Malcolm Marriner returns to work after a week's annual leave and discovers he has become the victim of a mysterious and vindictive stalker. But what do they want from him, and how can he escape their vice-like grip on his life? Set in London, Watford and the Outer Hebrides, this dark, fast-paced and entertaining novel features numerous plot twists and black humour to sustain the reader's attention throughout. Contains adult themes, including prostitution, addiction, love-making, misandry and infidelity. It also contains strong language.
The seedy underbelly of the corporate world is exposed in the first half of this novel; the selfish relationships based purely on sexual gratification, long depressing hours in the office, loneliness, gambling, drinking and drug taking, pressure, scheming, commuting, the vacuity of it all despite the high income. I liked the all-nighter. Lead character Malcolm then discovers an alternative way of living, a purpose and redemption perhaps. I enjoyed it, there were plenty of surprises along the way, things were not always as they seemed. Strong contrast between London and the Outer Hebrides.
I'm glad I persevered with this book. If you can get past the slightly strange and overly long sex scenes at the start, it turns into a touching love story set against the backdrop of the wild Outer Hebrides. Malcolm is rather lovely and funny in his own way and you'll find yourself rooting for him. The ending is very sad.
