Rip Tide by Brian Bigelow
Rip Tide has two main protagonists, one an author of horror dealing with his own demons and one the infamous Jack the Ripper.
The jumps in point of view from one to the other at times were a bit confusing for me but not impossible to overcome and a paragraph or such were all I needed to place this correct protagonist in the correct time again.
That is the negative part of the book, here is what I loved. When Jack "escapes" Whitechappel" he moves into a time where woman are no longer the weaker sex. As a matter of fact he soon finds himself in a position where the woman of our day literally kicks his ass. I loved this and I loved his inability to see that times have changed and that he is no longer in Kansas, Dorothy. I think that the ladies active in Whitechappel might have been street smart and ought to have been able to stand their man against the ripper but they never did. The reason behind this is unknown but It only occurred to me while reading this book with today's woman being stalked that we might have interpreted the situation singularly from a male point of view and that might be our problem in identifying Jack The Ripper….interesting.
A 4 * review and a highly recommended read

This was an interesting take on the life of Jack The Ripper, and wow was it a good one. I found being in the mind of a serial killer a little disturbing, but isn't that the way one should feel? Well, all non-serial killers, anyway. The idea behind the time jump was awesomely thought out and original.

The writing was very good. I didn't feel as though the same clichés were repeated over and over. I got a really good description of the surroundings around Jeremy and Phineas, but sometimes the head-hopping between the two had me re-reading the paragraph to get back on track. It wasn't too terribly distracting, but it is something the author could fix with a short sentence here and there.

This book is horror and all that that entails. It's not for the faint of heart, but there are a few chuckle moments that surprised me. They were well placed. I would recommend this book to anyone that reads horror, thriller and suspense.

I'm going to preface this by saying I really did enjoy this book, but I'm going to be little bit more critical than I usually am in my reviews. Firstly the story was a little bit slow, actually it wasn't really that it was slow, it just seemed to take forever to get to where I wanted it to be. Jack the Ripper in modern society, and I'm not a very patient person. But as its only short and a very interesting read it was easy enough to keep going. Secondly, and this point really annoyed me, who gets hold of a grimoire and doesn't even so much as look at it without without a serious reason? Argh, that part frustrated me. As I said though, I still really enjoyed the book, it's an interesting story line and very well written and you really start to feel for Phineas despite it being a short story.A word for the wise though, when you get to the end of the story make sure you read the extras, fascinating stuff. 4stars.

An inspired and clever tale about Jack the Ripper and his connection to a writer a hundred years later. Told in two separate narratives Bigelow manages to keep us guessing how the two plots eventually will come and end together.
The author recreates the horrors of Jack the Ripper and the gothic and scary sides of Victorian London incredibly well and authentic and he also offers an inspired take at the blur between reality and imagination in the mind of many writers.
The book is full of gore and suspense and has a great ending. A terrific piece by a master of horror.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

I do not like to give less than four stars to any book. I prefer not to even write a review if I feel the novel was less than that. However, I feel that Rip Tide has some very redeeming qualities and I would really like to see the author continue to write and to revise this story.

The premise is interesting. I am fascinated with Jack the Ripper. I have always wondered what made him stop. Did he die? Was his need to kill fulfilled? There are so many unanswered questions. Bigelow's answer to these questions was that Jack went forward in time, possessing another's body in order to continue his killing spree.

I absolutely loved the irony of Jack the Ripper being unable to victimize modern-day women. I am not sure that it was intentionally written as humorous, but the image of a "working girl" beating him upside the head with her purse was very funny. I can actually see this happening, as women today are brought up very differently than in the past.

I did, however, have problems with the way the book was written. The lack of transition between characters was very confusing for me. I stopped marking grammatical errors at about 15 percent of the way through the book. Most of this could be easily fixed with a good editor or proofreader, but it detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

I would like to read this again after it has been cleaned up. It could very easily be a four or five star book.

Of course I've heard of Jack the Ripper, but I never realized nothing was none about his fate. Rip Tide provides a creative spin on what might have happened to this infamous villain. Kudos to the author for coming up with this idea!

