After the Burn

Rate this book
Leilani Garrett's debut novel about a successful Black woman finding the courage to trust herself above all else is a rallying cry for modern women.

Devoted single mom and corporate badass Elle Grace Rollins is crushing it. Despite growing up "hood poor," Elle has built a rewarding life. With a teenage son, a vibrant circle of "sistah" friends, and a man she adores, Elle has it all. Or so she thought. After more than a decade with the love of her life, Darien, another woman threatens to upend their relationship. As a rift grows between them, she unexpectedly finds herself in the arms of a younger man. And as if a love triangle wasn't enough, Elle discovers a rival colleague is trying to cheat her out of a big payday. With her career at stake, Elle isn't willing to take it lying down. In a final showdown, she has one last move to make. But will she come out on top?

In After the Burn, Garrett pushes the boundaries of cultural norms, redefining what it means to be a successful woman. Drawing from her experiences as an African American woman in technology sales in corporate America, as well as her adventures as a mother, friend and lover, she contemplates what happens when we allow ourselves to consider what we want first. Written from the perspective of a Black woman, the book speaks specifically to Black women. Yet its message will resonate with women of all ages and races, teaching them that it's okay to create your own view of success in life and in love.

Local author. I sometimes see her at the nail salon and my yoga class. Had no idea she was an author until the library had a book signing. The book takes place in Evanston/Chicago and it was fun to see references to local establishments. I enjoyed hearing about the tech business world which I know nothing about. If she writes more, I would read more of hers.

From the very first page, After the Burn had me hooked. Leilani Garrett has crafted a powerful, emotionally charged debut that speaks to the complexities of love, ambition, and self-worth. As a reader, I was completely immersed in Elle Grace Rollins’ journey—her triumphs, her struggles, and the tough choices she faces when her world starts unraveling.

Elle is a woman who seemingly has it all—a thriving career, a deep sisterhood, and a man she’s loved for over a decade. But when betrayal shakes her foundation, she’s forced to question everything she thought she knew. I loved how Garrett doesn’t just give us a story about heartbreak; she gives us a woman who reclaims her power, both professionally and romantically. Watching Elle navigate a love triangle while fighting to protect her career was exhilarating, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way.

What makes After the Burn truly stand out is its raw honesty. Garrett doesn’t shy away from the realities of being a Black woman in corporate America or the expectations placed on women when it comes to love and sacrifice. Elle’s journey isn’t just about surviving—it's about thriving on her own terms. That message hit home for me.

The writing is sharp, the dialogue feels authentic, and the pacing keeps you turning the pages. But what I loved most was how this book made me think—about love, loyalty, and the courage it takes to put yourself first. After the Burn is more than just a romance; it’s an anthem for women who refuse to settle. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a story that’s empowering, passionate, and deeply relatable.
