelingbroer. Inspecteur Nikos Balli, de Jaloezieman genoemd, wordt gevraagd om een kijkje te komen nemen, want men vermoedt dat het hier wel eens niet om een ongeluk zou kunnen gaan, maar om moord.
Dit is wel een heel dun boekje; ik had nog niets van Jo Nesbo gelezen, en ik twijfel of dit verhaal representatief is voor zijn oeuvre. Ik vond het wel goed, zeker de plottwist op het eind, maar te kort om je echt in te leven in het verhaal.

Ồ, kể ra Jo Nesbo viết Sci-fi ổn phết, không đùa được đâu. Tập truyện ngắn này được chia làm hai phần. Phần 1 Jealousy bao gồm những truyện ngắn về đề tài tình yêu, cụ thể là ghen tuông. Truyện dài nhất, The Jealousy Man, không quá xuất sắc, nhưng những truyện siêu ngắn (tầm dưới 50 trang) trong phần nay lại khá ấn tượng. Phần 2 Power chủ yếu toàn truyện Sci-fi về đề tài tận thế hay du hành thời gian. Tất cả đều ổn, kết cấu chặt chẽ, mạch lạc, lối kể truyện lôi cuốn. 4,5⭐

"El hombre celoso" es el primer libro de relatos de Jo Nesbo.
Dividido en dos partes, Celos y Poder, consta de 12 cuentos cuyo hilo conductor son los crímenes más diversos que estos sentimientos disparan.
Fiel al estilo que maneja en la novela negra, el autor logra replicar lo mismo en sus ideas para este formato más corto.
Aunque a decir verdad, algunos podrían considerarse nouvelles o novelas cortas, como el relato que da nombre al libro o como "La isla de las ratas". Esta última es sin duda mi historia favorita de toda la colección: un padre que busca venganza en una sociedad donde el estado de derecho ya no existe producto del colapso mundial... después de una pandemia(!!!) Tan actual y factible como escalofriante.
Cualquier fanático de Nesbo no se sentirá desilusionado al leer estas nuevas historias de personajes sufridos y rotos, y esa mezcla de lo negro con toques de humor y sorpresas hasta el final como nos tiene acostumbrados.

Dun boekje, maar toch krijgt Jo Nesbo het voor elkaar om lange uitleggen over klimmen erin te verwerken. Die heb ik maar overgeslagen. Daarnaast heb ik al een aantal boeken van Nesbo gelezen, maar zijn schrijfstijl is niet helemaal mijn ding heb ik gemerkt, het voelt stroef aan waardoor het niet vlot leest. En dit boekje is duidelijk van zijn hand, ook de hoofdpersonage heeft weer een kenmerk die typisch is. Prima boekje voor tussendoor omdat het dun is, maar hoe het precies zat zag ik ook al aankomen dus geen verrassende plotwending.

This is a collection of twelve short stories from the author of the excellent Harry Hole Scandi-crime series. I really enjoyed most of the stories, several of which are set in a dystopian future and are on the theme of either 'Jealousy' or ' Power'. A good read - 8.5/10.

Dit boekje kreeg je in november 2021 bij de boekhandel cadeau bij aankoop van een ander boek. De ik-figuur is een oudere politieman in Athene die naar een klein Grieks eiland vliegt in verband met een vermiste Duitse toerist. Het gaat om een man die samen met zijn broer op vakantie is. Het is een eeneiige tweeling. Ik moest denken aan het advocatenduo Anker en Anker. Als je een van hen ziet, weet je niet wie je voor je hebt, als je ze naast elkaar ziet, zie je toch kleine verschillen. In het boek draait het ook hier om de verwarring en om de vraag of de ene broer zich als de ander kan voordoen, zelfs aan een echtgenote. Voorts speelt bergbeklimmen een sleutelrol in het boek. De ik-figuur heeft hiermee een pijnlijk verleden dat in de ontknoping van het verhaal van vitaal belang is. Die ontknoping speelt zich op een berg op het eiland af. Het is dan vijf jaar na de vermissing. De ik-figuur en een van de broers gaan op het scherpst van de snede bij elkaar te biecht. Het verhaal is spannend geschreven. De toon is ook serieus, het is niet humoristisch. Ik had niet eerder iets van deze auteur gelezen en ik vind het boek als tussendoortje zeker het lezen waard. Ik geef hier niet de hele plot prijs, bij een thriller haal je dan de magie er uit. De plot zie je in ieder geval niet al meteen aankomen, die is echt verrassend.

Finalizada. Edición en audiolibro/digital. Empecé esta novela en formato digital y, viendo que estaba en audiolibro en eBiblio, cambié de formato. Menos mal, si hubiese continuado en digital, no lo termino. Doce relatos sobre los celos masculinos. Tenemos celos entre hermanos, pareja, amigos… No llegó a engancharme ninguno de los relatos, ni los personajes, mi la trama, ni la ambientación, nada de nada. Lo terminé de puro milagro. Esta novela no es para mi. Nota 1/5. FIN.

When an author of Jo Nesbo's caliber publishes his first ever collection of short stories, then the readers ought to brace themselves for a wholly different approach of storytelling by a writer who has linked his name with the notorious Harry Hole saga and plenty of groundbreaking standalones. Of course, the limited length of a short story or a novella doesn't allow Nesbo to fully illustrate his immense skills in intricate plotting or his aptitude in meticulous descriptions, but his genius finds new ways to shine through the use of extensive dialogue parts where the characters ponder on a variety of issues regarding the human condition. The exchanges are witty, full of insights and incisive remarks that constitute the main narrative vehicle through which the stories propel forward.

95 pagina's, dus net mand genoeg om mij erbij te houden met mijn Tik Tok concentratiespanningsboog (fav woord btw). Best leuk verhaal, wel een beetje voorspelbaar. Gelukkig was ik zo verloren in het onthouden van de namen van de personen dat het wat langer spannend bleef. Laatst heb ik iemand ontmoet die een soort fotografisch geheugen heeft, maar dan vooral met namen en routes. Ik kan me niet voorstellen hoe veel chiller mijn leven zou zijn. Hoezo heb ik soms nogsteeds Google Maps nodig in Akkrum??? (dit is echt een mega confessie) Ik heb daar 18 jaar van mijn leven gewoond???? Maar goed, het gaf dit boek dus wel zn charme.

Vond het leuk dat ze gingen klimmen. Ik wil ook naar Griekenland.

Creo que esta recopilación de relatos debería ser "texto obligatorio" en cualquier curso de composición narrativa.
Confieso que ya no soy muy objetiva cuando se trata de este autor, pero cada una de estas historias contiene - además del relato en sí - componentes narrativos dignos de análisis y admiración.
La experiencia de lectura se asemeja a tomar dosis condensadas de su ingenio y talento.