Before reading the book, I knew that it was written from two character perspectives as another reviewer had commented on this. What I didn't realize was that those two perspectives were also written during different historical times. Therefore, I was a bit confused at the beginning of the book when I read scenes that I thought contradicted each other, but it eventually dawned on me what was going on.

I felt that the book could have benefited from the services of an editor. The lack of comma use was distracting and caused me to reread sentences multiple times to understand what was being said. I also felt that the ending was too abrupt. It was as if the main character thought of a way to resolve the situation but didn't think Jack would fall for it; low and behold Jack falls for it and boom, the story was over. I think the ending could have worked it was further fleshed out and developed.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I appreciated the information that the author included at the end of the book -- historical information on Jack the Ripper that the author discovered in his research. I learned something new about Jack.

I was not disappointed in reading this! First off, I thought Brian wrote more sci*fi fantasy so I wasn't sure I would enjoy it. However, when I got the book I opened it and started reading almost right away in curiosity.I love crime stories, and criminal matters, and horror genres-this spoke to me in that sense. I don't know that I would call it a typical horror story, and it is certainly not one of those horror knock-offs. I can say the book grabbed me into a real fantasy horror topic and then spun with a classical tale of two that mixed emotions, disruptions, and created an amazing read. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, and I certainly will look to read more of Brian's books in the very near future! Great Read, and very quick, it keep my attention and had me wanting to read on.

A Jack the Ripper book, how exciting.
The book wasn't what I expected but loved the idea that the killings at Whitechapel in 1888 stopped because Jack ended up moving forward in time to the modern day.
The jump between one character to the other was confusing but you soon got use to it. The reader is reading through the mind of a serial killer and a an author was disturbing but kept me reading. i think an author is quite talented writing through the eyes of a sidturbed person. Some of the scenes were quite detailed.
I quite enjoyed that Jack did find it hard to find a victim in the modern day and laughed when he got hit by one.
Didn't mind reading this story and was cool that it was a quick read.

I received the book from the author for an honest review.

An interesting twist in the familiar story of Jack the Ripper as we met Phineas Smith. Author of horror, he found himself possessed by the spirit of Jeremy Downes and his struggles to make sense of it all as this spirit tries to take him to the dark alleys of his town. The gruesome acts of Jack the Ripper is relived once again, his persistence to rid the world from his mother and all those that follows in her footsteps.
Well written and fast paced this story kept your attention as you learn more about Phineas and his own struggles, not willing to accept this "demon" within.
The history accurate and well researched to make this entertaining.

Rip Tide

A dark and twisted tale containing Jack the Ripper and a modern day author, Phineas. It’s a quick read that is well written, flows smoothly and will keep you gripped with the suspense of what may happen. I enjoyed how the author managed to include historical facts about Jack the Ripper and loved the reason for why the killings suddenly stopped.

Rip Tide is an enjoyable read but it does take some effort to get into. The book jumps between two first person narrations and it is sometimes hard to understand which you are currently reading. Bigelow has obviously done some extensive research as to the state of London at the time of Jack the Ripper and his writing is enjoyable. I will say that the book needs cleaning up as there are some proofing errors in there but overall it is an enjoyable work.

This is a quick entertaining read about an author taking on Jack the Ripper. Phineas is a modern day author who decides to take a little vacation and go to a museum. Little does he realize Jack has done a spell and is very much still around. I loved the story line and was delighted by this book. You do bounce back and forth between the two main characters for a little bit. Great read! WaAR

Rip Tide is a great read. I love books about Jack the Ripper, and I was not disappointed at all. I loved the twists and turns in this book. It did jump around a bit at the beginning but it was not anything that distracted me from reading it at all. It had me hooked from the first to the very last page.

we all know what Jack the ripper did but this book tells it if Jack would have told you how he did the murders

I loved the way that Brian did the book with the old and the present

There is a twist in the book which is good and I am sure you will all love it as it bring Jack into the present day
