“She glared deep into his azure eyes, bestowing him with a silent promise. He may very well be responsible for her undoing. But she would be his end.”
When Mora met Dother she expected a one-night tryst, but the man she grew to love had a different idea. He intended to keep her at any cost. Even if that meant binding her to a flask and cursing her to grant the wishes of any who held it. Though Dother meant it when he swore Mora would never truly be rid of him, he didn’t anticipate the monster she would become in the name of vengeance.
Revenge was not enough.
Three hundred years later, Mora is eternally cursed, rageful, and haunted by memories of Dother. She makes do by twisting her Keepers’ wishes to have dire, often deadly outcomes until a wish gone awry lands Mora in the hands of a new, terrifying enemy. One who knows all of Dother’s secrets and plans to use them against her.
Trapped alongside Zadriel, a brooding Fae male who despises her and yearns for her in equal measure, Mora must face a past she longs to forget. But something is hidden in the Forbidden Forest. Secrets her Keeper wishes to uncover. Secrets Zadriel would prefer to keep. As Mora is forced to fulfill a wish she knows will end in horror, she unravels the damning truth about Dother’s curse. And Mora isn’t the only one who’s doomed.

Overall Rating: 2.5 out of 5 Spice Rating: 2.5 out of 5
I DNF'd this book at 82%, so let's get into it.
Pros: - The basic premise/plot of this book is a fantastic idea, and unique. - The villains are truly villainous and have you enraged by their actions. - The present tense and past tense POVs was a nice touch in telling Mora's story.
Cons: - The magic system is not explained at all. Magic occurs and happens throughout the book, with multiple characters, yet as the reader you are to just assume ANY power you can think of exist. But not everyone has power so don't assume anything. - The book is too long. At least 7 different chapters felt like a conclusion chapter or the climax of the story before I was even halfway through. - The multiple points of view were not necessary in this story. I will give you the MFC and MMC, but the side characters, nope. - Nothing of real depth or substance happens between the MFC and MMC to make the reader feel connected to their relationship.
Trigger warnings: - Graphic violence. - Multiple mentions and descriptions of sexual assault.
Wish is a darkly seductive whirlwind that sinks its claws into you from the first glance into Mora’s cursed life. Five stars feel like too few for this tale of twisted love, revenge, and the haunting weight of a centuries-long curse. Mora’s descent into vengeance after Dother’s betrayal is an intricate, gripping exploration of what happens when love and power collide in the most devastating ways.
This talented author doesn’t just hand you a typical romance; she carves out an entire world steeped in secrets, manipulation, and a protagonist who’s as deadly as she is tragic. Mora’s every action drips with the bitterness of her past, and you can’t help but root for her—especially when she twists the wishes of those who think they can control her. Her pain, her anger, and her cold resolve in the face of an unimaginable curse pulse through the pages, making her the kind of anti-heroine we love to fear.
Then there’s Zadriel, the brooding Fae whose conflicted feelings for Mora are deliciously electric. Their dynamic is a powder keg of tension, attraction, and resentment, with sparks flying every time they’re forced to work together. As Mora unearths Dother’s darkest secrets, and the full horror of her curse is revealed, you’re dragged deeper into this heart-stopping story that merges fantasy with a touch of horror.
With each wish Mora grants, the stakes climb, and just when you think you know what’s coming, Sara flips the narrative, leaving you stunned and craving more. This is no fairy tale—it’s a razor-edged exploration of betrayal, vengeance, and the kind of love that destroys everything in its path.
Wish is a masterclass in character dynamics, particularly in how bonds—both broken and forced—shape the narrative. Mora is a woman undone by love, yet reforged by vengeance, and I am OBSESSED.
I sat this aside for a new release a week ago. I realized I have no desire to continue it. It’s been 300 years but her trauma responses reads like it was 3 weeks ago. The story is bogged down with every other page being some kind a trauma response or memory. Neat idea in general.
Too. Much. Torture. *trigger warnings and spoilers*
Look, I get that it's dark romantasy. And I'm fine with a little trauma and torture for the plot. But HOLY HELL! This was entirely too much. I ended up skipping around throughout the book because I was SO tired of reading about her either past or current abuse.
