Classic case of “Great Idea killed by Poor Writing”

The plot line had great bones, but the writing was just terrible - the author did not spin a single scene worth mentioning (I do try to include a few redeeming qualities in reviews for books I do not enjoy) I’m not even entirely sure that she tried to proof-read the text before publishing…
Names were switched in one particular scene,
Specific words were overused to the point of distraction,
There was way too much superfluous information about construction…

All of this is quite upsetting, because beneath all of this, the author had all of the elements of a nice Paranormal Romance… If she hadn’t fumbled all over the place…

Dear Crystal Dawn,
If you should ever have the opportunity to release an updated and fully edited version of this book, please let me know and I will happily re-read and re-evaluate my review. It has promise; please continue writing.
Thank you,
Shurrn

DNF about 40% in after the main character is nearly raped twice (once in a flashback, but still described in detail). Then her love interest uses sex to punish her when he's feeling jealous/possessive (including tearing her clothes off, and deliberately causing her pain during it). Add to that silly miscommunications--the two main characters are angsting about, upset because they think that the other person doesn't love them, while also thinking about how much they love the other person....but neither EVER uses their human big words to actually tell the other how they feel (even though they are married/mated at this point and having constant sex). Then dumb secrets like how she's successful and rich, but initially refuses to tell him; or him not telling her about his former girlfriend who's now his brother's girlfriend. And I'm really tired of werewolf books where their society is a misogynistic patriarchal wonderland--that notion of wolf society was debunked decades ago, writers, freaking let that go already.

This was just...wow...

There was a part that bothered me so much but I kept reading because I just wanted to finish it: “You are a spiteful and stupid woman. She has a lot more than a little money and that’s not why they want her. She is also not human anymore, she’s one of us and from a lost bloodline,”
I read all of this in a monotonous tone because that was the vibe I was getting so when I got to: “I said. She made me mad and I had said too much.” I got mad myself because I wasn’t able to pick up that he was angry. I picked up on annoyance and boredom of the conversation but not angry. Usually I can tell what the character is felling but I really couldn’t with much of this book and that took away a lot of enjoyment for me.

The basic idea of the story is good but the writing/delivery was just bad. I finished the book because I want to keep my DNF list as short as possible but this was super close to being on there.

The Forgotten Ones
By Crystal Dawn

The storyline had such awesome potential, but it just didn't work out.

I'd say it's an insta-love story, but Ariel and Blake have no chemistry. Other than lust they don't seem to have any other feelings for each other. No love or even a genuine fondness.

I don't like to dump on an author but this book was truly awful. It seems to have been written by a teenager for an English assignment and all the dialogue is so stilted..
Blake was the weakest Alpha I've ever read and frankly, he bordered on a rapist. Not an admired character trait in the so-called hero. Twice, after fighting with Ariel, he pursued her to the bedroom where he proceeded to rip off her clothing as she was pushing him away then started to have sex with her. Of course, our fair heroine, could not resist his advances and began to participate 'cause, after all, no means yes. (rolls eyes) I am so sick of these dubious consent sex scenes. A guy treats you like that, you should be wearing his testicles for earrings by morning.
What kind of Alpha has to phone his brother for advice about .. everything? This bloke seriously annoyed me. Blake's brother and a member of his brother's pack, both try to rape his mate and he doesn't do anything about it.
Then there's Ariel, she's frickin' Superwoman! Every man who sees her lusts after her. She's beautiful, she's a best selling novelist, she manages several construction crews at once, she can write an entire novel in the time it takes to fly from Missouri to Rome. Let's not forget she's a great cook and dynamite in the sack! Plus she's the much coveted 'White Wolf'.
I didn't care about any of the characters and don't get me started on the 'World Council' who think they have the right to take over people's lives even though said people don't have a clue that werewolves exist.
I learned more about renovating and buying old houses than I needed and it was still more interesting than the so-called story, which seemed incidental.
The rescue from the kidnapping was so easy that it made me wonder why it was even there.
I will not be continuing with this series and avoiding this author in the future. I'm glad this was a freebie and I now know why.

A dichotomy.

I re ember reading this book some years ago but I feel as though it has been updated. There are so many questions. There are cell phones but not smart phones. There's no connection such as Skype, Messenger or WhatsApp and people don't even call while overseas. Then there's talk of jump drives. Is this am American term for external hard drives or something else.
I must say that Ariel is a woman on steroids! How she does what she does is just about unbelievable! Blake should have the biggest inferiority complex going! On one hand I like it a lot but on the other I keep asking questions. Like Antonio! He never gets mentioned after she gets home! (Please note that I'm trying hard not to give out spoilers! Sometimes that's difficult!)
I think that her sons were really good, or a bit unreal, not to question her more.
Despite the questions I do want to read the next book and recommend it to lovers of paranormal, shifter books.

This is just a hot mess. Lots of normal, minimal para. Unnecessary POV changes. The pacing is off. Too much detail on the everyday occurrences but not enough about the were aspects. We are hurried thru the pages where the main (?) plot twist of the Forgottens comes into play. What? Why? There's honestly so much rushing thru, you question why it's even the title of the book.

The entire series was found as a Freebie read in the iBooks store.

As a note, I have started the 2nd book in the series to see if any of these issues were resolved but it's pretty much the same thing. Too many characters introduced with not enough detail building the characters, relationships and scenes. The werewolf aspect feels like a contrivance to the storyline instead of being the main focus as you would expect.

It's readable. But readable isn't equating to enjoyable.

