It was almost as if he had been watching me… studying me.

The harder I resisted him, the more dangerous the consequences became.

First, he took my family.
Then, my home.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ three stars -

I was thrilled to see that a new Zoe Blake was released this week. Lots of fellow reviewers have been busy reviewing this over the past few days, and I was immediately intrigued with the discovery that this new Duet (this book is Part I) features Richard’s brother from Blake’s popular dark romance, the recently retitled Dark Obsession Trilogy.

I personally thought that the original Dark Obsession Trilogy (note that the title is a revamp, and that these original books were previously published under different names) was stellar dark romance. That series is edgy, hot, and intriguingly dark. I just loved it lol. The Hero in that trilogy is truly warped, and he makes that story. There’s a reason that Blake constantly gains new readers, and her Hero of that original trilogy, Richard, is that reason.

As soon as I saw that the Hero here, Roman, is Richard’s brother, I immediately high-tailed it over to Kindle and downloaded this one. It’s currently on KU, so easy peasy. I was ready to enjoy some dark, edgy, crazy train romance 📖😂

************

MILD SPOILER ALERT

************

If you’ve been browsing the reviews here like I originally did (I always check the one and two star reviews to try and decipher what triggering content is included - I find that most lower starred reviews usually hit the reason why the person didn’t like it/stopped reading more succinctly), you will see that there are quite a few reviewers that stopped at about the 17%-20% mark. What’s the reason?? Well, I’ll tell you…

Here are the reasons that I am disappointed in this book:

* the story begins with our teenager heroine - she’s a senior in high school! Yes, you read that right. We have a deep dark (this is Zoe Blake, after all 💁‍♀️) romance here with a heroine that’s in hs!!

* the heroine thinks to herself, more than once, about the fact that our Hero/anti Hero/villain here is “twice her age”. I’m sorry, but ICK. I’m sometimes okay with May December, but given the fact that our heroine is 17 going on 18, it’s just too much. All I think of is nasty older man grooming a child. Just - no.

* the scene at 17% - highly disturbing. I almost stopped reading right then and there, and I can absolutely see why other readers stopped at this point and shelved to dnf. He sexually assaults her. On the night of her eighteenth birthday. She’s a child. He’s pushing forty. If that’s sexy to anyone, you can unfriend me right now. This scene is sickening, and highly appalling. The ONLY reason I continued is due to the fact that I generally do enjoy Blake, and I was hoping that she would be able to recover the story from this point.

* I personally never could get past the fact that our heroine is a mere eighteen years old. Every sexual encounter was not sexy to this reader. It only brought to light that besides the other dark nuances of our H’s character, there is also something inherently wrong with a grown ass man having sex with a teenager who’s not even old enough to drink, gamble, or able to legally conduct a host of other adult activities on her own. What on earth does a late thirty something man want with a teenager? Well, we all know the answer to that one 🤢.

************

END MILD SPOILER

************

Overall, this story is not nearly as engaging as the Dark Obsession Trilogy imo. The child heroine here makes the age gap in this one too much for this reader to stomach. The Hero’s villain-like actions are hampered by the fact that he’s torturing a child. I just couldn’t get on board with any of the same shock and awe factor that was present in the aforementioned Dark Obsession Trilogy.

Will I read Part II of this duet? Yes, but here’s hoping that there’s a time lapse and our heroine ages 🤞. Otherwise, I’m sure to have the same issues with Part II, which is titled, “Vicious Games”.

In sum, this is Blake, so it’s well-written dark smut. Unfortunately, “Cruel Games” steers away from the fun edginess that Blake normally excels at, and veers into the uncomfortably deviant. Reading about teenager heroines is not my jam.

If you’re new to Blake, go check out books I-III (the trilogy of this series). I highly recommend Richard and Elizabeth’s story for those that like edgy, dark, out-of-the box smut. Those books are quite well done. This last installment, not so much.

Three disappointed stars.