First, it's the POS named Dother. And getting to read all about his torture and rape in flashbacks. Then it's FMC and MMC's current tortures with Andras.
The torture ended up being most of the book!! It felt like a slog to get through, and it was made worse by constant flashbacks.
I love dark romantasy but this, I guess, is where i draw the line. I don't need pages and pages worth of carved out fingernails and broken bodies to know what they're enduring.
It felt like trauma porn and I'm glad I gave up on it.
If you've ever wanted a book about a genie in a bottle (with some added murderous rage), look no further. Wish brings the magic of a genie in a bottle, but with lots of feminine rage and revenge. Mora is understandably filled with rage, having been tricked and trapped/cursed to remain with her flask and provide wishes to her Keeper. But be careful what you wish for as she will find a way to twist the wishes intent. Zadriel is similarly cursed to remain with the bloodline that cursed Mora and in a way they are destined to find each other. I love Mora and Zadriel together, helping each other to heal and to move past the trauma they've both been subjected to. This book will make you rage right alongside Mora. She certainly hasn't had an easy journey and it's not over yet. I'm looking forward to what comes next. I need to see Mora regain control of herself.
3.25⭐️ was something different but still didn’t make it better… it’s missing something that keeps you interested and something to look forward to the end …
This is a beautifully written, dark, and heartbreaking story of a betrayal that shaped Mora into the cunning, resilient monster that she is. The first book of the Onyx Mist series introduces you to an interesting world with a Forbidden Forest, fae, magic, and morally grey/black characters.
Mora, the main FMC, is bound by magic to a bottle and must grant the Keeper of the bottle 3 wishes of their choosing. After 300 years of being bound and cursed, Mora is full of rage and has become the villain of many Keepers’ stories.
Many of the men in Mora’s world are selfish and cruel, but one who shares similar trauma and heartache manages to break the boundaries of the wall she built around her heart. There is so much darkness in this story but there are also such beautiful and tender moments between the two MCs that will make your heart melt. Their journeys of survival, healing, and hope have only just begun and I can’t wait to see what comes next for them- even though I’m sure there will be more heartache to come 😅.
The villains are truly awful- which I appreciate because the more I despise them, the better it is when they finally meet their downfall.
I highly recommend you read this series if you love: ✨dark romantasy ✨feminine rage ✨trauma/healing ✨flashbacks ✨enemies to lovers ✨forced proximity ✨magic, fae, sentient forest ✨multi POV ✨awful villains and interesting side characters
Thank you to the author for an advanced review copy- all thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
Why did no one tell me this book was like everything i didn’t know I ever needed.
Mora is my morally grey FMC and my newest queen to hold the title for having peak feminine rage!! Like I was not ready and now I am more than ready to worship the ground she walks on! Her story is my new lifeline and like I will not be moving on.
Zadriel. Aka Zaddy!! Okay okay OKAYYYY!! Like sir I am sat. I just wanted to wrap him up and not let go.
I really don’t know how to move on. It’s been 20+ days and I am still out here thinking about them.
- Peak feminine rage FMC - Cinnamon yet I will obliterate anyone who touches you MMC - Lovers TO enemies - Dark magic and curses - Enemies to lovers - Morally grey our favourite shade - Genie in a bottle retelling
I am unwell and undone in the best sense after reading this.

"I've thought of you with every breath, saw your face every time l've closed my eyes, felt the echo of your touch on my skin. You've embedded yourself in my soul, and I do not wish for you to leave."
