To say I am obsessed is an understatement! This has everything new and seasoned fantasy readers will enjoyed — lush landscapes, interesting magic, an underlining mystery, and meddling gods. I do not judge a book by its cover (although this one IS gorgeous) but I DO judge a book based on its opening line and this one did not disappoint!
“It was a shame that Eldric Lorecaster must die. Though he was a crook and a thief, his greatest crime was getting caught.”
Come on???? Tell me you don’t want to read this immediately! The writing is phenomenal, the story perfectly paced, and I cannot believe this is a debut novel. I need more in this world and I need it right now! Please pick up this book, binge it, and then message me so we can discuss!
Read this book if you like: -cozy fantasies -found family -cottage core vibes -forced proximity -marriage of convenience
To the Gallows is OUT NOW and if it's not already on your tbr, it should be! . . . Special thanks to the author for sharing a free copy with me in exchange for my honest opinions.
To the Gallows is a fantasy romance about a rogue who got stealing from the rich to give to the needy and is sentenced to death, but then cleric reading his last rites decided to marry him to save his life! They are now bound by the gods and if death comes to one, jt comes to both. A marriage of convenience turns into a blooming romance.
Lorali and Eldric are definitely two sides of the same coin. Completely opposite and yet they are both just doing what they think is morally good in life. Both have their flaws but as they are together they are able to have better understandings.
I love the mental health representation in this book. Not only does it make the characters more relatable but also more believable in the best ways. I think the subjects are handled really delicately.
This is a pretty quick read (less than 300 pages) but nothing seemed rushed. Definitely plenty of world building and background stories to make it not feel too short.
The descriptions of everything felt like a breath of fresh air. I felt like I was in the kitchen while food is being cooked and in the gardens while tending to their plants. I loved the relaxing environments.
Overall I feel like this was the perfect book to end my summer reading list. It was lighthearted while still dealing with some heavy topics. It was beautifully near lyrically written. A marriage of convenience for one that ended up saving them both. What more could you want!
Tropes: Marriage of convenience Forced proximity Cottagecore Magic He Fell First Strangers to friends to lovers slow burn
To the Gallows is a cozy fantasy with cottagecore and magic vibes. The FMC is Lorali, a high cleric of the Order, who worships a goddess. One of Lorali's duties is to attend hangings at the gallows and give last rites to those condemned. There, she meets criminal Eldric, and feeling a god calling her to save his life, she enacts the Gallows Marriage- tying their lives together in marriage for 1 year. At the end of the year, if Eldric hasn't reformed his ways, they both forfeit their lives to the gallows.
I really liked this story. I found Eldric to be cinnamon roll MMC. Is he a criminal? Yes by the current power's rules by he's a Robin Hood of sorts. Doing his best to the people of their village, rather than for the powers that be. He also cooks, what's not to love there?! But really, he shows Lorali that there's more to life than just living in a temple (in a good way) and I really liked him.
Lorali struggles between wanting to be something other than a cleric, which she's be trained to do since the age of 9, and her duties as a cleric. It's an internal tug of war. I liked her but I wanted to see her embrace Eldric more lol. Also, we learn about her past and I did want more information on that situation that I felt we got.
Overall, I think if you enjoy clean fantasy, check this one out!
Grab your favorite cup of tea, your favorite pastries, cuddle up by a fire and enjoy the coziest read of the year!!
I loved, loved, loved this book. It was such a quick and easy read, but did not lack any big feelings or story lines. This story was filled with wonderful lessons, hope, and devotion.
