Pine Lakes Lovers #1

The Best Friends' Playlist

Rate this book
I’m in love with my best friend. The problem? He doesn’t love me back.

Five years ago, on the night of our high school graduation, I handed Jordan my heart, and he handed me a country song's worth of heartbreak and rejection.

Now, after returning to my hometown for an internship, I find that despite my delusional fantasies, Jordan’s feelings remain the same. I’m still buddy-buddy Paige. The only thing that’s changed is that my friend-zone membershiphas been upgraded to platinum level.

But just as I’m making Adele’s “Someone Like You” my personal anthem, my life gets a miraculous facelift—I get a chance at my dream job and a potential new boyfriend all in one week. Sounds like the perfect way to get over Jordan, right?

Wrong.

Jordan’s starting to act… well, strange. I don’t know if I’m reading into things or if Jordan’s getting friendlier. Either way, he’s not just giving me butterflies these days—he’s constructing an entire exhibit with every longing look and lingering touch.

Unfortunately, that’s when I know I have to move on. Because if history taught me anything, it’s that when things heat up between us, I’m bound to get burned.

This is a friends-to-lovers romantic comedy filled with playful banter, endearing characters, and swoony moments that will make your heart squeal with happiness! It’s a closed-door romance book with all the chemistry and without any language or explicit scenes (kissing only).

4.5/5⭐️

This book was so good! It was sweet, fun, and hilarious... I laughed so much! One of my favorite things is jokes and witty banter… and the banter in this one is 10/10, Jessica nailed it.

I loved that this book was cute and lighthearted while also being descriptive, had emotional depth, and was well-balanced with down-to-earth, relatable characters and situations.

I loved Paige and Jordan as individual characters and together with their friendship, bond, and chemistry. The side characters and best friend group were awesome... the real MVP is Mrs. Miller! She had some of the best one-liners.

I also really enjoyed the song references and music games. I’ve had the playlist on repeat in my car, where I currently have I Ain’t Worried by OneRepublic stuck in my head.

It was so refreshing to read a clean and well-written book full of chemistry without worrying about any potential content popping up, including innuendos. If you are looking for a clean alternative to Emily Henry, this is it!

I loved Jessica’s writing and can’t believe this is her debut. I’m very excited and cannot wait for book 2!

I was sent an ARC of this book to review; all thoughts are 100% my own.

Content to consider: Kisses only, no language, cancer (no death), Parent illness, grief/guilt, second chances, miscommunication

I came very close to DNF this book multiple times but I pushed through. The beginning of the story seemed promising but then a love triangle thing started happening and it lost me. Then by time the FMC and MMC get together enters the 3rd act breakup 🤦🏽‍♀️ by the time I got the end of the story / epilogue I was annoyed. There were some cute quotable moments throughout the story but other than that I probably won't remember this story or the characters 🤷🏽‍♀️

3 stars. I’m conflicted on my feelings about this book. I think I’m gonna divide it into two parts. I liked it when I didn’t. I’m going to preface this by saying this is the first contemporary romance I have ever finished so I have no experience in this area.

Starting with what I liked, this book swept me in from the first page. The first few chapters were some of my favorites. It was the perfect way to set up. All of the characters. And throughout the whole reading experience I rarely ever wanted to put the book down. I loved the banter between the main characters! And the friendships with the flashbacks. There was such a strong friend group. Most of all I loved Jordan and Paige together. I could feel how much they cared about each other. I loved the game they played with trying to find the right song for occasions, even though I didn’t know any of the song references. The story explained how the song felt so that I could tell it was the right one for the moment. The romance was so sweet and I really appreciated that it was closed door. And I loved the ending!

But there were some things I didn’t like. The Miscommunication between the two main characters really got on my nerves. There was nothing romantic about it and because I cared so much about the characters, it put me in a bad mood. For about like 40% of the book, I wanted to scream at the main characters to just talk. I also don’t think I like third act break ups. I feel like there could’ve been more mature ways to handle the conflict that didn’t result in a break up, but still would’ve dealt with characters really strong internal conflict. I thought the general conflict was interesting. I just didn’t like how parts of it were executed. But the development of the internal conflict and the end resolution were really well done. the last thing I didn’t like like was entirely a personal problem, there were a few scenes between the Paige, Jordan, and their friends between them that reminded me of some difficult friendships experiences I’ve had that I haven’t completely healed from. That’s in no way the books fault I don’t think it would bother most people, but I ended up in a bad mood because of the memories that a few scenes in this book sparked.

Overall, the story and the characters are really well written, I was hooked, there were just a few things that bothered me.