The spirited 18-year-old Aurora Barlowe has been unwittingly caught up in the sins of her (step-)father. The embezzlement, having been uncovered by the ruthless Roman Winterbourne, created an opportunity for him to take his pound of flesh.

Despite moments of submission, Rory is prepared to fight the Bastard Duke with her last breath. Conversely, Roman is manipulative and unrepentant, singleminded in his acquisition of the unsullied pianist.

This dark romance, with its parallels to Jane Eyre, is gritty and tantalizing. But don’t expect our antihero to soften along the way, you will not find a cinnamon roll here. 🖤

Are you looking for romance? you won't find it here.

Outrageous, twisted, very wrong and deliciously obscene.

We have a damsel in distress.

A manipulative, psycho-crazy, sadist, and obsessive Hero.

And age gap.
Not a life-changing tale, but very entertaining.😈😏

Highlight reel of this dumpster fire 🔥🔥🔥

- an 18 year (and 2 months) old heroine doesn't have a working lightbulb in her room FOR YEARS as proof of parental neglect 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ hon, how hard it is for YOU to change a lightbulb at EIGHTTEEN? 🤡🤡🤡

- an 18 year (and 2 months) old heroine proceeds to convince the reader how the parental neglect was a good thing, because now she is "forged in the hard school of life" and can apparently cook meals for herself and deal with bills and lying to authorities 🤣 Such a shame this highly versatile skillset didn't include lightbulb changing technics 😅👌

- scum of the Earth parents incoming: the mother and step-father are painted in a one-dimentional, cartoony way of villains, who verbally and physically abuse the heroine, body shame her, slut shame her after she'd been sexually assaulted by the hero, the step-father assaults her sexually himself and tries to rape her, and every other vile and horrible thing under the sun happens to the heroine at the hands of this "parents" just to show how good it'll be with the hero, even though he is a pathetic psycho 😬👀💀

- OTT possessive, obsessive alpha-hole billionaire, who is actually one of my fav tropes IF DONE CORRECTLY, but it's NOT the case here 🥱🙄 the hero lacks finesse of execution such a character usually demands. his posturing and constant inner thoughts of some "great plan" he has for the heroine makes him sound like a crazed idiot and not the scary "mOnStEr" the author is trying to make him out to be🤮

- the hero lives in a CHURCH 🤷🏼‍♀️ Why? who the fuck knows, but it's there in all of it's messed up glory.

- two people were shot dead mere minutes after each other, yet the coroner could tell beyond a shadow of a doubt who was shot first and who second 🤣🤡

The book was filled with stupid little details and the plot was so lazily executed🤔

When I tell you I ate this up I did!! When I heard this was Richard's brothers book I was ready we know how much I had a love/hate relationship with that man. So I won't give to much away in this review because I want you all to read this book.

Aurora baby just didn't know she caught the eyes of a madman until it was kinda to late. Her birthday just past and now Roman has his eyes on her. There relationship went from 0 to 100 fast he already claiming her but he's doing it in his own twisted sick games. Making sure she has no way out. Like I kid you not Roman has his hands in her school life, home life lies and sneaky stuff he has done. Aurora knows its Roman who's ruining her life but she really doesn't have solid proof
shes in his trap and as of right now she has no choice but to play Roman's games BUT she isn't going down with out a fight and believe me alot has been stacked against her.

We got some Richard and the timeline for his book. I want some more brother vs brother to see what they do to one another and waiting to see what Roman and Aurora do to eachother in book 2.

No ow/om drama (a ex was in it for second), no cheating, drama, slight secondary character, sexy times, virgin gal and no manwhore

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trope: Obsessed hero
Angst: 😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Whelp. Not even sure what to think about Roman, lol. Kinda psycho? A lotta psycho? Jealous, possessive, obsessive - definitely. He goes after Aurora with a single mindedness that has been unseen by this reader with ALL the heroes that have come before him, lol. Seriously. Aurora never stands a chance against his manipulations. Fast paced with TONS of hot smexy, Cruel Games is a completely over the top snack and I gobbled it right up like it was my last meal 🙈. I mean, I kinda hope Roman gets redeemed just a little bit in book two, maybe just a little? But I'm thinking I may like it just as much if he doesn't 🤷🏻‍♀️.