Lorali was such a sweet and comforting character. Her anxieties were relatable and made her feel so real. She was quirky, funny and so unbelievably herself. Her realizing she could rely on Eldric, and how she always gave, but never actually received the help/care she gave out🫠 made me seriously tear up. Lorali is the sweetest🥹 Eldric was such a funny MMC to me. He was handsome, witty, and so so so loyal. Plus I just love a man who can cook. And bow takes care of Lorali:’) he does all the ‘little things’ you hope your partner does. As soon as he made sure to grab her favorite mug, so she didn’t forget it, I just KNEWWWWW. Their building relationship- from friends, to their comfort/home to a healthy and happy marriage was such a heartwarming journey. The banter between them, LOVED. Again, every aspect of the story is just SO cozy including their love story. There is no spice in this book, but who needs it when the book is this enjoyable??? A VERY special shoutout to Athanasios and Heinrich, I loved these side characters. For 2 very different reasons (obviously😂)
This story has all the cozy, comfort you want heading into the autumn season. There’s tea, fireplaces, a cottage, a little magical town, delicious, savory food, beautiful gardens, and an understated love story. Even though this story is a short, cozy one, the love, acts of devotion, and loyalty will make your heart so happy. This story also explores what makes someone morally good. The governing bodies that tell you they’re looking out for you, or a thief that steals for the hungry and poor? Can your dreams and ambitions change? Have you been looking for change in the wrong places? Have you truly been making the world a better place? This story takes you through it all. The ending gave me such bittersweet, melancholy, hopeful vibes all wrapped up in one beautiful epilogue. I seriously can’t recommend this story enough.
Thanks so much for this arc! I’m so happy I got to read this one🥹🫶🏼
To the Gallows by Elizabeth Skarpnes is such a beautiful story of dealing with grief, believing in yourself, and learning that you don't have to be alone. The anxiety and ADHD representation in this book was beautifully done! My struggles felt seen in this book. This book has given me inspiration. I feel like a lot of times where people in books go through something tramatic it's just glossed over. This book shows us the characters years after they have gone through the tramatic events, and even very shortly after. Aside from the mental health representation in this book, the other thing I loved the most was the main characters learning to open up their hearts and let each other in. I relate to Lorali, in the fact that she's stubborn, works to avoid her problems, and always gives without receiving. I have struggled with all of those most of my life, and up until i got married to my wonderful husband did I start to realize that I was wearing myself down. Lorali's growth through out the book was so beautiful to watch. She is so strong, and by the end of the book she is not afraid to go against all she has known her whole life. This book is a no spice fantasy, but that doesn't mean there isn't romance in it. You don't need spice to make a book good, and Elizabeth has proven this. She created a beautiful love story with all of the feels, and banter, minus the explicit stuff. If you are thinking oh this is going to just a cozy read, well you wouldn't be entirely wrong. Be warned of the plot twists that was have you gasping! Also big shoutout to Athanasios 👀👀 (for what?? you have to read the book to find out 😏)
This was so good! So if you enjoy romantasy, hear me out, and don’t sleep on this novel.
To the Gallows is a standalone cozy romantasy that has everything you could wish for: an intriguing magic system, a sweet blooming romance, a powerful female lead, and a whimsical cottagecore setting.
The plot remains engaging while being character-driven and low-stakes, with nothing to envy from other romantasy novels. The writing is amazing, and the story is full of positive messages. It’s written in the third person, with a dual POV. I loved how both Lorali and Eldric were portrayed. They really give off Flynn and Rapunzel vibes. This could have been much longer, and I would have happily spent nights reading it.
Moreover, the novel includes queer and neurodivergent representation. It’s my first time reading a book with an ADHD character, and the cozy genre is a great fit for portraying the everyday struggles of people with ADHD.
This definitely won’t be the last book by Elizabeth Skarpnes I’ll read.
A heart warming story. I loved the characters and how well written this novel was. Lorali and Eldric slow burn love story made me think of when I met my husband, two opposite coming together. The way they look out for each other with little to nothing. Pretending not to care about each other, how fearless she becomes throughout the book and how much Eldric changed because of her. Their scape scene was impressive.
Definitely a 5 star ⭐️ read.
I look forward to reading more of Elizabeth Skarpnes.
To The Gallows is one of the cutest cozy romantasy quick reads i’ve read all year! Tangled vibes? Yes please! Forced proximity? give me more!
All in all I did enjoy reading this one! I thought the characters were just cuties together! It was a pretty quick read but I felt like the story progressed well and I don’t feel like I missed out on anything! Both characters were totally different but alike in the same way morally which was a nice change from other reads! I’m such a sucker for witty banter, Lorali and Eldric had me twirling my hair, kicking my feet while reading!
The perfect cozy fantasy romance to start off autumn!! 🍂☕️✨
I was immediately drawn to this book when I saw the cover and read the synopsis, and I’m so happy to say that it lived up to my own hype!
