The Goa Gambit is set in the glamorous world of the casinos of Goa, where powerful politicians, famous celebrities, the ordinarily rich, even the hoi polloi with money to lose, and those with dreams of just making a fast buck all gather to play. There is glamour and high stakes and underlying menace in this fast-paced thriller, where a single roll of dice could win you an unimaginable fortune and a small misstep could cost you your life.
Anurag was born to tell stories. You know the kind of person who right from childhood is the life of the party, whom everyone gathers around because they have an uncanny ability to make the most mundane aspects of day to day life seem incredibly interesting and funny. That was always Anurag. Starting out with his own considerable life experiences, he soon also began to borrow liberally from the tales of friends and family, adding to each his inimitable twist to make it his own. And when finally, even that didn't seem enough, he did what all great storytellers do - he unabashedly mined the inner reaches of his imagination where fact mingles with fiction, and where it is difficult to tell what is real and what is make-believe.
At 35, he decided to give up his cushy job at a boutique investment bank and take the plunge into the world of writing. What has emerged is a deadly cocktail of fact and fiction, narrated in his unique style taking you on an entertaining journey.
The Indian Express opined about his writing:
“The writing is wry without being smug, the characters and their badinage engaging without getting stilted, and as for the plot, well, let’s leave it at Tripathi who gets the ingredients of a desi potboiler just right!”
Kalayug, his debut novel was nominated for the Raymond Crossword Book Awards 2017. Dalal’s Street, his second, is a fictionalised no-holds-barred account of what goes on behind the scenes in the financial advisory business in India.
Anurag is a foodie and suffers from a severe case of wanderlust. In the evening, he can be found at one of the many bars that grace the city of Singapore, chatting up strangers for inspiration or talking to his glass of whiskey when there is no one else round to listen.
"In the casino of life, every choice is a gamble, and the stakes are always high."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Jayesh Shah is a self-made man whose rags to riches story is almost inspiring. But behind the scenes, a great scandalous charisma drapes over the Czar of Indian gambling scene where he has to defend his status from those he thought were his partners and allies. The charisma that this book holds is something entirely maddening. The book has it all: the drama, the tragedy and the treachery. The book took me deeper into the world of gambling and how 'fair' the scene actually is, to both its patrons and its kings. But the thing that makes this book distinct is how it goes around the themes of the human psyche. Jayesh, a man who has seen it all seems to have developed a twisted definition of success and finds himself at turmoil because of it, as his definition begins and ends with wealth. Anton, who grew up in a broken home feels at a position of authority when he does not have to pull his punches. The characters show promise, with their arcs making sense as the story nears its end. Other than that, gambling is a character in itself, making and destroying lives in a breath's duration. The book has a rather decent plot, with less leaning towards the thrill side of it, and more focus on the drama, a choice that made sense to me. The book is a memorable journey of how seemingly small decisions are nothing less than a gamble can change lives.
If you're craving a thrilling read packed with glitz, clever maneuvers, and a hint of psychological depth, I highly recommend this book. It's a roller-coaster of intrigue and excitement that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Perfect for anyone who loves drama and strategy intertwined with insightful character exploration.
Set in the thrilling casinos of Goa, The Goa Gambit is a fast-paced adventure featuring a mix of ambitious politicians and scandalous celebrities. The story is full of twists and turns, as each character tries to outwit the others in this glamorous, dangerous world.

These are universal concepts that everyone can connect to, particularly those who are enticed by the temptation of success. It is interesting and thought-provoking since it delves deeply into the effects of pursuing wealth and power.
I was captivated by the rapid-fire drama and finished reading the novel in one sitting. The tension, drama, and striking passages in this book kept me thinking it would make a fantastic film as I read it.