This was a hauntingly traumatic dark fantasy story about managing trauma. Mora and Zadriel are two lost souls, each fighting for their humanity, and when these fated mates finally collide, it's a bittersweet moment filled with hope and love. The author has a lyrical style that enables you to capture the imagery of the story in your mind as you read along, but the artwork she has commissioned takes it to another level and I'm so thankful I had these to look at as I embarked on Mora's journey. This story was filled with so many things, but I feel like there is so much more to come, and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
The way this book began made me think it was going to be a 5 star. It was not a 5 star by the end, but it had potential and that’s cool. The romance was just not good. It was really insta lovey, no true enemies to lovers. Just overall not balanced well with the plot. Yes, yes I am aware of the mate blah blah stuff, but it was just too much too fast and it made everything else confusing. The newer characters towards the latter half of the book were soooooo annoying. Honestly, a lot of the characters were annoying, even the main ones. That being said, I liked the main characters a lot overall, everything just fell flat by the end of the story and I couldn’t deal anymore.
I would have loved to give this 5 stars because for some parts of the book, it was definitely 5 stars. But, for about half, it couldn't keep me invested. The slow burn isn't slow enough, and the storyline flips on occasion. Then, there's lack of communication that would have avoided a few issues nearing the end. I HATE miscommunication or lack thereof when it could so OBVIOUSLY level things out if used. I don't know if I even want to read book two. Sure, the first half was fantastic, but the writer got a head of herself, I think. And Zadriel seems a bit too sissy for an MFC.
I enjoyed this book! My heart broke for what Mora (and Zadriel) went through (check trigger warnings) but she is so resilient and strong! I don’t always like when chapters go back in time but it made us understand her story. I liked that the magic was different and I look forward to reading book 2 whenever it comes out.
What a journey this is ! Mora is my favorite heroine! She is strong and she doesn't left anybody to tell what she need to do! And zadriel? Is have my heart as well! I hope he can find freedom with mora !! I can't wait to read the next !
Not only does Wish have EVERYTHING I love in dark fantasy romance, it delivers a unique heart wrenching experience. Wish has a genie, fae, blood magic and evil evil villains that will leave you feeling a little murderous right alongside Mora.
Wow! Mora is hands down one of the most badass heroines I’ve ever read about. The things she’s been through? Absolutely heartbreaking. My heart aches so much for both her and Zadriel. I’ve never seen a character endure so much pain and suffering, and it made me feel every bit of it too. Zadriel’s childhood and his own torment were just as gut-wrenching, and don’t get me started on how much I loathed Cillian and Andras Dother. I was so furious at them that at one point, I wished I could get into the book and kill them myself!
This story took me on an emotional rollercoaster—sadness, pain, love, happiness, and anger. I love books that make me feel so deeply. From the very beginning, I was hooked, and even though it’s somewhere about 500 pages, it didn’t feel that long because the story flowed so smoothly. I also loved Mora's power or curse, I was in awe with what she can do. The story does not end here, and I cannot wait for the next book to come out now!
As a huge fan of Romantasy, this one definitely stands out, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves a strong, badass heroine. Just make sure to read the trigger warnings before diving in. Oh, and the multiple POVs? I loved that aspect too!
Rozhodne to malo viac mínusov než plusov. ALE som rada, že som to nevzdala. Od nejakej strany 100-150 ma to začalo baviť viac. Ostávali sme viac v súčasnosti a v hlave hlavnej hrdinky, čo nám konečne poskytlo možnosť na to, aby sme ju začali chápať.
Really wanted to like this book it’s really well written and I loved the characters and the plot for it, just wasn’t my cup of tea but can totally understand why people would love it
The main romance moved a bit too quickly for me, the main characters both blame each other for the situation they’re currently in, which has been hundreds of years of blaming each other, and definitely see each other as enemies, but in the space of one or two pages the fmc finds something out about the mmc’s situation and is suddenly really attached and she’s stuck in a room having panic attacks and crying into a pillow as if the love of her life is on the other side of the door
It was a great scene on its own but it felt like whiplash considering she hated him a couple of pages earlier and the new her didn’t seem like she just feels horrible for him and she changed her mind about hating him, which definitely wouldn’t happen in the space of a few paragraphs. It was like they were in love and had been together for years and she was having a breakdown being locked away from it
Other than that it was a little dark for me, some brutal violence in it and a lot of sexual/near sexual assault which just wasn’t pleasant to read about. I understood this for the backstory and really felt for the situation she was in, but it just happened a bit too often and was really unpleasant to read about. We get a flashback of her murdering one of the villains and it’s so brief compared to the assault scenes that I didn’t even understand what had happened at first because it was like two paragraphs for it.