To the Gallows is about Lorali Wynmar, High Cleric of the order of Ostara. She is present at the execution of famous thief (think Robin Hood), Eldric Lorecaster, to perform his last rights. He chooses to receive the blessing of the god of chaos, Athanasios. And from there, thrust into chaos they are.
In order to save Eldric’s life, Lorali invokes the rite of a gallows marriage, an all but forgotten request. Now, Eldric has a year to prove he’s reformed and they are bound together more closely than even they realized.
There are so many things I loved about this book!! I loved the cozy atmosphere and found family aspects. The forced proximity to friends to something more pipeline was so well done! And this may be a cozy fantasy romance, but there was also a very compelling story following the religion and politics of the kingdom that I was very intrigued by. I thought I would love this book and I am blown away by how much I did!
What an amazing debut from Elizabeth Skarpnes! The writing in this book was also top tier, in my opinion. I will definitely be eagerly awaiting more books from this author! If any of this piques your interest, please check out To the Gallows! It’s available now on KU!
Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC. This is my honest review. 🫶🏻✨
“She was strong enough to listen to the fear and channel it into something new.”
What an incredible novel! Comforting, whimsical, and playful while also deeply healing. It’s been a while since a book has encouraged me like this one has. The most cozy story that spoke to my soul and told me that I am strong.
I loved Lorelei. She was such a lovable and relatable character. As someone with ADHD and anxiety I LOVED having a character who displayed those struggles while also being badass and successful. I loved the duality of her incredible power and success, while she was also someone who forgot her coffee mug and loved to garden.
Eldric was the wholesome MMC that I have been searching for. Loving, kind, and supportive - while also being willing to do what it will take to make the world a better place. In a world of morally grey MMC Eldric was a breath of fresh air. Also, I can't help but love a man who cooks for you.
The themes of growing and changing are wonderful. It’s ok if your dreams and goals in life change over time. Lorelei and Eldric being changed by their love for each other was a heartwarming tale. A perfect comforting book for snuggling up with a cozy blanket and a mug of tea.
Well done, Elizabeth! I eagerly look forward to your next book :)
“It’s this or death. I assume you prefer the former.”
i loved loved loved this book. it was the perfect cozy and phenomenal read i needed. i will never get over lorali + eldric 😭 the world building, the vibes, the found family + the romance was EVERYTHINGGGGGG. i can never pass up a heckin marriage of convenience and this was one so unique 👀
3.5 stars! I ate this up, Lorali and Eldric were SO cute and I loved them. I haven’t read much cozy fantasy, and this book truly does feel like a warm hug.
That said, I don’t feel like this book met its true potential. I loved the premise, I loved the characters, but I feel like there was a lot that could have been fleshed out more. Like I enjoyed the book, but I needed more of it. I wish we had more world building and more information about this world’s history, the magic system, some of the characters’ backstories. With all of these things I feel like the book just barely scratched the surface and I was left with more questions than answers. Despite my criticisms, this book was addicting and I think this author has the potential to be something special.
Lovely, sweet, and heartwarming in every way, “To the Gallows” is the gentle cottagecore romantasy you need to soften the cockles of your heart. Not to mention it’s perfect for the changing of the season! If you’re looking for something easy to read but well written, this novel should be next on your list!
From the first chapter, I fell in love with everything about this book. The setting, the story, the characters, the writing. I read it in one day, literally laughing and crying over this book while I did. If you’re looking for the perfect book to end summer and start the fall season with, this cozy romantic fantasy is it. It’s one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, and one I know I’ll read again and recommend often.
This book is more IDIOT PLOT than it is cozy. Shouldn't have trusted all these positive reviews. Instead of the warm and cozy feelings that the positive reviews promised me, all I got was a whole lot of exasperation. I was struggling to get myself through the last 10% of the book. Highly NOT recommended.

Oh, how this novel will stay with me!
Skarpnes weaves words into true magic, as she has successfully created a timeless tale of love worthy of each and every one of its tropes. Perfect for the season, I honestly loved everything about this “cozy romantasy”.