I received a free e-book of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Best Friends’ Playlist by Jessica King Review

The Best Friends’ Playlist by Jessica King is a warm, clean friends‑to‑lovers romantic comedy that genuinely feels like a perfect summer soundtrack you can read. The story follows Paige and Jordan, best friends since high school whose bond has always been rich with quirky traditions, inside jokes, and one unforgettable song game where they assign the perfect tune to a moment in time. On the night of their high school graduation, Paige confesses her love to Jordan and is heartbreakingly turned away, leaving both of them to go separate ways for years. Now Paige is back in her hometown for an internship and her dream job opportunity, and Jordan’s unexpected changed behavior, lingering glances, and classic slow‑burn chemistry make her wonder if love might finally be ready to bloom between them after all. This is a cozy, closed‑door (kisses only) romance filled with humor, nostalgic flashbacks, and a memorable supporting cast, including the charming love‑and‑music‑obsessed friend group and Jordan’s delightfully blunt mom.

From the very first chapters, what drew me in was how deeply music threads through Paige and Jordan’s connection: their playful song game becomes a heartfelt emotional thread that mirrors their growing awareness of what’s always been there in their friendship. Their banter is witty and affectionate, and the dual points of view let me feel both Paige’s hope and Jordan’s hesitations with genuine clarity. The way the story builds from comfortable friendship into something tender and fully realized made me laugh, swoon, and occasionally cry because their emotional arc felt relatable and richly human.

The balance of light‑hearted moments (like goofy playlists, fire hydrants, and quirky grocery store scenes) with deeper introspection about past choices, fear of loss, and learning to trust again kept me grounded in both characters’ journeys. While the friends‑to‑lovers trope isn’t new, The Best Friends’ Playlist stands out with its unique and meaningful use of music as emotional language, a supportive ensemble of friends, and beautifully natural growth between leads who once loved, fled, and are now learning how to love again, this time without regret.

Rating: 4 out of 5
Because the authentic characters, slow‑burn connection, and music‑infused friendship‑to‑love journey made this an uplifting, joyfully memorable romance.

I had to purchase my KU subscription again, and I couldn’t find this book for some reason. I meant to finish this book in a few days, but things got hectic for me. Sooo, I’ll possibly return to this book and give a better review. Yet, from what I did read, this was a solid read! Especially with this being this author’s debut.

Jessica King knocked her debut out of the park! I couldn’t wait to read The Best Friends’ Playlist, and once I started reading, I absolutely devoured it! The impressive amount of music references aside, Paige and Jordan’s friends-to-lovers romance was funny, heartwarming, and absolutely entertaining.

Infused with laugh-out-loud humor and a refreshing amount of depth for a rom com, The Best Friends’ Playlist is on the short list of my very favorite books of 2024. I loved the flashback scenes – they allow the reader to experience the roots of Paige and Jordan’s relationship. And if there was ever a book couple to root for, Paige and Jordan are it! All the swoony tension with these two.

I also loved that King wrote the book with dual POV – my favorite. Getting insight into both main characters’ thoughts really gives the reader a fuller picture of the emotions at play for both Paige and Jordan and the depth of their feelings.

I can’t recommend this book enough, and I might just be stalking Jessica King’s social media for info on Book 2 for the foreseeable future!

We love a clean romance that really does FEEL like a romance!!!!! So many great scenes and flashbacks in this best friends to lovers story! I laughed many times. Paige was such an endearing character, and her dynamic with Jordan was so fun. I loved their games, her terrible improvising, and their friend group. And Jordan’s mom!!! Maybe my favorite character, actually.

Thank you so much Jessica King for the gifted copy of The Best Friend playlist, it was such an amazing read and I’m so in love with Paige and Jordan, they are so cute!

This is one of the few friends to lovers books I have read, and it did not disappoint! With hidden feelings, cute scenes and a third act break up, it has everything it needs to be the perfect comfort rom-com❤️

Firstly, Paige! She was a sensitive, quirky, determined lady who I absolutely loved! Her goals and ambitions were such an admirable part of her, but I also loved how she would drop everything just to be there for the people she loved🥰

Now Jordan was the most perfect man, with his kind, caring, loveable personality! He was so well written, and you can’t help but feel so much for him with all he’s dealt with and is dealing with🥹

Somthing else I love was Paige and Jordan’s song game! It was where they would look at a couple or person, and guess what song matched them in that moment! It was so adorable, and I loved how this element really pulled them together their whole relationship! Plus, the fact they had songs for each other😫💖

So if you’re looking for an easy to read, comfort rom com with a book couple you can obsess over, this is the book for you!