Also I think it might be better as a second read, the book has frequent flash backs which is great for uncovering the fmc’s backstory but at 70% of the way through I found it really frustrating because the current setting was taking so long to get anywhere and find information out. Every time you got a bit closer there’d be a flashback chapter and at that point I felt we knew all we needed to know and the actual story should’ve just continued or just have her talk to people about past events and not make the story drag especially when the flashback was just another SA scene.
The mmc had no flashbacks so his scenes worked perfect for this, I wanted more of them actually because he felt absent for a lot of the book. But when it came to his backstory it was just things the fmc pieced together which he later told us about us or someone else hinted about and it felt like we really knew about the character and the story progressed at the same time.
My only other gripe is the writing got a bit confusing sometimes. It’s written in third person but the perspective changes and it was so hard to keep up with when the perspective changed every chapter but it was the same situation, you couldn’t keep track of whose emotions it was because the names were all in third person including the perspectives.
At 80% of the way through I just thought it wasn’t for me, loved the idea and characters especially how the mc was bound to her captor but the romance moved so quickly I didn’t believe it at all. Even if they’re fated I don’t think it should’ve been I hate him for the past 300 years to pet names and I need him near me to make sure he’s ok and it’s agonising being apart within a few pages
By this point as well the situation was so interesting which is why I nearly finished it, we’d met characters the mmc grew up with and were in the area he originated from, and the villain had bound us in a way I really wanted to know how the situation resolved but the romance writing just ruined it all for me.
The moment I picked this book up, I was completely enthralled. Shucking all responsibility seemed like the only thing to do as I greedily devoured Wish!
Feminine rage is alive and well in our morally grey FMC, Mora. Her journey was one ripe with heartbreak, trauma, vengence, and so much more. But also, one with hints of hope, as she finally meets the one person that can help tame her fury! But will it be enough?
There were plenty of twist and turns, especially with that ending! Oh, and the most evil of villains out there! Let me tell you, the wool over your eyes will quickly fade as true intentions are revealed!
Wow was the only word I could utter after I finished this book. Legit stared at the wall trying to process it all and wishing for the next book to materialize! I cannot wait to see what comes next!
Wish by Sara Flanagan was one of those books that was heavily promoted to me through TikTok and Instagram, and as much as I know to take those recommendations with a grain of salt, I couldn’t resist diving in. As a huge fan of the romantasy genre, I was excited to explore a new world filled with Fae, curses, and a unique twist involving a genie-like character and an enchanter. While the book had a lot of promise, it ultimately left me with mixed feelings.
The premise of the story is fresh and intriguing—fated mates, a dark villain, and plenty of twists—so I went in with high hopes. However, I found myself struggling with a few aspects of the narrative. The book is definitely on the darker side of the romantasy spectrum, and personally, I found it to be a little too dark for my tastes. The themes of torture and assault were especially heavy, and while I understand these elements can serve the plot and the character development, they felt a bit much at times. This might be a personal preference, but I felt some of these darker themes were pushed a little too far.
One of my main issues with Wish was the number of unnecessary character perspectives. There were several points where additional viewpoints seemed to distract rather than enrich the story, leaving me to question their inclusion. I appreciate complexity in character development, but some of these perspectives didn’t feel necessary for moving the plot forward, which made the narrative feel a bit cluttered.
That said, I was intrigued by the love story between the two main characters. At first, I thought the relationship felt a little forced, and I wasn’t entirely sure about the development of Zadriel’s character. However, as the story progressed, I began to understand why the author wrote him and their relationship the way she did. It became clear that the challenges they faced were integral to the overall character arcs, and in hindsight, I could appreciate the depth Flanagan was trying to build.
Sara Flanagan excels at creating a villain who truly gets under your skin. I was so invested in hating the antagonist that I found myself screaming at the book during some intense moments. On the flip side, Mora, the dark grey female protagonist, was one of my favorite elements. She wasn’t purely good or evil, and her complexity made her a captivating lead who kept me engaged even when the story veered into darker territory.