3.75 - 4 stars!

“It was always going to be you, my love. No matter what, even if I had to become the devil himself, you were always fated to be mine.”

Roman is certifiably insane. He is next level possessive, obsessive, and dominant. His single minded pursuit of Aurora is next level and there is NO line he won't cross to bind Aurora to him forever. Roman saw Aurora one day and decided she was it for him and he puts a plan in motion to completely destroy Aurora's life so he is the only person she can depend on and turn to.

Toxic? Abso-fucking-lutely.

"I didn’t just want her love, I wanted her soul, her body, her everything. I wanted her entire world to not just revolve around me, but to depend on me as well. I wanted her to be nothing without me. That way, she would never leave me. She’d have no choice but to fall in love with me. After all, I would be her savior, her prince, her protector. The only one who didn’t abandon her in her time of need."

Roman's games are twisted, just about irredeemable, and so far past ok that I hated and loved him equally. Aurora is fully aware of part of Roman's involvement in the shift of her life but she is basically powerless to stop him. However, I really enjoyed the softness of her character because Roman was such a cruel/cold character.

“You feel that, kitten? That’s the only fucking cock you’ll ever know.”

If you are a fan of dark romance that pushes boundaries, then I definitely recommend this. It is dark, gritty, and WILL piss you off. But you'll find yourself somehow rooting for their relationship to grow into more than possession. I'm hoping that Roman redeems himself a little in book two even though I don't expect him to be anything but unapologetic for doing all he can to make Aurora his. There is something romantic about how much he wants her to need him. I also look forward to seeing Aurora fight back in her own way because I can tell she is getting a backbone of steel.

Why a lower rating? Well I would have preferred Aurora to be older and the first scene between the two of them was quite off putting. This is Zoe Blake though and I expected some taboo. I have not read the trilogy with Richard but he did make an appearance with his love. Overall, I really liked this book. It was steamy/kinky and had Zoe's signature alpha male and vulnerable heroine that never sees the devil coming.

what a ride! OTT obsessed JP alpha H/non & dub con galorrreee

Oh man!! Whyyyyy was I avoiding this book? When I heard Zoe was writing Richard’s brother- I was like nope not gonna read it. I HATED Richard y’all. I think I didn’t even finished book 2 bc I honestly felt like he didn’t love her at all. ROMAN IS NOTTTT RICHARD. He is cruel in the BESTTTTT way. Omg. 🥵

The things😈
-OTT JP manipulative obsessed H. Roman has manipulated everything thing to basically take everything away from Aurora and make her only his.
-Touch her and find out.. he doesn’t like anyone to touch her, look at her to long. I loveeee it lol
-manipulative… oh god I loveeee this. He gets rid of her parents, her schooling, takes away her pathway to university she’s been looking forward to to get out of her life. He wants to be her EVERYTHING.
-age gap ((h is 18 .. H is 30ish maybe? Idk lol))
-Non con / extremely dub con juice 🔥 I mean EVERY encounter is basically him slamming her around and taking what he wants lol. She isn’t really into it at all but at some point she def realizes she is. Lol this def to me more non con and I FKn loved it.
-hair pulling, hands on the throat ✋🏼, SPANKINGGGGG with a hand and a belt and a little pointer thing at school (like a cane), alllll the forc3. He ties her to the bed after 🥜’ing all over her face and breast so it can dry on her while he showers… I DIED 🥵😮‍💨
-he js rough but he does care for her. He takes care of her, he finds her and gets her taken care of when sick, he rubs her hair, forehead kisses and I loved all that. It shows you even though he can be cruel he does care for her
-we see Richard and Elizabeth and now I kinda wanna try that series again but Fk man … I hated him. I didn’t feel like he cared about Liz at all.
-CLIFFY… yesssss b*tch3s 😭😭 it’s not a terrible one but I want the next book NOW. I think it comes out in Nov.
-NO OW/No cheating

This was sooooooo damn good. I couldn’t stop reading it. Gimme the next book!