I loved the richness of her scenes and setting - I felt I was right alongside both Lorali and Eldric, whether they were dining on meals Eldric made (“while the sun warmed her body, a creamy soup of potatoes and leeks warmed her soul, fresh baked rosemary bread making for the perfect spoon”), or traversing to/from town and the “warren that was the temple.” I loved the depth Skarpnes gave to each character, how she made the main characters so relatable, and their dialogue - the banter AND the tender moments.
And I loved the overall pace of the novel and all the additional information Skarpnes has provided her readers, from the pronunciation guide and character profiles to the music playlists and story recipes! I truly cannot wait to read their next chapter!

Where do I even begin with my love for this book. 🥹
Elizabeth Skarpnes truly made a fantasy world that is so beautiful, healing, and charming. I enjoyed reading every aspect, moment and page of this story. It was truly a 5 star ⭐️ reading experience.
I loved Lorali, our FMC, with every fiber of my being. She has a heart of gold, with so much empathy and compassion that it immediately makes you want to be a better person over a fictional character. She is witty and strong. I loved getting to know her and seeing her navigate through her inner trauma. It was a healing journey that impacted me in numerous ways.
I was captivated by the cottage-core vibes that this world gives. This book was truly a heartwarming read and I couldn’t get enough from each page. Skarpnes will now be an auto-buy author for me. I am amazed by the quality of writing and how she immediately immersed me into the world of Athera.
And don’t even get me started on Eldric - immediately swooning. I loved his development and how much he cared for and loved Lorali. The way he avoided it initially but then came to realization simply made my heart melt. And the fact that he cooks for her to ensure she eats well. Swooning, again!! I truly love these characters so much and will be thinking about them for weeks to come.
This book is perfect for anyone looking for a cozy romantasy. There is no spice, but it wasn’t needed or missed whatsoever. The book was spectacular without it. It was a nice change of pace from my typical reads and I truly enjoyed each moment of this reading experience. I cannot recommend this book enough. 🤍✨
Special thank you to Elizabeth for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book. I cannot wait to add a physical copy to my shelves.
This offers a cozy fantasy with romance, adventure, and a touch of darkness. When Lorali, a high cleric, steps in to save condemned criminal Eldric by invoking a rare "gallows marriage," she sets off a yearlong bond that binds the two together. SUCH an incredible setup. Living together and learning to trust each other, Lorali and Eldric navigate not only their shared fate but also the shadows of their pasts as their tentative friendship grows into something more.
This book captures that rare balance in cozy fantasy where the world feels truly immersive without becoming incredibly heavy. The dynamic between Lorali and Eldric is engaging, and their growing bond is heartwarming. Watching them navigate the vulnerabilities of their newfound connection is satisfying, and Skarpnes does a wonderful job with character-driven storytelling.
Skarpnes delivers just the right amount of world-building for a cozy read, offering enough detail to keep the setting vivid without sacrificing the book’s light, comforting tone. Side characters add warmth and humor, and the overall plot, though not overly complex, serves as a lovely, feel-good escape that resonates with fans of character-driven, romantic fantasy. This is the kind of book you want to curl up with on a cozy afternoon, with just enough magic, wit, and charm to make you wish there was more to explore!
Thank you so much to Hidden Hollow Booktours and the author for the complimentary review. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
the way this was the coziest little romantasy had me snuggled up and smiling everytime i opened it up.
there is absolutely no way this book has been out for a year and i have never heard about it once. by pure chance i got to meet the author of this when i was at the bookstore and she has definitely lived up to her hype.
the way i was worried about heinrich from his first appearance to absolutely loving him was a bit of a shock to me. my trust issues for side characters are crazy.
he had never been a man of faith, but to him she was divine, and he would spend the rest of his life worshiping and believing in only her. it was sacrilege and salvation all at once.
he wanted to know her, know her soul, he wanted to unravel her and entangle himself in the existence that was lorali wynmar.
“i would wait lifetimes for you, lorali.”
she knew he would rearrange the stars and their paths just to make it happen.
♡ eldric and lorali were made for each other ♡ i love them
i ate this book up, it took me a minute to get through cause i was annotating but i’m quite happy with how it turned out now.