Finally, the cliffhanger ending left me feeling both raging and impressed. It was a roller coaster that wrapped up with a twist that I was hoping for but wasn't too optimistic for. I’m not usually one for cliffhangers, but this one was done in a way that made me want to see where the story goes next, even though it left me with a fair amount of frustration.
In conclusion, Wish is a book that I’d recommend to readers who enjoy a darker, more intense take on the romantasy genre, especially if you're okay with themes of trauma and hardship. While it didn’t fully hit the mark for me in terms of tone and pacing, I can appreciate the world-building, the complexity of Mora, and the author’s ability to craft a truly detestable villain. If you’re a fan of dark, twisted love stories with a dash of magic and an unforgettable ending, this one might be worth picking up. Just be prepared for some heavy moments along the way.
My friends if you haven’t read this book I urgently tell you that you should. The story is so unique and beautifully crafted this world the author built is like no other, Morally grey characters…Mora and her feminine rage is chef’s kiss. I took my time reading this book savoring every minute because I knew the story doesn’t end with this book. I loved it so much I am waiting for the next book and can’t wait to get my hands on it. The magic system is stunning. In a world where halflings want to fit in and have a life… we find betrayal, love, sacrifice. Friendship and more. Mora and Zadriel are everything ❤️ I have three words for you. Read This Book!
𝑀𝑦 𝑇ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠💭🧐 Thank you so much to @saraflanaganbooks & @rrbooktours for my gifted review copy of 𝑾𝒊𝒔𝒉! This review is comprised entirely of my own thoughts & opinions, & is based on the copy I received.
Buckle up everyone, because this book was a wild ride from start to finish and I loved every second of it! I DEVOURED this book! I couldn’t put it down. I neglected all my adult responsibilities for a couple of days because I was so enthralled in this world that Sara created with the first book in the Onyx Mist series. Full of twists and turns, beautifully flawed characters, and the touch of darkness that made this book so unbelievably amazing, this is definitely one that is going in my top reads of the year.
Mora, our FMC, is one of my new favorites. She was full of all the feminine rage, and rightfully so. I knew from the very moment I met her that I would justify all her actions because her story is full of trauma and heartbreak. Through all of her trauma, though, you can see a little bit of hope and light at the end of the tunnel as she meets the one who might be able to help her tame all her fury. As we meet and get to know Zadriel and his role in the story, we start to see their relationship unfold and their transition from enemies to lovers was perfection. Their healing journey is so beautiful and I loved witnessing it. It was definitely one that gripped me emotionally and made me truly invested in the story.
This book has stayed with me since I finished it a few days ago and I literally cannot stop thinking about it. It just checked every box for me and I loved it so much. I already need and can’t wait for the next book!
📋𝐓𝐋𝐃𝐑: Fantastic book! Perfect dark fantasy romance and you aren’t going to want to miss it.
Dark and devious! I loved it! This book hooked me from the start and I loved every moment of it!!
The story was unique and interesting. I love the concept and can’t wait to see more.
The characters… oh man where do I start. Let’s start with Mora. She’s a complicated woman with a dark past full of trauma. She’s also fierce, protective, and powerful. I loved her viciousness!
Zadriel was mysterious and intriguing. I enjoyed getting to know him and unraveling some of his mysteries. He’s definitely more of a cinnamon roll compared to Mora’s ruthlessness but there’s no mistaking he can be just as protective.
I really can’t wait to see more of them together and of course where the story goes after everything that happened.
This book was full of fantastic tropes like; enemies to allies to lovers, soul mates, fae, magic, villainous characters, morally black characters, trauma romance, hurt/comfort, touch him/her and xx, feminine rage, curses and bonds, dark fantasy, redemption, multiple POVs, and so much more!!
I can’t recommend this book enough and I’m so excited for the next one!
If you love dark fantasy romance with some faes, genies, some fierce feminine rage, and some evil characters, look no further because this is the book for you!!
