Ava Richardson writes epic page-turning Young Adult Fantasy books. She creates lovable characters and drops them into intricate worlds that are barely contained within your eReader. Ava has written 21 YA dragon fantasy series, including her bestselling series Return of the Darkening and her recent series, Destia's Dragon Shifter War.
She grew up on a steady diet of fantasy and science fiction books handed down from her two big brothers – and despite being dog-eared and missing pages, she loved escaping into the magical worlds that those authors created. Her favorites were the ones about dragons; where they’d swoop, dive and soar through the skies of these enchanted lands.
I absolutely adore the dragon fantasy series written by this talented author. She weaves incredible tales of surprisingly strong though unlikely heroines. I think every series of hers I've read or listened to has to do with dragons in some respect, yet each world she creates is different, with different rules of magic, different peoples/creatures, and well-imagined complexity. I love this particular series. Here are my full reviews of its first 4 books.
Book 1: Bone Crown: Excellent Start to a New Series
I've read or listened to several series by this talented fantasy author and always come away impressed. This book starts a new series about a young American female who seemingly accidentally becomes involved with the goings-on of a magical realm. Soon, she meets a dragon and the fae prince trying to bond with him—so he can ascend to the throne of the High King—near her home on Earth, the man having brought the fight here to decrease the dragon's powers. The heroine doesn't really understand what's going on, of course, or what she should do. But earlier in the book, she had proven to be a strong protector, so she jumps in to defend the dragon. When the dragon’s physical body dies, it chooses to bond his spirit with hers since she had shown compassion. Then everything changes! The world the prince brings her to is certainly fascinating, richly imagined and explained. Because the dragon king’s spirit has bonded with her, by their laws, she is now the High Queen, but of course, others oppose this, directly and indirectly, some wanting to keep power for themselves, others not trusting this could be the right path. So many excellent interactions and lots of great action scenes! The book ends with the heroine and the prince trapped back on Earth after the prince, who has now become her ally, has been betrayed by someone close to him. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series to see how this story continues. If you’ve read or listened to any Ava Richardson fantasy stories, you know she always writes a quality story with excellent characters and an engaging, page-turning plot. This is no exception. Highly recommended.
Book 2: The Usurper’s Throne: Excellent Next Book in Series
This is the second book in the Charassi’s Fae Queen series, and as you might imagine, it picks up exactly where the last book left off. The evil prince from the fae world has stranded the fae queen from Texas back in her human hometown. She is stranded with the good fae prince, Corrin. Of course, they figure out their way back to the fae realm … and with a few fun new magical artifacts! Unfortunately, things have gone from bad to worse back in Charassi in just the few weeks they've been gone. While I like the main characters (and creatures!) in this book, I get a little frustrated with both the hero and heroine. While both tend to foolishly act from their noble tendencies to help others and do what they believe to be the best course of action, they always do so at great peril to themselves. Not smart! I prefer characters who act with intelligence! The heroine particularly does this almost continually. At times, I just wanted to shake her and convince her of her own worth and that to truly do the most good for the most people and creatures of her realm, she must protect herself so she can keep fighting the good fight. Hard to do the best for your friends and your people if you're no longer alive! Will the hero and heroine be able to defeat his evil queen mother? Much is at stake in this book, and the book does end on a cliffhanger. I have very much enjoyed this series so far and am looking forward to digging into the next book. One thing I love about box sets is that you don’t even have to wait to download the next book! Highly recommended.
Book 3: The Stolen Palace: Of Quests and Epic Battles
This third installment of the well-written, delightful dragon fantasy series is all about quests (one for the hero, one for the heroine) and the ultimate epic battle the heroine, hero, and their forces must wage against his evil queen mother. I appreciate how this author writes long and complex tales you don't want to stop reading or listening to! I read and listen to both long and short books, and it's so pleasant to have a book and series to really sink your teeth into, one with so many intricacies and nuances of plot, character, and world development … as well as pulse-pounding action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. While novellas are popular for writers these days, they often lack the details that make reading so satisfying and keep us coming back again and again to well-written books and the authors who know how to write them!
I was glad to see that the heroine didn't make as many bad, impulsive decisions as she did in the last book! Yes, she's very noble and puts her people and the creatures she cares about above herself, but in the prior book, she endangered herself far too often and with little thought. In her quest (a large part of the first section of the book), she explores her strengths and weaknesses and comes out stronger for it. Defeating the villain requires a profound sacrifice, but she weighs her options—even has a possible creative solution—not acting from impulsivity but from a conscious, well-thought-out choice. I love that! The magic in this particular world is fascinating—weaving together various types of energy as appropriate for what you want to happen—and I enjoyed watching the heroine continue to refine her ability to wield it.
The author does an excellent job creating the near-end climactic scenes where it truly does appear as though all is lost—or at least some—but then has it all work out in a way that makes so much sense given the world and characters she has created. This book had several such moments when it seemed like important characters were beyond the point of no return. Artifacts and those who made them are so much a part of this story; this aspect only enriched my enjoyment and deepened my understanding of this world’s magic. I played the original version of the Talisman game before the turn of the millennium, and much of this book and series reminds me of it, including the use of artifacts, spells, magic that doesn’t always work as it should, and even the dragons themselves! (It was an expansion pack.) I'm interested to see how the author shifts the focus in the next book of the series, as this book did end the entire arc about the hero’s villainous mother (and in a surprisingly thoughtful, compassionate way) at the very end. The hero and heroine are well-crafted, likable characters, and I look forward to seeing where their adventures take them next!
Book 4: The Dragon King’s Egg: Pivoting to New Problems
Book 4 in this series takes a dramatic turn away from the previous three books. The last book ended when the evil queen (mother of the hero) was vanquished in an epic battle. In this book, the hero, heroine, and their supporters are facing two challenges: first, dramatic and disastrous natural events seemingly caused by a specific celestial alignment, and secondly, dreadful portents about the dragon couple’s egg (the dragons of the high king and queen of the fae, themselves king and queen of the dragons). Is this all connected? What, precisely, does the dire prophecy for the dragon's egg mean? A band of fae wants this egg so they can keep it from hatching, hoping to prevent more evil from coming to the realm. Do they get it? Will that be the case? We're left hanging about most of these questions at the book’s end.
The hero and heroine, who'd been so well aligned in previous books, also have a more personal struggle. They’re each dealing with different problems, him with the natural phenomena while she's helping the dragons with the egg. They're spending much time apart, and when they come together, they're both feeling the pressure of what's going on and neither feels the other is being supportive. They’re often at cross-purposes, neither understanding the full situation from the other’s perspective. The dragon king and his lady are amazing in this book! They are just so sweet together and clearly care so much for their little egg that is causing so many problems (and potential problems). You could feel their devastation when they learned their child was foretold in the ancient, terrible prophecy. The author did a great job showing they're not just dragons, him a bit grumpy normally anyway, but hurting potential parents who already care about their would-be child. Very empathetic!
An excellent series by a fantastic author. Highly recommended.
I received a free digital copy of this bok, but that did not affect my review.
Absolutely outstanding read. You get all 6 books. Bone Crown, Usurper's Throne, Stolen Palace, Dragon king's egg, Heart of Realms and Ancestral Forces. Each book kept getting better and better and I could not stop listening which helped because I'm in the middle of moving. I love Ava's imagination and storytelling and highly recommend the books.