I stumbled upon this book on Tiktok and was immediately downloading it and making it one of my next reads. Let me tell you it did not disappoint. A sassy and determined female lead (Lorali), and a male lead (Eldric) who is a Robin hood with a heart of gold. This was a book that easily could've been 2 or 3 books if more details were given and time spent building angst between the FMC and MMC. However, I am so glad this wasn't another series. I really enjoyed how quick I was able to read through this book. I enjoyed the world it is set in, and the characters. Giving enough detail without over explaining everything, which is difficult in a shorter novel within a fantasy genre. There were twists in this story, secrets uncovered, that i just didn't see coming and I was so excited when they were revealed.
I definitely recommend this if you're tired of ready long fantasy series and was a cozy fantasy romance that is a one book and done, with a HEA! Although a little unconventional HEA.
Favorite Quote: "What an exciting day for you—got yourself a husband and a promotion.”
• Marriage of Convenience • Cottagecore • Forced Proximity • He Falls First
This was suchhhh a good book! I finished this in a few hours. I couldn't stop reading.
Lorali is so selfless and devoted and such a good FMC. She's relatable, she's strong, she's vulnerable. I just loved her so much.
Eldric oh my goodness. He got added to my book boyfriends list so fast. The way he took care of Lorali every step of the way. How he protected her. Ughhhh he's amazing.
When he said: "With every breath, you are safe With every heartbeat, you are strong. With every moment, you are loved.” My heart melted!
The ending was okay. Kind of lackluster but I throughly enjoyed the book on a whole!!
To the Gallows is a quite the charming read. A ‘marriage for convenience’, cozy fantasy romance that’s perfectly suited to read curled up with a blanket. Lorali, a cleric, is a very sweet and compassionate protagonist. Eldric, a thief who steals from the rich and gives to the poor, is a charming rogue who comes to steal your heart. The setting is magical, our leads are comforting, and the way it’s all written in flowery prose is very beautiful. You could finish this in an afternoon or two and leave satisfied.
Came across this one in my insta feed and thought maybe it would help me get out of a reading slump and get back to my ARCs. Which in many ways it did until I set my kindle aside at 80% read and didn’t pick it up again. But that is not this books fault!
This was fun read, more about the development of Lorali and Eldric’s relationship after they were brought together. No spice but proper tension and interesting storyline/magic system.
If you need a palate cleanser or just a low risk read to cleanse your mind, give this one a go!
The third act was by far the best part, but it felt like we'd spent too much time on the romance, which I wasn't invested in, rather than building a solid magic system and adding a little more complexity to the intrigue that was going on. Because we had wasted time on flatbreads and friendship bracelets, the ending felt really rushed and came across as a deus ex machina solution rather than anything that had been developed throughout the story.
I was glad to see the magic came back toward the end, but the first two thirds read like a contemporary romance with fantasy as window dressing rather than something integral to the plot. In some ways, it felt like reading two different books, which made this a just okay experience for me.
If you're looking for a cozy fantasy with an intriguing plot that keeps you from wanting to put your book down- this is IT. This was so well done- I devoured it in less than 24 hours. The elements and world building of this fantasy is so easy to follow and charms you with compelling, likeable characters.
Reading this, I couldn't help but see this in my head as an anime. The way this was written and the flow of the words just moved that way for me and it was that enjoyable. Lorali is a dutiful high cleric for the goddess Ostara who studies daily at the temple. Eldric is a thief that would have been hung had it not been for the day she was working in that service to give what is like the euivalent of the last Rights. When he's asked to pick any god to pray to, Eldric chooses Athanasios, the lord of the Underworld. This then begins the tie that leads them down a journey to a secret that they have yet to realize they're deeply a part of.
Loads of witty banter, compromises, and learning that things from the past weren’t always what they seemed at the time. So much character development happened from the moment these two began their journey and it was one of the most entertaining I’ve ever read. Their daily interactions from serious to casual were so natural. Even the side characters were so fluid. Plenty of drama and suspense in this, but if you’re looking for spice, that’s the only thing you’ll be disappointed in. Trust me, though, you won’t miss it. The whole story doesn’t need that to keep you interested in what’s going on. This is a cozy cottage core romance I could not put down.