Wish is a beautifully written story and it will pull you in from the very first page. It has a very gripping storyline, and the storytelling was chef's kiss- I absolutely loved it and fell in love with the main characters
Absolutely fucking yes. Wow. All the hype for this book was on point. This was literally everything I love in a book, done right. It's dark and twisted, cunning and devious, deliciously spicy, emotionally damaging, with just enough twists to make you verbally shout at the book. All the characters, both good and bad, were done extremely well and I can't wait to keep reading.
It was such a relief that the multi-pov and flashbacks were done right. After just coming off a book where it felt like whiplash, I was a little nervous, but it was fantastic. All the breaks and added insight came at the perfect times.
10/10 would recommend. Honestly half tempted to just read it all over again.
From the very first page, Wish had me hooked. The imagery was stunning, the tension immediate, and by page fifty, things were already heating up. I didn’t need any more convincing—I was all in.
At first, the dual timeline threw me off. One storyline pulled me in more than the other, and I found myself wanting to rush through just to get back to the one I preferred. But then, something shifted. The way the timelines wove together made me read faster and faster, each chapter revealing something new, something that made both stories even more compelling. By the time I realized how brilliantly they intertwined, I couldn’t put the book down.
And then there were the characters—the perfect enemies-to-lovers dynamic. The tension, the push and pull, the banter—oh, the banter! Every interaction crackled with energy, and the slow-burn romance was everything I wanted. I knew I was in for a treat the moment I realised the different tropes as I read along.
But it wasn’t just the romance that stood out. The attention to detail in this book was breathtaking. Every little moment, every carefully crafted line of dialogue, felt intentional. The world-building was rich without ever feeling overwhelming, and having a map to refer to was a small but incredibly thoughtful touch.
That’s not to say everything was perfect. Some sentences were a little clunky, and I had to reread them a couple of times to fully grasp what was being said. It wasn’t a dealbreaker by any means—just a small hiccup in an otherwise captivating read. I also would have love a little more explaining about the magic system, but who knows what book 2 has in store for us!
And then came the ending. The ending. I was not prepared for that open conclusion, and now I need book two immediately. When is it coming? How long do I have to suffer? Because I need to know what happens next.
This book made me laugh, made me swoon, made me feel warm and fuzzy in the best way. Flanagan crafted something truly special here. The dual timeline and different POV’s were executed beautifully, the characters were layered and complex, and the emotional build-up was nothing short of masterful.
A story about a woman who went through hell and back—and still fought. A book that made every breath, every word, every connection matter. And a new favorite I won’t stop thinking about anytime soon. This book is a definite 4,5 star read for me!
Wish is a story that will stick with you for a long time. It is a story full of emotions, filled with pain, rage, and hate, but also with love and devotion. Wish is a true dark fantasy, as dark as they come. But don't let that notion deter you; it is a story deserving your time and feelings.
Wish is Book 1 in the Ony Mist series by Sara Flanagan, releasing on October 22nd. Honestly, I am honoured by being allowed to be one of Sara's ARC readers, and Wish deserves all the hype it can get.
Now, you may see mentions of a genie in a bottle; it may remind you of Aladdin's story. It is anything but. Wish is a story that goes much deeper and delves into the deepest, most devious parts of us. It is a story of truly morally grey (black) characters. It is a story that will break your heart so many times. But it is a story of hope showing itself in the direst of situations. A story of love emerging where only hate and pain rule. A story of the deepest devotion never disappearing in front of cruelty and evil. A story of two people finding each other when they thought all was lost. A story to keep close.
The plot was so masterfully executed; it was full of unexpected twists and turns, each one more surprising than the last, making you not want to let go. Sara has created such a rollercoaster of emotions, and I know you will love it as much as I did. Just keep your tissues near. Sara will gift you themes and tropes such as curses and binding magic, betrayals, loss, feminine rage, trauma rep, hurt/comfort, and so much more.
Wish is so much more than a story of a girl trapped by binding magic by a cruel master; it is a story of beautifully executed characters, plot, and setting, one that will make you forget you are reading and transport you somewhere else. Trust me, you absolutely need to read and experience Wish. And you need to experience the cliffhanger Sara leaves us with; I need the company to keep me going until we have Book 2 in our arms.