Oookay, this was just delightful 💖 I think what I loved most about this book was how ABSOLUTELY NORMAL Paige and Jordan’s story was — not that I don’t love a kooky, escapist plot line because I definitely do. But this book proves that you don’t need unbelievable ~drama~ (or unnecessary spice!) to create unbelievable ~tension~. Brava Jessica King!

ALSO… I now have an undeniable urge to sneakily soundtrack people in real life. And having spent high school in Colorado, the nostalgia factor hit just right 🫶

ARC review of The Best Friends’ Playlist by @authorjessicaking (4.25/5 ⭐️)
This book comes out on August 14th
I admit I ended up binge reading this book in basically one night 🌙 Jessica did a great job in inviting you into Paige and Jordan’s story. In the first chapter you get totally dropped in the middle of something and from that moment you’re sucked into their world. I loved all the music references and how they tie into the story! Also the side characters development is amazing. You will love them as much as the main characters. Jordan’s mom and her sass was definitely a highlight for me! Paige’s close friends are so relatable and I hope to hear more about them in future books from Jessica! You felt great closure at the end of the story and it was all over a sweet clean rom-com read! I would definitely recommend. There’s still some time left in the summer, this would make a great end of summer beach read! 🌊☀️

I received an ARC of this story in exchange for my review so here goes...

I loved Jordan and Paige from the get go. They were both just sweet people! It was obvious they cared so much for each other. Although this was only 350ish pages, it didn't feel rushed or sloppy. The author did a good job with pacing and bringing all the details together. I loved Jordan's relationship with his mom and the resolution that took place for them. Also, I appreciated this contained zero innuendo, language or anything more than kissing. I highly suggest this if you're looking for a sweet, clean love story. I'm eager to read Missy and Colton's story in the future!!

I LOVED this one! Jessica took us on a ride! The first chapter was one of my fave first chapters I’ve read. It hooked me in immediately and had me laughing so much. I was up and down with Jordan, one minute wanting to throw a book at his head, the next loving him so much. My emotions went on a rollercoaster and it was so great! I loved how human this story was though. The miscommunication, the lack of communication, the emotions, the highs, the lows, the mistakes. It was human and beautiful. I also loved Paige, she was such a sweetheart. I was totally in her corner the whole time! 🫶🏼 can’t wait to read Missy & Colton’s story next!

OVERALL STAR RATING: 6/5
CLEAN RATING: 5/5

I’m speechless! This is a debut novel, but Jessica writes like one of the most well-seasoned authors on the planet. I’ve never given a 6-star rating to a debut author before, but here we are! She KNOCKED this story out of the park. You’ll be laughing and crying the whole way through. Funny, but also raw and realistic characters grappling with things that will pull at your heartstrings. This story was a RIDE and I want to get back in line to ride it again.

Friends since high school – Paige and Jordan are just the cutest. At one time, life pulled them in different directions, but here they are together again in the same town. Now in their mid-20s, they’re both dealing with grown up career and life decisions - unsure of what to do with the deeper feelings they have for each other. Plus, Paige’s old flame walks into the picture, which complicates…well…A LOT.

Music has always been a huge part of my life. This novel very much focuses on music and specific songs being a soundtrack to Paige and Jordan’s friendship. I even pulled up a few of the songs mentioned as I was reading. Not because I didn’t know the song, but because I loved them and wanted to give them a listen to bring this whole story to life. UNIQUE – that’s what this beautiful book is. It screams originality and you can tell Jessica poured her heart into writing it.

This is a friends-to-lovers RomCom that I won’t soon forget, I can promise you that.

Please be advised that there is mention of cancer for those who may be sensitive to such a topic. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

4.5 stars rounded up!

"I stand in the circle of his arms, wishing I didn’t have to sleep, eat, work, or do anything that isn’t with him. Because when I’m with Jordan, I feel complete."

The Best Friends' Playlist by Jessica King

This was such a cute, well-written best friends-to-lovers debut romcom! I adored Jordan and Paige's story.

Jordan is wrestling with guilt and self-loathing involving something to do with his mom. I loved watching him grow throughout and realize that what had happened was not his fault. Jessica did a fantastic job at conveying the angsty emotions Jordan feels over what happened.
He is also such a loveable MMC with golden-retriever/cinnamon roll vibes. He and Paige have been best friends for seven years. He has a lot of worries regarding messing up their relationship if he confesses his feelings though.
He is loyal, thoughtful, and will do anything for his mom and Paige.