What do you need to make a bestselling thriller? A puppet, his puppet master, a glamorous world, a few characters, a lot of backstabbing and a lot more chaos.
“Politics aur dhande ke maamle me koi kisi ka saga nahi hota.”
The Goa Gambit is a fast-paced thriller set in Goa. Jayesh is famous for his rags to riches and now owns a casino. But the world doesn’t know that he is merely a puppet in a much bigger game.
A lost celebrity, a lover forgotten, a Thai woman with a not-so-Thai name, a powerful man, a timid jack dealer, a woman sniffing all corners for stink, a successor waiting for his turn, all under one roof for the inauguration of a casino for a night of gambling, what could go wrong in this scenario? Everything.
“I have no option but to play his dirty game. I have a horrible feeling that this evening will not end well.”
This story seemed straight out of a movie. There was this web of characters and the suspense narration that kept me hooked till the end. Smartly played, Mr. Tripathi.
To anyone who says thriller books by Indian authors are not “quality” enough, I will politely (not so politely) thrust this book into their hands.
The Goa Gambit, by Anurag Tripathi is a captivating thriller that thrusts readers into the dazzling yet dangerous world of Goa's high-stakes casinos. From the very beginning, the story grips you with its unyielding pace, where power plays and deceit are intricately woven into every turn. Tripathi masterfully crafts unforgettable character Jayesh, the shrewd brain, with dynamics keeping the plot thrillingly unpredictable has kept me tangled around. Beyond the glitter of wealth and gambling, this novel delves into the complexities of human ambition and desire, exploring the extremes people will go to for power. The casino setting serves as a profound metaphor for the risks and rewards of life, making this story as much a psychological exploration as it is a thrilling adventure. For those seeking an exhilarating, fast-paced read that challenges both the mind and the emotions.
🙋🏻♀️The Goa Gambit was an interesting thriller, a total page turner, a total entertainer, can be easily devored in a single sitting & the end is totally worth it!
The front & back covers are appealing, very well designed w.r.t. the story, with emphasis given on minute detailing for design, throughout the book too. The genuinity chrome logo at the back cover of Niyogi books, is something we readers value & appreciate. Another thing which i noted is, this book has no page numbers.
The book is divided into 3 parts and the chapter titles are witty & curiousity initiators. Jayesh Shah was a very interesting character. He studied people, their body language, their behaviour very closely & did a precise psychological analysis of them which he used to get his work done, from them, effortlessly. He was my favourite in this story. Ruby was an interesting character too. All said and done, with the ups and downs, life goes on and waits for noone. The story beautifully depicted, how this world is a stage and the characters are merely actors, enacting their parts to complete the picture. I definitely recommend it as a one time read, a complete entertainment package with simple vocabulary & engaging writing style. A perfect thriller for beginner readers, especially.

Set in the vibrant yet perilous casinos of Goa, The Goa Gambit is a fast-paced thriller that follows a diverse cast of characters—from power-hungry politicians to scandal-ridden celebrities—all converging in Goa’s glamorous world of high-stakes gambling. The plot is rich with intrigue, danger, and surprising twists, as each character seeks to outmaneuver the others in a world where nothing is as it seems. It’s a high-octane ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering who will come out on top.
Anurag Tripathi is no stranger to high stakes. With a background in investment banking and a penchant for storytelling, he brings a unique perspective to his writing. His debut novel was nominated for the Raymond Crossword Book Awards in 2017, establishing him as a credible voice in Indian fiction. Now, with The Goa Gambit, Tripathi dives into the chaotic world of Goa’s casinos, drawing on his keen observation of people and his extensive life experiences to craft a narrative that’s both thrilling and thought-provoking.
What makes The Goa Gambit stand out is its deep dive into the human psyche. Tripathi doesn’t just tell a story about gambling; he uses the casino as a metaphor for life’s unpredictability and the moral choices we make in the pursuit of success. The characters are complex, each bringing their unique motivations and flaws to the table. This is not just a thriller—it’s a reflection on ambition, greed, and the thin line between right and wrong.
From the morally complex protagonist to the power-driven antagonists, the characters in The Goa Gambit are all too human, making choices that many of us can relate to, even if we’d rather not admit it. The themes of ambition, power, and the corrupting influence of money are universal, resonating with anyone who has ever been tempted by the lure of success.
There’s a moment in the book where a character’s entire life hinges on a single roll of the dice. It’s a heart-stopping scene that perfectly encapsulates the tension and high stakes that define the book. This scene, in particular, stayed with me long after I’d turned the last page—a reminder of how close success and failure often are.
Tripathi’s strengths lie in his ability to create a vivid, immersive world filled with well-developed characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. However, the pacing does falter slightly in the middle, which may test the patience of some readers. But if you stick with it, the payoff is well worth it.
The Goa Gambit is more than just a thriller—it’s a meditation on the risks we take in life and the moral costs of ambition. One quote that stuck with me was, “In the casino of life, every choice is a gamble, and the stakes are always high.” It’s a line that encapsulates the book’s central theme and one that I find myself reflecting on even now.