Sara Flanagan's debut dark fantasy romance, Wish, is a seductive read that draws you in and leaves you spiral until the very last page.
Sara does a wonderful job of building this dark, sinister world that slowly comes into focus (don't expect to understand it all until the very end...she is keeping us on our toes!). Mora, trapped by a curse that demands she perform the wishes of whoever holds her flask, tries to escape from a devious bent on making a name for himself and controlling her world. However, as she tries to fight against her curse, she is drawn into a much larger story of fate, love, and betrayal.
The FMC, Mora, is female rage personified -- and honestly, she has every reason to be. I felt for her character. She spends much of her human life under an evil monster only to be cursed to serve different Keepers, who all demand wishes from her. She is haunted by memories of her past and her previous experiences. They are dark moments.
Zadriel was such a fun character to read about. Trapped under his own curse, Mora and Zadriel cross paths as they are control by the same repugnant villain (yes, REPUGNANT). Zadriel's story is slowly revealed and you find his childhood has been a dark one as he has been trapped for most of it. What I love most though is that Zadriel is a cinnamon roll with k*ller frosting. He is sweet, caring, and the perfect mate for Mora -- who needs that in her life.
Sara does a beautiful job of highlight their romance in the sweetest way amongst the much darker stories of their past and their current predicament. It makes you truly favor their romance (and the spice doesn't hurt either).
Please check the TWs and CWs on this one as it does deal with some darker themes, especially in Mora and Zadriel's pasts.
This is the first book in the Onyx Mist series, a dark romantasy high on emotion and angst where everyone is morally (dark) gray. Tropes and themes include feminine rage, fated mates, enemies to lovers, lovers to enemies (different couple), touch him/her and die, binding magic and curses, trauma rep, and hurt/comfort. There are numerous very dark elements to this story so please read the trigger warnings.
The Lovely: I love the main characters of this story with my whole (currently hurting) heart. They are flawed and definitely morally dark gray but also so fierce, and protective, and all around just perfect. They take you on an emotional roller coaster ride that had me laughing, shaking my head, throwing my kindle across the room and crying (more than once, on a re-read). Buckle up and grab a few boxes of tissues.
Also Lovely: When you hear wishes and bottle (well, flask), you might be thinking genie and Aladdin and cute Disney characters. This is not that. This is exquisitely dark and deep, with a plot that grabs you and doesn’t let go until after the shocker of an ending. The plot is expertly woven in with the characters, their relationships and the setting (just wait for the forest) to such a degree you’ll forget you’re reading a book.

Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. There’s so much more I could say to gush about this book but instead I want to go back to what I wrote to Sara right after beta reading because it sums up my thoughts best: *Wow. wow. wow. wow. This was so good and hit all the sweet spots for a good novel - makes you feel, cliffy ending, and a plot that is woven with the characters and relationships. This was well and truly dark. It was perfection and I want to read more LIKE THIS.*
Sara Flanagan has completely captivated me with her debut novel. This dark fantasy romance is exquisitely written, sinking its teeth into your heart and tossing your emotions around like an angry dog.
Mora is an incredible FMC with a deeply heartbreaking past, she’s been cursed and bound to a flask by a truly monstrous villain that is so damn easy to loathe. Having endured so much, she is understandably filled with feminine rage, haunted by her memories, and fueled by pain, trauma, and anger. While she's fierce and deadly, she undeniably has a tender side buried deep within—one that takes time to surface after centuries of suffering, which understandably led her to hide it away for survival.
As we meet Zadriel, we gradually uncover his own dark narrative and begin to understand his part in the whole story, and the transformation of their relationship from enemies to lovers is both sweet and spicy. There are some truly beautiful moments between him and Mora, and their shared journey towards healing truly tugs at your heartstrings.
The plot is insanely interesting, filled with deep, dark twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. I honestly didn’t want to put my Kindle down. I already cannot wait for the next book!