Paige works in advertising and has returned to Pine Lakes, CO for an internship, but fell in love with California when she attended college there. She longs to go back. When her friendship with Jordan picks back up, things are complicated and she doesn't understand what's holding him back.
She is full of life, colorful and cheerful, and passionate about her work.

Their journey is definitely worth the read if you enjoy best friends-to-more, sweet romcoms, and a cinnamon roll MMC who will melt your heart.
I do recommend The Best Friends' Playlist!

“We’re all figuring things out as we go. We’re bound to make mistakes, and we’re allowed to have regrets. The trick is to not let them stop us from moving forward. So don’t let them win.”

📚-Paige and Jordan have been friends since high school. After graduation, life took them both in different directions. 7 years later they are back within the same town and both of them are figuring out life and career decisions. Still unsure of deeper feelings for one another…

“Figure out what you want your life to look like, and don’t stop moving toward it.”

While this may be a debut novel, do not let that mere fact deter you from reading and thoroughly enjoying this awesome story by Jessica King! She has beautifully and precisely weaved a well-written, finely tuned story that evokes all the emotions, that has relatable and endearing characters. Music plays an incredible part in this story, which brings in such a unique and fresh perspective with specific songs as a “soundtrack” to Paige and Jordan’s friendship. The way this story is wording, is vivid and descriptive. There is delightful humor and witty banter within every page of this story. I loved that seeing how both Paige and Jordan were flawed characters, and that each had to work on their own struggles to grow and appreciate what was most important. I appreciated that, The Best Friend’s Playlist is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language! It’s definitely a story worth the read!💯

“From the moment we met, you changed my world. I will always love you.”

-friends to lovers
-more than one second chance
-slow burn romance
-high school flashbacks

First thought: Cute, sweet and full of wholesome yumminess you will just want to devour! It’s about two best friends and their second chance as adults to maybe make it out of the friend zone this time around. This book is full of music references, amazing friendships, teenage memories and lol moments. Absolutely loved this one, be ready to swoon.

Paige fell in love with her best friend in HS, then at their graduation party she put on a brave face and told him she loved him. But things did not go to plan.. he bolted and they went 4 years without talking. Now she’s back home after college for an internship to pad her resume for her dream job. They are rekindling their friendship but it’s also bringing back her feelings. Paige can’t go through that heartbreak again and the job of her dreams would mean moving to CA.

Jordan met Paige when he moved to Colorado his junior year of hs, they instantly hit it off. They were attached at the hip and had their futures planned after graduation. They were both headed to CA, but the night of their graduation party everything changed. Jordan was planning to tell Paige he wasn’t going to CA anymore as he just found out his mom had cancer. But before he could tell Paige she dropped the L word and he had a panic attack and fled.

Now four years later Paige is back in his life and his world is finally starting to rotate again. Jordan doesn’t want to make the same mistake again but his mom and her health weigh heavy on him. He can’t follow Paige to CA and he won’t hurt her again so that means things between them must remain friendly even if he wants more.

Literally Themes you’ll find:

* Best Friends to More
* Second Chance
* Tight Knit Friends Circle
* Flashbacks to High School
* Music References

Simply put... wow! What a debut this was! This story had me laughing, then crying, then laughing again. From the reader's initial introduction to Jordan and Paige's friendship to their original meeting back in high school, there was just something about these two characters that drew me in and kept me captivated. The side characters were just as wonderfully written--- I couldn't help but love Jordan's mom too! While the story is mostly told in the current time, there are flashes back to their high school days that really help to give us the full picture of their relationship. The author did such a wonderful job of giving us just enough to keep us reading on... we know that there is more to their story, but it's revealed slowly throughout the story... and I absolutely loved that. The chemistry between Jordan and Paige is absolutely fantastic--- a slow burn, for sure, but when they finally have that first kiss!? Absolutely worth the wait! Beyond that, there was such a tenderness to their relationship that I absolutely adored. There are reasons for their hesitations, and the more we see of that, the more you cannot help but root for them to get their happily ever after. While this definitely has its laugh out loud, swoony romantic comedy moments, it was also a very emotional story too. If you love friends to love, you absolutely won't want to miss this one! I cannot wait to see what Jessica King does next!

The Best Friend's Playlist is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language. It is important to note that a side character's past cancer diagnosis plays a big part in their story, so keep that in mind if that is an issue.

I cannot express how much I loved Paige and Jordan!!! They were both so cute and funny by themselves, that together they were even better!