SA is not for me. It’s not “dark romance”. It’s not fun to read, especially a 30 something year old man r@ping an 18 y/old . If you enjoyed it, hm.
This author is on my blacklist, it’s not her first book that I have read with these acts in them, and judging from the summery and reviews of her other books, all of her books contain some form of SA between the FMC and the love interest. Not a fan.

Cruel Games starts with a jaw dropping scene, setting the pace and storyline with suspense, danger and unbridled passion. Aurora is exposed to us as being desperate in her plight, thinking she has no choice in what she is going through. Then the story goes back to give the reader the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking moment.
Roman is a demanding and exact man. He saw Aurora and she never stood a chance from his insertion in her life and his devious manipulations.
A spectacular ending with a cliffhanger that makes me crave more.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. Thank you for your trust in us, Zoe!

Roman Winterbourne is the devastation and temptation your mama never knew two warn us, girls, about, and Aurora is the poor little fly caught in his web of lies, deception, obsession, and downright madness. Roman is the younger illegitimate half-brother of Richard Payne, although the brothers positively loath one another and take a sadistic level of pleasure trying to best one another in their games of topping one another as titans of industry. They also unwittingly compete in an unconventional and high-stakes game of attempting to possess the women they have deemed their possessions, whether said women want to be the object of the manic obsession. Aurora is the teenage step-daughter of one of Roman's executives, and he has decided without preamble that he wants to possess her. This story isn't an insta-love; this is a story of obsession, power plays, and manipulation on a level that board's on psychopathic.

If you're looking for a hero who will spout love, hearts, and flowery pros, this isn't where you'll find it. However, if you're looking for an unapologetic anti-hero who makes no excuses for his ruinous and ruthless pursuit of a girl who only wants to be free of her current misery and dysfunction in the form of her parents, only to unknowingly catch the eye of the natural disaster that is Roman Winterbourne, than please pull up a chair and bring a stiff drink with you, because baby brother Roman makes Richard look like a smidgen of scintilla saner.

I read this book in a few hours. I absolutely couldn't put it down at all; I went to the store it went with me, I cooked dinner, it went with me, I went to the res….well you get it. I screamed, I yelled…I gasped, and my next-door neighbor now thinks I'm a nutter. I finished this book in the wee hours of the morning on a Sunday, and for a week after, it stayed with me. Zoe Blake is a fantastic writer; she doesn't just give you a story or a book but an experience that will introduce you to music, art, and design in the world of rarefied riches and luxury.

This book is a keeper even if you haven't read the first three books in the series, which I highly recommend that you do; Zoe crafted the story so well that it can be read as a standalone, but again don't cheat yourself; READ ALL THE BOOKS you'll never meet any characters like the Winterbourne/Payne men. Happy Reading.

Jesus, I thought I was ready but nothing could make me ready for Cruel Games and Roman in particular. I devoured the book in two nights and honestly hated Zoe a little when I realized that I’d have to wait for book two. I think this qualifies as abuse… I will need to check.
This book was really well written and the story really flows making you want to keep on reading even when adulting suggest you put the kindle down.
Roman is the perfect anti-hero oh who am I kidding Roman is an unrepentant villain and he is absolutely delicious in his devious ways.
He is manipulative, insanely hot, charismatic, absurdly rich, with an ego the size of a house and a ‘package’ to match.
Aurora is spunky and I adore her. She yields when she needs to but he never breaks her spirit and I love her so much for that.
The relationship is dark but with a chemistry to the roof and the spicy scenes should come with a warning because the level of heat will burn you through the pages!
This is the perfect age-gap, enemies-to-lovers villain/innocent heroine dark romance and if it is your jam well let me tell you - you’re in for a treat!
It’s a 5 star to me and I’ll be now harassing… no, I mean ‘asking nicely’ Zoe for the second book!