This book has everything that could make it good. The idea of the story is good, there’s an interesting take on the typical werewolf theme, the heroin is a strong and fierce woman. The writing style, however, put me completely off. It was so passive, had a feel of “this happened and then that happened and he said this and then she said this”. As if the things aren’t happening to the characters, but are rather observed from a distance. At one point, something bad happened to the main character and I felt zero emotion for/from her. It was just flat. If someone would rewrite this, make it more active and make you feel more involved with the characters, I think it really could be a great story to read. And that’s the only reason I’m rating this 2 stars instead of 1...

This werewolf tale is a one-star dog!!!

I don't give a lot of one-star ratings, but that is the one that fits for The Forgotten Ones. The basic plot could have been a good story. The heroine, Ariel, was obnoxiously too alpha, and Blake, the hero and supposed pack leader, let her run all over him and everyone else. There was no chemistry between them, and the sex scenes were hurried and mechanical (or maybe I just hurried through them trying to get through since nothing was engaging). Please do yourself a favor and skip this one.

I think the concept of the story line is great but the writing needs some serious changes. Although I would like to know how the story works out I won't read the other books. There are so many details left out - like the fights, people want to know what happens during a fight - not just saying that there was a fight and this side won. We want to read about who hits who and how it was dealt with or who might pull a knife or weapon and how that was dealt with. The whole book needs details. You hold a readers attention with details. We want to feel like we are there - we want to make a personal connection to the characters. We want to feel their fear, their thoughts, their love, their hate - their FEELINGS, plans, hopes and dreams in detail!

This one started kind of slow and seemed basic wasn't sure I was going to be able to read it but then the story line got more interesting ( I tend to be impatient for the good stuff) and I wanted to know what was going to happen. I kind of love and hate that nothing bad ever really happens because who really wants people to endure horrible things but then some times those horrible things define the characters so I kind of felt like some of the characters could have been sooooo much more if there was just a touch more information a touch more happening etc. Over all I enjoyed this story line and the fact the series isn't all about sex

It was good

I don't like books that leave you hanging. I like them to be able to fully stand on their own. And even though I normally hate books that have the characters in the first person, she pulled this one off. There was something missing about it, but I can't put my finger on it. She had some really good adversity going on in serval parts of the plot, and I give her kiddos for them! Not many can pull that off . Good start. I might read another one. I just don't know because of the ending to this. But good job on your first (?) Book.

White Wolf

I enjoyed this book more than most of this nature. I read quite a bit for the ability to just get lost in and collect my thoughts. There are usually steamy sec scenes that I skip thru. I appreciate one I don't. Like this one. They are there they just let our minds fill in the details. It was great. I enjoyed the storyline and it kept me fairly entertained. I felt like it was a bit to much lead in for books to come and not quite enough on the now. Still found very good. I love white wolves and love stories about them. Thank you

Give it a chance

When I first started this book, I was thinking I probably would not finish it. The writing was very stilted and almost juvenile. In some ways, that continues throughout the book. Having said that, I could see potential in the story line and it slowly began to improve. Really it should be a 3 star rating because the characters are somewhat emotionally dead. But the story has great potential if author gets it together.

what a great read

This was a really great read and I am looking forward to continue this series…
It is fast paced steering between drama, romance, legend among other things.
I seriously could not put it down….
I enjoyed the fact that it was not too graphic in the bedroom, but it definitely had some very steamy scenes throughout….
I love the storyline and the characters….
Just a really great book…

Great read

Sooo awesome! This book starts the series off with a bang. Getting to know Ariel and Blake along with the pack and Ariel's family really makes you invested in what happens to them. This is a whole new world and makes you very impatient to read the other books in this series. I would recommend this story to any adult interested in sexy shifter stories.

Become a chracter

This story is amazing! I read tons of were novels, this one had me up all night. The characters are so believable, I want to become one. This is not your average romance, there is action and drama. Did I mention I want to be a character? Can't wait to get my hands on all the series.

Loving the White Wolf

Blake, a black alpha wolf, takes one look at Alexi, a human and falls in love. It turns out that Alexi's ancestors were white wolves. Blake bites Alexi when they make love and she bites him back. The plot is well written, the various characters are interesting, and I plan on purchasing the next in this series.

The Forgotten Ones

This book is about a paranormal writer, named Ariel, her two adult sons, Matt and Danny, and a sexy alpha mate named Blake. The white wolf is very rare and when Ariel gets mated to Blake, her white wolf emerges. Danger, abductions, stress, hard work, secrets, and sexy scenes will keep you riveted. I loved this book.

A very nice shifter story.

I liked the story and the characters. I can not say it is a HEA because the story continues or at least was not finished in this book. I guess it is an HE beginning. It did seem to run a little long but it is a good story and I would like to see where it goes.

More action

Needed more action and less of a buildup and this story needs more action from BLake to protect his mate, he should never let her go alone as a true ALpha that loves his true mate. After all the trouble he lets her go into a bar by herself without checking the bar out first where was her protection?

A page turner

Hard to put down. Slightly different to other werewolf books I have read which made it more enjoyable. More story line than sexual description. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Loved it.

Blake saw her in the bar. He asked her out and she agreed to go with him. It was love at first sight.
Has lots of world building and character building. Liked it so much I had to know what happened next so I bought all the rest of the series.

Started off..

...stiff, more of plot outline. Loved premise and was soon drawn in and eventually the writing became smoother.
LOVeD heroine, hero but thought some of situations were ridiculous.
No way once he knew who adducted her would they be alive.

New take on paranormal

This book was a great read with new and interesting aspects that I haven't read before. The author does a great job melding everything together. It was nice to read a book separate from the norm, and a good length too.

When the White Wolf Comes Again

I remember reading this book a long time ago, so reading it again was enjoyable. It's the start of a great series about wolf shifters and the return of the white wolf. If you like shifter romances with lots of action, this one's for you.