Jordan is a swoon worthy, perfect, but maybe a little overprotective, confident, compassionate book boyfriend. He cares for his sick mom, but he is flawed by his overprotectiveness letting it get in the way of him developing own life. But he is perfectly balanced with the sweet, bubbly, cries-whether-happy-or-sad girl Paige. She has such big dreams that I am so happy to watch her peruse and make a life for herself.

I kept thinking to myself that Jordan needs to go to therapy, then it made me chuckle that his mom told him he should at the end hehe. Speaking of his mom, she was perhaps my favorite character. She was witty and blunt, just how I like my characters. The rest of their tight-knit friend group made me laugh and love them just the same as our two heroes. I sense a potential second book with my girl Missy and Colton (??? Maybe????).

Together they have this really cute game of finding the perfect song for different moments. I felt like I was in those scenes giggling with the two, but also envy they can pick a perfect song so quick.

Overall, I loved seeing the journey of unrequited love for a best friend turn into a lot of growth for both parties. Growing into amazing individuals by themselves, but also finally ready to be a “we.”

P.S. Loved the taking care of her while she is sick scene. 10/10 always.

*Thank you to the author for sending me an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own :)*

Paige and Jordan are childhood best friends who, after a disastrous one way love confession, have a four year fall out. A chance event brings the two back together and with those feelings still lingering, the two begin to navigate the rocky waters of friendship and falling for the one person they can’t afford to lose.

What an adorable book!
So first of all, I want to say that the writing style in this book was so good. It absolutely hooked me and I felt all the emotions, which tends to be rare in romcoms (at least for me lol). The writing had such a depth to it!
As a debut novel, it was so impressive!
Plus, the dual POV added so much to the storyline. Really enjoyed that!

I loved the childhood best friends to lovers trope. It was executed well!!
I also really loved the side characters. I’m rooting for a Missy and Colton book next 🤭 Also, Jordan’s mom cracked me up. She was so funny, and wasn’t even trying to be lol. Like the whole “I raised an idiot” scene? Hilarious.
Paige was really well written and had a lot of depth. Jordan did too, and he was really multi-faceted. He took me on quite the emotional rollercoaster lol!

I loved the chemistry between Paige and Jordan, and their interactions were always so fun. Their banter was great. Like the opening scene?! I loved it!
I also loved the epilogue. It was PERFECT!

Overall I really loved this book! It was cute, sweet, and wholesome. It had emotional depth and really took me on a journey with the characters.
I definitely recommend this book!

Can’t wait to read more books by Jessica!

I am struggling with the rating on this book, so I'm going to say a 3.5.

This book is genuinely cute and fun and funny (I laughed out loud at one point, and squee'ed at other times), but the whole storyline was predictable , and it got tiresome after a bit to listen to Jordan and Paige lament about how the other doesn't share their feelings when they CLEARLY DO.

The characters as a whole were enjoyable, I liked that there wasn't any spice because sometimes that is the whole point of the book when I just want to see the relationships grow, and, as I mentioned above, the book did make me squee.

So, a 3.5 it is! If you can overlook what I mentioned above, you'll love this book.

First, I want to thank the author for providing me with a an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

3.5-4 stars, marking for spoilers just in case!

“The Best Friend’s Playlist” is exactly what it says it’s going to be — a sweet romantic comedy. It’s a delightful little story about two best friends individually struggling with their feelings for one another, while keeping their friendship as strong as they can after some pretty significant friendship setbacks.

So many times throughout this story, I found myself wanting to shake Paige and Jordan by the shoulders and yell JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER YOU DINGUSES, but it was also exciting watching their story play out. While sometimes the drama and setbacks felt a bit manufactured to move the plot along, it didn’t detract from the story, it just made the ending feel that much more satisfying.

The characters and world were all genuine and interesting, which did a good job of drawing me into the story. Also, Jordan’s mom is one of my favorite “book moms.” And Missy and Colton’s story next? Yes, please!

While “The Best Friend’s Playlist” was a lot more saccharine and less tense than my usual reads, I did still find myself enjoying it! I’d say this one should probably be on the TBR of any romance reader. :)

(I received this book as part of the ARC team. I agreed to leave my honest review after reading.)

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I didn't care for Jordan in the beginning. He seemed like a huge jerk who was stringing Paige along (and only interested in her after there was competition) but, about halfway into the book I started to see him in a new light. He certainly could've handled their relationship better but, he has his reasons. Once it began to unfold I really enjoyed Paige and Jordan's love story. I particularly enjoyed how music was so much a part of their relationship.

(I was rooting for Ian for a minute there... But that's probably because I'm married to an Ian myself so I'm partial! lol)

I am always searching for closed-door romance and this one didn't disappoint. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and seeing more from the other characters.