Cruel Games is book one of the Dark Obsession duet featuring Richard's half brother Roman. I absolutely adore the twisted world Zoe Blake created in this series. Roman is as devious and manipulative as his brother if not a bit less imaginative. I don't think anyone could quite compare to the diabolical games Richard plays with Lizzie, though I'll reserve judgement till the duet is complete. Roman is single mindedly focused on making the 18 year old high school student Aurora his. To that end, he manipulates her already miserable circumstances to his advantage. Aurora is quite innocent though not without some fight and fire. However, I did feel like she was in no way a fair counterpart for Roman on the unequal battlefield he created. This has all the steam you'd expect from Ms. Blake's book and, especially, from Richard's brother. I did feel that Roman's reasons for his obsession with Aurora were quite flimsy. Aurora, on her end, went from hate to love very suddenly. Granted, she's only 18 and was put in an impossible situation, but there was no emotional connection or depth to the relationship yet. And I wouldn't expect there to be at that point, so I would have loved a slower burn when it came to the development of feelings on either side. Having said that, I was thoroughly entertained and can't wait for book two!

sick

This is like train wreck that you can’t look away from. There is lots of not acceptable things going on in this story.

Grooming her into thinking she loves him. Grooming her like very rough painful sex. Grooming her to only depend on him. He is just like domestic abuser who takes everything away except for him. Sick very sick.

I hate when authors have the male lead say well your wet so that means you like it. That’s what rapists say to their victims. Physical response not a turn on or consent to what is happening.

I know this is dark I know this author writes like this. I should have stayed away from the book. The other books in the series really disturbed me so I should have known better.

The writing is great story beyond sick

Aurora and Roman are intense!

Aurora has always been neglected and ignored by her mother. She wants a normal life and just to be loved. Somehow after her 18th birthday, she catches Roman's eyes.

Roman is obsessed with Aurora and will do anything to get her. When Aurora's stepfather owes Roman money, Roman only wants one thing.
Aurora.

This book was dark. Roman is stalking and obsessed with Aurora, he is over-possessive and always in control. Aurora is trying to escape her life and Roman, but she keeps on falling for him despite not wanting to.

I had the opportunity to receive the ARC of this book & it was intense. I haven’t read a book this dark in awhile with so much possessiveness & dominance. I enjoyed the chemistry that Roman & Aurora had. The spicy scenes were EVERYTHING & SO MUCH MORE. Roman is definitely not your typical book boyfriend & more of a control everything you do, but dang the things he does in the bedroom make up for it. I mean one minute I would be pissed at Roman & then I would be drooling over his dominance in the bedroom! I couldn’t put this book down. I can’t wait for the second book to come out.

His half-brother did it better.

Oddly lacking emotion despite hero’s obsessive mechanizations. Yes he systematically closes all exit strategies and potential futures that do not lead to him but did I feel anything? No.

With his brother, his whole obsession had suspense and uncovering of the past going for it. This is just some dude who spied a girl playing on her piano one day and was like that’s the one☝🏽

4.25 stars!

Zoe Blake is the queen of dark and smutty romances and this one did not disappoint! I thought his brother was psycho, but Roman is just as deliciously sexy and twisted!

Aurora is Roman's obsession and what Roman wants, Roman gets. As soon as he set sights on her, he had a plan to make her his. He blackmailed her awful mother and stepfather and said their debts would be paid if they gave him Aurora. He wasted no time in claiming what was his.

The spice in this book is so good! Definitely recommend giving this a shot and I can't wait to see how their story plays out!