Anurag Tripathi’s short story “The Goa Gambit” takes the reader into Goan casina life. With Jayesh Shah at the center of the story—a man who rose from humble beginnings to become a gambling czar—the novel promises to offer a fast-paced, gripping tale of wealth, power, and betrayal. While the book succeeds in keeping readers entertained, it falls short in certain areas, particularly with regard to pacing and emotional depth.
Set in the vibrant and high-stakes environment of Goa's casinos, the book follows Jayesh Shah, a self-made gambling tycoon. When Jayesh plans to inaugurate a new casino, he gets involved in a mud of corruption, betrayals and power plans. The idea of the book lies in depicting distinct aspects of the characters’ vices including the main characters’ quests and revealing to the readers the political aspect of the power struggle within the casino business.
The plot begins at a breakneck pace, introducing a wide range of characters, which are wicked politician Pankaj Adhikari, ex-girlfriend who bear a grudge, Jill, and the double-crossing former ally Anton. All of these characters are basically motivated by their own greed and, thus, their actions and ultimate plans are far from being predictable. However, while the early parts of the book are exciting, the middle section suffers from a noticeable lull as the story gets bogged down with exposition and predictable plot developments.
The subplots are alluring, but are not explored or exploited to the hilt in the book. The exploration of the moral dilemmas faced by the characters is often surface-level, leaving readers wishing for more introspective moments that could have added emotional depth to the story. The book misses an opportunity to offer a more profound commentary on the cost of ambition and the human condition, relying instead on its plot twists to drive the narrative forward.
The pacing of the book is uneven. The initial chapters of the book can be called bright: the author do not take long to plunge the readers into the atmosphere of high-stakes extravaganza of Goa’s casinos and present the reader with a set of intriguing characters. This creates agility in the action and strong conditions which make the readers interested. Unfortunately, this is best described as middle section of the book loses a lot of steam as the plot drags, with multiple side characters and story arcs that just don’t do a lot for the overall narrative. This drop in pace makes the novel feel unnecessarily drawn out, and while the ending picks up again with a satisfying conclusion, the sag in the middle detracts from the overall experience.
In conclusion, it is an entertaining thriller that offers readers a glimpse into the dangerous, glamorous world of Goa’s casinos. It has strong character profile, especially the main character, Jayesh Shah and a fast-paced plot filled with intrigue and betrayal. However, it deviates from its even pace, cannot develop its themes enough, and sticks to clichéd tropes more often than not, so the book cannot experience full potential. While the book is a fun and engaging read, it leaves readers wanting more in terms of emotional depth and philosophical exploration.
For those who like character-based books with plenty of action, it is worth picking up. Of course, the seekers of deeper emotional revelations or philosophical contemplation will not find it very rich in that sense. All in all, it is a solid entry in the thriller genre, but it falls short of being truly memorable.
"The Goa Gambit" is an exciting exploration of the high-stakes world of opulent casinos, frenetic gaming, and suspenseful moments that leave you breathless.
Jayesh Shah, a self-made billionaire in the gambling business, is the main character of the novel. He unexpectedly finds himself entangled in a perilous web of conspiracy and dishonesty.
The story follows him as he makes his way through this dangerous scenario, where every choice he makes forces him further into a dangerous game where the consequences could be fatal.
The casino culture of Goa is vividly and mysteriously brought to life by the author.
Readers are taken to the busy casino floors, the opulent but hollow luxury, and the underlying currents of betrayal and danger that run just beneath the surface through detailed and evocative descriptions. This rich environment shapes and influences the events that take place, acting as more than just a background.
It becomes almost hard to foresee the ending as the tension increases gradually with each chapter that unveils new levels of complexity and danger. Each of the well-developed characters has a significant part to play in the drama that is developing, giving the story more depth and subtlety.
"The Goa Gambit" is a novel about power, ambition, and survival in a world where nothing is as it seems—rather than just a story about gambling and casinos.
This book offers an incredibly engrossing reading experience that lingers with you long after you flip the last page because of its engaging characters, meticulously drawn location, and exciting plot.
Get The Goa Gambit by Anurag Tripathi if you're looking for a literary adventure that combines glitz, strategic intrigue, and profound psychological insights.

While the plot may occasionally feel a bit predictable, the author's ability to create tension and keep readers guessing ultimately outweighs any shortcomings. The novel's ending is satisfying and leaves the door open for a potential sequel.

TLDR: A page-turner with a lot of drama and a great plotline.
I will not be kidding if I say that I picked up this story because of Niyogi Books. I like the publication and it has published great stories in the past. However, I have heard a lot about the author Anurag Tripathi because of his book Dalal Street. But I chose this book because of Niyogi and partly because it has Goa in the title and talks about Casinos.
And I am glad that I picked it up.
Reasons why you should pick this up: 1. The storyline is intact and end to end. 2. The book is a page-turner. I completed it in a day and you can do it too—something to take you out of your reading slump. 3. Easily recognisable and imaginable characters.
Cover: I love the cover personally because it has a unique colour palette. With a background of green (the mat used on the poker table tops) and with symbols of all four suits in red and black. There are two dice on the cover (used in games at the casino) and a crown on the top showing the status of a czar (king) of the casino {spoiler alert: which is our protagonist.}.
It is a 325-page read with paperback binding, easy and comfortable text and good-quality paper.
Concept: The book runs at different places at different times. The first part has chapters to define all the characters (one character a chapter) with a small story about who/why/where they are. The second part shows the act and the third conclusion. Character definitions and boundaries are well-defined and one does not leave the trait that the character has. The motive for every action is clear and the readers will love to know. Also, the plotline is smooth. The whole book runs like a movie and I could imagine every part of this. You feel the tension with the characters.
Conclusion: Pick it up if you don't feel like watching a movie but want to watch a movie.
The Goa Gambit is gripping thriller set in the enthralling yet treacherous world of Casinos. With an engrossing plot and some fascinating characters, the book takes you on exploration of a world full of power, glamour and deceit.
The story set in Goa, where the protagonist Jayesh Shah, a self-made casino owner is thriving. But unknown to the public eye, he is just a front for a powerful politician. As he prepares for the opening of his new casino, Jayesh finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy. Will Jayesh survive this twisted web of vendetta and betrayals?
Set in Goa's thriving gambling industry, the book takes a look at behind the scenes working of the casinos dominated by a heady mix of money, power and politics. The Casino itself is akin to shark infested waters with conflicting interests and clashing egos, where only the strongest and most paranoid survive. Jayesh has to use all his wits to survive a game of betrayals and checks. The story is full of twists and turns till the end, keeping the readers hooked.
Apart from the intriguing plot, the book's biggest strength is the diverse cast of fascinating characters. From the resourceful Jayesh to the crafty Adhikari, to the scheming Anton, each character is fascinating, with his own motivations and hidden agendas. The backstories of the characters adds depth, making you connect with them.
The writing is excellent, not only capturing the inner workings of the casinos but capturing the cut-throat politics both inside and outside the casino. The incredibly layered characters add a new dimension to the story. Beyond the glitz and glamour, the story is dark and tense read about unbridled human ambition and quest for power.
Overall, 'The Goa Gambit' is a captivating read that keeps you hooked from the first page to the last. A great read for thriller fans.

It is centred on Jayesh Shah who, from being a small time gambler, has risen to become gambling king pin in the coastal state. His life is luxurious, and he rules the world; however, his life is full of deceitfulness, plotting, and gambling.
Tripathi knows the art of suspense very well as seen in his writing style. He beautifully manages to develop a complicated plot with a lot of plot twists and it does leave the readers intrigued from the start of the book to its last page. It is also benefited from the work’s character development which the author had endeavored to give each character his/her agenda and hidden-shift. Jayesh Shah is a very interesting character that narrates the events; he is a man with a uncontrolled past and an appetite that simply cannot be satisfied.
It is worth stressing that the author provides the reader with bright images of casinos, the fascination with gambling tables and the criminal side of the city. The novel also gives a view of the political systems of the state of Goa especially the politics of power and the corruptive systems involved.
What sets a book like “The Goa Gambit” apart is the fact it is as entertaining as it is loaded with philosophical undertones of the human existence. As many of you may know, greed is power in this world and Tripathi asks about the effects of power, the effects of greed, and whether there is a true success. It’s a book that you will continue to think of even after you have struck the last page of this book.
